"America's DNA: 'The Federalist Papers' "- Cal Thomas | Jul 03, 2014; http://townhall.com/columnists/calthomas/2014/07/03/americas-dna-the-federalist-papers-n1858315/page/full [AS I SEE IT: Impeach the President? Many have been talking about it for awhile and now event he mainstream press is forced to pay attention to the conversation. (The subject was covered as a major story in one of last night's NETWORK evening news reports.) The following article explains why many believe there is a basis for such action. Then again, the excerpt from the article noted afterwards (below) points out why it probably won't and shouldn't happen - at least not before the Nov. election. - Stan]

There are many ways to lose freedom -- conquering armies, surrendering without a fight. Unfortunately, we are currently surrendering our freedom, not to a foreign power, but to our own government. The growth, reach, and cost of big government is happening before our eyes and eroding our liberty, largely because too many Americans are not familiar with the brilliant system of government our Founders established. Progressives prefer a "living Constitution," which is constantly changing to conform to their ideology. What it is not is the Constitution established by the Founders.

In a comprehensive publication, "The Roots of Liberty: Unlocking the Federalist Papers," edited by Scott D. Cosenza and Claire M. Griffin, it attempts to remind us of the Founders' intent and why their vision, if not renewed by each generation, will quickly fade, America along with it.Tim Donner, president of "One Generation Away," which, according to its website, is "committed to restoring, strengthening and preserving the vision of a free America by applying our founding principles to the issues of today," (and on whose board I serve as an unpaid member), published the book through its Cornerstone Project, says "Roots" has "so far been welcomed by public and private schools in six states."

For those of a certain age, "The Roots of Liberty" will remind us of our high school civics classes, but as government continues to expand and President Obama increasingly ignores the boundaries placed on the Executive Branch, it will serve as a needed reminder of what makes America unique in the world and how it can be quickly destroyed if sufficient attention is not paid to our founding principles.

What should attract young people to "The Roots of Liberty" is that the editors have updated the 18th-century language, using instead paraphrases and modern words that will resonate in contemporary ears, without harming its original meaning. Here's one example: "(James) Madison supported dividing the national government in a way such that each branch in and of itself would be a type of safeguard against tyranny. Because each branch of government was simultaneously separate and interdependent, it had to work together with the other branches in order to achieve the goals of the national government." And Madison's words: "To what expedient then shall we finally resort for maintaining in practice the necessary partition of power among the several departments, as laid down in the constitution? The only answer that can be given is, that as all these exterior provisions are found to be inadequate, the defect must be supplied, by so contriving the interior structure of the government, as that its several constituent parts may, by their mutual relations, be the means of keeping each other in their proper places." The book then succinctly lists the powers each branch of government is given in order that each branch might be a check on the other. The Founders understood that human nature had to be controlled, lest the temptations of power destroy both leader and country.

Ruling by fiat, as President Obama seems to be doing, like vowing to accomplish immigration reform on his own, even in the face of multiple setbacks by the "checking" Supreme Court, is in violation of the Constitution, as one can read in this analysis of "The Federalist Papers," the philosophical foundation of our constitutional government. Call it America's DNA.

In the chapter "The Powers Delegated to the Federal Government Are Few and Defined," discussing "the doctrine of enumerated powers," the writers say: "By virtue of the doctrine, the Constitution of the United States establishes a government of delegated, enumerated and thus limited powers."

Does this resemble our present government?

In the foreword, the authors write: "The ultimate goal of our project is to strengthen America's civil society by helping our future leaders understand that the principles embedded in the U.S. Constitution are as relevant today as they were when the Constitution was ratified in 1789." "The Roots of Liberty" will remind Americans of where our country came from and where it is headed if we don't embrace the brilliance of those who bequeathed it to us.

Why blow a likely good hand for a very uncertain one? Polls show the public has no appetite for impeachment—and that the GOP is inching closer to getting the six seats it needs to win control of the Senate. As House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday, “We have no plans to impeach the president. We have no future plans. Listen, it’s all a scam started by Democrats at the White House.” I don’t think there is any doubt Obama has ignored the restraints put on the executive office by the Constitution. He’s unilaterally made changes to Obamacare without congressional approval, made recess appointments when the Senate was not in recess, and refused to enforce our immigration and drug laws, and on it goes. But whether Obama’s tendency to “go it alone” when he can’t get what he wants via Congress rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors is questionable, certainly in the eyes of the American public. The most effective way to rein in Obama’s imperial presidency isn’t impeachment hearings. It is for voters to have their say on November 4. [bold and italics emphasis mine]

"Cease the Cease-Fires" - Thomas Sowell | Jul 29, 2014; http://townhall.com/columnists/thomassowell/2014/07/29/cease-the-ceasefires-n1870999/page/full

Many years ago, on my first trip around the world, I was struck by how the children in the Middle East -- Arab and Israeli alike -- were among the nicest looking little children I had seen anywhere. It was painful to think that they were going to grow up killing each other. But that is exactly what happened.

It is understandable that today many people in many lands just want the fighting between the Israelis and the Palestinians to stop. Calls for a cease-fire are ringing out from the United Nations and from Washington, as well as from ordinary people in many places around the world. According to the New York Times, Secretary of State John Kerry is hoping for a cease-fire to "open the door to Israeli and Palestinian negotiations for a long-term solution." President Obama has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to have an "immediate, unconditional humanitarian cease-fire" -- again, with the idea of pursuing some long-lasting agreement.

If this was the first outbreak of violence between the Palestinians and the Israelis, such hopes might make sense. But where have the U.N., Kerry and Obama been during all these decades of endlessly repeated Middle East carnage?

The Middle East must lead the world in cease-fires. If cease-fires were the road to peace, the Middle East would easily be the most peaceful place on the planet. "Cease-fire" and "negotiations" are magic words to "the international community." But just what do cease-fires actually accomplish? In the short run, they save some lives. But in the long run they cost far more lives, by lowering the cost of aggression.

At one time, launching a military attack on another nation risked not only retaliation but annihilation. When Carthage attacked Rome, that was the end of Carthage. But when Hamas or some other terrorist group launches an attack on Israel, they know in advance that whatever Israel does in response will be limited by calls for a cease-fire, backed by political and economic pressures from the United States.

It is not at all clear what Israel's critics can rationally expect the Israelis to do when they are attacked. Suffer in silence? Surrender? Flee the Middle East? Or -- most unrealistic of al -- fight a "nice" war, with no civilian casualties? General William T. Sherman said it all, 150 years ago: "War is hell."

If you want to minimize civilian casualties, then minimize the dangers of war, by no longer coming to the rescue of those who start wars.

Israel was attacked, not only by vast numbers of rockets but was also invaded -- underground -- by mazes of tunnels. There is something grotesque about people living thousands of miles away, in safety and comfort, loftily second-guessing and trying to micro-manage what the Israelis are doing in a matter of life and death. Such self-indulgences are a danger, not simply to Israel, but to the whole Western world, for it betrays a lack of realism that shows in everything from the current disastrous consequences of our policies in Egypt, Libya and Iraq to future catastrophes from a nuclear-armed Iran.

Those who say that we can contain a nuclear Iran, as we contained a nuclear Soviet Union, are acting as if they are discussing abstract people in an abstract world. Whatever the Soviets were, they were not suicidal fanatics, ready to see their own cities destroyed in order to destroy ours.

As for the ever-elusive "solution" to the Arab-Israeli conflicts in the Middle East, there is nothing faintly resembling a solution anywhere on the horizon. Nor is it hard to see why. Even if the Israelis were all saints -- and sainthood is not common in any branch of the human race -- the cold fact is that they are far more advanced than their neighbors, and groups that cannot tolerate even subordinate Christian minorities can hardly be expected to tolerate an independent, and more advanced, Jewish state that is a daily rebuke to their egos.

"The Obama Administration Holds Israel to Stricter Standards than It Holds the U.S." - By David French, Jul. 23, 2014;
http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/383490/obama-administration-holds-israel-stricter-standards-it-holds-us-david-french
President Barak Obama
Let’s juxtapose two stories. First, after declaring that Israel’s attacks in Gaza were a “hell of a pinpoint operation,” Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in the Middle East to press for an immediate cease-fire, a cease-fire that would leave much of Hamas’s military infrastructure intact and hand Hamas a victory after the FAA and others shut down flights to Tel Aviv. Second, on Saturday — the day before Kerry attacked Israel’s military tactics — a U.S. drone strike claimed eleven lives in Pakistan. This strike followed a Wednesday attack that claimed 15 lives.

I have a few questions: Were any phone calls made or text messages sent to warn civilians before we struck the Taliban compounds in Pakistan? Did we even drop leaflets? Were those Taliban engaged in direct and immediate hostilities against U.S. forces? Did the Taliban possess any weapons that were capable of directly and immediately harming Americans on American soil? Is the United States of the mindset that an immediate ceasefire against al Qaeda is in our national interest so long as it retains the capacity and intent to strike the U.S.?

The answer to each of those questions is almost certainly no. Even more, American drone operators have a reputation (I don’t know if it’s deserved) for so-called “double-tap” strikes that can also kill Taliban fighters who rush to render aid to casualties from the initial strike.

Moving beyond our drone strikes, our own urban combat operations have exacted a far higher toll in lives and property. Not only were cities devastated, but the casualty toll in Fallujah, for example, was far higher than the Israelis have inflicted. Peruse the archives of left-wing blogs, and you’ll find image after image of urban devastation from our fights in Fallujah and elsewhere. The picture below is typical.

Let me be crystal clear: I agree with our tactics in Fallujah and elsewhere, I support our drone campaign against al-Qaeda and its allies (including even the alleged “double taps”), and I think that our rules of engagement in general should be less restrictive — enabling even greater use of American firepower. During my own time in Iraq, our troopers once engaged in a 36-hour firefight in a village that left much of a local town devastated and culminated in an Abrams tank driving over buildings to literally crush the terrorist occupants inside. These things happen in war, and unless you want to empower the terrorist enemy by refusing to attack him while he attacks you, these things must happen.

So why is the Obama administration holding the Israel to a higher standard than it holds American forces? Why does it continue to do so in the face of continued, direct attacks on Israeli soil? By doing so, it does nothing but empower Hamas and weaken Israel. Europe’s long history of vicious anti-Semitism (combined with and compounded by its growing anti-Semitic Muslim population) is a motivating factor for Europe’s constant and reprehensible attacks on Israel and support for its terrorist enemies. What is the Obama administration’s motivation for its own indefensible double standards? Appeasement? Something worse?

Not only does Israel have a right of self-defense (which the Obama administration does at least acknowledge), it has a right of self-defense that is co-equal to America’s, with a freedom of action that is co-equal to America’s. Anything less is asking for a terrorist victory.

"Obama’s LGBT Executive Order Undermines Pluralism and Religious Liberty"Ryan T. Anderson/ July 21, 2014 / http://dailysignal.com/2014/07/21/obamas-lgbt-executive-order-undermines-pluralism-religious-liberty/

Today [7/21] President Barack Obama issued an executive order barring federal contractors from what it describes as “discrimination” on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Employers should respect the intrinsic dignity of all of their employees, but today’s executive order undermines our nation’s commitment to pluralism and religious liberty.

Today’s executive order does not contain any religious liberty protections—though it does retain an older federal regulation that permits religious organizations that favor employment of co-religionists to continue such practices. But there is no protection for organizations that hire based on mission—not on affiliation—to continue to do so. This in effect excludes taxpayers who hold conscientious beliefs about sexuality that run counter to Obama’s from being eligible for federal contracts funded with their own tax dollars. Today’s order disregards the consciences and liberties of people of goodwill who happen not to share the government’s opinions about issues of sexuality. All Americans should be free to contract with the government without penalty because of their reasonable beliefs about morally contentious issues.

Federal policy on government contracts should not seek to enforce monolithic liberal secularism. Today’s order undermines our nation’s commitment to reasonable pluralism and reasonable diversity. All citizens and the groups they form should be free to exist and participate in relevant government programs according to their reasonable beliefs. The federal government should not use the tax-code and government contracting to reshape civil society on controversial moral issues that have nothing to do with the federal contract at stake. All educational institutes, for example, that meet bona fide requirements about education (not sexuality) should be eligible for federal contracts if they fulfill the federal purpose of the program—education.

Previous guidelines for federal contractors prohibited discrimination on race, color, national origin, sex, and religious affiliation. These protections make sense, because race, color, national origin and sex are rarely—if ever—relevant to job performance, while religious affiliation is relevant for some religious organizations (and, as noted above, there were religious hiring exemptions). But sexual orientation and gender identity are not like race.

Indeed, sexual orientation and gender identity are unclear, ambiguous terms. They can refer to voluntary behaviors as well as thoughts and inclinations, and it is reasonable for employers to make distinctions based on actions. By contrast, “race” and “sex” clearly refer to traits, and in the overwhelming majority of cases, these traits (unlike voluntary behaviors) do not affect fitness for any job.

Today’s executive order bans decisions based on moral views common to the Abrahamic faith traditions and to great thinkers from Plato to Kant as unjust discrimination. Whether by religion, reason, or experience, many people of goodwill believe that our bodies are an essential part of who we are. On this view, maleness and femaleness are not arbitrary constructs but objective ways of being human to be valued and affirmed, not rejected or altered. Thus, our sexual embodiment as male and female goes to the heart of what marriage is: a union of sexually complementary spouses. Today’s order deems such judgments irrational and unlawful.

Today’s executive order also does not contain a Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ) exemption. BFOQs, which other employment laws contain, allow employers to make employment decisions so long as those decisions are honestly related to job qualifications. For example, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act contains a BFOQ that allows employers to take sex into account: hiring a female camp counselor at an all-girls sleep-away summer camp, for example, which might otherwise seem to be “sex discrimination.” Today’s executive order has no provision that protects organizations with jobs where one’s sexual orientation or gender identity is a bona fide occupational qualification that is reasonably connected to the mission of the organization and the responsibilities of the job.

Worst of all, today’s executive order is unnecessary. Voluntary market forces are already eliminating true discrimination, as making employment decisions based on non-relevant factors hurts one’s ability to compete. Indeed, the liberal Williams Institute at UCLA, which conducts research on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy, reports that most federal contractors do not consider sexuality:

• As of May 2014, 86 percent of the top 50 federal contractors prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation, and 61 percent prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.

• All but two (96 percent) of the top 50 Fortune 500 companies prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation as of May 2014, and 70 percent prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.

But the federal government should not penalize those contractors that do conscientiously judge sexual orientation or gender identity to be relevant to their mission and purpose.

In response to this executive order, Congress has an opportunity to protect religious liberty and the rights of conscience. Policy should prohibit the government from discriminating against any individual or group, whether nonprofit or for-profit, based on their beliefs that marriage is the union of a man and woman or that sexual relations are reserved for marriage. The government should be prohibited from discriminating against such groups or individuals in tax policy, employment, licensing, accreditation, or contracting.

The Marriage and Religious Freedom Act—sponsored by Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, in the House (H.R. 3133) with more than 100 co-sponsors of both parties and sponsored by Sen. Mike Lee, R – Utah, in the Senate (S. 1808) with 17 co-sponsors—would prevent the federal government from taking such adverse actions. Protecting religious liberty and the rights of conscience fosters a more diverse civil sphere. Indeed, tolerance is essential to promoting peaceful coexistence even amid disagreement.[AS I See IT: Let's pray that this Marriage and Religious Freedom Act would finally pass Congress and yes, be signed by THIS President. It is sad that such is necessary when this recent actions of this President was not necessary. - Stan]

"Where's the Outrage, Righteous Indignation?" -  http://blogs.cbn.com/beltwaybuzz/archive/2014/07/24/wheres-the-outrage-righteous-indignation.aspx [AS I SEE IT: It's one thing for our government to be near absent in the release of the wife of an American Christian (see item below), but I find it disheartening and inexplicable why I have not heard prayers lifted for our persecuted brothers and sisters worldwide from our pulpits. Why do we not engage the Enemy in the most effective way we can as the Body of Christ - with our intercession before our Heavenly Father? Is Heaven not asking, "Where is My Church?" P.S. - To encourage you that in the midst of difficult times for so many Christians, be sure to check out tomrrow's post (#750) about revival in Iran (Yes, Iran!)- Stan]

It's a headline that broke the collective heart of our newsroom: "Ancient Christian Community in Iraq Is No More"

For about 2,000 years, Iraqi Christians - a small but significant minority - have called Iraq home. Today, that group is being systematically targeted for annihilation. The majority of Iraq's once-thriving Christian community in Mosul have abandoned their homes and belongings in a desperate attempt to save their lives after extremists with [the] Islamic State gave them only three options: convert to Islam, pay a religious tax, or face execution. The few who stayed behind likely will become martyrs.

One expert told CBN News some even had their fingers chopped off so insurgents could steal their wedding bands. Their crime? While in some cultures the system of justice demands and eye for and eye or the loss of limb for theft, no such crime was committed here. They're simply guilty of professing a faith in Jesus Christ. And in some majority Muslim countries that can result in charges of apostasy or blasphemy.

For Christians in Iraq, who trace their biblical heritage to the Old Testament times of Abraham, the notion of apostasy is as absurd and as far-fetched as a desert without sand. Thriving as one of the world's oldest, continuously existing Christian communities, they were never Muslim adherents. So accusing them of renouncing Islam is a trumped-up charge. Furthermore, it's unlikely any Arab Christian in his or her right mind would disparage Islam or the prophet Muhammad given the close connection between culture, religion, and politics.

Christians in the West need to stand up for our persecuted brothers and sisters. We also need to acknowledge whatever forms of "persecution" or "injustice" we think we suffer grossly pales in comparison to what's happening in other countries like North Korea, Pakistan, Syria, and Sudan, where a young Christian mother had been imprisoned and sentenced to die for converting to Christianity. Fortunately, Meriam Irbrahim, along with her two young children, finally found freedom today. But there are many more, including Pastor Saeed Abedini imprisoned in Iran, who remain shackled and silenced for their faith.

What's happening in Iran, Sudan, and other places hostile to religious freedom should serve as a wake up call for the church and Christians worldwide. Where is the outrage? Where are the rallies and demonstrations? Where are the 24-hour prayer vigils? Are we doing enoughWhatever the answer, we can always do more. We need to channel the anger from the pain and suffering of fellow believers and turn it into action.

First and foremost, we should always adopt a posture of prayer. Secondly, we should employ wisdom and join our voices in unison to encourage our leaders, both in the church and the political arena, to use their influence to shape attitudes and change policy.

It should not be overlooked that Meriam Ibrahim's release and consequent freedom came just one day after a congressional hearing specifically on her case.

As the apostle Paul exhorted Timothy, it's time pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, and love -- and fight the good fight of faith. It's the cause for which our Savior died, and our persecuted brothers and sisters deserve no less.

"US Mostly Absent in Meriam Ibrahim Release" - By Caitlin Burke, July 26, 2014; http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2014/July/Critics-US-Conspicuously-Absent-in-Ibrahim-Release/ "Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese mom who refused to recant her Christian faith even in the face of death, will soon head to the United States. The news comes one day after she and her family were allowed to leave the U.S. Embassy in Sudan, where they took refuge after her release from prison.Meanwhile, critics note that although Ibrahim's husband and children are American citizens, it was the Italian government and the Vatican that negotiated her release, not the United States. Tina Ramirez, founder of the religious freedom organization Hardwired, said that's unacceptable."It is a matter of U.S. foreign policy under the International Freedom Act of 1998 that we do care about religious freedom whether it's an American citizen or not an American citizen," Ramirez told CBN News. "But the fact that her husband is an American citizen makes this case more unfortunate that the U.S. didn't get involved from the beginning," she said.
