#435 (2/7) "Dispelling a Common Gun-Control Myth"

URGENT CALL FOR CONTINUED PRAYER  (from the American Center for Law and Justice, - 2/6 ; "American Pastor Saeed (who just started an 8 year sentence for helping the underground churches in Iran) continues to undergo mental torment – fed lies by Iranian prison guards. He's been cut off from speaking to his wife and children, and when his Iranian family visited him, he questioned if anyone was still working for his freedom.  His wife, Naghmeh, shared, "When I heard this from my husband, I cried. It broke my heart. Behind those walls he feels helpless and relies on us to be his voice. . . . Please help me make sure he is never forgotten." Please CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR PASTOR SAEED. Also, if you have not already, please join over 130,000 who have signed the latest petitioin for Pastor Saeed's release at http://aclj.org/iran/save-american-pastor-from-iranian-prison-sentence

Boy Scouts Will Postpone a Decision on Admitting Gays ; February 06, 2013 http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/Prayerwatch?pw=1131
"The Boy Scouts of America, which reconfirmed last summer its policy banning openly gay people from participation, then said last week it was reconsidering the ban, said on Wednesday that it would postpone a decision once more, until May, as talk of gays in the ranks has roiled a storied organization that carries deep emotional connection and nostalgia for millions of Americans.
An end to the national ban on gays, which the United States Supreme Court said in 2000 was legal free speech by a private organization, would create a huge new moment of risk, experimentation and change people on both sides of the issue. The proposal floated last week would allow local scouting units to decide membership rules for themselves..." (Sources: New York Times, Reuters)

As the Lord leads, please pray:

  • For the officials charged with making decisions for the Boy Scouts of America.
  • About the thousands of scouts, their parents, and scout leaders who are being assailed by the debating groups.
  • For wisdom for the many churches and religious groups who sponsor scouting.

PLEASE CONSIDER:  I am participating in the annual fundraiser Walk for Life on Feb. 9 for a local pregnancy resource center that ministers to girls and women who might otherwise abort their baby. My goal is $213 and I'm about halfway there. If you can make a pledge of $10 or more, please go to http://www.razoo.com/story/Stan-M-YonashiroTHANK YOU for whatever you can pledge. (I'd especially appreciate your prayers that I (and all the walkers) will meet my goal.)

"Dispelling a Common Gun-Control Myth;'' February 1, 2013 http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=22803&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=DPD

Gun-control advocates in the wake of the Sandyhook school shooting have used a particular statistic over and over again: "As many as 40 percent of guns are purchased without a background check." While President Obama, Vice President Biden, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and many others have used the "fact" repeatedly, it is false, says economist John Lott in the National Review.
  • The Brady Act requires background checks to prevent someone from buying a gun from a federally licensed dealer if he or she has a felony, some misdemeanor convictions or has been involuntarily committed for mental illness. Before the Brady Act, simply a waiver needed to be signed.
  • The "40 percent" claim misrepresents the actual number that was reported -- 36 percent -- which is still almost 25 percent above the accurate number, says Lott.
  • The number 36 percent actually comes from a Clinton-era survey of 251 gun sales that occurred before the Brady Act required mandatory background checks. The survey asked buyers if they thought they were buying from a licensed dealer; many buyers who did not believe the seller was licensed actually bought from small dealers and did not know they were licensed.
Access to guns is also much more limited since many small dealers have been forced out of business. After accounting for guns that were bought, traded, rented, issued for a job or won through raffles, 85 percent went through federally licensed firearms dealers, meaning just 15 percent of the 251 gun sales were transferred without a background check. Lott says that if the same survey were performed today the numbers would likely be in the single digits.
  • President Obama claimed that background checks have kept 1.5 million people from purchasing a weapon in the last 14 years but failed to explain that number reflected only initial denials.
  • According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, 94 percent of those initial denials were dropped after preliminary reviews, almost all of the rest were dropped after extended reviews and only 62 people, or just 0.1 percent, were prosecuted for attempting to purchase a weapon.
Lott says that increasing background checks will constitute nothing more than an inconvenience for most gun purchasers and the delays may even trigger slight rises in violent crime.

As we honor the leadership and vision of President Reagan on his birthday on February 6, it is essential to recognize his unshakeable commitment to strengthening the military power of the United States. He saw this strength as necessary to preserving security, stability, and ultimately peace in the world, and it was undergirded by his confidence in the goodness of the American people and the American nation.

Prior to Vietnam, American foreign policy was divided between realists and idealists. Realists believed that the U.S. needed to exercise restraint in furthering its fundamental principles of liberty and democracy in the conduct of its foreign policy—most particularly when it involved the application of military force. They saw unbridled engagement leading to the U.S. undermining its moral standing by lowering itself to the power politics practiced by the nations of Europe in particular. The idealists, on the other hand, believed in an energetic foreign policy that accepted the expenditure of considerable blood and treasure, not to mention political capital, to further American principles abroad. They saw robust international engagement as an affirmation of American ideals and leading the rest of the world in the direction of raising its standards to the level of the United States.

These contending ideologies over foreign policy, however, shared an essential belief: a moral confidence in the U.S. as a nation founded on an idea, which made it an exceptional nation on the world stage. The Vietnam War shattered this fundamental consensus and led to a new dividing line: between those with a sense of moral confidence in the U.S. and its exceptional status and those who were skeptical about the moral standing of the U.S. relative to other nations. The forces of moral self-confidence naturally saw robust military capabilities and the willingness to use them as a force for security, stability, and peace. The forces of moral self-doubt thought that those same capabilities could or would be used for questionable purposes and lead to less security, instability, and perpetual war.

President Reagan was unquestionably one of the foremost leaders of the forces of moral self-confidence. When he assumed the presidency in 1981, he set about fulfilling his commitment to strengthen the military forces of the U.S. His critics argued against the increased funding for the military and the arming of freedom fighters in places such as Nicaragua in favor of a nuclear freeze with the Soviet Union.
Fast forward to today, and one sees that the same dividing line in the debates over foreign and military policy that emerged following Vietnam endures. In this case, however, the presidency is in the hands of one of the foremost leaders of the forces of moral self-doubt. President Obama first ran for President in 2008 by appealing to constituencies that labeled President George W. Bush a war criminal, asserted that the U.S. undertook Operation Iraqi Freedom in order to confiscate Iraqi oil, and derided the policy for constructing a defense of the U.S. against missile attack.

Following the 2008 election, President Obama undertook an apology tour. Now, with his re-election campaign behind him, President Obama is setting about the task of shrinking and weakening the military. President Reagan, if he were here today, would recognize both how wrong-headed President Obama’s foreign and defense policies are and what drives these policies. He would fight them tooth and nail. As he did in the late 1970s and 1980s, he would argue that the U.S. is a force for good in the world and that a robust military force would lead to security, stability, and peace.

As usual, President Reagan’s vision gives hope and confidence to the American people, just as the American people can give hope and confidence to the world at large. However, there is precious little hope or confidence either at home or abroad today.

"Disabilities Treaty Just Another U.N. Power Grab"- by Amy Payne, November 28, 2012

[NOTE: Even though this item came up in the news several months ago, I never had a chance to post it and wanted to be sure you saw it to remind you to be wary of proposals coming out of the U.N. that this administration esp. tends to champion. So much of what international bodies would  have the U.S. sign on to are atttempts to chip away at our national sovereignty and replace it with what other nations often not friendly to the U.S. want that is not what is in the best interests of America. - Stan]

International treaties sound like a good idea, especially when they claim to protect vulnerable people. The problem is, America already does more than any other country to ensure equal rights for its people—and the United Nations just wants the power to interfere in American law.

The Senate is now considering the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). President Obama signed this treaty in 2009, but the Senate has yet to agree to it. It needs a two-thirds majority of Senators to ratify it. In September, 36 Republican Senators signed a letter [1] stating that they would oppose any treaties that came up for a vote during the lame-duck session of Congress. We will see now whether that promise holds. [This bill WAS defeated by the Senate. - Stan]

Steven Groves, Heritage’s Bernard and Barbara Lomas Senior Research Fellow, has explained that despite its name, the treaty will not help Americans with disabilities [3]:
"The rights of Americans with disabilities are well protected under existing law and are enforced by a wide range of state and federal agencies. Joining CRPD merely opens the door for foreign “experts” to interfere in U.S. policymaking in violation of the principles of American sovereignty [4]."
For starters, the treaty doesn’t even define disabilities, but says that “disability is an evolving concept [5].” This is consistent with the nature of U.N. treaties, which often extend the organization’s reach beyond the original treaty concept. Groves writes [3]:
"Human rights treaty committees have been known to make demands that fall well outside the scope of the subject matter of the treaty and conflict with the legal, social, economic, and cultural traditions and norms of states. This has especially been the case with the U.S."
For example, the U.N. committee that is supposed to make recommendations on racial discrimination tried to dictate to the United States how it should handle enemy combatants held at Guantanamo Bay and said the U.S. should end the death penalty. And the committee that oversees the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women regularly advocates that the U.S. decriminalize prostitution.

The disabilities treaty could open the door for abortion advocates [6] “to pressure the U.S. to liberalize its domestic abortion laws or policies governing foreign aid for family planning,” says Heritage’s Grace Melton. U.N. officials have already pointed to language in the treaty as helpful in expanding abortion.
As if all of this weren’t enough, U.N. treaties are always aimed directly at Americans’ wallets. This one is no different. The cost of enforcing it is unknown. Not only does the treaty fail to define who would be considered disabled, but it also adds entitlements to whoever that may be. In addition to covering traditional civil rights, the treaty attempts to guarantee [5]:
"...certain economic, social, and cultural “positive rights,” such as the right to education, health, and “an adequate standard of living for [persons with disabilities] and their families, including adequate food, clothing and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions.”
As is usually the case, the United States is already an example to the rest of the world in this area. This country has multiple major federal laws that protect Americans with disabilities, ensuring their access to services and their rights—in addition to the rights all Americans enjoy because of the Bill of Rights. No other country can begin to compete with the safeguards America has in place.

Inviting the United Nations and other international groups to come in with authority over America’s treatment of its citizens would not help people with disabilities and would have many harmful—and costly—consequences.

Report Details Security Concerns at U.S. Embassy in Kabul ," January 31, 2013, http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/Prayerwatch?pw=1116

A private security company hired by the State Department to protect American diplomats at arguably the most at-risk U.S. embassy in the world provided shoddy security, failed to adequately train its employees and fired staff who raised concerns about unchecked practices and procedures, according to a new report. The private guards hired at the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan say it remains dangerously vulnerable to attack, David Hilzenrath, editor at the Project on Government Oversight, told FoxNews.com. POGO, a non-profit Washington group, recently released a report that it claims highlights the on-going security issues at the Kabul compound. The concerns are being aired amid ongoing complaints about the lack of security at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in the run-up to the September 2012 terror attack.

"If we ever got seriously hit (by terrorists), there is no doubt in my mind the guard force here would not be able to handle it, and mass casualties and mayhem would ensue," one guard wrote in late November. Workers reportedly claimed that guards were rarely allowed to practice with their own weapons on the firing range, and that vehicles entering the compound were often not properly inspected for explosives. (Sources: Fox News, The Telegraph)

As the Lord leads, please pray:

  • For the safety of America’s ambassadors and representatives across the globe.
  • About ongoing threats of terror against the United States and our allies

"The Scandal of Silence - Our Persecuted Brethren;" John Stonestreet, Breakpoint.org; Jan. 04, 2013  http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/breakpoint-commentaries-search/entry/13/21164

[NOTE: I have used a daily prayer guide for persecuted believers for several years (see notation at the end of this post) and try to give to Open Doors that ministers to such believers as often as I can. There is nothing like praying for those who suffer greatly for their faith to put my own problems and struggles in perspective. - Stan]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It may be the scandal of 2012. And God forbid that it becomes the scandal of 2013.

Think back over this past year. What grabbed the attention of evangelical Christians? The presidential election. Mitt Romney’s Mormonism. Remember “Linsanity”—the excitement over the New York Knick’s Christian basketball star? There was the fight over religious freedom and the HHS mandate (although, let’s be clear, it’s taken many evangelicals far too long to pay attention to that threat). Social justice is a recurring theme, especially among younger Christians.
All well and good.

But something’s missing on the list. Something that should have the Church shouting from the rooftops. But instead, like the Obama Administration and the media, American Christians for the most part remained stone silent about the outrageous, brutal, and systematic persecution of Christians—especially in the Islamic world.

Look, I’m guilty too. This wasn’t on my radar until I recorded this weekend’s “BreakPoint This Week” radio show with WORLD magazine columnist Mindy Belz and Ed Stetzer of LifeWay Research. As we looked back at all the issues that Christians focused on in 2012, Mindy pointed out that the persecution of Christians is perhaps our biggest blind spot.

And she’s right. Mindy’s done a great job reporting on the murderous rampage of the Islamic group Boko Haram against Christians in Nigeria. Church bombings, machete attacks, targeted killing of church leaders. You name it. Yet the Administration was silent. Or worse. A recent Wall Street Journal article quoted an administration official, who “sanitized the intentions of this murderous group” by claiming that "The bulk of the Boko Haram movement is . . . trying to do everything in its power to show that the (Nigerian) government is ineffective.” But as the article points out, however, “two months before the official spoke, Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for the murder of dozens of Christians in the city of Jos—just one of many such attacks.”

And of course, it’s not just Nigeria. Entire Christian communities have disappeared in Iraq. In Syria, Christians are being targeted by Islamist radicals mixed in with the Syrian opposition forces. Mindy reported on this way back in February of 2012.  As Mindy reported, “According to … sources, Islamic militants fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad have killed more than 200 Christians in [Homs)… in recent days, including entire families with young children. They’ve also kidnapped Christians and demanded ransom payments.”
And that was almost a year ago! How many Syrian Christians have perished since? Just three days ago, the UK’s Daily Mail reported that Islamists beheaded a Christian taxi driver.

Where’s the American press? Again, why is this Administration silent? Writer Jeffrey Goldberg at the Atlantic may have the answer. He wrote: “The most under-covered story these days is the sustained assault by Islamist terrorists on Christians . .  I don't know precisely why this story, and stories like it, disappear so quickly, though I assume it has something to do with the seeming unwillingness of Christian churches in the West to stand up for their persecuted brethren in countries like Nigeria.” God have mercy on us if that’s true.

OK. So now what? What do we do? First, learn more about the issue. [Go to the web address listed above that is the source of this article and  there are a number of articles listed that you can go to.]... Second, talk about Christian persecution to your family and friends. Support groups that help persecuted Christians. Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter. Write or phone your congressman and the administration. Letters to the editor. Hey pastors, how about highlighting the persecuted church once a month from the pulpit? Whatever you can think of, do it.

But most of all, pray for our brothers and sisters persecuted for their faith. For their sake, we cannot remain silent.

"Whither the Boy Scouts? - BSA’s Significant Decision," - by: John Stonestreet: January 31, 2013, http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/entry/13/21379

Early this week, the Boy Scouts of America announced that they may soon drop their national policy that prohibits openly homosexual Scouts and Scout leaders from participating. Instead, it would allow local units to make the decision. So in other words, Scout units based in Bible-believing churches may continue to uphold their moral and religious convictions on human sexuality. And homosexual youths and adults will no doubt find units based in public schools or more liberal churches that would welcome them.

So what does all this mean?
First, this change is about survival for the Scouts, not new convictions. For years, the organization has been the target of gay activists and atheist groups. And those characters know exactly how to hit organizations that oppose them where it hurts most: in the pocketbook and in court. Already, many major corporations and charities have been pressured into de-funding the Boy Scouts. And for years the Scouts have incurred the heavy financial burden of defending their ability to set their own membership standards all the way to the Supreme Court. It may be that the Scouts have decided the only way for the organization to survive is to allow local groups to decide for themselves.

But even so, I think this policy change is a bad decision, not just for the Scouts, but for our country and our culture. For one thing, even if the Boy Scouts do go ahead and let local affiliates decide whether to allow homosexuals to participate, many gay activists won’t call off the assault. As the father of a scout who had proclaimed his open homosexuality told the Daily Beast, “This is really only half the battle. BSA is still going to allow discrimination [against gays] in those local units that believe it to be the right thing to do. The eventual outcome,” he says, “has to be the complete removal of any opportunity to discriminate in any form. This is a major victory, but we haven’t yet won the war.”

And don’t think atheist groups haven’t noticed. Just Wednesday, the Freedom from Religion Foundation said “It is absolutely outrageous that the Boy Scouts of America, which has proudly excluded both atheists and gays from its membership, announced yesterday” that it is considering “lifting its ban on gays — but not atheists.”

So you see, no matter what the Scouts do, the war against them—and religious freedom—will continue. And it’s more than just the Scouts who will pay. You’ve heard Chuck Colson, Eric Metaxas, and me speak many times here on BreakPoint about the importance of intermediate institutions—the family, churches, synagogues, civic groups and associations like the Boy Scouts. These institutions are essential in shaping character, forming solid citizens, and creating responsible communities. The Boy Scouts in particular have offered the young men in our society training in leadership and responsibility, that for many, set them on solid ground for the future.

But for years these institutions have been increasingly marginalized by the state, and targeted by homosexual and anti-religion activists. If the Boy Scouts will cave under this pressure, activists will think they can do it to anybody. And don’t think they won’t try.

So here are three things you can do right now. First, call the national Boy Scouts Headquarters and encourage them to stand strong against this bullying. Call the Boy Scouts National Headquarters: 972-580-2000.  Second, call your local Scout leaders or Scout councils. Urge them to call the national headquarters as well. And third, of course, pray. Pray for wisdom for all Boy Scout leaders and the future of this organization that has served our nation’s young men so well for so long.

Urge the group to maintain its current selection process for finding adult leaders. The people who will be voting on this issue need to hear affirmation of the historical foundations of scouting. They need to know people are with them. Please BE IN PRAYER that they will do so.

"Pray for the Johns Day - Changing Lives on Super Bowl Sunday." Eric Metaxas, Breakpoint.org;
January 30, 2013

Quick: What’s the big event that’s happening this Sunday? Chances are extremely good that the answer that popped into your head, without even having to think about it, was “the Super Bowl.” Whether you watch football or not, you probably know that America’s biggest and best-loved game takes place this weekend. There’s always so much hype surrounding the Super Bowl, it’s almost impossible not to know about it.
But here’s something that you might not know: Major sporting events like the Super Bowl tend to cause an increase in sex trafficking. It’s tragic, but true. As WANE.com in Indiana reported last year, “Girls as young as 12 to 14 are being shipped to Super Bowl host cities and sold as prostitutes to meet the demand for sex at the event.  And it’s getting worse.”
Ernie Allen of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children added, “The operators of these enterprises will use these kids as commodities, bring them to a community, and will literally sell them to people who are partying and having a good time and think there's nothing wrong with what they're doing.” The magnitude of this horrific problem can seem so overwhelming that it makes us feel helpless. Is there anything that you can do to help save these kids? Well, yes, you can start with one very simple but very important action: prayer.
Super Bowl Sunday will mark the second annual Pray for the Johns Day. The event was created by Christian writer Anna Broadway, who has long been interested in the subjects of “relational brokenness” and human trafficking. It occurred to Anna that while many Christians are making laudable efforts to help trafficking victims, we haven’t paid much attention to the men who are paying for the sex.
But these men, she reminds us, are spiritually lost and in great need of prayer. That’s why she created Pray for the Johns Day. Anna says, “[We’re] praying that they would turn from the sin and the harm and the wrong that they’re doing, and repent of it. That their lives would transform and they would become the men God made them to be.” That kind of transformation can be nothing but a blessing, not just for the men themselves, but for our entire society.

Wherever there are men who think it’s okay to buy little girls for sex, that it’s all just a natural part of “partying and having a good time,” that’s the sign of a very sick culture. These men are mired in evil, and they’re destroying both their own lives and the lives of innocent victims. The only thing that can possibly help them is repentance and restoration through Christ—which is why Anna’s idea is such a great one. And moving it to Super Bowl Sunday, when sex trafficking is at its height, was a particularly inspired touch.

So here are her three recommended steps: “(1) Pray for the johns before, during or after the game on Sunday, Feb. 3. [note suggested pray at link under "Pray for the John's Day below](2) Encourage your church to pray for the johns during corporate worship that day. (3) Tell other friends about this event.” I hope you’ll consider taking part in Pray for the Johns Day, and telling your friends about it. Prayer might seem like a small thing, but through it, you can help change even the darkest and most depraved lives.
