Carrie DeKlyen, of Wyoming, Michigan, and her husband, Nick, have five children and a sixth on the way. WOOD TV reports the family refused to participate in a clinical trial that could have prolonged Carrie’s life because doctors said she would have to abort her unborn baby girl.
Now, in a race against time, doctors are trying to keep Carrie and her unborn daughter well enough to reach 28 weeks of pregnancy, so the baby has the best chance of survival, according to the report. She currently is about 20 weeks pregnant.
“We are a family of faith,” said Sonya Nelson, Carrie’s sister. “And so we are just believing that God’s plan for Carrie is to be healed. And if he chooses to heal her here or in heaven, we will still trust in him.”
Carrie has glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer. Since she was diagnosed in April, she has undergone two surgeries to remove the tumor from her brain, but the cancer has returned, according to the report. Several weeks ago, she began chemotherapy.
According to the family, Carrie was semi-conscious on Wednesday at the University of Michigan Hospital. On the Facebook page Cure 4 Carrie, the family shared good news this week: “Carrie has been very responsive and her doctor believes she will wake up once the swelling in her brain goes down. They also removed the life lines that she had attached to her feet! This is some BIG news so I hope you can all rejoice with us!”
Her family said they hope Carrie will be able to see her daughter when she is born. “We would love for her to be able to see this gift that she gave. She gave this child the gift of life,” her sister said. “I believe God has big plans for this little girl! Through our great sorrow we look forward to this gift!”
The family is asking people to pray for Carrie and her unborn baby. Nelson also set up a GoFundMe page where people can donate to help with the family’s expenses.
