Sky News reports the men were trying to escape the Christian town of Maaloula, which has been under attack by rebel troops. The men reportedly were killed by forces with the al Qaeda linked Jabha al-Nour. Mourners say two of the victims had their throats cut and another was shot. Most of the mourners are also refugees from Maaloula, one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. [PRAY for the Christians throughout Syria who face greater persecution should rebels, particularly Islamists along the line of the Muslim Brotherhood, end up in charge of the country.]

"UN REPORT TAKES THE STEAM OUT OF “CLIMATE CHANGE,”- by: John Hayward, 9/20/2013 http://www.humanevents.com/2013/09/20/un-report-takes-the-steam-out-of-climate-change/

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently released a report that doesn’t find much evidence of “climate change” or “global warming” based on human activity, but nevertheless rushes to assure readers that the problem is still serious.  Not so fast, says the Heartland Institute and the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change it supports:

“Whereas the reports of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warn of a dangerous human effect on climate, NIPCC concludes the human effect is likely to be small relative to natural variability, and whatever small warming is likely to occur will produce benefits as well as costs,” the non-governmental panel announced, rolling out a hefty report with a succinct “summary for policymakers” to back up their claim. In essence, the NIPCC is calling shenanigans on the United Nations panel, accusing them of “departing from proper scientific methodology.”

Global climate models produce meaningful results only if we assume we already know perfectly how the global climate works, and most climate scientists say we do not (Bray and von Storch, 2010). Moreover, it is widely recognized that climate models are not designed to produce predictions of future climate but rather what-if projections of many alternative possible futures (Trenberth, 2009). Postulates, commonly defined as “something suggested or assumed as true as the basis for reasoning, discussion, or belief,” can stimulate relevant observations or experiments but more often are merely assertions that are difficult or impossible to test (Kahneman, 2011). Observations in science are useful primarily to falsify hypotheses and cannot prove one is correct (Popper, 1965, p. vii).

The defense against this criticism amounts to a despairing cry that we can’t afford to follow the scientific method when it comes to climate change, because the problem is so potentially severe that we don’t have time to find out if it’s real.  That’s a “sociological precept, rather than a scientific one,” as the NIPCC points out.  I would add that it’s also a very useful vehicle for grabbing political power and money. Also, it’s pretty rich to hear the people who constantly claim they’ve got science on their side frankly admit that they do not, but it doesn’t matter, because if you just bend and twist the data enough, you can pretend the “crisis” they’ve been warning about still exists, and we must spare no expense to avoid it.

Looking at the very same data the United Nations used, the NIPCC finds that none of the “climate change” models or predictions have panned out, the minimal temperature fluctuations observed throughout the industrial era are consistent with natural climate variations, and the global climate hasn’t warmed significantly during the last 16 years, even though plenty of Demon Carbon has been created by human activity.

Like a growing number of serious climate scientists, the NIPCC sees a higher possibility of global cooling over the coming decades, which may or may not be a good thing, but clearly has nothing to do with the Church of Global Warming’s dogma about air-conditioner emissions turning the Earth into a huge TastyBake oven.  Furthermore, if natural global cooling is a bad thing, there might not be much the human race can do about it… outside of doing everything the Church of Global Warming has inflicted billions of dollars in economic damage trying to halt, that is.  Perhaps Miami will name its first outdoor ice-skating rink after Al Gore.

The report is unsparing in its critique of global-warming activists: "The hypothesis of human-caused global warming comes up short not merely of “full scientific certainty” but of reasonable certainty or even plausibility. The weight of evidence now leans heavily against the theory. Invoking the precautionary principle does not lower the required threshold for evidence to be regarded as valid nor does it answer the most important questions about the causes and consequences of climate change. Scientific principles acknowledge the supremacy of experiment and observation and do not bow to instinctive feelings of alarm nor claims of a supposed scientific 'consensus' " (Legates et al., 2013).

Doubtless the response to this report will involve a great deal of caterwauling about the Heartland Institute, the agenda of the NIPCC, evil special interests, and so forth, none of which addresses the content of the report.  Besides, it’s absolutely comical to pretend the climate-change fanatics aren’t motivated by special interests, greed, and political agendas.  The amount of money they stand to lose from the collapse of their man-made global warming con job is astronomical.  Gigantic fortunes and political careers are at stake.

There’s a lot more evidence to question the integrity of the global-warming crowd than their critics.  As luck would have it, the Associated Press broke some news today about pressure on the U.N. researchers from various governments to hide embarrassing data pertaining to that mysterious 16-year-and-counting “pause” in global warming.  Politicians are not eager to lose an irrefutable demand for power and control - do what we say or you want the Earth to die, you’re no better than a Holocaust denier.  By all means, let’s have a nice little chat about which side of this debate has greater incentives to distort and misinterpret the data.

Another bit of low comedy at the expense of the global-warming faithful comes from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy was asked if those super-expensive job-crushing global warming regulations were affecting any of the 26 indicators the agency laid out to measure our planetary climate crisis.  She bubbled out a lot of bureaucratic nonsense about the importance of global leadership… but no, she couldn’t say that any of these regulations has actually done a blessed thing to combat global warming.

Reams of taxpayer dollars, spent to no measurable effect other than making politicians and bureaucrats feel good about themselves.  Lovely. We really should have brought the global warming fraudsters up on criminal charges a long time ago.  They’ve gotten away with the crime of the century.  But if we’re not going to put them behind bars, or at least make them repay the money they appropriated, we can at least swat them off the world stage with a rolled-up temperature chart.

"Hope, Our Only Offer - The Gospel in Times of Tragedy," - by: Eric Metaxas| Breakpoint.org: September 25, 2013, http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/breakpoint-commentaries-archive/entry/13/23414?spMailingID=7035243&spUserID=MTMyMjM2ODE5OQS2&spJobID=90005039&spReportId=OTAwMDUwMzkS1

Another month, another shooting. What does the Gospel have to offer in the face of tragedy? ...
On Monday, September 16th a disturbed thirty-four year-old named Aaron Alexis entered the Washington Navy Yard and opened fire. By the time the shooting was over, thirteen people, including Alexis, were dead.In the aftermath, the discussions focused on guns, mental illness, and security at military facilities. But for many of us, what happened that morning was yet another reminder of the fragility and seeming senselessness of life.

Here at BreakPoint, these are far from academic issues. We have friends and neighbors who work at the Navy Yard. And one of our number is grieving the loss of a church member who was killed that tragic morning. What Christians have to offer is not better policies. What we have to offer is something far more precious: genuine hopeChristian hope is not optimism, which is merely a way of seeing things. And it certainly isn’t positive thinking” or any such pablum.

Christian hope is the conviction that God is not done with His creation but, on the contrary, has begun the process of setting things right. It is the conviction that because of Jesus’ triumph over sin, death and Hell, the process of restoration is under way.

I know it's difficult to perceive God at work when so much seems to have gone so wrong. The author of Hebrews also understood that. After writing that God had put “everything in subjection to him,” that is Jesus, he acknowledged that “at present we do not see all things subject to him.” Then came five of the most glorious words in Scripture: “but we do see Jesus.” The Jesus, who “for the sake of the joy that lay before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and [who] has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.” The “joy that lay before him” was the source of Jesus’ hope, and it’s meant to be the source of ours. It’s why Paul told the Romans that “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

In his tremendous book, “Christ the Tiger,” my friend and theologian Thomas Howard provides a powerful glimpse of that glory. In the manner of a prophet assuming God’s voice, he writes, “I tell you of the world for which this world groans and toward which it strains. I tell you that beyond the awful borders imposed by time and space and contingency, there lies what you seek. I announce to you life instead of mere existence, freedom instead of frustration, justice instead of compensation.”

What then follows is the substance of Christian hope, secured by Jesus’ victory over sin, death and Hell itself: “Behold I make all things new . . . I restore the years that the locusts and worms have eaten. I restore the years you have drooped away upon your crutches and in your wheel-chair. I restore the symphonies and operas which your deaf ears have never heard, and the snowy massif your blind eyes have never seen, and the freedom lost to you through plunder . . . and I restore the good which your own foolish mistakes have cheated you of.”

That is hope. It will not undo the pain and suffering, but it insists that the sufferings of this world will not have the final word. This assurance, more than policy, is what people need. And it’s what we have to offer.

If you’re interested in Thomas Howard’s tremendous book “Christ the Tiger,” we have it for you at our online bookstore at BreakPoint.org. And please, be sure to check out BreakPoint at Facebook.

[NOTE: Did you know that  EVERY DAYaround 3,500 girls and women  in America alone have abortions (and that not that long ago it was as many as 4,200 daily!) ? And, ...]

Contrary to popular opinion abortion hurts women.
TheUnChoice.com is an evidence-based Elliot Institute campaign to raise awareness about unwanted abortions, post-abortion issues and maternal deaths and to provide help, hope and healing.
The US-based Elliot Institute  publishes research and educational materials and works as an advocate for women and men seeking post-abortion healing.
The following figures, referenced below from an Elliott Institute publication, are eight evidence-based facts about the consequences of abortion for women’ health.  I have, where possible linked the references to the original sources.
1. 31% of women having abortions report suffering physical health complications (1)
2. 10% of women having abortions suffer immediate, potentially life-threatening complications (2, 3, 4)
3. Women have a 65% higher risk of clinical depression following abortion vs. childbirth (5)
4. 65% of women suffer symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after abortion (1)
5. Women’s death rates from various causes after abortion are 3.5 times higher than after giving birth  (6, 7)
6. Many women describe their experience as ‘a nightmare’, which can hardly equated with ‘choice’. 60% of women surveyed after abortion responded that: ’Part of me died’ (1)
7. Suicide rates among women who have abortions are six times higher than those who give birth (7, 8)
8. Abortion increases a woman’s risk of future miscarriages by 60% (9)

"Plan to Suspend Debt Limit Means Debt Would Rise to $17.8 Trillion," - by Romina Boccia On September 25, 2013

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced [2] a new debt ceiling deadline today, urging congressional lawmakers and the President to come to an agreement concerning the nation’s borrowing authority by October 17. Republicans are proposing a $1.1 trillion increase in the debt limit by suspending the cap through December 2014. The big question is: Will lawmakers take control of the key drivers of soaring spending and debt as part of an increase? Recent news reports suggest the answer is largely no.

According to Bloomberg [3]: The House Republican plan would suspend the debt cap until Dec. 31, 2014, according to a proposal distributed by party leaders to Republican members and obtained by Bloomberg News. House Republicans said it is a plan that would save at least $256 billion from budget revisions and changes to entitlement programs.

The $256 billion in savings, especially if some of the savings come from important changes to mandatory programs, is a start. But in the big picture, the proposal is woefully inadequate. Republicans have all but given up on the Boehner rule [4], requiring a dollar in cuts or reforms for a dollar increase in the debt limit. They are already $300 billion behind, and this latest proposal would put them $1.1 trillion deeper in the hole.

BL-debt-limit-suspended-2013 [5]  BL-debt-limit-suspended-2013

Congress and the President last suspended the debt ceiling from February 4, 2013, through May 18, 2013, adding $300 billion to the national debt in less than four months. Their only request was that the Senate produce a budget for the first time in four years, which it did. No savings were accomplished. Suspending the debt limit through December 31, 2014, would add an approximate $1.1 trillion [6] to the debt, for a total increase in the debt ceiling of $1.4 trillion in less than two years.

A lot is at stake this fall. Recent projections by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) show that publicly held debt, which makes up 60 percent [7] of the debt subject to the limit, could reach 100 percent of gross domestic product as soon as 2028 [8]. At such high levels, debt poses serious risks for economic growth [9]. As Heritage economist Salim Furth explains [10]: The CBO’s sobering numbers should motivate Congress to pass serious entitlement reform now—while it can still be done through gradual reforms and not Greek-style austerity.

Congress should implement spending cuts and entitlement reforms before—or as part of—an increase in the debt ceiling. Lawmakers still have time to put forth a plan that puts the budget on a path to balance and avoids a debt crisis today and in the future [11]. The clock is ticking.

"...Instead of pursuing significant spending cuts and entitlement reforms that are desperately needed to get spending under control, House Republicans reportedly are proposing to suspend the debt ceiling for more than a year, which would add $1.1 trillion to the debt. So, take that $43,000 per household that was added in the last four years and tack on another $8,800 per household..."

"Budget Showdown Centers on Obamacare Concerns" - By George Thomas, Thursday, September 26, 2013 http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2013/September/Cruz-Stand-and-Fight-to-Defund-Obamacare/

‘DEFUND NOW, FOR WHEN SHALL WE BE STRONGER?’ - by: David Limbaugh
9/24/2013 http://www.humanevents.com/2013/09/24/defund-now-for-when-shall-we-be-stronger/

“They tell us, sir, that we are weak, unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be next week or the next year?” Will it be when Obamacare has metastasized into every sector of our economy? “Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope? … Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power.” We are “millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty.”

No, Patrick Henry is no longer with us, and the once-tyrannical British empire is not our foe, but this nation — since it acquired its independence shortly after Henry’s call for it — has never faced such a sustained assault from within on its liberty and its founding principles.

It is high time that the conservative movement, the Republican Party and every American patriot united together to actively and fiercely oppose the statist assaults on our freedoms and, in particular, the legislative menace known as Obamacare.

But a large faction of our fellow patriots on the right tell us — as they’ve told us nearly every time we’ve had a debate with President Obama over the budget — that we must be more pragmatic and hold our fire because if we fight back too aggressively, we will be blamed for the government’s shutting down and it will damage our cause far worse in the long run.Well, the “pragmatists” usually have prevailed, but their predictions haven’t. We always ended up caving — though often the pragmatists have rationalized our defeats as victories — and President Obama won re-election anyway.

It didn’t have to be that way. I believe that we have more informed, freedom-loving patriots in this country yearning for a restoration of our founding principles than we’ve had in decades and that they are just longing for political leadership around which to coalesce — and go to war, figuratively.

Some of the pragmatists accuse the defunders of allowing our passions to overpower our reason or of self-serving intellectual dishonesty; we allegedly know we can’t defund but are angling to enrich or empower ourselves by pretending otherwise. Some defunders, in turn, cast the pragmatists as RINOs — Republicans in name only. Many are, but I happen to believe that most on both sides of the intramural debate are honorable and at least somewhat right-of-center.

I agree, in part, with the pragmatists that this is an argument over tactics, but I think it is more than that. I believe that the defunders are more alarmed over the current state of affairs in this nation under Obama and rightly convinced that we don’t have a lot of time left to prevent the Obama juggernaut from “fundamentally transforming the nation” and bankrupting us. We may agree on the strategy of restoring Republican control of the executive and legislative branches, but we probably don’t fully agree on the precise ideological makeup of that majority or on whether Obamacare — and the rest of the Obama agenda — is ultimately tolerable.

The pragmatists point to the polls, which allegedly say the GOP will be blamed — no matter what — for a government shutdown. Well, I don’t trust how any such poll’s questions were framed. I don’t believe that any poll can accurately forecast something as dynamic and uncertain as a national debate that hasn’t yet fully unfolded. And I agree with Sen. Ted Cruz that we have already come further than the naysayers thought we would and that our side, with unity and resolve, might just be able to rally public support behind our cause in opposing this woefully unpopular legislation in the event of a shutdown — particularly a shutdown that Obama himself will have brought about by refusing to allow the government to stay open for everything but Obamacare. A unified leadership might be able even to change some votes in the Senate. This is not that far-fetched when considering all the ammunition leaders will have at their disposal, including the report from The New York Times that lower health insurance premiums may come at the cost of fewer choices for patients — as many of us Obamacare opponents have long predicted — and the Forbes report that Obamacare will increase health care spending by $7,450 for a typical family of four.

Changing the outcome in the Senate may be unlikely, but what is far from certain is that the GOP will be damaged, on balance, if a shutdown occurs because Obama insists on preserving Obamacare at all costs. Though no one on either side knows for sure, I think that fighting a defunding battle, even if Republicans lose, will greatly enhance, rather than diminish, the GOP’s prospects in 2014 and 2016.

The pragmatists always seem so fatalistic and defeatist in these battles, surrendering before we even begin the fight. But there is no telling how many millions of Americans have become wholly disillusioned by the GOP’s reluctance to fight Obama and to offer an inspiring alternative agenda. These people — millions, armed in the holy cause of liberty — are craving leadership from Republicans who understand the gravity of our current path, and they will rally around it in surprising numbers if Republicans provide it.

I refuse to believe — even in today’s America — that liberals care more about growing the state and smothering our liberties than we do about limiting the state and preserving our liberties. “Forbid it, Almighty God!”

You want to talk pragmatism? Once Obamacare is fully implemented, it will not implode of its own weight as our pragmatic Pollyannas predict. Behemoth entitlements never do

If we are to roll back Obama’s destruction, we have to begin, at long last, to fight as if the future of the country is on the line — because it is.

"Behind the scenes, more than 600,000 people around the world have signed a petition sponsored by ACLJ in support of pastor Abedini. A concerted movement this past May brought together Christians from many nations to set aside Pentecost to pray for Abedini. On June 13, demonstrations were held at Iranian embassies in at least six countries to protest Abedini’s treatment. And, on July 29, Arizona Republican Representative Trent Franks spoke on the floor of the House to urge other Congressmen to join him in “adopting” Pastor Abedini through the bipartisan Defending Freedoms Project."

Saeed’s response…and yours - Through his family living in Iran, Pastor Abedini has been made aware of these efforts on his behalf, and is grateful. “I heard that the persecution, my arrest and imprisonment has united churches from different denominations, from different cities and countries. That the churches have united together in prayer to put one request (my freedom) on one day (Pentecost) before God,” he wrote in a letter.

The story of Saeed Abedini, the jihad against Syrian Christians, the attacks on Coptic Christians in Egypt, and the ongoing desecration of churches in Nigeria and India should cause every American to reflect on the blessings of freedom still enjoyed in this nation.

"6 Reasons Why the National Debt Keeps Rising," - by Josh Shepherd On September 23, 2013

Out-of-control spending by Congress and the Obama Administration has once again maxed out the latest debt limit—a nearly $17 trillion burden that harms job growth [1], gives special interests a pass, and lowers American families’ personal income. Inspired by Dave Ramsey’s recent post “6 Reasons People Stay in Debt,” [2] we compiled six reasons why Members of Congress, the Obama Administration, and others in Washington avoid the path to financial stability [3] in favor of big spending…

Share this graphic on Facebook [4]Ramsey_debt_500

1. They want to keep up appearances.

The truth is, ever-growing entitlement programs drive ever-greater government spending. Everyone knows it. Some leaders in both parties have even worked together on first-step solutions agreeable to both sides [5]. Yet rather than risk Warren Buffett’s taxpayer-funded benefits decreasing [6], politicians pretend America’s national budget can handle all the extensive promises they’ve made over the past several decades.

2. They are unwilling to sacrifice even wasteful spending.

Like a recent guest on “Hannity [7],” some in Washington will defend even the most ridiculous spending. Yet Congress could eliminate billions in spending tomorrow. Heritage expert Patrick Louis Knudsen, who spent two decades working on the House Budget Committee, recently went line-by-line through the federal budget to find $42 billion in unnecessary, poorly run, and duplicative federal government programs [8].

3. They fear changing “business as usual” in Washington.

Politicians are masters at playing the game. Because Americans are waking up to the fiscal crisis we are in, today policymakers in both parties use any number of legislative “back doors” to increase the debt ceiling—without looking like they did. CNN reports [9]: Since it’s a politically tough vote, they occasionally devise clever ways to tacitly approve increases without ever having to publicly record a “yes” vote.

For example, as part of the deal to resolve the 2011 debt ceiling war [10], Congress approved a plan that let President Obama raise the debt limit three times unless both the House and Senate passed a “joint resolution of disapproval.” Such a measure never materialized. And even if it had, the president could have vetoed it.

4. They’re addicted to stuff.

Policymakers in Washington enjoy a good haircut, lavish conference vacations, and even renovating their bathrooms [11]… all at our expense. How does so [12] much [13] wasteful [14] spending [15] get into the federal budget? Follow the money. When government keeps doling out so much to so many, it’s inevitable that Washington’s 10,000+ registered lobbyists [16] get in on the bureaucrats’ action—while helping along a few re-election campaigns in the process.

5. They don’t know how to see long-term.

Word has it that the 2013 deficit will be lower than previous years [17]. Let’s not break out the confetti just yet. This short-term change is due in part to massive tax increases signed into law by President Obama [18]. Moreover, this year’s $642 billion deficit adds to the already massive national debt. Nearing $17 trillion, the debt is depressing job growth [19] and opportunity for American families.

6. They lack the courage to lead on spending reform.

Clearly there are real proposals on the table to get the budget under control. Heritage offers Saving the American Dream [20], a budget framework that wisely resets spending levels back to historical norms. Even with recent legislative action on defunding Obamacare [21], it is unclear whether Congress will ultimately follow through and fully defund this unfair, unworkable, unaffordable law before its massive new entitlements go into effect.

We can change our current course, support a budget based on real Constitutional priorities, and set free the unlimited genius of Americans to create jobs, wealth, and prosperity. Find out how you can spread the word >> [22]
