#2688 (5/31) "Supreme Showdown: Ginsburg v. Thomas"

"SUPREME SHOWDOWN: GINSBURG V. THOMAS" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, May 29, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190529/supreme-showdown
--------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
There are at least 20 abortion cases in the Supreme Court pipeline, but as Americans learned yesterday -- Indiana's won't be the one challenging Roe v. Wade. In another mixed bag for pro-lifers, the justices only ruled on the half of the law dealing with fetal remains. They couldn't bring themselves to decide the more explosive issue: race-, sex-, and disability-based abortions. It's another instance, Justice Clarence Thomas said, of "kicking the can down the road." And pretty soon, he warns, the court is going to run out of road to kick it to.

They are the two longest-serving justices -- and easily the most diverse. Justice Thomas and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg have been on opposite sides of hundreds of issues over the years -- so Tuesday's battle of opinions wasn't anything new for the duo. What it was to many Americans, however, was enlightening. As the Washington Post points out, Justice Thomas is the only one left on the court who participated in 1992's landmark abortion case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey. He's also one of the four justices "who said they would have effectively overturned Roe if they could."

Twenty-seven years later, the justice known for his silence during arguments had plenty to say in his concurring opinion in this case-- most specifically, to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. By a 7-2 vote, the court agreed with Indiana's mandate that any bodies or remains from an abortion be disposed with dignity -- either by burial or cremation. But that was just part of the question before the court. Under the bill signed by then-Governor Mike Pence, Indiana also banned women from ending their pregnancies because of sex, race, or a "potential diagnoses" like Down syndrome. And amazingly, that was part of the law the court refused to defend.

To Justice Thomas's horror, the court essentially gave its consent to Hoosiers targeting their babies for certain traits or characteristics. "In other contexts," he wrote, "the Court has been zealous in vindicating the rights of people even potentially subjected to race, sex, and disability discrimination." But by refusing to uphold this law, he went on, the court may as well be "constitutionaliz[ing] the views of the 20th-century eugenics movement," which -- Thomas explains -- were the vision of Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger.

Thomas spent paragraphs detailing the horrible skeletons in Planned Parenthood's closet. "Sanger herself campaigned for birth control in black communities," Thomas detailed. "In 1930, she opened a birth-control clinic in Harlem...Then, in 1939, Sanger initiated the 'Negro Project,' an effort to promote birth control in poor, Southern black communities... In a report titled 'Birth Control and the Negro,' Sanger and her coauthors identified blacks as 'the great problem of the South' -- the group with 'the greatest economic, health, and social problems.'" In other words, he warned, "The use of abortion to achieve eugenic goals is not merely hypothetical," he argued.

Ginsburg, meanwhile, duked it out with Thomas in the footnotes, writing that Indiana was imposing an "undue burden." "A woman who exercises her constitutionally protected right to terminate a pregnancy is not a 'mother,'" she insists. Then what on earth are they? Landlords? Hosts? What a woman does to her child has no impact on what she is to her child. Just as men don't magically become fathers after their babies are born. Parents are created -- just as children are -- at the moment of conception. No wonder Thomas fired back in his own footnote that Justice Ginsburg "makes little sense."

"It is not a 'waste' of our resources to summarily reverse an incorrect decision that created a Circuit split." It's time, he said to "confront the constitutionality of these laws... [W]e cannot avoid them forever." The court invented a right to abortion, he argued. Now it's "dutybound to address its scope."

#2687 (5/30) "The Gods of Our Age -Our Short Course on Sex, State, Science, and Stuff"

"THE GODS OF OUR AGE -OUR SHORT COURSE ON SEX, STATE, SCIENCE, AND STUFF"by John Stonestreet  and David Carlson, Breakpoint.org, May 30, 2019; https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gods-of-our-age-short-course-tickets-61202081072
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” God’s commandment to Israel could not have been clearer, but for Israel, keeping it was not so easy. Each time God’s people turned to “other gods” like Baal or Molech—despite the dire and repeated warnings by the prophets—the result was disaster.

Of course, worshiping false gods is not a Middle Eastern specialty. The history of the Church is filled with battles against pagan gods, such as Zeus, Athena, Odin, or any number of Celtic and Slavic deities. Even today, we’ll sometimes hear of a pagan revival, but it’s typically some fringe story of an Icelander worshiping Thor.
Still, it would be a grave mistake to think idol worship is a thing only of the past or of primitive cultures. Throughout Western culture, scientifically advanced as it is, we are guilty of the sin of idolatry—including many Christians. The gods we worship don’t have personal names, but they do have their “high places.” They may not have statues or altars like Asherah poles, but they do have prophets and priestesses.

Here are four big idols of our age (and because I used to be Baptist, they all begin with the letter S):  Sex, State, Science, and Stuff.
Each of these things are good, in and of themselves. Without sex, there would be no us. Without state, chaos. Without science, ignorance. Without stuff, poverty. But when even good things come to occupy a place in our heart where only God belongs, when we put our trust in them and see ourselves in their image, they become our gods, and we become idolaters.

This is the topic of our next online short course: “The Gods of Our Age.” I’ll kick off the course talking about the god of Stuff, followed by Dr. Hunter Baker on the god of State. In so many ways, we look to government to supply our deepest needs, from safety to meaning and fulfillment. Then the one and only Dr. J. P . Moreland, who has just written an excellent book on scientism, the idea that science is the source of all knowledge, will join the course to talk about that idol. Finally, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse will talk about how sex has become an ends of personal fulfillment, rather than a means of something higher, and in that sense has become a god of our age, too.

There are many reasons why we must understand our idols. One reason is that they are so subtle. No one would ever stand up and announce, “I trust in stuff to fill the God-shaped hole in my heart,” of course. And yet the pull of materialism is so strong. How many Americans find themselves in debt, or addicted to the promise of the next adventure, or just being less generous than they should be out of worry or concern?

Another reason we should understand our idols is because our idols diminish our understanding of God. T. S. Elliot said that the essence of idolatry is entertaining thoughts about Him that are not worthy of Him. Our idols make us think less about God, and at the same time, make us think about God less. Either of those paths leads to disaster.

And finally, how we think about God affects how we think about people. Psalm 135 says that those who worship and trust in idols become “like them.” The false gods of our age—including sex, stuff, state, and science—are the primary drivers behind the dehumanization we see across our culture. There’s so much more we can say about that.

Our short course, “The Gods of Our Age: Sex, State, Science, and Stuff” is completely online and begins Tuesday June 4. The course is held on four consecutive Tuesday nights, and includes a presentation by our guest instructor and a QandA session after that. Each session is recorded and made available to you, in case you have to miss a session or wish to review it. Go to BreakPoint.org to register while space is available.

The warning of the prophets is as true as ever: The path of idols is the path of destruction. But the promise offered throughout Scripture remains just as true: to know God is to know ourselves and to know life. What other reason would we need to rid ourselves of idols and restore the worship of God in our lives, in our families, and in our culture?

#2686 (5/29) "Are American Pastors Still Asleep In The Light?"

"ARE AMERICAN PASTORS STILL ASLEEP IN THE LIGHT?" Michael Brown: May 25, 2019; https://townhall.com/columnists/michaelbrown/2019/05/25/are-american-pastors-still-asleep-in-the-light-n2546706 [AS I SEE IT: Despite the tone of the title of this article, this is in no way meant to be a criticism of pastors who don't express concern on attacks on Christians here in  America. It's mainly meant to encourage such pastors to recognize the importance of their speaking up on the issue, and in turn keep their congregants informed and involved in opposing such attacks. - Stan]
Source: rclassenlayouts/iStock/Getty Images Plus

There are many fine pastors in America. They are devoted shepherds. They are faithful teachers of the Word. They care for their flocks. And when necessary, they sound the alarm.
For each of them, I am thankful. Some of them are dear friends and co-workers, and many of them have sacrificed much for God’s work and God’s people.

But there are all too many others who do not see the handwriting on the wall. They seem willfully ignorant of the “signs of the times.” For them and, even more, for their congregations, I am deeply concerned.
According to a recent Barna survey, “a plurality of the general population believes freedom of religion in the U.S. is worse than it was 10 years ago.” In contrast, during that same time period, “the proportion of Protestant pastors who fear religious liberties may be further restricted in the future has actually dropped.” Dropped? Seriously?

At a time when our religious liberties are under attack from every corner – from our children’s schools to our places of business and from the internet to the courts – how can it be that many Protestant pastors are less concerned now than before?
According to Barna, “In the 2014 survey of all Christian and non-Christian clergy, over half of Protestant pastors (55 percent) admitted they were very concerned that religious freedom will become more restricted in the next five years; this percentage fell to below half (49 percent) in the 2015 / 2016 study and to one-third (34 percent) in 2017.”

Indeed, “If signs of concern waned during these years, it’s not because emphasis on religious freedom was any less prominent in national news.
   In 2015, in particular, there were several high-profile religious liberty stories, including the controversial passage (and amendment) of the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which proponents claimed was intended to restrict government’s ability to infringe on religious rights;
   the landmark ruling in Obergefell vs. Hodges in the Supreme Court, granting marriage rights to same-sex couples;
and threats to repeal the accreditation of Gordon College for their statement of faith on marriage as limited to a man and a woman. Considering these events in light of a perceived drop in Protestant pastors’ concerns about religious freedom, there is perhaps less of a ‘headline sensitivity’ than one might expect.”

Could it be that these pastors feel more confidence because of the positive steps the Trump administration has taken to reinforce our religious liberties? That is certainly possible, and the president has done a lot for the cause of religious liberty, from his war against the Johnson Amendment to his many fine federal court appointees. And he has used his bully pulpit to speak up for our freedoms.
At the same time, it would be foolish for us to think that the national tide had somehow turned and that our religious liberties were not under serious and real attack. And what happens if a radical, leftist Democrat becomes our next president? What will things look like then?

In my 2011 book, A Queer Thing Happened to America, I devoted one whole chapter to the assault on our freedoms, noting, “The really frightening thing is that it would be easy to write an entire book focusing on the subject matter of this chapter alone, and the book could be much longer than this present book – and this is one long book!” (For the record, the book was 700 pages long with 1,500 endnotes. The chapter in question was more than 17,000 words long.)
That was back in 2011, and even then, I could list numerous, full-length books documenting this very real assault on our most fundamental freedoms – namely, our freedoms of speech, conscience, and religion.
For example, in 2003, David Limbaugh wrote, Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity.
That same year Alan Sears and Craig Osten wrote, The Homosexual Agenda: Exposing the Principal Threat to Religious Freedom Today.
In 2009, Donald Wildom wrote, Speechless: Silencing the Christians.
Also in 2009, Janet Foler wrote, The Criminalization of Christianity: Read This Book Before It Becomes Illegal!
In 2010, Tammy Bruce wrote, The New Thought Police: Inside the Left's Assault on Free Speech and Free Minds.

This is just a representative sampling, and some of these books are more than 15 years old.
In fact, reading their content only underscores the urgency of the hour we live in today. In many ways, the warnings were quite prescient – and remember: these were written before social media giants like Google and Facebook had fully shown their hands.
Today, you need a very large, detailed scorecard to keep track of the latest assaults on our religious liberties, to the point that some major organizations (such as the ADL or Liberty Counsel or the FRC) sound out daily updatesThat’s why this Barna survey should be of special concern. [italics and colored emphasis mine]

Our leaders need to wake up and speak up – while they still have the chance.
And to every congregant who would say, “My pastor is not sounding the alarm or giving us constructive steps to take,” I offer you this counsel.
First, pray for them, don’t gossip about them. They have a lot on their plate and face many unique challenges.
Second, send them a note and say, “Pastor, we love you and are praying for you and we want you to raise your voice. On behalf of our families – especially our children and our grandchildren – please speak up and speak out.”
Then, remind them of the oft-quoted words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world it leaves to its children.”

#2685 (5/28) "Never Forget"

------------------------------------------

"NEVER FORGET" - Tony Perkins, Washington  Update, May 24, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190524/never-forget
 ------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of things have changed in America over the last several years, and how we treat Memorial Day is one of them. I remember as a kid all of the parades and veterans -- and how we stood and honored the flag. Fast-forward a generation and suddenly, people don’t just miss the significance of the holiday – they miss its entire meaning!

According to a shocking new Harris Poll, only 55 percent of this country can explain the purpose behind Memorial Day is to honor the fallen from our nation’s wars. If you want to know why that’s significant, look at millennials, FRC’s Lt. General Jerry Boykin says. Half of them aren’t proud to be Americans, a recent survey shows. “Now, if you stop and think about it, what Memorial Day is all about is honoring those that gave the last full measure, honoring those who died fighting for this country. If young adults really knew what a sacrifice that has been made by those men and women that have stepped up and said, ‘Here am I -- send me’ by giving their lives in service to this country, they would certainly have more pride.”

We can talk about what’s not happening in our schools. We can talk about what’s not happening in our culture. But maybe we should be talking about what should be happening in our homes as parents and grandparents. What are some ways, I asked General Boykin, that some ways that that we can honor America with our kids?
“First of all, how you treat the American flag says a lot to those that are observing you. I have a big flagpole in my yard and you’ve seen it. But I want my children and my grandchildren, especially, to see me handle the flag – with reverence. I want them to understand that flag is more than a piece of cloth that not only represents an incredible history with a lot of sacrifice, but also hope for the future. Hope for the world.”
The other thing we have to do is encourage our children to read history by making it fun for them and getting them into programs that encourage it. For more than 230 years, men and women have given their lives to a cause greater than themselves. When we lost sight of what that cause is, there’s no reason to make such a costly sacrifice.

A lot of schools have stopped teaching history – and that’s very deliberate. One of the most poignant statements in George Orwell’s 1984 is that he who controls the present controls the past-- and who controls the past controls the future. And there’s no greater illustration of that than what’s happening in our schools today, as secularists try to destroy this idea of American exceptionalism, because they know that exceptionalism is rooting in a biblical Christian foundation.

The message of our roots is important -- and as an Americans, we need to be able to identify with the history and sacrifice that went into building this country. This weekend, the best gift we can give to a family who’s lost a hero in uniform is that you’ll cherish what they died for. Let’s pray more people [took] that to heart this [past] weekend as we honor and give thanks for the brave men and women who made this country possible.

"MEMORIAL DAY 2019 - STORIES OF SACRIFICE STILL BEING WRITTEN" by John Stonestreet and David Carlson, Breakpoint.org, May 27, 2019; http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/05/breakpoint-memorial-day-2019/ [AS I SEE IT: In the midst of having an extra day off from work, I hope that you will take a momen to PRAY for the families who have lost loved ones in service to our country, for those serving somewhere throughout the world, and for those wh are struggling with PTSD, esp. the estimated 20 who on average tragically commit suicide EACH DAY. May this serve to remind each of us that, truly, "freeedom isn't free." - Stan]
Chuck Colson never missed a single Memorial Day opportunity to remind us all to remember the fallen. Often he did so by telling the stories of those who sacrificed their lives so that others might live. In just a moment, I want you to [read] one such story from Chuck himself, from World War II. But before we do, there’s something else we should all remember. Some stories are still being written.

Since 2001, nearly 7,000 American service members have died overseas in any number of conflicts. So far this year, that number is 16. And their stories need to be heard as well. More on that in just a moment.

First, here’s Chuck Colson: It was February 1945—three months before the end of World War II. Eighteen-year-old Sergeant Joseph George was stationed in Lorient, France. It was evening, and George was preparing to go on patrol. The Americans were hoping to locate landmines buried by the Germans.
Sergeant George had been on patrol duty the night before. As he told his friend Private James Caudill, he was tired—tired and scared. Private Caudill offered to take the patrol on his behalf. He pointed out that, at age 36, he was nearly two decades older than George. He told George—who had already been blown off a torpedoed ship—to go home and live a full, rich life. And then Private Caudill went out on patrol. A few hours later, he was killed by a German sniper.
The actions of Private Caudill echo the values and valor of generations of military men and women we remember today. And it’s an example of the sort of behavior we almost take for granted when it comes to our men and women in uniform who fight just wars.

What is a just war? One that is defined as providing a proportionate response to evil, to protect non-combatants, among other considerations. Today, our military men and women around the world are fighting to resist evil. Ridding the world of Islamo-fascism—by just means—is a good and loving act.

This willingness to sacrifice on behalf of our neighbors is why military service is considered such a high calling for Christians—and part of what makes just wars just. Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica puts his discussion of just war in his chapter on charity—the love of God and neighbor. John Calvin agreed; he called soldiering justly a “God-like act,” because “it imitates God’s restraining evil out of love for His creatures.”
A world in which free nations refuse to fight just wars would be a world where evil is unchecked and where the strong would be free to prey on the weak—as we are now seeing in Darfur.

Which brings me back to Sgt. George. He returned safely home to West Virginia. He married, fathered five sons. One of them—Princeton Professor Robert George—is a good friend of mine. He’s devoted much of his life to fighting the moral evils of our time: abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and efforts to redefine marriage in a way that would destroy it.
In John 15:13, Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this, that [he] lay down his life for his friends.” The story of Private Caudill and Sergeant George makes one realize more deeply what a tremendous gift this is. It’s why the George family has remembered Private Caudill in prayers for sixty-one years.

Today, Memorial Day, we ought to remember the sacrifices of all the Private Caudills in all the wars Americans have fought—and we should pray for those who are still in the field—laying down their lives for each other, for us, and for the freedom of strangers. That’s a very Christian thing to do.
John Stonestreet here again: Today, American service men and women are still making the ultimate sacrifice. Please pray for their families. And in their honor today, why not read their stories. The Military Times website has a photo and a brief story of each and every service member who has perished abroad since 2001. Come to BreakPoint.org, click on this commentary, and I will link you to the Military Times site—and to those stories of the ones who still today are giving their all.

PRAYER MATTERS:

"To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against
the disorder of the world Karl Barth
"Prayer is inviting God into a seemingly impossible situation and trusting/resting in His love and grace to accomplish His perfect will in His perfect time and for His greatest glory. Intercession is  one of the great privileges AND responsibilities for EVERY believer."- Stan

“INTERCESSORS ARE THE RUDDER” – A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT - Wanda Alger, June 28th, 2017; https://www.getamericapraying.com/blog/I was recently given a word by my good friend, Bill Yount. His word greatly encouraged me as an intercessor. Working for Intercessors for America, I soon realized it was not just a word for me, but for all who have been praying for our nation, wondering if their prayers are truly making any difference. Bill told me, “I kept seeing you as a small rudder on a huge ship. Hidden, but giving guidance. Although it seemed slow it was turning the whole ship. Patience was needed to see the impact of your…ministry. I sense the Lord saying, ‘Don’t jump ship! I’ve made you the rudder!’ ” I was immediately touched in my spirit by this encouragement, knowing that our seemingly small place in prayer was having a great impact.
James 3:4 talks about the power of a small rudder to steer a large ship. In this scripture about the power of our tongue, consider the power of prophetic intercession! In the Forerunner Commentary on this verse we read, “…rudders manipulate the course of immense ocean vessels with a slight movement of a pilot’s hand. Since it is underwater and aft, the rudder of a ship does its work UNSEEN. A passenger is ignorant of its movements most of the time. Yet, when it is in proper working order, the rudder holds more power over the ship than the wind. The wind will blow, toss, even destroy the ship’s rigging, but the rudder guides the ship exactly where it directs.”
This is God’s promise to the intercessors in this hour of national turbulence. Don’t stop praying! Your prayers have great power to turn the ship! Continue praying, interceding, and discerning the workings and movements of the Holy Spirit, being faithful to God’s commands. As we come together to declare God’s faithfulness, this nation will, once again, head in the direction that God intends. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Regardless of the winds of adversity and the fires of the enemy, God’s people have a power that cannot be matched. Let us join in faith and continue to pray and speak of God’s faithfulness in order to bring God’s people and this nation into the fullness of God’s plans. Note this additional encouragement from God’s word:
Colossians 2:15 – “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (ESV).
Psalm 33:8-11 – “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.”

PRAY FOR AMERICA: THANK GOD for His many blessings on America throughout it's history. May we then ask that AMERICA once again be a blessing TO GOD, by once again submitting to HIS will in our affairs - both personal and national - that He may truly "heal our land." (2 Chron. 7:14) Short of that, we should not be saying "God Bless America"but instead "God be merciful towards America!"
PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS 1) Pray for President Trump and his advisers, that they would select Godly leaders at the federal level who will be accountable to do an excellent job (or be fired!) ; that he would seek God's wisdom and be enabled to lead our country effectively in the years ahead; and 2) Pray our leaders at every level of government will Spirit-filled, leading us with Godly wisdom and integrity; that they will  only pass legislation and enact policies that will benefit Americans today as well as future generations and NOT do any lasting harm.
SUPREME COURT: PRAY that the justices will only hand down decisions that are Constitutionally sound and in the best interests of our country now and for future generations.

World-Wide Prayer Requests:

PRAISE GOD for the continuing recent successes against ISIS! P
ray that coalition forces will be able to  fully destroy the leadership and infrastructure of ISIS.
*For believers in Syria and in this region as they navigate so much uncertainty. May they remain faithful to God through these most difficult times as He sustains them with peace and His Spirit's strength.

STANDING STRONG THROUGH THE STORM - OpenDoorsUSA.org
At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.- 2 Tim. 4:16
SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO SUFFER
The Apostle Paul knew exactly what it was like to be alone, to be deserted by all who called themselves “brothers” and “sisters.” A former colleague who has done considerable travel among the persecuted says, “It is hard to believe that Christians are the largest persecuted group in the world today. But it is even more difficult to believe that this is so seldom mentioned in our gatherings and church services. More Christians know the names of their favorite actors than their fellow believers who are in prison.”
He continues, “With every trip something in my heart breaks as I hear the echoes of suffering:
I remember the echoes of an Egyptian mother as she shared how her young boy was stuck in a haystack because she refused to deny Jesus.
I remember the sounds of weeping as fellow students in Indonesia shared how Sariman, their co-student, was hacked to death.
I remember the cries of anguish as we walked from church to church that was burned to the ground on the island of Lombok.
I remember the tears of Rebecca in Iran as she showed the picture of her father who was stabbed to death for sharing the gospel.
I remember the voice of Pastor Daniel in Vietnam as he shared how he was chained to the ground for six months.
I remember the fear of Grace from Sudan as she shared how her church was attacked and her friend was shot through the head.
Oh, I remember the cries of Caleb in Eritrea as he shared with tears how two dear friends were executed in front of him because of their faith.
And I remember the tears of Joy in the southern Philippines as she shared how her fiancé was shot to death in their church in Mindanao.
But, most all, I remember the deafening sounds of silence every time I return home.
RESPONSE
How can I be silent today? How can I not speak on behalf of those who suffer? How can I desert those that belong to the same body that I belong to and who desperately need the encouragement of my interven
