#2627 (3/31) SUNDAY SPECIAL: "The Equality Act vs. Religious Freedom - Equality for Me, but not for Thee"

"THE EQUALITY ACT VS RELIGOUS FREEDOM - EQUALITY FOR ME, BUT NOT FOR THEE"- by John Stonestreet and David Carlson, Breakpoint.org, March 28, 2019; http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/03/breakpoint-the-equality-act-vs-religious-freedom/
In 2011, the Human Rights Campaign launched a video series that, according to HRC’s president, would “help drive the national conversation about same-sex marriage.” And it did just that. The series featured professional athletes, movie stars, politicians and civil rights leaders. And look where we are today.
Looking back, it’s clear that while opponents of same-sex marriage made much better arguments, the advocates changed the cultural imagination. Well on Monday, the HRC announced a new video campaign called “Americans for the Equality Act.” This time, Christians need to be prepared to respond.

According to Andrew Walker of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, “the Equality Act represents the most invasive threat to religious liberty ever proposed in America.” I agree—with the caveat that the Equality Act seemed virtually unpassable when it was first conceived all the way back in 1974. In fact, it seemed unpassable in 1984, 1994, 2004 and even 2014. But today, what seemed unthinkable seems quite possible.

Despite the name, backers of the Equality Act aren’t seeking a balance of LGBTQ rights with religious rights. As Andrew told me recently on the BreakPoint Podcast, the Equality Act “is a winner-take all solution. It takes the categories of gender identity and sexual orientation and elevates them to a protected class in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”
It would mean that in every area of public life—public accommodation, public education, and even Christian education—gender identity and sexual orientation would receive the highest level of federal protection. Even worse, the Equality Act specifically targets the Religious Freedom Restoration Act—a bill passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and signed by President Clinton. So in cases involving claims of discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation, religious rights would be tossed aside. The Barronelle Stutzmans and Jack Phillips of the world—or any Christian trying to live out their convictions in public life—wouldn’t stand a chance.
That means that religious conviction about sexual behavior or gender realities would immediately, as Andrew said on the podcast, be put “on the opposite side of federal law . . . Our viewpoints on marriage and sexuality and how we define male and female,” would be considered irrational. And that we hold them not with good will, but with animus. “The Equality Act,” Andrew continued, “effectively turns Billy Graham into Jim Crow.”

The new Human Rights Campaign videos, which will feature actress Sally Field, figure skater Adam Rippon, Jamie Lee Curtis, and a host of other celebrities, are designed to “drive the conversation” for the Equality Act. In fact, part of the campaign is to actively recruit “local sponsors” for the Equality Act.

To be as clear as I can, every single Christian needs to know how to talk about gender identity and sexual attraction in light of our larger rights to live out of our deepest convictions about God’s design for human sexuality and human flourishing.
The supporters of the Equality Act don’t want debate or discussion. The Equality Act is designed to effectively shut down debate about human sexuality, about gender, about same-sex attraction. That’s a national debate that we’ve actually never had. It will instead force an answer on Americans that self-determination in those areas is the same thing as race.

Also, I need to mention that some Christians are currently exploring legislative efforts to compromise with the Equality Act in order to gain protection for Christian institutions. But this would grant into law something that’s not true about our most fundamental identity as human beings—something that’s central for human flourishing. And such attempts might protect certain religious institutions, but would do so at the expenses of individual Christians in the public square. That’s not religious freedom.

Right now, the Equality Act has no chance of passing in this Congress. But elections matter: If just a few seats flip in the next election, we may very well get the Equality Act, unless we begin to act now.
Start by learning about the Equality Act. Come to BreakPoint.org, click on this commentary, and I’ll link you to an excellent article by Andrew Walker called “The Equality Act Accelerates Anti-Christian Bias.” Share it with your friends, with your clergy, with public officials. Link to it on Facebook. I’ll also link you to the podcast episode with Andrew Walker.

Christians were caught napping in 2011. The HRC and supporters of the Equality Act are counting on us to be asleep at our posts again. We can’t let that happen.

#2626 (3/30) PRO-LIFE SAT: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo: “We Will Not Subsidize the Killing of Unborn Babies”

------------------------------------------

SECRETARY OF STATE MIKE POMPEO: “WE WILL NOT SUBSIDIZE THE KILLING OF UNBORN BABIES”-Steven Ertlet, Mar 26, 2019| https://www.lifenews.com/2019/03/26/secretary-of-state-mike-pompeo-we-will-not-subsidize-the-killing-of-unborn-babies/
The following are remarks from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today announcing an expanded Mexico City Policy.

During his first week in office, President Donald Trump issued an executive order known as the Mexico City Policy or the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance Act that revoked taxpayer funding to the International Planned Parenthood abortion business.
Today, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Trump Administration announced a new enforcement mechanism designed to expand this executive order to the broadest extent possible. Pompeo announced that the U.S. State Department will refuse to work with any foreign non-governmental organization (NGO) engaged in the abortion business. The State Department will also refuse to fund foreign NGOs that give money to other foreign NGOs engaged in the international abortion industry.

Here are Pompeo’s full remarks:

"Good morning, everyone. Today I’m making two announcements about the State Department’s ongoing efforts to ensure that U.S. taxpayer dollars are not used to subsidize or promote abortions.
The first announcement concerns the so-called “Mexico City Policy.” This Reagan-era directive ensures U.S. taxpayer dollars aren’t used to support foreign nongovernmental organizations that perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning.
President Trump boldly expanded the Mexico City Policy in 2017. It now protects every human life impacted by the nearly $9 billion of foreign aid we spend on global health programs each year, and in turn protects more unborn babies around the world than ever before. This is decent; this is right. And I’m proud to serve in an administration that protects the least amongst us.
Now, two years into our administration, the vast majority of our implementing partners have agreed to comply with the policy, and they continue to work with us. This administration has shown that we can continue to meet our critical global health goals, including providing healthcare for women, while refusing to subsidize the killing of unborn babies.
As Secretary of State, I have directed our team to take all appropriate action to implement this policy to the broadest extent possible. Today I’m announcing further refinements to advance our efforts to protect the least amongst us.
As before, we will continue to refuse to provide assistance to foreign NGOs who perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning.
Now, as a result of my decision today, we are also making clear we will refuse to provide assistance to foreign NGOs that give financial support to other foreign groups in the global abortion industry. We will enforce a strict prohibition on backdoor funding schemes and end-runs around our policy. American taxpayer dollars will not be used to underwrite abortions.

This brings me to my second announcement. We are also fully enforcing federal law prohibiting the use of U.S. funds, including foreign assistance, to lobby for or against abortion, otherwise known as the Siljander Amendment.
In light of recent evidence of abortion-related advocacy by an organ of the Organization of American States, I directed my team to include a provision in foreign assistance agreements with the OAS that explicitly prohibits the use of funds to lobby for or against abortion. The institutions of the OAS should be focused on addressing crises in Cuba, Nicaragua, and in Venezuela, not on advancing the pro-abortion cause.
And to ensure that our message is heard loud and clear, we will reduce our contributions to the OAS. Our reduction equals the estimated U.S. share of possible OAS expenditures on these abortion-related activities.

The American people should rest assured that this administration – and this State Department, and our USAID – will do all we can to safeguard U.S. taxpayer dollars and protect and respect the sanctity of life for people all around the globe.

#2625 (3/29) "Speech Righter: Trump Tackles College Censorship"

"SPEECH RIGHTER: TRUMP TACKLES COLLEGE CENSORSHIP" - Tony Perkins, Washington Watch,
March 21, 2019; https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA19C44&f=WU19C13 [AS I SEE IT: The picture below looks much like a high school, not a college classroom. It serves to make me wonder how much of even subtle peer pressure keeps Christian students at that age to also refrain from voicing their opinions these days. - Stan]
Going to college is tough for any teenager. But for conservatives, it can be downright dangerous. These days, parents are sending their kids off to six-figure war zones, where even moderate speakers need armies of protection -- if they're allowed to speak at all. Christians brave enough to talk about their views are stigmatized if they're lucky, and physically attacked if they're not. We've wiped campuses clean of so many words, ideas, and values that an entire generation is leaving college completely unprepared for the cruel world from which higher education is "sparing" them.

Like a lot of parents, Donald Trump is fed up. College campuses are so toxically liberal today that conservatives have gotten everything from death threats to docked grades. We've watched Christians like Isabella Chow lose her student government sponsorship. Even a simple act like recruiting for a college club is an excuse to throw punches. That's not education -- it's state-sponsored hazing. And this administration has decided to do something about it.

Today [Mar. 21S  COLLE], the president had a warning for liberal incubators like Berkeley: shut down free speech and the government will shut down your federal funding. Under a new executive order, the penalties for schools censoring students will be, in Trump's words "very costly." "If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view - NO FEDERAL FUNDS?" the president tweeted. So far, no one has had the nerve to hit higher education where it hurts. But then, not everyone is President Trump.

Charlie Kirk, who heads the group Hayden Williams was attacked for promoting, thinks it's about time someone stepped in and stopped the First Amendment's death spiral on college campuses. But how, he wonders, will the liberal media take it? After all, they're "an ideologically homogeneous group, need to thread the needle of wanting to appear to be in favor of free speech while arguing that the president requiring free speech is somehow dangerous. That isn't easy..." After all, he points out:
"Burn an American flag on campus or stand on a bench and decry the Constitution as racist and you will be allowed to speak. Wear an American flag on your shirt or hand out copies of the Constitution and you will be accused of triggering and sent off to the campus equivalent of the broom closet, called 'Free Speech Zones,' in order to continue to express your thoughts."

And that intolerance has never cut both ways. Liberals used to care about the free exchange of ideas -- until theirs became impossible to defend. Now, they've decided they don't want to try to win the debate. They want to stop the debate from taking place. After years of policing speech and punishing speakers, the Left's brainwashing is paying off. Thirty-percent of college students think shouting down people like Ben Shapiro is acceptable. Another 10 percent said it was okay to use violence to stop students like Hayden. And where did these extremists-in-training learn how to bully conservatives? From their adult counterparts, of course. They're just mirroring what they've seen from the leaders of "get-up-in-their-face," "tell-them-they're-not-welcome," "we-kick-them" liberalism.

This new army of young radicals thinks they're on the "morally righteous side" in this culture war, Hayden says, "and in order to win, they must silence any form of dissent." Now, thanks to President Trump, that silence will hurt any college who encourages it. "For an industry that loves to preach against capitalism, they sure do love their money," Kirk points out. "This will hopefully start to get their attention. Unlike their students, if they don't like it, they are certainly free to speak out."

#2624 (3/28) "Senate Dems: A Little Green Around the Bills"

"SENATE DEMS: A LITTLE GREEN AROUND THE BILLS" -  Tony Perkins, Washington Watch, March 27, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190327/dems-green
--------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------
Who says politicians don't have a sense of humor? As if the Green New Deal weren't entertaining enough, yesterday's floor debate was better than a free night at the improv. Republicans, who've been begging for a chance to take on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-N.Y.) fruitcake climate bill, saved some of their best material for Tuesday, when Mike Lee (R-Utah) managed to make Sharknado seem like a more credible threat to America than global warming.

Lee's montage, which included everything from Ronald Reagan riding a velociraptor to Aquaman saddling a 20-foot seahorse, was his way, he said, of treating the proposal "with the seriousness it deserves." After all, he pointed out, this is a resolution that would eliminate air travel. "How are we supposed to get around the vast expanses of, say, Alaska during the winter?" he asked? "I'll tell you how -- tauntauns," he joked, pulling out a photo of Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. "Not only are tauntauns carbo neutral, but according to a report a long time ago and issued far, far away, they may even be fully recyclable."

"Let me be clear," Lee said, "climate change is no joke, but the Green New Deal is." So much so, conservatives pointed out, that when Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) brought the bill to the floor, not a single Democrat voted yes! After weeks of pumping Cortez's tires, the thought of actually supporting such a brainless proposal scared the party silly. Every Democrats but three voted "present" -- and then turned around and accused McConnell of being insincere! That's because even they know: riling up the base is one thing -- trying to win a general election by eliminating cows, airplanes, and children is quite another.

In reality, Democrats don't want the Green New Deal any more than they want to abolish ICE. Even if they do believe the climate hysteria, a plan that costs more than the entire recorded spending of the U.S. government since 1789 isn't a sincere solution. And for what? A "0.173°C difference by 2100." At $98 trillion dollars, we're talking about a $600,000 tab for every household. "The proposal we are talking about is, frankly, delusional," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "This is nonsense. And if you're going to sign on to nonsense, you ought to have to vote for nonsense."

Besides, McConnell argues, this debate isn't so much about the environment as it is about "a radical, top-down, socialist makeover of the entire U.S. economy." Remember, Frank Miele points out, only a handful of proposals in the Green New Deal even involves with global warming. It's just a fig leaf for their real agenda. "Free college? Check. Free home remodeling? Check. Massive federal investment in mass transit and other infrastructure? Check. Guarantee of high-paying jobs for everyone? Check. Free health care? Check. Free housing? Check." And how will we pay for it? "You just pay for it," Cortez shrugged. After all, it's "other people's money."

Meanwhile, the American people aren't fooled. They see the Left's unicorn-in-every-pot for exactly what it is. According to the Hill, when they polled more than 1,000 people, 67 percent of voters say they see the proposal as "largely socialist." And socialism isn't green, it isn't new, and it's certainly not a deal. Maybe that's why Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was so angry about having to defend it. "This is not a debate," he complained. "It's a diversion. It's a sham."

For once, we agree. At some point, the Democratic party will have to wake up and realize how many empty seats are on the bandwagon. Until then, they're going to have a tough climb. They still seem far too surprised, Charles Cook writes, that there's "still no great appetite in America for post-birth abortion, for the abolition of private health insurance, or for breezy anti-Semitism masquerading as authenticity, and that there is likely to be even less enthusiasm for rebuilding every structure in America, or for phasing out airplanes, or for destroying our current sources of energy while ruling out the only reliable alternatives."

This is what Democrats get for allowing themselves to be led around by the nose by a fanatical freshman who thinks animal flatulence is literally the end of the world. If the Left is going to let Cortez drive their policy to the outer reaches of rationality, then maybe it's a good thing the earth only has 12 more years. At least the Left won't have to spend more time defending its ridiculous agenda.

#2623 (3/27) "A New School of Thought on Students"

------------------------------------------

"A NEW SCHOOL OF THOUGHT ON STUDENTS" - Tony Perkins, Washington Watch, March 26, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190326/new-school
Most parents can't open a newspaper or log onto Facebook without reading an article about something horrifying unfolding in the public schools. In just a few days, social media was full of reports on everything from transgender story hour to LGBT carnivals that never required the parents' permission. There's the pornographic sex ed, the bathroom debate, or the genderless sports controversy. And what do they all have in common? They're all part of what most kids are hearing in today's public-school classroom.

It's really no wonder, then, that when you talk to pastors or other church leaders about the most negative influence on children today, 65 percent of protestants and 50 percent of Catholics say education. The Barna Group wasn't exactly surprised to poll spiritual leaders and see that only parents and peers had as much influence on this generation as the schools. But what does that mean for families? On Monday night's "Washington Watch," I talked with the group's Senior Vice President for Research, Brooke Hempell, to find out.

"Kids spend the majority of their waking hours in a school context. And... the time they spend in a church setting, is remarkably unbalanced. So we were trying to understand what pastors think about that and the nature of their recommendations to parents -- many of whom are really wrestling with, 'Where do I need to be educating my child if I want them to grow in their faith?'"

As we know from the culture today, a lot of what the public schools teach runs counter to what moms and dads are trying to instill at home. "[These spiritual leaders]," Brooke explains, "don't believe schools are necessarily responsible for spiritual formation, but they do have an impact ... There are certainly places where the teaching is very clearly focused on a secular worldview. And parents see this and know their kids are going to be learning something very different than what they hear at church."

But as much as this is an indictment of the liberal school system, it's also an opportunity for the church. Parents, Brooke points out, are really looking for more guidance. The world is changing rapidly, and moms and dads are "having to answer some difficult questions about scriptures and the reason for faith -- and [they're] not always equipped to have these conversations." A lot of church leaders make the mistake of thinking that they've address kids' needs by having Sunday school or a weekly youth group or Vacation Bible School. But the reality is, parents want their pastors and leaders to engage more directly in the spiritual formation of their kids. Maybe that means preaching on more timely moral issues or facilitating more conversations between parents and kids. Whatever it looks like, families are desperate for a more deliberate counter-balance to what their sons and daughters are getting from the culture.

"Just given the fast-changing nature of the world around us, parents are really hungry for equipping. And they know it has to be something different than what they had when they grew up, because we're operating in another context now. The questions their kids have are really different than the questions they had at the same age." In this day and age, I know some pastors are tempted to stay silent. They're worried about stepping on people's toes or creating controversy. But for the sake of the next generation, we need to encourage -- and take part in -- a more active community of church-led spiritual engagement. I don't know about you, but I don't want the public schools informing my teenagers' values!

#2622 (3/26) "America to Dems: Acquit While You're Ahead"

"AMERICA TO DEMS: ACQUIT WHILE YOU'RE AHEAD" - Tony Perkins, Washington Watch, March 25, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190325/acquit-ahead
-----------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
Wait for the evidence, the Left said. It's coming. Now, two years into this $50 million dollar campaign to derail the president and the conservative agenda of the voters who elected him, the big moment is here. Twenty-eight hundred subpoenas, 500 search warrants, 50 phone taps, 19 liberal attorneys, and 40 FBI agents into this expensive hoax, Special Counsel Robert Mueller agrees: there's absolutely no proof of collusion. At least on Donald Trump's part. The Democrats' conspiracy to destroy America, on the other hand, seems ongoing.

Americans won't get a do-over on the millions of resources the president's enemies have wasted -- or the dozens of priorities that could have taken this investigation's place. But the Russia probe has given the country one thing: a glimpse into just how far the other side will go to delegitimize the president. Even now, with their "gotcha moment" spoiled, Democrats don't seem the least bit interested in letting go. "We will accept the conclusions of the Mueller report," liberals had vowed. Now that there's no evidence? "It's a cover up."

The Federalist's Willis Krumholz could only shake his head. "The media and Democrat Party have dug themselves so deeply in a hole, they must keep on digging." While the American people beg the Left to move on, House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler seems intent on beating the dead collusion horse. "Maybe it's not indictable," he argued, "but we know there was collusion. The question is the degree," he insisted on Fox News Sunday. Surely they're kidding, former Congressman Jason Chaffetz fired back. "The team that Mueller put together -- these weren't friends of the president... [Y]ou had people from the Clinton camp on the team. If they were going to get him, they would have."

Yet already, Democrats are gearing up for another round of fatal and divisive investigations, wasting more taxpayer time and more taxpayer dollars. "The job of Congress," Nadler tried to justify, "is much broader than the job of the special counsel. The special counsel is looking and can only look for crimes. We have to protect the rule of law, we have to look for abuses of power, we have to look for obstructions of justice, we have to look for corruption in the exercise of power which may not be crimes."

For some reason, the Left seems to think that continuing this hoax makes them more electable. A full 64 percent of Americans would disagree, telling Rasmussen that if the Mueller report cleared the president of wrongdoing, then it's time to put the issue to bed. But, as Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) pointed out, that's tough to do when sabotaging the president is your only agenda. "For two years, Special Counsel Mueller conducted his investigation with every available Justice Department resource at his disposal, and today's principal conclusions assure every American there was no collusion between Russia and Donald Trump or his campaign." Now, he says, Democrats think they can "go into the Judiciary Committee or any other committee and have a limited budget, limited subpoena power, limited staff and go up against an investigation that lasted 22 months, had unlimited power, unlimited subpoena power, had plenty of investigators -- and they think they can find something more than what they did."

Good luck, pundits warn. Not only will Democrats alienate more Americans, they'll also be undermining any hopes they had for 2020. At the very least, this fiasco has exposed the liberal media for what it is: a coordinated Democratic smear operation. "Never has so little come of so many screaming chyrons," Rich Lowry declares. "Every mini-scooplet was played up like major news, and if you went on air and said that collusion was unlikely and we should wait for the evidence, you were often treated like you were in the tank for Trump. The last two years have been a disgrace, and no one should forget it." For the entire year of 2017, Krumholz agreed, "Anything that could damage Trump, no matter how outlandish, was published. Journalistic standards collapsed." And yet, Mollie Hemingway reminds everyone, the Washington Post and New York times won Pulitzers for their coverage of Trump's supposedly treasonous activity.

There will be no undoing the damage -- to America, to our elections system, to the media's credibility, and to the Left's façade of noble intentions. As the president himself said earlier today, a lot of people have been "badly hurt" by this witch hunt. "A lot of very [terrible] things happened for our country." But, in the end, "this was an illegal takedown that failed." Let's hope, as Rep. Collins does, that Chairman Nadler rethinks his "sprawling investigation" and gets back to doing the business of the American people.
