"Chart of the Week: Sequestration Cuts 2.4 Percent out of Total Spending", T. Elliot Gaiser, February 24, 2013; http://blog.heritage.org/2013/02/24/chart-of-the-week-sequestration-cuts-2-4-percent-out-of-total-spending/

Federal spending will explode from $3.6 trillion to $6 trillion over the next 10 years, but the much-maligned sequester will cut only 2.4 percent of this spending. Sequestration represents a relatively small cut in projected spending. So why are so many in Washington wringing their hands over a two-and-a-half percent reduction?

Because sequestration leaves the largest component of federal spending—entitlements—nearly untouched. Instead, it falls most heavily on national defense, with 50 percent of sequestration cuts impacting national security. Thirty-five percent would impact non-defense discretionary spending. Less than 15 percent would fall on mandatory spending, which consumes 62 percent of the federal budget.
Not one of these cuts will address the dominant underlying cause of growth in government spending: entitlements.

Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security together drain 44 percent of the budget each year—and their share of spending is growing. By midcentury, these programs and Obamacare together will gobble up all of America’s historical tax revenue, leaving everything else—defense, federal law enforcement, transportation, and veteran care, etc.—to be financed on federal borrowing. But sequestration fails to curb this growth in spending.

Tax increases are no solution. President Obama already grabbed $618 billion in tax increases. These tax hikes harmed opportunity for Americans by increasing taxes on investors and job creators, and yet the budget remains out of balance. Washington has a spending problem—not a revenue problem—and only spending cuts can put the budget on a path to balance.

Spending cuts from sequestration and more are necessary. Without them, Americans will suffer even more in the future as economic uncertainty undermines opportunity and as deficits become growth-reducing debt. The good news is that there are smart ways to cut spending to offset sequestration, and at least six bipartisan ways to reform entitlements. For example, as Heritage experts J. D. Foster and Alison Acosta Fraser write, Congress could:
  • Correct the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security;
  • Raise the Social Security eligibility age to match increases in longevity; and
  • Raise the Medicare eligibility age to match Social Security.
There are many ways to save money now, too. Congress could cut:
  • The Lifeline program. This program spent $2.2 billion to provide telephones and service to low-income individuals. As Heritage expert Patrick Louis Knudsen writes, “Remarkably, 41 percent of ‘customers’ receiving taxpayer-subsidized service from the top five carriers failed to verify their eligibility, according to the Federal Communications Commission.”
  • Community Development Block Grants. Many of the $3 billion in grants from this program go to economically well-off communities that don’t need them.
  • The Job Corps. According to Knudsen, this is $1.7 billion spent on “a demonstrably ineffective program that has failed to match many of its trainees with the jobs they were trained for.”
These are a few suggestions for how to reduce government spending now and correct the drivers in spending growth into the future. Ordinary citizens will see even more economic growth–reducing debt unless Congress reins in federal spending. Instead of panicking over the 2.4 percent cut that is sequestration, lawmakers should tackle entitlement reform and cut other spending to balance the budget in 10 years.

"....'The president needs to stop campaigning, stop trying to scare the American people, stop trying to scare states,' Louisiana's Gov. Bobby Jindal said. Jindal pointed to the president's 'insatiable appetite for new revenues.' '"Let's be clear. The federal budget will actually be larger even after these reductions than it was last year,' Jindal said. He said most Americans believe it's possible to cut 3 percent of the federal budget without losing critical services....Meanwhile, political observers say all the hand-wringing is similar to the partial government shutdown in the mid-1990s.Back then officials said old people would go hungry, illegal immigrants would have the run of the land, and veterans would go without drugs. None of those things happened."

"Obama Administration vs. the Law on Same-Sex Marriage"; by Amy Payne, February 25, 2013

President Obama has so many flip-flops in his policy positions that it’s hard to keep track. After running for President supporting traditional marriage, he “evolved” to support same-sex marriage—and now his Justice Department has officially urged the Supreme Court to overthrow the law of the land.

The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) defining marriage as one man and one woman for the purposes of federal law passed Congress with an overwhelming bipartisan majority and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996. It is the subject of a court challenge that the Supreme Court will hear on March 27. Last Friday, the Obama Justice Department filed a brief with the high court stating the Administration’s position that DOMA is unconstitutional.

Normally, it is the Justice Department’s job to enforce the nation’s laws. But as Heritage’s Hans von Spakovsky has noted, Obama’s Administration is different [1] "But now we have a Justice Department so politicized that it is actually arguing against federal statutes in court, and doing so not based upon the dictates of the law…but based on the apparent policy preferences and political ideology of this administration. So much for taking care that the laws be faithfully executed."

The Supreme Court will also hear arguments against Proposition 8, California’s state constitutional amendment defining marriage as one man and one woman, which was passed by popular vote of the citizens of that state. The March 26 arguments will come the day before the DOMA arguments. Several organizations, led by the National Organization for Marriage, are holding a March for Marriage [2] in Washington, D.C., on March 26.

John C. Eastman, a law professor and former Dean at Chapman University School of Law, wrote a Heritage Legal Memorandum [3] detailing the constitutional issues in these cases. He explains that the marriage challenges “implicate two bedrock constitutional concepts. First is whether the laws at issue prohibit the exercise of the fundamental right to marry in violation of the Due Process Clause. Second is whether they treat some people differently because of their sexual orientation in violation of the Equal Protection Clause.”
Eastman argues that the Constitution does not give an answer on marriage [3], and that: "The ultimate question before the Court, then, is whether the decision to embark on such an experiment is to be made by the people, either through their legislatures or directly by voter initiative, or whether the Constitution, which is silent on this precise question, must be interpreted to have already answered the question."

There has been a robust debate on this question for years. Citizens in 41 states have said over and over that marriage is between a man and a woman. The Supreme Court should allow the debate about marriage to continue and should let the people—not the courts—decide marriage policy.

Marriage exists to bring a man and a woman together as husband and wife to be father and mother to any children their union produces. Marriage policy is about much more than emotional intensity. The government isn’t in the business of affirming our loves. It leaves consenting adults free to live and love as they choose, as Heritage’s Ryan Anderson has written [4]:
"Contrary to what some say, there is no ban on same-sex marriage. Nothing about it is illegal. In all 50 states, two people of the same sex can choose to live together, choose to join a religious community that blesses their relationship, and choose a workplace offering them various joint benefits. Many liberal houses of worship and progressive businesses have voluntarily decided to do so. There’s nothing illegal about this. There’s no ban on it.
What’s at issue is whether the government will recognize such relationships as marriages—and then force every citizen and business to do so as well. At issue is whether policy will coerce and compel others to recognize and affirm same-sex relationships as marriages."
Rather than the desires of adults, marriage policy should be based on the needs of children—the product of this unique union of a man and woman. Chuck Donovan, president of the Susan B. Anthony List Education Fund, previously wrote [5] for Heritage:
"What is at stake is the whole task of society to ensure that as many children as possible are raised [6] by their mothers and fathers. The consequences of failure are staggering, and the contemporary United States, like so many other Western nations, is seeing those consequences [7] firsthand. The effects of broken families are statistically significant across category after category—youth crime [8], child poverty, [9] educational attainment [10], and adult mental health [11] in the next generation. For taxpayers, the costs of family dissolution and, increasingly, the failure of families to form are distressingly high [12] and growing. It would be irrational not to privilege marriage for the sake of these concerns."
Redefining marriage would put a new principle into law—that marriage is whatever emotional bond the government says it is. The confusion resulting from further delinking childbearing from marriage would force the state to intervene more often in family life. Rather than redefining marriage, we should be striving to restore a culture of marriage—fundamental to civil society and limited government.

"Pastor Saeed Writes of 'Psychological Warfare,' 'Physical Violence,' and 'Death Threats' in Iranian Prison," Feb. 22, 2013  http://aclj.org/iran/pastor-saeed-writes-psychological-warfare-physical-violence-death-threats-iranian-prison

[AS I SEE IT: The following letter from Pastor Saeed is so inspiriting, it reads so much like a letter one of the apostles would have written from jail in the book of Acts, that I've decided to just post the text below. What strikes me in particular is not just how he witnesses for Christ in the midst of the harsh condition he is facing, but that he also speaks to the needs of the rest of the body of Christ! Put in the context of what brothers and sisters in record numbers like Pastor Saeed around the world are enduring every day, our own problems seem insignificant and our hesitation to preach the gospel shameful . May each believer in Christ be such a faithful disciple in whatever circumstances/challenges God brings into our lives! - Stan]

''My Dear Friends,

The conditions here get so very difficult that my eyes get blurry, my body does not have the strength to walk, and my steps become very weak and shaky.

Various (bullying) groups, the psychological warfare, a year of not seeing my family, physical violence, actions committed to humiliate me, insults, being mocked, being confronted with extremists in the prison who create another prison within the prison walls, and the death threats…

It is interesting that because I am a Christian pastor, I am carefully watched. I am expected to smile at them despite what is being done and to understand why they are doing all of these things. But, of course, I can clearly see what is going on and because I want to serve God, I see all of these difficulties as golden opportunities and great doors to serve. There are empty containers who are thirsty for a taste of the Living Water and we can quench their thirst by giving them Jesus Christ. Maybe you are also in such a situation, so pray and seek God that He would use you and direct you in the pressures and difficulties of your lives.

There are those who are enemies of the Living Bible and do not want to hear. They are trying to put me under such horrific pressures (that are sometimes unbearable) so that they can show me that my faith is empty and not real. And after all of these pressures, after all of the nails they have pressed against my hands and feet, they are only waiting for one thing…for me to deny Christ. But they will never get this from me. This is why the Bible is Truth and they are in the way of destruction.

There is another group who does not know the Gospel of Truth. Instead of truly listening and meditating on God’s Word, they are just waiting to see how I react to all of their pressures and persecution. What will come out of me during these intense times? But again, this is another golden opportunity for me to shine the light of Christ in this dark world and to let God to use me.

Yesterday when I was singing worship songs, the head of my cell room attacked me in order to stop me from praising but in response I hugged him and showed him love. He was shocked.

It is during these harsh conditions, that I deeply need God’s Saving Grace so that I can be the fragrant scent of Christ in the dark house of Evin prison. I have often seen the Shining Morning Star in the darkness of this prison and I have seen His amazing and supernatural works. Oh, how beautiful is seeing the light of the Shining Morning Star of Christ in such evil darkness.
So:
  • See your golden opportunities in pressures and difficulties.
  • See the Shining Morning Star in the dark times of your life.
I Love Him! He is Gracious, Merciful, and Righteous to me. I now know that I have not been forgotten and that we are together in this path. God gives me Grace.

This is my message for the Church: Stay Strong for His Glory. He will come back soon! Be with God and give your best efforts for His kingdom."

- Pastor Saeed, servant of Jesus Christ in chains for endurance of Gospel. I love you all.

"Oscar Night/lLight A Candle for Hollywood " -- by Stan;   Feb. 24, 2013 - You've probably heard that tonight they're holding the annual Academy Awards ceremony. Maybe, like me, you are just so disgusted with what Holllywood promotes that you are inclined to just ignore it. Now, I'm not saying you should or shouldn't watch the broadcast tonight. But I am challenging you to think about the powerful role media executives/leaders, filmakers, TV producers, actors, and musicians have in not just American but the global culture. They, more than our laws, set the tone of the moral climate of our country and they should not be ignored.

Instead, we have been called by Jesus to be light and salt in our fallen world. (Matthew 5:13-16). And part of that calling is to interceede on behalf of those who are often without Christ. It is to invite God to invade their life with His truth. Most are slaves to selfish ambition and consumed with a desire for wealth, fame, and power to where they become arrogant and shut God out of their lives. Too many crash on the rocks of divorce, drug abuse, and even suicide. They deserve not our envy or anger but our love through intercession.

One ministry that has helped me with this has been "Mastermedia International"(info@mastermedia.org)  For a number of years, they have provided me with a daily prayer guide for those they've identified as media leaders and cultural influencers (certain TV programs, actors/actresses, musicians, etc.)  My source for doing so is their Media Prayer Calender.
Online Media Leader Prayer Calender - http://www.mastermediaintl.org/calendar/

With it. each day, I can pray for a media leader or a cultural influencer. Some examples of those considered Media Leaders are: (those with * are identified as one of the top 50 media leaders)

-  * David Zaslav (Pres. & CEO Discovery Comm. (Discovery Network, 1.7 BILLION subscribers)
-Haim Saban (Chair & CEO Saban Capital Group (owns Univsiion Communications - top Spanish language network)
- Dana Walden & Gary Newman (Co-Chair, 20th Century Fox (Modern Family, Glee)
- Sergey Brin/Larry Page (Co-Founders & CEO, Google - own YouTube)
- * "Steve Burke (Exec VP Comcast - #1 cable provider & Pres/CEO NBC Universal)
- * Philip Anschutz (Owns Regal Entertainment - #1 theatre group, Anschutz Film Group, etc.); Mike Campbell/Amy Miles (Chair/CEO Regal Entertainment),
- Ed Catmull (Pres Walt Disney & Pixar Animatioin Studios - Toy Story 1-3, Wall-E, etc.)
- * Frank A. Bennack Jr. (CEO Hearst Corp. - 235 magazines, 29 TV stations, 15 papers)
- Jeff Bezos (Founder & CEO - ie, owner - Amazon.com, top internet site)
- * Paul Allen (Co-founder of Microsoft, owns #$ cable co.(Charter) and other media

Cultural Influencers they identify will include names you will recognize and some you may not:, Such as:

[AS I SEE IT: While Monday was the "official" President's Day, as I posted an item for President Lincoln's birthday on the 12th, I here post an item about President Washington on what would have been his 281st birthday (born 1732). Many today would point to Lincoln as our greatest President. But I believe he WAS great for his time but Washington was not just great for his but was indispensible for so many aspects of our nation even existing and being as strong and free as it is. I believe he wasn't just 'great," but he was our MVP President. My hope that some movie producer would do a movie focusing on even just one aspect of Washington's life, but unlike the recent movie "Lincoln" basing it on historical accauracy more, esp. the role of Washington's faith. Something to pray about. - Stan]

"George Washington’s Example on Religious Liberty," ,by Julia Shaw On February 18, 2013
Instead of celebrating George Washington’s birthday, today we’ve lumped him in together with no-names including Millard Fillmore and William Henry Harrison as we celebrate a generic “Presidents’ Day.”
But George Washington was not simply a President. He was the indispensible man of the American Founding [1]. Washington’s words, thoughts, and deeds as a military commander, a President, and a patriotic leader make him arguably the greatest statesman in our history.

All Presidents can learn from Washington’s leadership in foreign policy, in upholding the rule of law, and—especially now—in the importance of religion and religious liberty. While the Obama Administration claims to be “accommodating” Americans’ religious freedom concerns regarding the Health and Human Services (HHS) Obamacare mandate, it is actually trampling religious freedom. President Washington set a tremendous example for the way that Presidents should handle such conflicts.

Washington knew that religion and morality are essential [2] to creating the conditions for decent politics. “Where,” Washington asked, “is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice?”
Religion and morality are, Washington wrote, essential to the happiness of mankind: “A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity.”

To match his high praise of religion, Washington had a robust understanding of religious liberty. Freedom allows religion, in the form of morality and through the teachings of religion, to exercise an unprecedented influence over private and public opinion. Religious liberty shapes mores, cultivates virtues, and provides an independent source of moral reasoning and authority. In his letter [3] to the Newport Hebrew congregation—at the time the largest community of Jewish families in America—President Washington grounded America’s religious and civil liberties in natural rights, and not mere toleration.Washington also confronted the limits of religious liberty. In one letter, Washington praised [4] the Quakers for being good citizens but chastised their pacifism: “Your principles and conduct are well known to me; and it is doing the people called Quakers no more than justice to say, that (except their declining to share with others the burden of the common defense) there is no denomination among us, who are more exemplary and useful citizens.” Yet Washington ended his letter assuring them of his “wish and desire that the laws may always be as extensively accommodated” to their practice.

Such a true accommodation upholds the rule of law and religious liberty, because it allows men and women of religious faith to follow the law and their faith. In his letter to the Quakers, Washington explained that government is instituted to “protect the persons and consciences of men from oppression.” Further, it was the duty of rulers “not only to abstain from [oppression] themselves, but, according to their stations, to prevent it in others.”

Washington’s advice has gone unheeded. We are told that religion and politics require a strict separation; that religion is a hindrance to happiness and therefore has been gradually stripped from the public square. We’re told that displays of religious faith don’t support the community but are downright offensive to non-adherents. The Supreme Court has supported and extenuated this tortured logic [5]. Since the 1940s, the Court has put religion and religious liberty into a smaller and smaller box. At best, religion is a private good [6]—but one that and should not be presented to others. And religious beliefs have no bearing on public life.

We can see where this logic goes [7]. Under Obamacare all insurance plans must cover, at no cost to the insured, abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, sterilization, and patient education and counseling for women of reproductive age. Illustrating the Obama Administration’s narrow view of religion, only formal houses of worship are afforded an exemption from the coercive mandate. Many other religious employers such as Catholic hospitals, Christian schools, and faith-based pregnancy care centers are forced to provide and pay for coverage of services that, as a matter of faith, they find morally objectionable.

Even the recently proposed “accommodation” to the rule isn’t really an accommodation. As Sarah Torre explains [8], the suggested fix “fails to encompass many employers—and certainly all individuals—with moral or religious objections to complying with the mandate.” To comply with the mandate requires religious men and women to violate church doctrine and their consciences. Under President Obama, we have returned to religious toleration, as defined by a bureaucrat somewhere.

Maybe that’s why we shouldn’t celebrate all Presidents equally. George Washington “was the directing spirit without which there would have been no independence, no Union, no Constitution, and no Republic [9],” as one President put it. He set the tone for what the American presidency should be. That’s why he was “first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”
