#2445 (9/30) SUNDAY SPECIAL:"Kavanaugh, Ford, and Everyone Else - No Mere Mortals"

"KAVANAUGH, FORD, AND EVERYONE ELSE - NO MERE MORTALS" - by John Stonestreet and David Carlson, Breakpoint.org, Sept 28, 2018; http://www.breakpoint.org/2018/09/kavanaugh-ford-and-everyone-else/
I think the most important thing that we can know about the drama played out [on Thursday] in Washington, D.C. is that it featured immortals.

Did Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assault Dr. Christie Blasey Ford some 35 years ago in Maryland? We still don’t know.
If Kavanaugh did what he is accused of, he certainly should not serve on the United States Supreme Court, not only due to the disqualifying seriousness of sexual assault but because he flatly denied doing it. Lying would itself be enough to dismiss his nomination.
And if he did not do what he is accused of, then this whole episode is the grossest abuse of the political process I’ve ever seen. False accusations are a savage abuse of a human being.

Thursday’s hearing was built up by media pundits as being “historic.” I don’t think that’s true, but it was certainly brutal to watch. My summary of what we learned is—not much. To be more specific . . .
First, Dr. Blasey Ford came across believable and credible in her testimony, but then confused and unclear when answering questions by hired prosecutor Rachel Mitchell. And Brett Kavanaugh came across as impassioned and sincere in defending his innocence.
Second, the format of the hearing—five minutes of questioning by Mitchell followed by five minutes of grandstanding and praise—is not an effective way to get to the facts.
Third, there remains a real lack of any evidence that Kavanaugh actually assaulted Dr. Ford. There’s certainly not enough evidence to convict him of a crime, but as was often said, this wasn’t a trial. [It sure felt like one. - Stan]
Fourth, the media coverage of this whole saga was despicable.
But finally, and I think most importantly, I found it incredibly discouraging to see, across social media and elsewhere, how those who were still asking for evidence were called hacks and heartless, while those moved by Dr. Ford’s testimony were called liberals or pro-abortion or worse—often by friends, even brothers and sisters in Christ.

Throughout this entire confirmation process I’ve been thinking of C.S. Lewis’ magnificent sermon, “The Weight of Glory,” especially this part:
“… it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations – these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit….”

Or to put it another way, every human being is made in the image of God, made for eternity. Our causes, our ideologies, our governments—they aren’t eternal. That’s why it is always morally hideous whenever anyone is sacrificed on the altar of a political ideology, for a political party, or for power and control. People are ends; they are never means.

It is not treating a human being as if they are in God’s image to sit on damaging information about their character until a day before a confirmation vote, only to trot it out to the nation for a political convenience.

It is not treating a human being as if they are in God’s image to go on national TV and proclaim the accused guilty, before talking to the accused or the accuser, and in the absence of any evidence.

It’s not treating a human being as if they’re in God’s image to suggest that even if sexual abuse happened, it doesn’t matter because the accused was young or too much time has passed, or that boys will be boys.

Our politics has become so dehumanizing, cynical, and degraded that we may never know any more about these allegations than we do right now. And so, in this context, as broken as it is, here’s what Christians can do. First, we can pray that God would allow the truth to come out. Second, we can pray that the victims of this gross episode in our history would be healed, and that ultimately God would use His church to heal the nation.
But finally, Christians have to commit to never sacrifice a human person—ever—on the altar of political ideology. Not even if they’re judicial nominees or political opponents.

#2444 (9/29) PRO-LIFE SAT: "Planned Parenthood Launches Six-Figure Ad Campaign Trashing Brett Kavanaugh:'Right to Abortion at Stake'”

"PLANNED PARENTHOOD LAUNCHES [EIGHT]FIGURE AD CAMPAIGN -TRASHING BRETT KAVANAUGH:
"RIGHT TO ABORTION AT STAKE"- Micaiah Bilger; AUG 8, 2018|http://www.lifenews.com/2018/08/08/planned-parenthood-launches-six-figure-ad-campaign-trashing-brett-kavanaugh-right-to-abortion-at-stake/ [AS I SEE IT: First of all, note that this ad campaign by Planned Parenthood was launched almost 2 months ago. That over 1/2 billion dollars of American tax money has gone towards this effort to continue the killing of unborn babies must end! How about putting those dollars to use truly helping women in crisis pregnancies without murdering their children and bringing untold harm to the women themselves! - Stan]
For a group that claims to serve low-income patients, Planned Parenthood certainly spends a lot of money on politics.

In addition to a $30 million mid-term election budget, the abortion chain plans to spend six figures on ads trashing President Donald Trump’s nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, The Hill reports. On [August 8], Planned Parenthood announced the ad buy, targeting several swing-vote U.S. senators who could make or break Kavanaugh’s confirmation. “The constitutional right to have an abortion is at stake. Our ability to get health care and to live free of discrimination is at stake,” said Carmen Berkley, managing director of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, in a statement.

Pro-abortion TV ads will run in Maine and Alaska, and a digital ad will run nationwide, according to the report. The two states are particular targets because their senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, are pro-abortion Republicans. With such a closely divided U.S. Senate, they and several moderately pro-life Democrats are critical to Kavanaugh’s confirmation. The ads will run as part of a multi-group #DearSenators campaign to persuade the U.S. Senate to block Kavanaugh’s confirmation, according to the Washington Examiner. The ads and other campaign efforts will feature patients’ personal stories about abortions prior to Roe v. Wade and other issues.

Here’s more from the report:
The campaign, called #dearsenators, hopes to use personal stories from constituents on how Kavanaugh could affect their lives if he is confirmed to the Supreme Court. It is the latest campaign from progressive groups who view Kavanaugh as a threat to abortion rights and Obamacare. The campaign has a website, dearsenators.org, that features voice recordings of patient stories and a way for supporters to send their own voicemail to senators.
Other pro-abortion groups involved in the effort include the National Women’s Law Center, Center for American Progress Action Fund, Stand Up for America and Advocates for Youth.

National pro-life leaders have expressed high hopes for Kavanaugh and the future of unborn babies’ rights. A federal judge, Kavanaugh has served on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for D.C. for more than a decade, where he developed an extensive record of protecting religious liberty and enforcing restrictions on abortion. Pro-life leaders believe he would do the same on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said they will vote on his confirmation prior to the midterm elections.

Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion business in America, aborting approximately 320,000 unborn babies every year. Its most recent annual report showed a record income of $1.46 billion, with about half a billion dollars coming from taxpayers.

Two years ago, Planned Parenthood spent more than $38 million to back Hillary Clinton and other pro-abortion candidates in 2016.

#2443 (9/28) "Kavanaugh at the Tip of the Smear"

"KAVANAUGH AT THE TIP OF THE SMEAR" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, Sept 27, 2018; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20180927/kavanaugh-tip-smear [AS I SEE IT: This article is a great summary of what millions witnessed in the Senate hearings yesterday. As powerful and touching as the accuser's words were, I kept thinking, "But where is the corroboration of what she is saying? Since Judge Kavanaugh was obviously being tried - in the court of public opinion, anyway - what evidence was actually brought except for the accuser's memory? Are all us older American males to forever be subject to whatever memories someone had of what we supposedly did decades ago? (Are all men to always be fearful of being unjustly accused of some past actions? ) And yet, through it all, the media hardly mentioned later what Judge Kavanaugh said about his 10-year old daughter asking that they pray for "the woman." Through all of this, certainly both accuser and the accused (and his family) have been forever hurt (though we may never know who actually abused Dr. Ford) and deserve our continued prayers. As someone has also said, the fact that the Judge has a young daughter with such wisdom says much of them and  values he and his wife have instilled in their children. - Stan
----------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
Appearing before the U.S. Senate, Brett Kavanaugh was supposed to be a judge -- not a defendant. Now, after three of the worst weeks of his life, he and his family are finding out that the path to a Supreme Court appointment is a costly one. And while it may be the pinnacle of his profession, getting there exacts a price no American should have to pay.

In his opening statement Judge Kavanaugh said “the confirmation process has become a national disgrace.” Beyond the destruction and pain it’s caused his family, he lamented the impact that this vicious attempt to block his nomination would have on the entire nation. “You sowed the wind. For decades to come, I fear that the whole country will reap the whirlwind.”

He concluded his lengthy remarks with “My family and I intend no ill will toward Dr. Ford or her family, but I swear today under oath before the Senate and the nation, before my family and God, I am innocent of this charge.”

It was difficult not to be moved by the earlier testimony of Dr. Ford, which was shaky at times and halted by tears. No one could deny just how emotional she seemed during her testimony. But most conservatives are not suggesting that she was never assaulted. There are just too many inconsistencies in the story -- and in the Democrats’ handling of it -- to suggest that Kavanaugh was the one responsible. As Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) pointed out, today’s testimony only “repeat[ed] what we already knew, which is she believes something happened. She believes it was Brett Kavanaugh but everybody she claims was in the house denies having any knowledge of it. There is no corroboration.” He’s right. None of the boys at the party remember it happening. Even Dr. Ford’s friend, Leland Ingham, denies it. In the 36 years since that night, this is the first time anyone (apart from Dr. Ford’s therapist) has even heard of it.

That doesn’t mean Dr. Ford wasn’t attacked. Republicans just talked to a man this week “who believes he, not Judge Kavanaugh, had the encounter with Dr. Ford in 1982 that is the basis of [the] complaint.” And while Christine insists that with complete certainty that Kavanaugh was responsible, even cognitive scientists have learned that “people can be 100 percent certain of their memories… and 100 percent wrong.”

The crime of sexual abuse is real and life-altering, but it does beg the question: how far back and in how much detail do we look at any nominee? Because, as former Assistant United States Attorney Sidney Powell reminded everyone on last night’s “Washington Watch,” “there but for the grace of God goes one of us. I mean, who has not made a mistake at some point in their lives? … I don’t think we should judge people by erroneous acts in high school and college. That’s why we prosecute people as juveniles and seal the record. Their brains aren’t even fully formed.”
Obviously, no one is excusing this kind of behavior, but it’s a legitimate point. How far back do we go? Junior high? Elementary school? Daycare? At what point do we realize that people grow up, make mistakes, and move forward? As far as Brett Kavanaugh is concerned, there’s been nothing to suggest in his past confirmation hearings that he’s ever mistreated women. And that’s after six FBI background checks. As Sidney explains, “They literally go back to the area in which you were born and canvass neighbors. I’ve been through FBI background checks when I was a federal prosecutors for 10 years… I mean, the neighbors in my home and elementary neighborhoods were asked about me and my character. So it’s absolutely astonishing that not a peep of any of this came up until right now.”
“On top of that, Dianne Feinstein has done a gross disservice to absolutely everybody involved, including her fellow citizens and Dr. Ford, by sitting on this until the last minute. Because if they really wanted an investigation and this were really about getting to the truth, they would’ve raised it from the get-go and had it investigated quietly before anyone’s name was dragged through the mud -- including Dr. Ford’s.”

As Andrew McCarthy points out, it isn’t the Senate’s job to solve crimes. It’s not to psychoanalyze witnesses. It’s to advise and consent on the president’s nomination. And if it were a trial, he pretends? The case is so weak, it would be “thrown out of court.”

What we do know without a shadow of a doubt is this: the Left must have the court in order to advance their agenda in America. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) admitted it. They couldn’t get Congress or state legislatures to redefine marriage or impose abortion on demand. They had to go to the courts. They can’t get open borders in this country. They have to go to the courts. That’s what this entire smear campaign is about. This is not -- and never has been -- about Brett Kavanaugh. It’s about the shift that will begin to take place when a committed constitutionalist replaces Kennedy.

#2442 (9/27) "Belief Now Outweighs Truth in the Kavanaugh Hearings"

"BELIEF NOW OUTWEIGHS TRUTH IN THE KAVANAUGH HEARINGS"  Jonah Goldberg: Sep 26, 2018;
https://townhall.com/columnists/jonahgoldberg/2018/09/26/belief-now-outweighs-truth-in-the-kavanaugh-hearings-n2522426
--------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This has become grotesque.

President Trump loves to yell "witch hunt!" at the Russian collusion investigation, but even if he is cleared of all wrongdoing, "witch hunt" is the wrong term. Special counsel Robert Mueller is looking for actual evidence that can withstand scrutiny in a court of law.

Real witch hunts aren't about evidence but rather belief. Inconvenient facts are discarded, and the convenient ones are larded with innuendo and rumor and thrown at the feet of the accused like so much kindling for the auto-da-fe.

Before The New Yorker published an article in which another woman, Deborah Ramirez, conjures a memory of Brett Kavanaugh, this time about him exposing himself, the party line from Democrats and much of the media was that anyone who accuses a man of sexual assault must be assumed to be telling the truth.

Kavanaugh's first accuser is Christine Blasey Ford, who says Kavanaugh tried to rape her 36 years ago in a house she cannot identify, at a time she cannot specify, at a party none of her named witnesses can corroborate. Even the dear friend Ford said was present, Leland Keyser, says she never knew Kavanaugh and does not remember attending the party. She does say she believes Ford though.

And belief is all that matters.
"We believe Dr. Ford," Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) said, speaking for many colleagues who've made similar declarations of faith.
"The truth is, I believe her," said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). "She has a credible allegation against Judge Kavanaugh."

OK, but credible means "believable," not "true."

Au contraire, cry the witch-hunters.
"The existence of credible allegations against Judge Kavanaugh should be disqualifying," writes law professor Kate Shaw in the New York Times. "If members of the Senate conclude that a credible accusation of sexual misconduct has been made against Judge Kavanaugh, that should be enough to disqualify him."

But even credibility requires more than simply saying the right words or incanting the required shibboleths.
"Look, if someone says, 'My car got stolen,' you don't presume they're lying," Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "But if someone says, 'I was sexually abused,' people today sometimes presume that they're making it up."

This is misleading on many levels.

First, the only senator on the Judiciary Committee to dismiss Ford's claim was Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who sat on it for weeks until it was ripe enough to weaponize. The Republicans instantly offered to give Ford a hearing, in private or in public or even in California.
Second, we don't presume the person whose car is stolen is lying. But we do presume the individual accused of stealing it is innocent until evidence says otherwise.

But when proof is subordinated to mere belief, the standard for evidence is reduced to whatever bolsters the belief. That's why Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) could say with a straight face on CNN that she believes Judge Kavanaugh attempted rape 36 years ago because of the way he decides cases. Countless others have imputed guilt to Kavanaugh because other men "like him" have done bad things. Journalist Frank Rich tweeted, "Kavanaugh's bragging about coaching girls' basketball is troubling in retrospect."

This is the kind of hysteria that drove The New Yorker to "report" that Kavanaugh exposed himself at a party the authors cannot even confirm he attended. (Nor could other news outlets that declined to publish the allegation.)
The accuser, who had never mentioned the story until Kavanaugh was nominated, came forward only after Democratic operatives contacted her, but she "was reluctant to characterize Kavanaugh's role in the alleged incident with certainty." When she asked her friends about the events in question, no one could corroborate it. So, she spent six days "assessing her memories" and decided it must have happened. The only "corroboration" offered is from an anonymous "witness" who wasn't there, but claims to remember someone else saying it happened. In other words: a rumor.

Make no mistake, there are witches out there (or, more accurately, warlocks). We know men have done horrific things. We know that coming forward is difficult for victims, and that they should be treated respectfully. But as G.K. Chesterton observed: "It is one thing to believe in witches, and quite another to believe in witch-smellers."

Wanting evidence from a specific accuser is not a "threat to democracy," as Feinstein claims. It's essential to it. And merely believing otherwise doesn't change that fact.

#2441 (9/26) "Should We Unhitch from the Ten Commandments? - Nope!"

"SHOULD WE UNHITCH FROM THE TEN COMMANDMENTS? - NOPE!" - - by John Stonestreet and G. Shane Morris; Breakpoint.org, Sept 26, 2018;http://www.breakpoint.org/2018/09/breakpoint-should-we-unhitch-from-the-ten-commandments/ [AS I SEE IT: It greatly concerns me that pastors who are known to preach the Word of God accurately suddenly promote ideas such as Pastor Stanley and many others have. Are they simply trying to make the Scriptures more "current" and therefore "more relevant" but in the end detract from Biblical traditions that need to be upheld, traditions that Jesus himself upheld. Believers need to be discerning when hearing such ideas and speak up when our leaders promote questionable teachings. - Stan]
Is all the Bible relevant to a Christian worldview? One well-known pastor recently suggested it isn’t. But I beg to differ.

What’s the only passage in Scripture personally written down by God? If you answered “the Ten Commandments,” you’re right on the money. Exodus tells us that God audibly spoke these laws at Mount Sinai and inscribed them on tablets of stone with His own finger.

Of course, that’s not the only reason the Ten Commandments have a central place in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Christians have long understood them to be the clearest expression of God’s eternal moral character. Not to mention, they played an instrumental role in shaping Western civilization, including forming the foundation of our legal system and our understanding of justice. It’s why Moses and those tablets can be found at the apex of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Recently in Relevant Magazine, Georgia pastor Andy Stanley argued that we shouldn’t build monuments to the Ten Commandments in churches or courthouses because these rules are “from the old covenant.” The article was a follow-up, in a sense, to something that Pastor Stanley said back in May when he advised his congregation to “unhitch” their faith from the Old Testament. In this latest article, Stanley writes that “Jesus’ death and resurrection signaled the end” of God’s old covenant with Israel and its regulations, “including the big ten.”
Now, Stanley argues, Jesus’ “new commandment” to “love one another,” which is found in John 13:34, should replace the Ten Commandments. If Christians obey the new commandment, he says, we “are not required to obey any of the commandments found in the first part of [our] Bibles.”

I think Stanley is wrong on this, very wrong in fact. But to be clear, it’s not personal. I’ve appreciated much of his ministry over the years. I’m not trying to single him out. I’ve heard many evangelicals suggest, in one way or another at various levels of theological sophistication, that the Old Testament just isn’t relevant to us any longer because all of that was done away with by Christ. This is a tragic misreading of the Scriptures.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told his listeners, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law and the Prophets…but to fulfill them.” And in Matthew 22, He says the commands to “love the Lord your God” and “love your neighbor as yourself”—quoting from Leviticus and Deuteronomy—summarize, not replace, the law and prophets. In other words, Christ’s command that we love one another isn’t an alternative to the Ten Commandments. It restates them in simpler terms.

The moral principles expressed in the Ten Commandments didn’t come into existence at Sinai. They’re part of God’s eternal character which He built into the very fabric of reality itself. Even more, Jesus relied on the Old Testament throughout His ministry and in His teaching, especially when making the moral case for something. The reason, from a Christian worldview, is clear: Whether we’re talking about the moral principles expressed in the Ten Commandments which Christ perfectly kept or the ceremonial regulations of Leviticus which foreshadowed our perfect High Priest, all of the Old Testament is relevant to Christianity.

Jesus affirmed the God of the Old Testament is our God still, that the Creator of the world and the giver of the law is our loving Father who is both just and the justifier of the ungodly. And who promised to write His law a second time—not on tablets of stone, but as Hebrews says, on our hearts and minds.

So with all respect to Pastor Stanley, if we’re going to “unhitch our faith” from anything at all, it should be the notion that any part of Scripture is irrelevant to us.

And speaking of the relevance of Scripture, I’m thrilled that this month we’re offering my friend, Dr. Bruce Ashford’s book, “Letter to an American Christian.” He demonstrates how the Scripture has ultimate relevance, from the Old Testament to the New Testament, in dealing with what it means to be a citizen. So come to BreakPoint.org for this featured resource.

“INTERCESSORS ARE THE RUDDER” – A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT - Wanda Alger, June 28th, 2017; https://www.getamericapraying.com/blog/
I was recently given a word by my good friend, Bill Yount. His word greatly encouraged me as an intercessor. Working for Intercessors for America, I soon realized it was not just a word for me, but for all who have been praying for our nation, wondering if their prayers are truly making any difference. Bill told me, “I kept seeing you as a small rudder on a huge ship. Hidden, but giving guidance. Although it seemed slow it was turning the whole ship. Patience was needed to see the impact of your…ministry. I sense the Lord saying, ‘Don’t jump ship! I’ve made you the rudder!’ ” I was immediately touched in my spirit by this encouragement, knowing that our seemingly small place in prayer was having a great impact.
James 3:4 talks about the power of a small rudder to steer a large ship. In this scripture about the power of our tongue, consider the power of prophetic intercession! In the Forerunner Commentary on this verse we read, “…rudders manipulate the course of immense ocean vessels with a slight movement of a pilot’s hand. Since it is underwater and aft, the rudder of a ship does its work UNSEEN. A passenger is ignorant of its movements most of the time. Yet, when it is in proper working order, the rudder holds more power over the ship than the wind. The wind will blow, toss, even destroy the ship’s rigging, but the rudder guides the ship exactly where it directs.”
This is God’s promise to the intercessors in this hour of national turbulence. Don’t stop praying! Your prayers have great power to turn the ship! Continue praying, interceding, and discerning the workings and movements of the Holy Spirit, being faithful to God’s commands. As we come together to declare God’s faithfulness, this nation will, once again, head in the direction that God intends. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Regardless of the winds of adversity and the fires of the enemy, God’s people have a power that cannot be matched. Let us join in faith and continue to pray and speak of God’s faithfulness in order to bring God’s people and this nation into the fullness of God’s plans. Note this additional encouragement from God’s word:
Colossians 2:15 – “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (ESV).
Psalm 33:8-11 – “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.

PRAY FOR AMERICA: THANK GOD for His many blessings on America throughout it's history. May we then ask that AMERICA once again be a blessing TO GOD, by once again submitting to HIS will in our affairs - both personal and national - that He may truly "heal our land." (2 Chron. 7:14) Short of that, we should not be saying "God Bless America"but instead "God be merciful towards America!"
PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS 1) Pray for President Trump and his advisers, that they would select Godly leaders at the federal level who will be accountable to do an excellent job (or be fired!; that he would seek God's wisdom and be enabled to lead our country effectively in the years ahead; and 2) Pray our leaders at every level of government will Spirit-filled, leading us with Godly wisdom and integrity; that they will  only pass legislation and enact policies that will benefit Americans today as well as future generations and NOT do any lasting harm.
SUPREME COURT: PRAY that the justices will only hand down decisions that are Constitutionally sound and in the best interests of our country now and for future generations.

World-Wide Prayer Requests:

1/1 - PRAISE GOD for the continuing recent successes against ISIS! Pray that coalition forces will be able to  fully destroy the leadership and infrastructure of ISIS.
*For believers in Syria and in this region as they navigate so much uncertainty. May they remain faithful to God through these most difficult times as He sustains them with peace and His Spirit's strength.

#2440 (9/25) "From Hurricane Florence to Hurricane Kavanaugh - Analyzing the two September storms that hit America"

"FROM HURRICANE FLORENCE TO HURRICANE KAVANAUGH - ANALYZING THE TWO SEPTEMBER STORMS THAT HIT AMERICA"by Marvin Olasky Post Date: September 24, 2018; https://world.wng.org/2018/09/from_hurricane_florence_to_hurricane_kavanaugh_1

“Let’s tear this world apart and build a better one,” actress Anne Hathaway said on Sept. 15 while accepting an award from the Human Rights Campaign for her support of LGBTQ efforts. As Hathaway spoke, Hurricane Florence was tearing apart the Carolina coast. At least 43 humans, 5,500 hogs, and 3.4 million chickens died, mostly because of widespread flooding.

Meanwhile, Washington hands were tearing apart Donald Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court—and further destroying already-declining confidence in the Court and its fairness. In July psychologist Christine Blasey Ford privately alleged that Kavanaugh assaulted her in 1982, when she was 15 and Kavanaugh was 17. Her public accusation on Sept. 16, and Kavanaugh’s prompt denial, launched a thousand “Who do you believe?” columns.

As of Monday, Sept. 24, Ford and Kavanaugh were scheduled to testify on Thursday, Sept. 27. If their testimonies are diametrically opposed, as they appear to be, and there are no corroborating witnesses, I won’t be speechifying about guilt or innocence. But I can read what the Bible at least six times says about the evidence needed to declare a person guilty.
Deuteronomy 19:15 states, “A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.” Paul in 2 Corinthians 13:1 declares, “Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.” 1 Timothy 5:19, recognizing our tendency to tear down leaders and aspirants to leadership, adds, “Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.”

A witness in our modern age can be DNA evidence, such as that which made Bill Clinton admit to sex with intern Monica Lewinsky. It can be photographic evidence (now-retired Sen. Al Franken’s hands on a sleeping woman) or taped boasts (like those that almost sunk Donald Trump in 2016). Sometimes, tough judgment calls are necessary: What about stretching the Biblical definition of witness to include someone told right after sexual assault? What if a particular incident has only one witness, but there are many incidents?

We can assess nuances, but the principles are clear, and as of Sept. 24 it was clear that the last-minute barrage against Kavanaugh from Ford and another just-surfaced accuser, Deborah Ramirez, was falling far short of the Biblical standard. The two accusers say offenses took place in rooms at parties where others were present, but none of those others were backing up the accusations. Should Supreme Court justices be exceptions to evidentiary requirements because they serve for life? Remember that they don’t: If Kavanaugh gains a seat and proof that he lied comes out later, Congress could and should impeach him.

Why not delay now? Please forgive me for being a bit cynical about the timing of these new revelations. “Democrats Are Coming After Kavanaugh on Abortion” was the headline of a Sept. 5 article in liberal journalism’s crown jewel, The Atlantic. That didn’t stop the nominee, so a week later Democrats started coming after him on a sexual accusation that some of them had known about two months before. Let’s not reward them. Republicans are also acting politically, of course, but this time Biblical standards concerning witnesses are on their side.

As Kavanaugh was losing his reputation, some South Carolina residents were losing their lives. Mark Carter King, 63, and Debra Collins Rion, 61, died of carbon monoxide poisoning from running a generator indoors. Two mental health patients, Wendy Newton, 45, and Nicolette Green, 43, drowned when floodwaters swept away the van in which deputies were driving them. Rhonda R. Hartley, 30, drove her pickup truck into standing water near Gilbert, S.C., lost control, and hit a tree. Michael Dalton Prince, 23, died after the truck he was riding in landed upside down in a flooded ditch.
In North Carolina, a 3-month-old baby boy died when a large pine tree fell atop a mobile home, splitting it in the middle. A mother and her 8-month-old child died when a massive tree crushed their brick house in Wilmington. One man, 78, died from electrocution in the rain while trying to connect extension cords for a generator, and another, 77, died when he went outside to check on his hunting dogs and was blown down by strong winds. A 46-year-old man in Brunswick County died when a tree he was cutting fell on him.

Thousands of Carolina residents had to move from flooded homes to emergency housing and hotels. Farmers just before harvest time lost lots of sweet potatoes and peanuts, which grow beneath the soil and are particularly susceptible to flooding: "This hurricane couldn't have come at a worse time," North Carolina Farm Bureau President Larry Wooten said. Five of North Carolina's top six farming counties are within the hardest-hit areas in the eastern part of the state.

The likely loss of a third of this year’s North Carolina tobacco crop will not be hazardous to health, but a possible flow of coal ash from a Duke Energy plant into the Cape Fear River is potential trouble for humans, fish, and wildlife. National Guardsman Luis Ocampo also faced a hazard: After helping battered New Bern for 10 days, he returned home and found his laptop, gaming system, large TV, and other objects stolen. Then a GoFundMe page for Ocampo reportedly raised nearly $15,000 in one day.

The good news amid this bad news is that many had the opportunity to love their neighbors as themselves. Hurricanes and some politicians tear the world apart and leave a worse one, but storms also bring forward heroism and love. Individual boaters rescue stranded residents. Churches open their doors. Christian relief organizations send teams to help. On this we have the testimony of thousands.

#2439 (9/24) "The Kavanaugh Hearings and the Clash Between #MeToo and #FalselyAccused"

"THE KAVANAUGH HEARINGS AND THE CLASH BETWEEN #METOO AND #FALSELY ACCUSED"Michael Brown: Sep 24, 2018; https://townhall.com/columnists/michaelbrown/2018/09/24/the-kavanaugh-hearings-and-the-clash-between-metoo-and-falselyaccused-n2521884 [AS I SEE IT: Isn't it interesting how the mainstream meadia conveniently ignores (or is not as eager to present evidence of ) the men who have been falsely accused of things such as Judge Kavanaugh has? Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty?" All this is more evidence of why Americans are increasingly wary of the more and more obvious bias in the reporting by mainstream media. - Stan]
--------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To date, not a single alleged witness provided by Prof. Christine Blasey Ford has corroborated her charges. And until Sunday night, not another woman came forward with any charge of any kind against Judge Kavanaugh. Now, however, that another woman has emerged, also claiming improper behavior from Kavanaugh when he was in college. How do we sort this out?

The entire public testimony of Kavanaugh’s professional life has been virtually without blemish.         That’s why pundits like Dennis Prager urge us not even to consider whether Kavanaugh misbehaved while in high-school 36 years ago. In Prager’s view, even if Kavanaugh was guilty, that’s not who he has been for decades, and we should appreciate the man he is and has been for so many years.
David French also reminded us that, in contrast with prominent men like Bill Clinton or Donald Trump, there is not a long line of women echoing the charges of abuse or impropriety. Because of this, he suggested, Kavanaugh has more of a presumption of innocence.

Then there is the seriousness of bringing a false accusation, something that could destroy someone’s career, family, or even life. Do we take that lightly? How can we?
An article on National Review notes that thousands of men have been falsely accused of sexual misconduct and crimes. Many have even spent years in prison although innocent. (The article, by Michelle Malkin, was titled, “Don’t ‘Believe Women.’ Believe Evidence.”)
For example, Brian Franklin, spent 21 years of a life sentence in prison after he was convicted in 1995 of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl who had committed perjury on the stand and later won a reversal of his conviction in 2016.
Joshua Horner, serving a 50-year sentence for sexual abuse of a young girl, was exonerated. There had been no DNA, no corroborating witnesses, and no other forensic evidence. Just the word of his accuser.
Victor Burnette cared for his grandmother and was getting ready to start his career.  In 1979 a woman identified him as the man who raped her. He was convicted and spent three decades fighting to clear his name before DNA testing cleared him in 2009.

Tragically, just as thousands of rapes are not reported every year, and just as countless cases of sexual abuse are not ruled in favor of the female victim, there are countless cases of false accusations against men.

That’s why Michelle Malkin gives these simple guidelines:
The role of the press should be verification, not validation.
Rape is a devastating crime. So is lying about it.
It’s not victim-blaming to get to the bottom of the truth. It’s liar-shaming.
Don’t believe a gender. Believe evidence.
How, then, do we sort things out? Those who’ve read my previous, relevant articles know that I’ve done my best to remain impartial, although I’ve been skeptical of Ford’s charges. (See "Should Your Past Sins Disqualify You Today?" - https://askdrbrown.org/library/should-your-past-sins-disqualify-you-today; and"Justice Kavanaugh vs Prof. Ford: The Challenge of Impartiality"- https://askdrbrown.org/library/justice-kavanaugh-vs-prof-ford-challenge-impartiality.)

Now that another accuser has come forward, there should be a clear path forward. What does the evidence say? What do other eyewitnesses say?
It’s true that the attacks on Kavanaugh have the fingerprints of a Democratic hit job. But do we ignore them because their timing is beyond suspicious? If Justice Kavanaugh is not the man he claims to be (or at least, the man he claims he was back then), shouldn’t we know? Conversely, if he’s been falsely accused, how can we not do everything in our power to clear his name?
When it comes to Ford’s accusations, her credibility is not looking good. Not only did the other men she placed at the alleged party deny her report, but a lifelong female friend whom Ford referenced has also denied any knowledge of Ford’s story. That doesn’t mean she’s evil or lying. As traumatic as the alleged event may have been, since she acknowledged being drunk and only having foggy memory of some of the salient details, she could simply be remembering incorrectly. Vividly, for sure; incorrectly, certainly possible.

When it comes to the new witness, reportedly a Never Trumper (if that matters), her charges are more extreme. But they are more easily corroborated (or refuted), since she makes very specific claims about a particular party at Yale that was allegedly known to quite a few others.
Already, however, we have serious reason to be skeptical of the charges brought by the new accuser, Deborah Ramirez. As reported in The New Yorker, “She was at first hesitant to speak publicly, partly because her memories contained gaps because she had been drinking at the time of the alleged incident. In her initial conversations with The New Yorker, she was reluctant to characterize Kavanaugh’s role in the alleged incident with certainty. After six days of carefully assessing her memories and consulting with her attorney, Ramirez said that she felt confident enough of her recollections to say that she remembers” all the scandalous details.
With all respect to this new accuser, may I ask all of you who used to drink how well you can sort out your drunken memories from more than 30 years ago? How confident you would feel swearing under oath that missing details are now coming back accurately? How sure would you be about putting someone else’s life online based on your reconstruction of a foggy, intoxicated, old event?

I’ve heard from professionals who have sought to explain why Prof. Ford chose not to come forward until now. They say this is in keeping with other victims of abuse. I’ve also heard from professionals who have explained how easy it is to alter past memories. All the more is this true if you were drunk. When it comes to Deborah Ramirez, then, even if we give her the benefit of the doubt, there should be enough other people to confirm or deny her story one way or the other. And quickly, at that.

As Michelle Malkin urged, believe the evidence, not a gender.

Sadly, though, should Kavanaugh be exonerated, this whole situation reminds us of how difficult our society has made it for good people to serve in public office. Who in their right mind would welcome this kind of abuse?

May this also be a teachable moment for our nation before we destroy ourselves with our very own hands.
