"What Is Reformation Day All About?," - by Robert Rothwell,  Oct 30, 2013; http://www.ligonier.org/blog/what-reformation-day-all-about/

[Today], much of the culture will be focused on candy and things that go bump in the night. Protestants, however, have something far more significant to celebrate on October 31. [Today]  is Reformation day, which commemorates what was perhaps the greatest move of God’s Spirit since the days of the Apostles. But what is the significance of Reformation Day, and how should we consider the events it commemorates?

At the time, few would have suspected that the sound of a hammer striking the castle church door in Wittenberg, Germany, would soon be heard around the world and lead ultimately to the greatest transformation of Western society since the apostles first preached the Gospel throughout the Roman empire. Martin Luther’s nailing of his ninety-five theses to the church door on October 31, 1517, provoked a debate that culminated finally in what we now call the Protestant Reformation.

An heir of Bishop Augustine of Hippo, Martin Luther is one of the most significant figures God has raised up since that time. This law student turned Augustinian monk became the center of a great controversy after his theses were copied and distributed throughout Europe. Initially protesting the pope’s attempt to sell salvation, Luther’s study of Scripture soon led him to oppose the church of Rome on issues including the primacy of the Bible over church tradition and the means by which we are found righteous in the sight of God.

This last issue is probably Luther’s most significant contribution to Christian theology. Though preached clearly in the New Testament and found in the writings of many of the church fathers, the medieval bishops and priests had largely forgotten the truth that our own good works can by no means merit God’s favor. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone, and good works result from our faith, they are not added to it as the grounds for our right standing in the Lord’s eyes (Eph. 2:8-10). Justification, God’s declaration that we are not guilty, forgiven of sin, and righteous in His sight comes because through our faith alone the Father imputes, or reckons to our account, the perfect righteousness of Christ (2 Cor. 5:21).

Martin Luther’s rediscovery of this truth led to a whole host of other church and societal reforms and much of what we take for granted in the West would have likely been impossible had he never graced the scene. Luther’s translation of the Bible into German put the Word of God in the hands of the people, and today Scripture is available in the vernacular language of many countries, enabling lay people to study it with profit. He reformed the Latin mass by putting the liturgy in the common tongue so that non-scholars could hear and understand the preached word of God and worship the Lord with clarity. Luther lifted the unbiblical ban on marriage for the clergy and by his own teaching and example radically transformed the institution itself. He recaptured the biblical view of the priesthood of all believers, showing all people that their work had purpose and dignity because in it they can serve their Creator.

Today, Luther’s legacy lives on in the creeds and confessions of Protestant bodies worldwide. As we consider his importance this Reformation Day, let us equip ourselves to be knowledgeable proclaimers and defenders of biblical truth. May we be eager to preach the Gospel of God to the world and thereby spark a new reformation of church and culture.

"HALLOWEEN - Reformation Day,"- Redeeming Halloween, October 31, 2013; By Brad Winsted;
http://www.cbn.com/spirituallife/onlinediscipleship/halloween/reformation_day.aspx

CBN.com – PCANews - What will your church be doing this Reformation Day, October 31st? For so many Halloween presents a dilemma, what do you do with a holiday with roots in the occult? It would be something like walking home late at night, past a grave yard, you notice that there is a celebration going with people dressed in death-glorifying or satanic costumes, beckoning you to come in and join them. You rush home with a sense that something is VERY wrong. You are not surprised to learn that Halloween is now the most celebrated holiday of the year in our government schools (since Christmas and Easter are BIG no-no’s). You will see the signs of the event on schoolhouse windows and you can expect large celebrations of this occultic day.

Even a cursory look at the origins of Halloween will reveal satanic rituals played out in trick and treating, jack-o-lanterns, witches, ghosts, the dead and on and on. If you've ever taken time to research any of these Halloween practices you'll see the satanic background from the Celtic tribes of Scotland and Ireland.

So, should we retreat into the basements and attics of our homes, turn out the lights and hope that our ghoulishly dressed neighborhood children will pass us by? Our children would probably get the idea that the reasons for retreating are not sufficient to deny them activities every child loves -- dressing up and eating candy!

Well, how about a Reformation Day party at your church? I know that many churches have a "Harvest Day Celebration" or other such event where kids get dressed up as Bible characters and the fellowship hall is full of games to keep the kids off the streets. But I'm suggesting going a step further. Let's make it a day where we can learn more about our Reformation roots.

October 31 celebrates the day that the Reformation in Europe began with Martin Luther posting his 95 theses on the Wittenburg church door, leading to a firestorm response in Germany. Why not use this occasion for a celebration of our Reformed heritage. And yes, this can be fun for the kids too!

Why not have a celebration at church where all get dressed up as characters from the Reformation (I've dressed up as John Calvin, Martin Luther, a peasant, and even John Tetzel (the salesman of those infamous indulgences)? When I couldn't get a 16th century idea then I dressed as a Bible character. You can transform the fellowship hall into Wittenburg, Germany or Geneva. Here is an opportunity to go over the great "solas" of the Reformation: by Scripture alone, by grace alone, by Christ alone, by faith alone, and to God be the glory alone. Have people explain them. Show a video of one of the reformers. Draw murals of Reformation events.

Here are some other things our church has done over the years: Medieval line dancing (a lot like Scottish line dancing), Medieval relay races (put the indulgences in the bottle), bobbing for apples, German cover dish dinner, acting out your character (don't tell anyone who you are, but act it out -- the ideas are limited only by time and background).

Children's Ministry International  has developed a small booklet, Heroes of the Reformation, that contains many of these ideas in it, along with lessons on the lives of Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox and other reformers. Also, you can order videos on the lives of the reformers from Gateway Films .

Let's make October 31 a day of great remembrance (and educational opportunity) of our Reformed heritage.

"60 MINUTES: YES, AMERICA, THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION LIED TO YOU ABOUT BENGHAZI" -By: John Hayward; 10/28/2013, http://www.humanevents.com/2013/10/28/60-minutes-yes-america-the-obama-administration-lied-to-you-about-benghazi/

“60 Minutes” ran a report on the Benghazi scandal Sunday night that confirmed its status as an enduring scandal with many questions still remaining to be answered.Good thing the media was willing to cover for Barack Obama until he got re-elected, because this is some really damning stuff.  The video is about 15 minutes long, and well worth watching in full: [Go to web link listed above]

For mainstream media news consumers, a lot of this will come as a total shock.  (CBS News, it should be noted, has been far more aggressive in pursuing the Benghazi story than its competitors; they say Sunday night’s report was a year in the making.) Yes, America, you were lied to, early and often, by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and their crew.  They knew ... well it was a terrorist attack from the beginning.  They knew it was never a protest over a provocative YouTube video.  They looked right into the faces of the families who lost sons, brothers, and husbands in Benghazi and lied to them.

The important point to take away from this exhaustive report is that the Administration knew it was a terrorist attack before it happened.  Security officials in Libya knew al-Qaeda was going to launch an attack… because they said so.  They boasted online of plans to attack the Red Cross, the British, and the Americans.  ”They made good on two out of the three promises,” said Lt. Colonel Andy Wood, who was based in Tripoli and met routinely with Ambassador Christopher Stevens, and was at his post when terrorist forces tried to assassinate the British ambassador.  ”It was a matter of time until they captured the third one.”

Wood said his warnings were ignored in Washington, even when he stated his belief that al-Qaeda was in the final planning stages for the attack, and it became known that a senior al-Qaeda leader, Abu Anas al-Libi, had been dispatched to Libya to set up a terror network.

As he said in Congressional testimony, deputy ambassador Greg Hicks wondered by his requests for help during the attack were ignored.  The Administration’s response has been to claim that no assets were in place to respond to that call for assistance.  That hardly lets the Obama team off the hook.  On the contrary, it’s more baffling and outrageous than ever that no contingency rescue plans were made.  The security situation in Benghazi was shockingly inappropriate for the threat level.  Wood said the Administration wouldn’t even take the simple step of relocating the consulate after its situation began deteriorating in the weeks before the attack.

Another new revelation in the “60 Minutes” report is the testimony of a former British soldier who uses the pseudonym “Morgan Jones.”  He was in charge of training the unarmed – yes, unarmed - security guards at the consulate.  He didn’t have anything to do with the armed militia hired by the State Department to respond to an attack, but they scared him to death.  ”These guys are no good.  You need to get ‘em out of here,” he told State, warning that they wouldn’t stand and fight if they came under fire.  ”In the end I got quite bored of hearing my own voice say it.”

Sadly, Jones was right – the militia broke and ran, leaving the unarmed men he had trained to call for help that never would have come, if the Obama Administration had gotten its way.  But as we all know, someone did come: the brave men from the CIA annex.  Lara Logan of CBS News recalled how they “ignored orders to wait and raced to the compound, at times running and shooting their way through the streets just to get there.  Inside the compound, they repelled a force of as many as sixty armed terrorists, and managed to save five American lives and recover the body of Foreign Service Officer Sean Smith.  They were forced to fight their way out before they could find the ambassador.”

Jones infiltrated an al-Qaeda-controlled hospital on the night of the attack to get eyes on the body of his slain friend, Ambassador Chris Stevens.  He also got into the compound that was under siege – taking down an al-Qaeda fighter who spotted him, with a quick application of his rifle butt to the terrorist’s face – and witnessed the mortar strike that killed former SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.  Jones compared scoring three mortar hits on the roof of that building, in the dark, to “getting the basketball through the hoop over your shoulder,” identifying such precision as a result of “coordination, planning, training, experienced personnel… They knew what they were doing.  That was a well-executed attack.

That, of course, is not what Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and the rest of their dishonest team told us.  No one has yet been held accountable for what happened in Benghazi, and if Obama has his way, no one ever will be.  No one who watches this CBS News report would trust Hillary Clinton to handle security for a Little League game.  Perhaps the end of her presidential aspirations will be the closest anyone gets to answering for the blindness and dereliction of duty that got Ambassador Stevens, Woods, Doherty, and foreign service officer Sean Smith killed in Benghazi.

Morgan Jones said Smith expressed concerns about the security situation a week before the attack.  Jones decided to keep his own fears to himself during that conversation.  ”I didn’t want to worry him anymore, you know?” he told Lara Logan.  ”He’s a nice guy.  I sort of promised him he’d be OK.”  He said he thinks about that promise “every day.”  That’s a lot more thought than anyone in the Obama Administration evidently gave to Benghazi, beyond making plans to minimize the political damage and squeak through the 2012 election.

"From One Obamacare to Another"By Cameron Seward, October 28, 2013

In an attempt to divert attention from the mounting failures [1] of his signature piece of legislation, President Obama is now back to beating the broken drum on amnesty [2]. At a time when most Americans want [3] Washington to focus on the economy and the federal budget deficit, the President is attempting to foist another massive Obamacare-style bill on us in the form of the Senate-passed amnesty bill.

The House is considering various bills relating to different aspects of the immigration debate. Even though House leadership has promised not to pass a “comprehensive” immigration bill like the Senate’s, that is not good enough. Indeed, the President’s close ally, Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), already gave the game away when he said recently: “Get us to conference. In a conference, we can negotiate the notion of bringing all those bills together.”

Obamacare2.0_v1

It is abundantly clear that the end goal is for the House to pass any bill — anything to get to conference with the Senate where a comprehensive, amnesty-centric bill is inevitable.

As we continue to see with Obamacare, the American people are always at the losing end of these monstrous pieces of legislation. An all-or-nothing approach to immigration reform will hurt [7] Americans by disregarding the rule of law and costing taxpayers trillions in benefits and services for those granted amnesty, while not guaranteeing enforcement of laws already on the books.

Want to see how the Obama Administration could potentially use waiver power for immigration? Look no further than Obamacare [8]. The Senate-passed amnesty bill includes similar provisions.

Do these flawed, costly, unfair and unworkable policies sound familiar? This is Obamacare 2.0, another misguided call for comprehensive legislation [9]. Why should the American people trust an administration that can’t even successfully set up a website to handle something as complex as immigration reform?

Heritage has mapped out a positive path forward [10] to immigration reform.

"Health Care or Control"

InsideWashington

An American history lesson - By Dave Ficere, Oct. 24, 2013 http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/issues

“Obamacare is really, I think, the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery [and] in a way, it is slavery…because it is making all of us subservient to the government.” – Dr. Ben Carson, former pediatric neurosurgery director at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center
The renown neurosurgeon has never been one to shy away from politically incorrect speech, and his address last week at the Values Voter Summit was no exception. Carson – who rose to fame earlier this year after delivering a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast – not only compared The Affordable Care Act (ACA) – also known as Obamacare – to slavery, but also challenged Americans to not be ashamed of their Judeo-Christian heritage.
The ACA, Carson told the assembled group, “was never about health care – it was all about control.” People don’t understand the critical importance of health, Carson added, until someone close to them or they themselves become deathly sick and have to struggle to survive. Your health, Carson said, “is the most valuable thing that you have – everything else pales in significance compared to your health…and that’s the reason that your health should be controlled by you and not by the government,” he proclaimed to loud applause and cheers.
“It’s time – it’s really time for the people – we, the people of America, to stop being afraid of the government and put it in its place,” Carson declared, drawing a lesson from history.
“Vladimir Lenin, one of the fathers of socialism and communism, said that socialized medicine is the keystone to the establishment of a socialist state,” the neurosurgeon said, adding that those who don’t know history are the ones that think fears about Obamacare are irrational.
Using another historical reference, the neurosurgeon cited French commentator Alexis de Tocqueville, who was impressed by the public use of religious principles in America. “What impressed him the most was the fact that we taught, in our public schools, values and principles, and we were not ashamed to use the Bible as the source of those values and principles,” Carson said. Today, however, there is debate over whether or not America is a Judeo-Christian nation. Those who doubt America’s Judeo-Christian heritage “don’t know anything about the founding of this nation,” the neurosurgeon asserted. “If we try to throw God out of our nation, he will neglect us, and we will go down the tubes. We must not be ashamed of our relationship with God,” Carson added, warning if we are, we’re going to lose it.
Along with the importance of faith, Carson also cited the family as one sign of a stable nation. “We need to recognize that God created the family structure for a reason, and marriage is a sacred institution by God himself,” he declared. “There is no reason that man needs to change the definition of marriage,” he added.
Part of the family structure, Carson said, is plain old hard work. Using his mother as an example, the neurosurgeon argued that the best way to help the poor isn’t welfare but opportunity and “that can-do attitude that allows people to move up” the economic ladder. “When the government provides for the poor, they become dependent and lose the drive that is necessary to achieve in our society,” Carson pointed out.
Returning to Tocqueville, Carson said the French political thinker and historian was amazed that “anybody finishing the second grade was completely literate, could read the newspaper, could have a political discussion, could tell him how the government worked.” By contrast, Carson said, today 30 percent of Americans don’t even finish high school.
Your forefathers – and mine – most likely came to America from a foreign country. Many of them immigrated to the “Land of Opportunity” seeking just that: a better way of life for their family and the chance to build their own “American Dream.” Today, as government expands into every area of life those opportunities become harder to achieve. The current debate over the Affordable Care Act represents not only a question about healthcare but a discussion over what kind of nation America will be in the 21st century and beyond. Will it be the “land of the free” or morph into a European-style state where the government controls virtually every aspect of life?
Pray today, for America and her leaders as the nation faces the challenge of remaining the beacon of freedom to the world.

Eric Metaxas
"The Tragic Inaction of the Church" -  10/21/2013, Eric Metaxas. JOY ALLMOND/BILLYGRAHAM.ORG; http://www.charismanews.com/us/41443-the-tragic-inaction-of-the-church [NOTE: This article reflects what the late Chuck Colson often said - Let the Church BE the Church!- Stan]

[This article was originally posted on BillyGraham.org.]

Author and cultural commentator Eric Metaxas is on a mission to rally the church to stand firm against the attacks on our religious freedoms, and to be the church by involving the gospel in everything we do. (Facebook) [The author of several books, Eric Metaxas is perhaps best known for Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery and Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. He often provides commentary on the subject of religious freedom.]

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Christian who resisted the Nazis and chose to suffer—and eventually die—for the sake of the oppressed Jews. William Wilberforce led the campaign to end the British slave trade. Both of these men did what they did because of their faith in Jesus Christ. But Metaxas does more than write and speak on the feats of these great heroes of the faith. He urges the church of today to take the same kind of actions.

Before we can take on our role as the church in areas like social justice activism and preserving society, we must be aware of our current freedoms and our position in regard to the state.

“There is a fundamental misunderstanding of the separation of church and state. The church is to be protected from the state. Not the reverse," explains Metaxas. "People have divorced faith from public life, mostly because of this misunderstanding.”

We have also confused the terms freedom of worship with freedom of religion. So, what is the difference?

Freedom of religion allows us to take our faith into the public square as we leave our corporate worship settings. “The founders have said that we can and should do that,” adds Metaxas. “That means we can exercise our faith freely in the workplace, or wherever we are.”

Freedom of worship allows us to worship within the confines of the church building. However, that freedom is not valid outside of that church building. Furthermore, that means that whatever views you have on the hot-button social issues, such as abortion or same-sex marriage must be kept within the walls your home or your church building.

“They have freedom of worship in China, and they had it in Germany in the 1930s. Today, that is we have—freedom of worship. So today, we are slowly privatizing our faith because of this great misunderstanding,” says Metaxas. “Once we leave our homes or our churches, we are expected to accept the secular humanist view of everything.”

This privatization of our faith is believed to be an outward sign of a loss of religious freedom. The publicity of faith is what Metaxas and countless others believe to have made our country great.
For example, today, because of the faith of our Founding Fathers, we do not argue about whether to help the needy. We argue about how to do it. Helping the needy is a biblical principle, and we still do so today because of the values instilled by our godly Founding Fathers.

In his latest book, Seven Men: And the Secret of Their Greatness, Metaxas gives examples of people—more specifically, seven men—who changed their culture because they exercised freedom of religion.“When Christian voices are stifled, salt and light are removed from the culture. We see Jackie Robinson exercise his faith on the baseball field and was instrumental in the civil rights movement. And, of course, Wilberforce and Bonhoeffer did what they did because they publicly exercised their faith,” Metaxas points out.

In all of these cases and countless others, faith played a role in expanding freedom, blessing the nation, and ministering to the outcast.

Metaxas continues, “When you stifle voices of faith, you destroy all of those opportunities to live out faith by doing good things. So, when we as believers lose religious freedom, everyone loses.”

The Gospel: The Ultimate Catalyst for Action
Wilberforce, Bonhoeffer and Robinson all made a profound impact on their societies, but the common thread between these men runs deeper than external results. They were motivated by more than justice; they were motivated by the gospel. They were not merely social or cultural Christians. They took Scripture very seriously, and then they took action.

Metaxas urges today’s church to do the same—to be involved in everything from culture to politics, willing to speak the truth humbly and boldly in love.

“If the church had been the church in Germany, had stood up and spoken loudly, as one, they could have won. But they were timid, just as Christians are timid now on so many issues. The church has to be heroically, courageously vocal. People will suffer because the church has not stepped up and lived out the faith we claim to have.”

Rep. Smith: Obamacare 'subsidizing a culture of death'
REP. SMITH: OBAMACARE ‘SUBSIDIZING A CULTURE OF DEATH’- By: Rep. Chris Smith, 10/21/2013; http://www.humanevents.com/2013/10/21/rep-smith-americans-health-plan-subsidizing-a-culture-of-death/ [PRAISE GOD for long time champions of the unborn such as Rep. Smith. Let's pray that God will increase the number of those who will eloquently and effectively stand up for the sanctity of human life. - Stan]

Americans deserve to know if their health plan will be subsiding a culture of death.

As the Obamacare exchanges have gone “live” this month, it has become evident that it is nearly impossible for individuals seeking exchange plans to identify which, if any, plans on their state exchange exclude abortion.

The new law requires premium payers to be assessed an abortion surcharge every month to pay for abortions.  But many pro-life Americans may unwittingly purchase pro-abortion plans because of a marketing secrecy clause embedded in Obamacare which stipulates that the surcharge be minimally disclosed only at the time of enrollment.  In other words, bury it in the fine print.

To overcome this highly deceptive practice, pro-life buyers of Obamacare health insurance plans must ask—no, they must insist on knowing with certitude before signing up that the plan they intend to purchase does not fund abortion on demand. If we fail to ask, the new law will compel us to directly subsidize the killing of unborn children by our surcharge payments to an abortion-only fund.  Purchasing a pro-abortion health insurance plans makes us complicit in the culture of death.

This is also why over 100 Members of Congress and I introduced the Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act, H.R. 3279, a bill that requires information regarding either inclusion or exclusion of abortion coverage as well as the existence of an abortion surcharge to be “prominently displayed” in all marketing or advertising materials, comparison tools or summary of benefits and coverage explanations.

I  logged onto the DC exchange myself and looked at the summaries of benefits listed online but there was no abortion coverage explained in any of the materials available. Preliminary anecdotal evidence gathered by my staff also has shown that this basic information is either completely unavailable or incredibly difficult to obtain.  A representative with the federal government’s “Health Insurance Marketplace Live Chat” said, “You may have to wait until you pick a plan to see if they cover abortions.”  A telephone representative with the D.C. Health Link said that persons wishing to learn whether or not abortion is covered should call each individual health insurance carrier directly. So far the only clear information we have identified about abortion coverage has revealed that all the plans in Connecticut and Rhode Island include elective abortion.

The average person seeking coverage on a marketplace should not have to spend hours trying to obtain basic information about whether or not they will have to pay a surcharge for a procedure that dismembers and chemically poisons innocent unborn children. My legislation will end the uncertainty for purchasers and ensure transparency.

This is a Right to Know bill. Americans have a right to know upfront and with full transparency when they are purchasing a plan that subsidizes the killing of unborn children.Even the most ardent advocate of abortion should embrace full disclosure.

(To rid Obamacare of its massive expansion of abortion on demand facilitation and funding, I along with 136 bipartisan cosponsors have also introduced the No Taxpayers Funding for Abortion Act, H.R. 7)

Abortion isn’t health care—it kills babies and harms women.  We live in an age of ultrasound imaging—the ultimate window to the womb and the child who resides there and are in the midst of a fetal health care revolution, an explosion of benign interventions designed to diagnose, treat and cure the youngest patients.

We should all be able to agree that consumers should have the tools to choose whether to buy one of Obama’s abortion plans or to find a plan that excludes abortion coverage.

"Global Warming and Scientism - Dealing in Dogma"; By: Eric Metaxas|Breakpoint.org : October 9, 2013; http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/breakpoint-commentaries-archive/entry/13/23530?spMailingID=7129240&spUserID=MTMyMjM2ODE5OQS2&spJobID=92255822&spReportId=OTIyNTU4MjIS1

Late last month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, issued its latest report. In it, the panel “doubled down” on its earlier conclusions about human activity and the climate. Most notably, the IPCC went from saying that human activity was “very likely” the cause of global warming to “extremely likely.” It did so despite acknowledging that there has been a seventeen-year pause in said global warming.

The panel’s critics, of whom there are many, wasted no time in pointing out the report’s shortcomings. Richard Lindzen of MIT said that “the latest IPCC report has truly sunk to a level of hilarious incoherence.” He added that “they are proclaiming increased confidence in their models as the discrepancies between their models and observations increase.”

As if to reinforce Lindzen’s point, Thomas Lovejoy of George Mason, writing in the New York Times, asked the rhetorical question, “Does the leveling-off of temperatures mean that the climate models used to track them are seriously flawed?” His reply was “Not really. It is important to remember that models are used so that we can understand where the Earth system is headed.”

But why should we trust models to tell us where we’re headed when they can’t explain where we’ve been? Well, in Lovejoy’s telling, it comes down to an act of almost religious reverence. As he puts it, “It is time to restore the role of science to a respected place and reserve debate for understanding the implications of scientific results.”

Substitute “the Church” for “science” and “dogma” for “scientific results” and you could be talking about the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. Folks, this is scientism, the view that natural sciences “alone can yield true knowledge about man and society.” And let me go one step further: this is really nothing less than a kind of religion, a kind of fear-based religion, if I can put it that way.

Let’s at least try to be rational about this. One can be undecided about the extent, if any, of man-made global warming and still object to the kind of hubris, and shall we say fear-mongering, on display here. Even if you believe that the phenomenon is real and poses a threat, you’ve still got to be taken aback by this kind of chutzpah. That pretty much sums up where Bjorn Lomborg stands. As he wrote in USA Today, “the leading current solutions [to global warming] have almost no impact and [come] at a very high cost.”

Better then to focus on problems we can do something about. Since 2004, Lomborg, a former Greenpeace member and the author of “The Skeptical Environmentalist,” has convened a group of Nobel Laureates and other experts to discuss the world’s most pressing health and environmental issues. What has emerged is known as the Copenhagen Consensus. The Consensus does what those urging immediate action based on the IPCC report steadfastly decline to do, which is to say, set priorities. Instead of spending hundreds of billions, if not trillions, on what may be a quixotic fight against climate change, the Consensus proposes spending far more modest amounts in ways that can make a real difference in people’s lives. Investments in improved nutrition for children and expanded malaria treatment yield infinitely more “bang for the buck” than money spent on trying to roll back global warming, a phenomenon that, even if real, we do not have a clear handle on.

Not surprisingly, Lomborg’s approach is anathema to climate alarmists. But it’s one that Christians should consider. Its combination of wise stewardship and love of neighbor has an almost-biblical ring to it. And it leaves dogma where it belongs: to theologians.
