Thus far, I still cannot feel a peace about recognizing it as the culture does, even without all the "dark" stuff. I just think that if we engage in it at all, we give our stamp of approval to its excesses whether we mean to or not. We in effect say it is just an "innocent" celebration, but is it  really? Is there not a  way we couldn't start our own tradition of celebrating what the day was meant to be in the Church - the celebration of the reformation (see link to article below - "Celebrate the Reformation"? Can we not find a way to make such a celebration fun? Would that not make a  statement to the world that for "religious" people can celebrate their traditions and it not be "churchy" (sp?) ? Just wondering. - Stan]

Today is that strange holiday that many of us don’t know what to do with... Every year around this time, the ritual begins anew. The weather cools off, leaves change color and Christians start arguing about Halloween.

And many people love this night. It gives folks an excuse to host parties, kick off the holiday spending season, and it provides economic stimulus for the dental industry. Others use it as an excuse to flirt with things much darker than plastic skeletons and creative jack-o’lanterns. But what is Halloween really about? Is there something spiritual behind all the ghoulishness?

“Halloween is a satanic holiday,” say some. “It’s a celebration of death,” insist others. Back when I was a kid, a series of comic-book style tracts went around claiming that Halloween was really a pagan holiday when medieval Druids used to carry out human sacrifice under a full moon. I was surprised to learn that even modern pagans who love Halloween admit that this story is mostly made-up. As one self-professed pagan blogger at Patheos writes, “Halloween…feels like a pagan holiday, and it’s been categorized as one for several decades now…I sympathize,” he says, “but claiming that Halloween is ‘100% pagan’ is not a tenable argument.”daily_commentary_10_31_14

The very name “Halloween” means “holy evening”—a throwback to when Catholic Christians prepared for the Feast of All Saints on November 1st.

The history of the spooky costumes is unclear. Some sources say they date back to when Christians would dress up like demons—not for fun, but to disguise themselves from the marauding forces of darkness hoping to crash their celebration of their church’s heroes. Other sources say the costumes were originally about mocking Satan and his minions.

Kirk Cameron, who just finished a film about the history of Christmas, takes that view and is urging us to make the most of Halloween’s origins. How? Well, if you’re a Christian, he says you should be throwing “the biggest Halloween party on your block.” Cameron argues it’s a great way to make fun of the Devil and proclaim Jesus’ victory over sin and death to your neighbors.

Steven Wedgeworth, a pastor writing at the Calvinist International, gives a third perspective. In one of the best overviews out there on Halloween’s history, he concludes that neither story gets it all right. There are definitely echoes of paganism in Halloween, and All Hallows Eve had a major influence, too. But the holiday of today—especially the costumes and trick-or-treating—is a recent invention. Like the commercialized secular Christmas, he writes, Halloween as we know it has more to do with department stores than druids.

Well here’s my take: What Paul wrote in Philippians 4 should guide all our celebrations, no matter the day. Christians should think on “whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable.” It’s hard to imagine that axe-murderer get-ups and sexually provocative costumes pass that test. And we should also consider his teaching on meat sacrificed to idols in 1 Corinthians 9. Idol worship is always wrong, but eating meat sacrificed to idols is a matter of conscience. If you can’t in good conscience participate in Halloween, there are plenty of other things to celebrate this time of year: Reformation Day, All Saints Day on November 1, the beauty of fall’s changing colors, and as always, the sovereignty of God over everything.

Now if your family is anything like mine, you’re more likely to find characters from Disney’s “Frozen” than a band of nightmare monsters in your living room. But if you and your kids do enjoy a little spooky stuff, don’t worry. As Paul Pastor writes over at Christianity Today, “monsters point us to God.” “No story worth listening to,” he says, “lacks a villain. And no villain worth fighting lacks monstrosity.”

And there’s no story with more monstrous villains or darker darkness than the story of Scripture. It’s an evil that’s not just “out there,” but it’s in our own hearts. And yet this evil in the world and in our hearts is a defeated evil because of Jesus Christ.

And so, wherever you land on Halloween, don’t fear. Any real evil out there is a defeated foe.

I hope you'll also enjoy it. - Stan] ALSO, SEE UPDATE ABOVE! Praise God! But let's keep praying
MICHAEL LANDON BONANZA 8X10 B&W PHOTO RARE SHOT
Michael Landon, the hugely popular television star of Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, and Highway to Heaven, died in 1991 at age fifty-four. Landon’s last act—if you will—was widely hailed as his best: He publicly announced his diagnosis with terminal pancreatic cancer, appeared on the Tonight Show to openly discuss his pending death with Johnny Carson (almost unprecedented back then), and gave several interviews announcing his determination to hang on until the end. He told Life, “If I’m gonna die, death’s gonna have to do a lot of fighting to get me.”

Landon’s grit and determination inspired the nation. When he died a few months later, praise for his unshrinking courage led the obituaries. “Goodbye Little Joe,” in People, exemplified the media’s approach:

"As word of his condition spread, thousands of letters of encouragement and sympathy arrived daily. Scores of friends visited the house and stood vigil at the gates of the ranch. “I have X amount of energy,” said Landon, “and what I have, I want to spend with my family.” Landon’s youngest children, Sean, 4, and Jennifer, 7, were “emotionally distraught,” says longtime friend and business partner Kent McCray, “but Michael passed his strength along to them.” According to colleague John Warren, Landon also spent time videotaping his last wishes to family and friends.

If his friends and family had solace, it was in Landon’s extraordinary calm. Says Flynn of his old friend’s last hours: “It was like going off a diving board. He knew it was coming, and he was brave to the last."

Attitudes have changed about disease and death since then—and, in my view, not for the better. Indeed, today, many might secretly consider Landon a chump for choosing to struggle until his natural death.

If that seems harsh, consider the ongoing international media swoon over twenty-nine-year-old Brittany Maynard, who has announced her plan to commit assisted suicide—legal in Oregon, where she moved from California after being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Maynard is the subject of a well-planned PR campaign orchestrated by the George Soros-funded assisted-suicide advocacy group Compassion and Choices (formerly known as the Hemlock Society). C & C’s press release applauds Maynard’s “courage to tell her story as she is dying and alert all Americans to the choice of death with dignity” as “selfless and heroic.”

It’s one thing for a special-interest advocacy group to spin Maynard’s story in its ideological direction—and to be sure, Maynard is cooperating in that endeavor. But it is odd how eagerly the media has picked up this narrative of “courage” and “heroism.” There have been more than seven hundred assisted suicides in Oregon, and none—not even the first one—received the attention being devoted to reporting Maynard’s intentions.

More, it is striking how the reporting about Maynard’s decision to die resembles the reporting about Landon’s courage twenty-three years ago. For example, People, which once applauded Landon for fighting to the end, now has the mirror-opposite take about Maynard. It even made her a cover story:  "For the past 29 years, Brittany Maynard has lived a fearless life—running half marathons, traveling through Southeast Asia for a year and even climbing Mount Kilimanjaro."

So, it’s no surprise she is facing her death the same way. On Monday, Maynard will launch an online video campaign with the nonprofit Compassion and Choices, an end-of-life choice advocacy organization, to fight for expanding Death with Dignity laws nationwide.

Suicide has made Maynard an international celebrity. Partly, that’s because she is the perfect icon: young, pretty, newly wed, tragically dying, and transgressive for wanting to kill herself rather than face the rigors of late-stage brain cancer.

But that alone doesn’t explain why she has received the kind of high-profile attention usually reserved for movie stars, rock stars, and presidential candidates. She has been the subject of stories in Time, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USAToday, CNN, PBS, ABC, CBS, CNN—the list goes on. I mean, you know you’ve hit the big time when Rosie O’Donnell lauds you on The View!

But what if Maynard followed Landon’s path instead? She’d still be young, pretty, newly wed, and tragically dying—but there would be no cover stories in People or applause from Rosie O’Donnell. In fact, we would never have heard of her.

That speaks volumes about the state of our culture: If assisted suicide is now considered “courageous” and equates with “death with dignity,” doesn’t that imply that people like Landon who choose to “fight against the dying of the light” are undignified and perhaps less courageous?

Maynard isn’t nihilistic. She is just scared. Those using her tragedy for their own purposes—policy advocacy, ratings, Internet hits, etc.—can’t say the same. The words of Canadian journalist Andrew Coyne keep ricocheting around my brain: “A society that believes in nothing can offer no argument even against death. A culture that has lost its faith in life cannot comprehend why it should be endured.”

"Voting for Socialism?" -  Posted on October 1, 2014 by John Rabe; http://www.truthimpact.me/index.php/2014/10/voting-socialism/?utm_source=TruthInAction&utm_campaign=493f1d8469-10_7_14_October_eIMPACT&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_67fb03e2fb-493f1d8469-294381373#.VEmW6SJ4oRk

As recent trends have shown, many Christians are voting—but not from a Christian perspective. There are many reasons for this, including the fact that too many pulpits in Bible-believing churches have gone silent on issues that are considered “political.”

As a result, many Christians are confused. They desire to be charitable towards their neighbor. But they sometimes misunderstand how this is to take place, and, as a result, they vote for political candidates who advocate more and bigger government in the name of “compassion.”

Make no mistake. Christians are among the most charitable people in America. According to research from Arthur C. Brooks of the American Enterprise Institute, religious conservatives are the most likely group to give away money. This is because Christians believe in the Bible, which advocates charity. It does not, however, advocate being “charitable” with other people’s money. Brooks’ research showed that many political liberals, claiming to be compassionate, actually donated very little of their own money to charity—instead they advocated large government programs that used other people’s money, collected via forced taxation.

Being generous with other people’s money and property—which they had no choice in giving—is not charity. It is theft. The commandment given through Moses is clear: “You shall not steal” (Exodus 20:15 nkjv). For some reason, many Americans do not think it is unethical to take what does not belong to them from other people—as long as the government plays the role of middle man.

In reality, this is the basis of socialism. Socialism attempts to replace the goodness of God, demonstrated through the voluntary charity of His children, with forced government redistribution. And while most Americans claim to strongly reject socialism, vast numbers have repeatedly voted in favor of its softer forms.

The truth is, we are not entitled to anything we have not earned ourselves. The apostle Paul addressed this issue among Christians in Thessalonica. Because Christians are generous, there were some who were taking advantage, allowing other people to do the work. To them, Paul said:"… If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread (2 Thessalonians 3:10b-12 nkjv).

If a politician were to say this today, he would likely be accused of hard-heartedness and immediately packed off to sensitivity training. Yet, in inspired Scripture, Paul calls each person to earn his own living and not expect to live off the labor of others.

Of course, there are some who have fallen upon temporary hard times and are unable to work. There are widows and children who have been dealt difficult circumstances. As Christians, we are to be sacrificially charitable toward such people. And, as Brooks’ research shows, on the whole we are.

But Christians should not participate in socialism: neither by receiving that which has been forcibly taken from others—nor by voting for it this November

While the following is but one decision, I believe we can take encouragement from it that there is sound JUDICIAL reasoning that will support the High Court NOT making a ruling that will in effect continue the destruction of marriage and the family in America. May this decision spur YOUR prayers as it does my daily prayers that the Supreme Court WILL eventually rule with restraint and not recklessness. - Stan  P.S. - Because the article below is filled with legal language, I've underline in it the most important phrases I see in the decision.]

[Last] Tuesday, United States District Judge Juan Pérez-Giménez upheld Puerto Rico’s law defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman. He concluded that the U.S. Constitution does not require the redefinition of marriage. Notably, Pérez-Giménez becomes the first Democrat-appointee to the federal bench to uphold marriage law since the Supreme Court’s Windsor decision on the Defense of Marriage Act case.

And it is the Supreme Court’s Windsor decision that Pérez-Giménez highlights as to why states have constitutional authority to make marriage policy:

"The Windsor opinion did not create a fundamental right to same gender marriage nor did it establish that state opposite-gender marriage regulations are amenable to federal constitutional challenges. If anything, Windsor stands for the opposite proposition: it reaffirms the States’ authority over marriage, buttressing Baker’s conclusion that marriage is simply not a federal question."

Pérez-Giménez goes on to cite Windsor: “the definition of marriage is the foundation of the State’s broader authority to regulate the subject of domestic relations with respect to the ‘protection of offspring, property interests, and the enforcement of marital responsibilities.’”

Juan Pérez-Giménez (Photo: Wikimedia)
Juan Pérez-Giménez (Photo: Wikimedia)

The judge also appeals to an earlier Supreme Court case, Baker v. Nelson, where the Court rejected a challenge to a state’s marriage law because, the Court said, the challenge lacked a “substantial federal question.” Pérez-Giménez explains:

Contrary to the plaintiffs’ contention, Windsor does not overturn Baker; rather, Windsor and Baker work in tandem to emphasize the States’ “historic and essential authority to define the marital relation” free from “federal intrusion.”

Pérez-Giménez, a federal district court judge, also points out that his Circuit Court has cited the authority of Baker: “The First Circuit expressly acknowledged—a mere two years ago—that Baker remains binding precedent ‘unless repudiated by subsequent Supreme Court precedent.’” And, the judge points out, he “cannot see how any ‘doctrinal developments’ at the Supreme Court change the outcome of Baker or permit a lower court to ignore it.”

Indeed, the judge has harsh words for other judges who have struck down state marriage laws: “It takes inexplicable contortions of the mind or perhaps even willful ignorance—this Court does not venture an answer here—to interpret Windsor’s endorsement of the state control of marriage as eliminating the state control of marriage.”

Just so. And if state marriage laws ever make it back to the Supreme Court, this is precisely what the Court should rule. Indeed, Pérez-Giménez highlights what other courts have frequently forgotten about the rationale underlying marriage laws:

"Recent affirmances of same-gender marriage seem to suffer from a peculiar inability to recall the principles embodied in existing marriage law. Traditional marriage is “exclusively [an] opposite-sex institution . . . inextricably linked to procreation and biological kinship.” Traditional marriage is the fundamental unit of the political order. And ultimately the very survival of the political order depends upon the procreative potential embodied in traditional marriage. Those are the well-tested, well-proven principles on which we have relied for centuries. The question now is whether judicial “wisdom” may contrive methods by which those solid principles can be circumvented or even discarded."

Pérez-Giménez thus concludes:

"Baker, which necessarily decided that a state law defining marriage as a union between a man and woman does not violate the Fourteenth Amendment, remains good law. Because no right to same-gender marriage emanates from the Constitution, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico should not be compelled to recognize such unions. Instead, Puerto Rico, acting through its legislature, remains free to shape its own marriage policy. In a system of limited constitutional self-government such as ours, this is the prudent outcome."

As Pérez-Giménez points out, “The people and their elected representatives should debate the wisdom of redefining marriage. Judges should not.” Someone should let President Obama know.

"Fear Not - HE HAS OVERCOME THE WORLD . . . May God give each of us many opportunities to do so! - Stan]
daily_commentary_10_27_14
The craziness in our world should drive us to our knees, but not to fear. And that’s an order from our Captain.

On a recent broadcast, Shepard Smith of Fox News took to task what he called the “hysterical voices” that are spreading fear and panic over Ebola in the United States. After telling viewers that “You should have no concerns about Ebola at all. None. I promise,” he added, “Fear not. Do not listen to the hysterical voices on the radio and the television or read the fear-provoking words online. The people who say and write hysterical things are being very irresponsible."

“Fear not.” Now whether he was aware that he was quoting scripture or not, that’s what he was doing. God and His messengers uttered those words to God’s people at least eighty times in the Bible. In fact, by some estimates, “fear not” and variations such as “be not afraid” are the most often-repeated commands in all of Scripture. That’s fitting because it also might be the most transgressed-against command, especially in modern life

We all know the expression “sex sells.” But it’s also true that fear sells, especially among the middle-aged and the elderly. If you can stand it, try watching an afternoon worth of commercials and take note of how many of them appeal to fear and anxiety that we have over, well, everything: our health, our family’s future, our finances, and, especially in the run-up to the November elections, our national security, special interest groups and our very way of life.

And it isn’t only the ads: The reason for what Smith called the “hysterical voices” is that television networks and other media outlets know that fear and panic are good for business.

Now I’m not saying that there aren’t things in the world today to be concerned about—of course there are. Besides Ebola, we’ve got ISIS and the collapse of order in the Middle East, home-grown terrorism, the decay of decency, growing restrictions on religious liberty—and for some, simply putting food on the table.

But make no mistake, the media know that a frightened audience is one that will stay tuned-in for every scrap or morsel of news, no matter how fragmentary or out-of-context it might be.

I wish I could say that Christians are immune to this kind of fear and are innocent of the sin of fear-mongering. But we’re not. In fact, let me be honest with you: While we would never intentionally stoke fear among our listeners, one of the hardest things we do at BreakPoint is attempt to strike a balance between telling folks the unvarnished truth about the challenges that Christians face and avoiding giving them a reason to be fearful and to despair. And on behalf of Eric and all of our team, at any of those times that we’ve failed to strike that balance, we apologize to you and we repent before God.

As Christians, we ought to know better than to fear, because we know how the story of the world—and our story—ends. It’s an ending beautifully summed up by Thomas Howard in his book, “Christ the Tiger. In which he reminds us that our Lord announces that he “[makes] all things new” and does “what cannot be done.”

Here’s a passage from Howard’s book: God “[restores] the years that the locusts and worms have eaten . . . the years you have drooped away upon your crutches and in your wheel-chair . . .  the symphonies and operas which your deaf ears have never heard, and the snowy massif your blind eyes have never seen, and the freedom lost to you through plunder and the identity lost to you because of calumny and the failure of justice. . .” And, in an awe-inspiring act of grace, God restores “the good which [our] own foolish mistakes have cheated [us] of.”

How do we know this is true? Because He raised his only-begotten Son from the dead. He destroyed sin and death, and in so doing, demonstrated, to quote Howard again, “the Love of which all other loves speak, the Love which is joy and beauty, and which you have sought in a thousand streets and for which you have wept and clawed your pillow.”

This is the Good News that not only overcomes fear, but for those who have heard it, it renders fear absurd. One of the greatest gifts we can offer an increasingly-fearful world is to be hopeful, to proclaim the good news, and more importantly, to live as if it were true. So, brothers and sisters, fear not. He has risen. Indeed.

"Voting and Christians" - Posted on October 1, 2014 by Dr. Jerry Newcombe; http://www.truthimpact.me/index.php/2014/10/voting-christians/?utm_source=TruthInAction&utm_campaign=493f1d8469-10_7_14_October_eIMPACT&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_67fb03e2fb-493f1d8469-294381373#.VEmYJCJ4oRk [AS I SEE IT: As this article makes clear, Christians are called by God to be good citizens and to participate in the election of leaders who will most likely uphold public based on Biblical truths. Because of this, it is frustrating to me that on average these days, only about 1/4 of Christians are registered and actually vote. When we could  be one of the most effective voting segments of our society and we neglect our responsibility to God, country, and future generations, I believe evangelical Christians - by their abdication to those who would not uphold Biblical values - sin against God. Personally, I lay a lot of the responsibility that this happens at the feet of pulpits that remain silent about elections. (I can't remember in 41 years as a Christ EVER hearing ANY pulpit simple prayer for people to vote wisely. How even that kind of prayer can be branded "political" drives me crazy!)  - Stan]

Do values voters still matter? Those who care about sanctity of life? Those who favor traditional marriage? Those who care about religious liberty? Those who believe in fiscal responsibility? Those who care about the wrong direction in which our nation is headed?

Is it possible that part of the reason the country is in such a mess right now is because for too long, too many Christians have abandoned their role as good citizens?

One of my favorites of all Dr. Kennedy’s quotes on this subject is: I remember 20 years ago a Christian said to me, “You don’t really believe that Christians should get active in politics do you?” And I said, with tongue in cheek, “Why, of course not, we ought to leave it to the atheists. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have anything to complain about. And we’d really rather complain than do something, wouldn’t we?”

Jesus called us to be “salt” and “light” in our society. He told us we should render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. We are to obey the government (unless it causes us to sin). At the very least, in carrying out our civic duty, we should vote.

Not only should we vote, but we should vote our godly values. We should know where the candidates stand—especially on the vital values issues.

I have long felt that if a candidate is “pro-choice” (a code phrase for pro-abortion and pro-death), it reveals much more than their stand on just that one issue. If a candidate cannot get this issue right—especially in our day, with advanced sonograms documenting the humanity of the unborn—what else can he or she not get right? Mother Teresa rightly noted, “And if we accept that a mother can kill her own child, how can we tell others not to kill?”

We should consider where candidates stand on traditional marriage. Marriage was God’s idea, not government’s. He created the institution of the family before He created the church or the state. Who are we to redefine what makes a marriage?

Where do the politicians stand on religious liberty? We know that many, if not most, of those who initially settled America came here for the sake of religious liberty. Today, that freedom is in jeopardy.

We need to ask, what types of judges will these politicians give us? Those that promote sin? Or those that would uphold justice and the rule of law? The Bible says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34 nkjv).

Jesus is Lord over all, including the realm of politics. As the Dutch theologian Abraham Kuyper once said, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!

In America, because we elect our government representatives and officials, it has been said that we get the kind of government we deserve. Therefore, as Christians we have a duty to vote. What kind of country do we want to leave to our children and grandchildren? At the very least, it is imperative we vote and that we do so according to Christian principles.

Granted, Jesus Christ is not on the ballot. Nonetheless, if we do a little research (or avail ourselves of the research done for us), we find there are often huge differences between the candidates when comparing where they stand on the issues that matter to God.

Evangelicals and conservative Catholics swung the election of 2010. They showed up. In fact, they showed up in record numbers. According to a survey by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, “self-identified evangelicals” were the “largest single constituency” going to the polls for that election, representing 29 percent of those who voted. How did they vote? Seventy-eight percent voted for candidates who were pro-life, pro-family, and pro-limited government. Ralph Reed, who was the president of the Christian Coalition in its 1990s heyday, founded and leads the Faith and Freedom Coalition. He said of that election, “People of faith turned out in the highest numbers in a midterm election we have ever seen, and they made an invaluable contribution to the historic results.”

Thus, values voters can make a huge difference in elections—when we show up. Reed said there is a lesson for all politicians in the 2010 midterm election: “… [T]hose who ignore or disregard social conservative voters and their issues do so at their own peril.”

When Christians show up, we win. When we don’t show up, we lose. By not voting, we do vote. We just vote in a way contrary to our professed Christian values.
