#2327 (5/31) "1500 'Missing' Children - Let’s Talk about the Real Problem"

"1500 'MISSING' CHILDREN - LET'S ALK ABOUT THE  REAL PROBLEM"by John Stonestreet and David Carlson, Breakpoint.org, May 31, 2018; http://www.breakpoint.org/2018/05/breakpoint-1500-missing-children/
You may have heard the government has lost 1,500 kids who crossed the border illegally. That’s not really the case, and it misses the real outrage.

The most-discussed story in the news recently has been about the 1500 “missing” children. Twitter hashtags such as “#WhereAreTheChildren” and “#MissingChildren” were created and used by the right and the left to express outrage. There’s only two problems… first, many have misunderstood what’s going on. And second, that confusion has obscured the real outrage: how our government is treating vulnerable families.
The 1,500 missing children story comes from the Senate testimony of HHS official Steven Wagner. He told senators that the Office of Refugee Resettlement “had lost track of 1,475 children . . . who had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border on their own . . . and subsequently were placed with adult sponsors in the United States.”
It was a startling admission. But then, the story was conflated with an announcement by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that, in the case of families crossing the border illegally, children would be separated from their parents. Here are Sessions exact words, “If you don’t want your child separated, then don’t bring them across the border illegally. It’s not our fault that somebody does that.” Thus, the popular version of the story became that the government had taken nearly 1,5,00 kids from their parents and then, somehow, lost them.

But in reality, that’s not what happened. There are two different stories here about two different groups of children.
The 1,475 kids Wagner spoke of were part of a large group of unaccompanied minors from Central America who came to the U.S. border starting in 2014. Those admitted to the U. S were turned over to the Office for Refugee Resettlement who, in turn, released approximately 90 percent of them into the custody of relatives. The rest were placed in the care of non-related sponsors.
One thousand four hundred seventy-five of these minors did not respond to recent attempts to be contacted. As the former head of the Office for Refugee Resettlement explained to NPR, there’s nothing nefarious going on here. The most likely scenario is that the children or their sponsors feared deportation. They don’t want to be contacted.

Of course, it would be better to know where these kids are, but this story is really about the strange inefficiencies of government. The other story, which is far more important and has been confused with this one, is that our government has made separating children from their parents part of immigration policy. As I explained a few months ago, “For the past year, officials at the Department of Homeland Security are considering separating detained families as a means to discourage migrants from entering the country.”
It’s now beyond the consideration stage. Families that cross the border illegally today run the risk of having their children taken away. And I will repeat this, too: reasonable people can disagree about contentious issues like immigration, the number of asylum seekers we should admit and under what criteria we grant asylum. But separating children from parents is cruel, unless the child is in danger.

If a family has entered the U.S. illegally and has no legal right to be here, then deport them expeditiously. If we lack the resources to do this, then we need to re-allocate the resources we have. But weaponizing familial bonds to deter people from trying to enter the United States is completely unacceptable.

Through this practice, our government is showing disregard for the centrality of family—or at least some people’s families. Christians have a unique responsibility and ability to speak up. We’ve got a voice that could change this particular policy. Call your representatives in Congress. Write the White House. We can have common sense immigration policy, without cruelty. And no hashtag is required.

RESOURCES Be sure you have all the facts, then use your voice to speak up. As John said, separating children from their families is cruel. We can make a difference by presenting our concerns to the officials who put immigration policies in place.

American Pastor Andrew Brunson
May 16th - [from the American Center for Law and Justice] "It's an outrageous miscarriage of justice. Pastor Andrew's sham trial just got worse. The head Turkish judge in his trial basicallyy told American Pastor Andrew Brunson that none of his witnesses will be allowed to testify on his behalf. He was thrown back in prison and his trial is again being delayed until July 18th! "
May 8 :(Yesterday, the pastor's trial resumed.) "It's an absolute outrage.Turkey is playing political games with an innocent pastor's life. After the second day of trial - which came after a 3-week delay from the first day of trial - the panel of judges has just thrown American Pastor Andrew Brunson back into prison - delaying the trial again. This time, more than 70 days - until July 18th. Yesterday's hearing, which lasted nearly 12 grueling hours, was more of the same absurd antics. The first two witnesses were once again "secret." They had no firsthand knowledge about any of their testimony; it was all completely hearsay and conjecture. In fact, all 7 witnesses testified that they had not personally seen or heard Pastor Andrew do anything. It's a complete and utter sham. Pastor Andrew is innocent. This isn't a real trial - it's a show trial".
"We must keep maximum pressure on Turkey. 66 U.S. Senators and 50 Members of the European Parliament have sent letters to Turkey's President demanding Pastor Andrew's release. There are even calls now for sanctions to be brought against Turkey by the international community."

"FLOCKING TO TEND TO OUR NATION'S SPIRTIUAL NEEDS" | Travis Weber | InsideSources.com;http://www.sun-sentinel.com/opinion/fl-op-elected-officials-chaplain-debate-20180523-story.html [AS I SEE IT: We need to pray regularly that our chaplains - whether serving the military or our nation's leaders - will not be restricted in their work by atheist and other groups opposed to them. They - and our service men and women - need to have the freedom to practice and share their faith freely. - Stan]
President Trump greets U.S. Army Chaplain Corps Lieutenant Colonel Dawud Abdul-Aziz Agbere, Rabbi Levi Shemtov of the Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington, and Archbishop of Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl during an event to mark the National Day of Prayer on May 3. (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

In July 1950, during the Battle of Taejon early in the Korean War, enemy forces cut off and trapped a number of wounded U.S. troops who could no longer move across the difficult terrain. One Army chaplain, Herman Felhoelter, provided physical and spiritual care even as North Korean soldiers approached. After ordering the medic assisting him to flee, the chaplain continued to minister to the wounded up until the moment he was shot along with his men.

Felhoelter’s story is only one among many throughout the distinguished history of our military chaplaincy. For 247 years, the U.S. Army has provided for chaplains in order to facilitate the free exercise of religion by those serving in our armed forces — such as those who lay wounded and dying on the Korean Peninsula that day. Who knows what spiritual care and comfort they drew from Chaplain Felhoelter as they took what they likely knew were their last breaths?

While closer to home and removed from such daily reminders of our mortality, the chaplaincies of the U.S. House and Senate — and other bodies of government — are no less essential. Our elected officials at all levels and of all parties are constantly being called upon to make very difficult decisions, and they need spiritual wisdom that chaplains can help provide.

An account known as the Judgment of Solomon describes the delicate wisdom required of government officials. The Book of 1 Kings tells of two mothers (each with a baby of their own) who came to King Solomon. One baby had died, and the remaining baby was being claimed by both women as their own. Solomon directed that this baby be divided in half, with each woman receiving an equal portion. When one woman cried out in protest and asked that the baby be given to the other, Solomon realized that she was the living baby’s mother.

Such wisdom in ascertaining the truth is incredibly valuable. We should encourage our elected officials to seek it. Chaplains can help them find it.

Still, some doubt whether religion should be in our public life. Skeptics should look to accounts like that of a former bank robber and the FBI agent who arrested him, a story that reveals a friendship and reconciliation that only happened because faith played a role in the criminal justice system. When agent Richard Beasley showed up at John Ponder’s home the day after he was released from prison to let him know he had been praying for him, he found out that Ponder had actually come to faith in prison. The men went on to become good friends, and Ponder now runs the Hope for Prisoners ministry to help prisoners transitioning back into society.

Despite its obvious benefits, some still suggest that religion in public life is somehow vaguely improper, or unconstitutional. They reiterate claims like “church-state separation is the law of the land.” Yet this assertion is simply inaccurate. There is no legally required “separation” of faith from the public square, at least not in any broadly applicable way that could justify such a statement.

In the face of the overwhelming benefit of religion in public life, it is inevitable that the “separation” argument will be revealed for the foolishly unworkable argument it is. Our Navy servicemembers sing the Navy hymn, “Eternal Father,” to call for God’s help on the seas; must we declare that to be “unconstitutional” too?
When the government calls service men and women away from home and requires them to serve our nation around the world, it has a special duty to provide for their spiritual care. This is one of the reasons that even under today’s increasingly far-fetched judicial interpretations of the First Amendment, the military chaplaincy is upheld — it is no Establishment of religion, and the Free Exercise Clause actually requires it.

Members of Congress are also called away to our nation’s capital for much of the year. While they are not deployed on an aircraft carrier, they are often separated from their families and hometowns at length. This makes caring for their spiritual needs a heightened responsibility. In addition, they should be able to call for spiritual wisdom for the decisions they face — regardless of their party or political views.

Military service members rely upon chaplains for spiritual strength and comfort. Shouldn’t we allow our elected officials the freedom to do the same?

PRAYER MATTERS:
"To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world." - Karl Barth; "Prayer is inviting God into a seemingly impossible situation and trusting/resting in His love and grace to accomplish His perfect will in His perfect time and for His greatest glory. Intercession is the one of the great privileges AND responsibility for EVERY believer." - Stan

“INTERCESSORS ARE THE RUDDER” – A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT - Wanda Alger, June 28th, 2017; https://www.getamericapraying.com/blog/
I was recently given a word by my good friend, Bill Yount. His word greatly encouraged me as an intercessor. Working for Intercessors for America, I soon realized it was not just a word for me, but for all who have been praying for our nation, wondering if their prayers are truly making any difference. Bill told me, “I kept seeing you as a small rudder on a huge ship. Hidden, but giving guidance. Although it seemed slow it was turning the whole ship. Patience was needed to see the impact of your…ministry. I sense the Lord saying, ‘Don’t jump ship! I’ve made you the rudder!’ ” I was immediately touched in my spirit by this encouragement, knowing that our seemingly small place in prayer was having a great impact.
James 3:4 talks about the power of a small rudder to steer a large ship. In this scripture about the power of our tongue, consider the power of prophetic intercession! In the Forerunner Commentary on this verse we read, “…rudders manipulate the course of immense ocean vessels with a slight movement of a pilot’s hand. Since it is underwater and aft, the rudder of a ship does its work UNSEEN. A passenger is ignorant of its movements most of the time. Yet, when it is in proper working order, the rudder holds more power over the ship than the wind. The wind will blow, toss, even destroy the ship’s rigging, but the rudder guides the ship exactly where it directs.”
This is God’s promise to the intercessors in this hour of national turbulence. Don’t stop praying! Your prayers have great power to turn the ship! Continue praying, interceding, and discerning the workings and movements of the Holy Spirit, being faithful to God’s commands. As we come together to declare God’s faithfulness, this nation will, once again, head in the direction that God intends. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Regardless of the winds of adversity and the fires of the enemy, God’s people have a power that cannot be matched. Let us join in faith and continue to pray and speak of God’s faithfulness in order to bring God’s people and this nation into the fullness of God’s plans. Note this additional encouragement from God’s word:
Colossians 2:15 – “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (ESV).
Psalm 33:8-11 – “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.

STANDING STRONG THROUGH THE STORM - OpenDoorsUSA.org
At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.  2 Tim.y 4:16
SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO SUFFER
The Apostle Paul knew exactly what it was like to be alone, to be deserted by all who called themselves “brothers” and “sisters.” A former colleague who has done considerable travel among the persecuted says, “It is hard to believe that Christians are the largest persecuted group in the world today. But it is even more difficult to believe that this is so seldom mentioned in our gatherings and church services. More Christians know the names of their favorite actors than their fellow believers who are in prison.”
He continues, “With every trip something in my heart breaks as I hear the echoes of suffering:
I remember the echoes of an Egyptian mother as she shared how her young boy was stuck in a haystack because she refused to deny Jesus.
I remember the sounds of weeping as fellow students in Indonesia shared how Sariman, their co-student, was hacked to death.
I remember the cries of anguish as we walked from church to church that was burned to the ground on the island of Lombok.
I remember the tears of Rebecca in Iran as she showed the picture of her father who was stabbed to death for sharing the gospel.
I remember the voice of Pastor Daniel in Vietnam as he shared how he was chained to the ground for six months.
I remember the fear of Grace from Sudan as she shared how her church was attacked and her friend was shot through the head.
Oh, I remember the cries of Caleb in Eritrea as he shared with tears how two dear friends were executed in front of him because of their faith.
And I remember the tears of Joy in the southern Philippines as she shared how her fiancé was shot to death in their church in Mindanao.
But, most all, I remember the deafening sounds of silence every time I return home.
RESPONSE
How can I be silent today? How can I not speak on behalf of those who suffer? How can I desert those that belong to the same body that I belong to and who desperately need the encouragement of my intervention on their behalf?
PRAYER
Lord, broaden my awareness of the needs of my suffering brothers and sisters. May I not be known for my silence.

#2325 (5/29) :" ‘Purge Against Christians’ Underway in China as Persecution Ramps Up"

"‘PURGE AGAINST CHISTIANS’ UNDERWAY IN CHINA AS PERSECUTION RAMPS UP"Lindsay Elizabeth, CBN News, 05-22-2018; http://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/2018/may/lsquo-purge-against-christians-rsquo-underway-in-china-as-persecution-ramps-up [AS I SEE IT: Of course, the question has to be asked, "Why this increase in persecution  now?  There has always been persecution of some kind in this communist/atheistic state but something is causing the leadership to act this way at this time. Curious. We can only PRAY that God will use the increased persecution to cause believers to be more passionate in their faith and that, as often happens, non-believers will somehow have their hearts opened to the gospel despite the pressures. What Satan means for evil God always finds a way to bring about greater good. Let's be keeping believers in China in particular prayer at this time. - Stan]

It feels like every day we are hearing more news about China increasing persecution on the Christian community.

Abuses are escalating to unprecedented levels as we’re seeing a full out “purge against Christians” in the Zhejiang province in Eastern China perpetrated by the government, according to organizations monitoring the situation on the ground. ChinaAid, a watchdog group, stated that local governments are stepping up and taking charge of the persecution and outlaw of Christianity.

The government has banned all kinds of religious meetings, meaning no church services, no Bible studies, and no prayer meetings. Not only are they banning religious events but they are calling for people to renounce their faith, particularly in Jesus Christ.

Wenzhou and Shaoxing, two governments in the eastern province have banned religious gatherings, stating that they are a fire hazard, and routinely work to shut down each gathering.
“The police often show up and say that they want to conduct a fire safety inspection. They wander around in the church and arbitrarily point out that some facilities do not meet the standards,” Li, a Hangzhou Christian stated. “Then, they require you to reform in two weeks. Even if you do exactly as they said, they would still deem you ‘unqualified’ in the next inspection. You are helpless,” Li continued.
“The government will ban you no matter what. We no longer organize large-scale gatherings. Only a few people meet up in their own houses, changing location once in a while,” Zhu, another Christian stated. He pointed out that the government will go looking for any small excuse to shut down churches.

Not only are government officials shutting down all religious gatherings, but they are also being pressured at school on their religious beliefs by teachers. In Wenzhou, it’s reported that there is an intense role each teacher plays. “Many schools in Wenzhou are investigating the religious backgrounds of students. Firstly, they find out if the parents are Catholics or Christians. Then, they find out the names, home addresses, and addresses of their workplaces. Finally, they will show up in your house and ask you to renounce your religious belief,” an anonymous Christian shared.

Another anonymous Christian shared that believers in Wenzhou are also targeted at their places of work. They are often targeted by their bosses and have lost wages or bonuses due to their faith. These techniques are used to try to get the Christians to stop going to church.

Wenzhou is traditionally known as a Christian community because of its large population of believers. Many even refer to it as “China’s Jerusalem.” The community has faced intense persecution in the past years, and it is only growing. The atheistic Communist government, which falsely claims to promote freedom of religion, has recently banned Sunday School as well.

Despite the levels of persecution, and the increasing fear of the government, parents are still pushing forward to teach their children the Word of God“Faith comes first, grades come second,” Chen, a parent told Reuters back in December 2017. “Drugs, porn, gambling, and violence are serious problems among today’s youth and video games are extremely seductive,” Chen added. “We cannot be by his side all the time so only through faith can we make him understand [the right thing to do].”

Persecution isn’t something new to the people of WenzhouIn April 2017, the government attempted to install cameras in the local churches, in order to monitor their activities.
“Government officials came to the churches and put up cameras by force. Some pastors and worshipers who didn’t agree to the move were dragged away,” one Christian in Wenzhou stated. “Some people needed to be treated in hospital after fighting the officials.”

#2324 (5/28) "The Greatest Love - Memorial Day Memories"

----------------------------------------------

"THE GREATEST LOVE - MEMORIAL DAY MEMORIES" - by Chuck Colson, Breakpoint.org, May 28, 2018; http://www.breakpoint.org/2018/05/the-greatest-love-2/ [AS I SEE IT: Wow! What a great article; very sobering for anyone in the midst of any Memorial Day festivities, for sure. Hope you'll share it with others. P.S. If you have time, the articles listed after this one are also worth your read on this day.- Stan]
Today on BreakPoint, we hear Chuck Colson’s thoughts on Memorial Day and what he called, “The Greatest Love.” (This commentary originally aired May 26, 2006.)

It was February of 1945—three months before the end of World War II in Europe. Eighteen-year-old Sergeant Joseph George of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, was stationed in Lorient, France. It was evening, and George was preparing to go on patrol. The Americans were hoping to locate landmines buried by the Germans.
Sergeant George had been on patrol duty the night before. As he told his friend Private James Caudill, he was tired—tired and scared. Private Caudill offered to take the patrol on his behalf. He pointed out that, at age 36, he was nearly two decades older than George. He told George—who had already been blown off a torpedoed ship in the English Channel—“You’re young. Go home. Get married. Live a rich, full life.” And then Private Caudill went out on patrol. A few hours later, he was killed by a German sniper.

The actions of Private Caudill echo the values and valor of generations of military men and women we remember today. And they are an example of the sort of behavior we almost take for granted when it comes to our men and women in uniform who fight just wars.

What is a just war? One that is defined as providing a proportionate response to evil, to protect non-combatants, among other considerations. Today, our military men and women around the world are fighting to resist evil. Ridding the world of Islamo-fascism—by just means—is a good and loving act.

This willingness to sacrifice on behalf of our neighbors is why military service is considered such a high calling for Christians—and part of what makes just wars just. Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica puts his discussion of just war in his chapter on charity—the love of God and neighbor. John Calvin agreed; he called soldiering justly a “God-like act,” because “it imitates God’s restraining evil out of love for His creatures.”

A world in which free nations refuse to fight just wars would be a world where evil is unchecked and where the strong would be free to prey on the weak—as we are now seeing in Darfur.

Our soldiers’ willingness to defend the defenseless around the world makes me proud to be an American. Their willingness to lay down their lives is a reflection of how the Christian worldview has influenced our society, which is why American soldiers, by the way, are welcomed all over the world, as historian Stephen Ambrose wrote, while soldiers from other cultures are feared.

So what of Sgt. Joseph George? He returned safely home. He married, fathered five sons. One of them—Princeton Professor Robert George—is a good friend of mine. He’s devoted much of his life to fighting the moral evils of our time: abortion, embryo-destructive research, and efforts to redefine marriage in a way that would destroy it.

In John 15:13, Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this, that [he] lay down his life for his friends.” The story of Private Caudill and Sergeant George makes one realize more deeply what a tremendous gift this is. It’s why the George family has remembered Private Caudill in prayers for sixty-one years.

Today, Memorial Day, we ought to remember the sacrifices of all the Private Caudills in all the wars Americans have fought—and we should pray for those who are still in the field—laying down their lives for each other, for us, and for the freedom of strangers. That’s a very Christian thing to do.

 [italics and colored emphasis mine]

The Greatest Love: Memorial Day MemoriesTake time today, as Chuck urged us, to remember those who dies for our freedoms and to pray for those who still serve in harm’s way. And today on a very special episode of the BreakPoint podcast, we’ve gathered a collection of BreakPoint Memorial Day commentaries Chuck Colson delivered over the years. Please, go to BreakPoint.org to tune in, and be sure to subscribe to the BreakPoint podcast.
What Chuck recommended back in 2006 is still relevant on this Memorial Day, 2018–we should remember those who have sacrificed, who have laid down their lives for our freedoms. And pray for those who are part of our armed services protecting our borders and our freedoms. Listen to a few more of Chuck’s thoughts on Memorial Day in today’s BreakPoint podcast by clicking on the link in our Resources section.

#2323 (5/27) SUNDAY SPECIAL: "The Pandemic of Loneliness - The Church Has the Answer"

"THE PANDEMIC OF LONELINESS - THE CHURCH HAS THE ANSWER" by Eric Metaxas and Stan Guthrie, Breakpoint.org, May 24, 2018; http://www.breakpoint.org/2018/05/breakpoint-pandemic-loneliness/ [AS I SEE IT: Yes, the church does provide a place of safe community where we can feel safe to be vulnerable. However, there are times when I've still struggled (and I suspect have others) to find deep relationships in the midst of good fellowship in the body of Christ. The Church is still the answer to loneliness but it may at times fail to meet the needs of some. - Stan]
Do you feel lonely? Join the crowd. Loneliness has reached pandemic levels—but there is hope.

It’s become a truism: Never have we been more “connected” as Americans—and never have we felt lonelier. According to a nationwide study of 20,000 people by the Cigna health insurance company, nearly half of respondents say they feel alone or left out always or some of the time. Reporting on the research, National Public Radio states, “Fifty-six percent reported they sometimes or always felt as if the people around them ‘are not necessarily with them.’” Forty percent said, “they lack companionship,” and their “relationships aren’t meaningful,” and that they experience feelings of isolation.

Using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Cigna found that “most Americans are considered lonely.” The average score on this scale is 44, with higher numbers indicating more loneliness; but this social malady isn’t distributed evenly across the age groups. Somewhat counter-intuitively, it seems that the younger you are, the lonelier you feel.
The so-called “Greatest Generation”—those aged 72 and older—is the least lonely group, scoring an average of 38.6 on the Loneliness Scale, followed by Baby Boomers, then Millennials. The loneliest group is also the youngest—Generation Z, those born in the mid-1990s to early 2000s, with an average score of 48.3.

Now it’s easy for us older folks to point the finger at social media for the rise in loneliness, and we may have a point. Back in 2017, psychologist Jean Twenge of San Diego State University suggested that increased screen and social media time may have caused a jump in depression and suicide among American young people. There’s a world of difference, after all, between a virtual community and a real one. Writing in CT Women, Enuma Okoro observes that “the false sense of intimacy created in the virtual world fails to satisfy people’s real needs for knowing others and being known by others.” She adds, “After all, being lonely is not necessarily about a-lone-ness, but about lack of intimate, meaningful connection.”

Loneliness quite literally is hazardous to your health, leading to increased levels of depression, drug addiction, and suicide. Which is why, as my colleague John Stonestreet has mentioned on “The Point,” the British government has now established a “minister of loneliness.”

Starting in the Garden, we human beings were created for community under God’s loving care, and when we don’t get it, bad things happen. We’ll attempt to fill our restless, lonely hearts with whatever is nearest at hand. As Augustine of Hippo stated so perceptively, “Sin comes when we take a perfectly natural desire or longing or ambition and try desperately to fulfill it without God.”

One lesson for the church is obvious: We must remember we are one Body in Jesus Christ. No member goes it alone. In a culture in which everyone seems “connected” doesn’t even know their next-door neighbors, Christians are members one of another. When one member suffers, we all suffer. When one of us rejoices, we all rejoice. As the Bible says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2). That is our calling.

Do we always experience this kind of soul-satisfying fellowship? Sadly, no. The good news is that we can help one another grow in this holy task. Okoro says, “As Christians, we’re called to train one another in the theological virtue of caritas, as understood by Thomas Aquinas as friendship with God that ultimately leads to deepened friendship with one another . . . [cultivating] more genuine depths of safe intimacy with one another not merely for our own sakes but for the sake of the one who first called us friends and never sent his disciples out alone.”
And when we do, our Christian faith can become very attractive indeed to our lonely neighbors, young and old alike.

RESOURCES We have a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ to those who are lonely, not just in our own churches, but in our neighborhoods and communities. So take that next step and, as Eric has suggested, embrace Christ’s call to cultivate and deepen friendships with those around you.

#2322 (5/26) PRO-LIFE SAT: "Planned Parenthood Abortion Biz Closes 22 Programs in Africa After Trump Defunds It"

"PLANNED PARENTHOOD ABORTION BIZ CLOSES 22 PROGRAMS IN AFRIFA AFTER TRUMP DEFUNDS IT"Micaiah Bilger, MAY 24, 2018| ttp://www.lifenews.com/2018/05/24/planned-parenthood-abortion-biz-closes-22-programs-in-africa-after-trump-defunds-it/ [AS I SEE IT: Whenever you hear about Planned Parenthood being denied funds, you can immediately think of it as countless numbers of babies being saved from abortion. Yes!!! - Stan]
The international arm of Planned Parenthood drastically cut back its programs this year in Africa after President Donald Trump prohibited international funding to pro-abortion groups.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) was one of just four groups that refused to comply with the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits taxpayer funding to international groups that promote or provide abortions. More than 700 others still provide important international aid without promoting the killing of unborn babies. The pro-life policy has benefited mothers and babies across the world.

Reuters reports IPPF shut down 22 programs in sub-Saharan Africa as a result of the policy, and several more are slated to close this summer. Caroline Kwamboka, senior advocacy manager for Planned Parenthood in Africa, told Reuters that they hope major donors will make up the lost funding. The report lists the Hewlett Foundation, the Waterloo Foundation, the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation among the abortion chain’s wealthiest donors.

Marie Stopes International, a British abortion chain, also shut down several of its programs in Africa as a result of the funding cuts.

The two pro-abortion groups received millions of American tax dollars under President Barack Obama’s administration to push abortions in Africa. Most African countries prohibit the killing of unborn babies in abortions.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation performed more than 1 million abortions in 2016, an increase of 13.5 percent over 2015, and received more than $27 million in U.S. government grants in 2015-2016. Under the Obama administration, Marie Stopes International also received U.S. taxpayer funding. Like Planned Parenthood in America, Marie Stopes has a shoddy reputation, with one recent report showing about 400 botched abortions in a two-month period.
Marie Stopes has been accused of doing hundreds of illegal, unsafe abortions in Africa. And late last year, parents and community leaders in Kitui, Kenya were outraged after learning that Marie Stopes workers allegedly came into their children’s school and implanted long-lasting contraceptive devices into girls as young as 14 without their parents’ knowledge or consent.
Abortion activists have complained that the Trump administration policy has been devastating for women in Africa, but the only real damage has been to pro-abortion groups. Both IPPF and Marie Stopes could continue to receive USAID to provide contraception and life-saving health care; all they must do is agree to stop aborting unborn babies.

Of the more than 700 groups that receive USAID, only four refused to comply, according to a federal government report. That is a compliance rate of 99.5 percent.

The Mexico City Policy was in place during the entirety of the Bush administration, but Obama rescinded it during his first week in office. Named for a 1984 population conference where President Ronald Reagan initially announced it, the policy made it so family planning funds could only go to groups that would agree to not do abortions or lobby foreign nations to overturn their pro-life laws.
During his first week in office, Trump reinstated and expanded the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits taxpayer funding to groups that promote or provide abortions overseas.

#2321 (5/25) "NFL Gets off the Sidelines in Anthem Fight"

"NFL GETS OFF THE SIDELINES IN THE ANTHEM FIGHT" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, May 24, 2018; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20180524/nfl-anthem [AS I SEE IT: Some say that the national anthem controversy is a lot over nothing significant. But I think it's like someone writing graffiti on a public wall. It's the "little things" that helps to unravel the things that bind us together as a nation, as Americans. You just don't let that happen at the smallest level or things only become worse It led me to NOT watch a single pro football game all year (except, I admit, the last moments of the Super Bowl) and I hope this latest move by the league ends the disrespect because I prefer to get back to following my favorite teams. (: - Stan]
The NFL season hasn't started, but the league is doing its best to make sure they still have fans when it does! After a year-long controversy that cost him fans, advertisers, and ratings, Commissioner Roger Goodell finally decided to step in and stop the bleeding. A new anthem policy will take effect when the NFL kicks off in September -- and not a moment too soon.

Patriotism, the kind quarterback Colin Kaepernick flouted when he took a knee during the Star Spangled Banner, is no longer optional. "This season, all league and team personnel shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem. Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room until after the Anthem has been performed," Goodell said in a statement Wednesday. After a bruising year for the NFL brand, Goodell did what fans had been clamoring for: put an end to the political protests that were rocking his sport.

Teams that don't comply, NFL officials say, will be hit where it hurts -- in the wallet. "A club will be fined by the League if its personnel are on the field and do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem," the NFL warns. Like most Americans, President Trump has watched this year-long controversy unfold with disdain. Last September, he asked fans to send the League a message by turning off the game. "Things will stop," he predicted. "Just pick up and leave. Pick up and leave. Not the same game anymore anyway..."

Trump got the League's attention alright. Millions of fans changed channels, ended their subscriptions, or stopped buying tickets altogether. At games, boos rained down where cheers once were. And suddenly, the biggest storyline on NFL Sunday had nothing to do with the scores. "Today's decision by the @NFL is a win for the fans, a win for @POTUS, and a win for America," tweeted Vice President Mike Pence. "Americans can once again come together around what unites us -- our flag, our military, and our National Anthem. Thank you NFL. #ProudToStand."

President Trump, who scored the biggest victory in America's showdown with the $14 billion league, agreed that NFL owners did the right thing. But, like a lot us, doesn't think people should have to be prodded into showing their nation respect. "I don't think people should be staying in the locker rooms, but still I think it's good," he said in an exclusive interview on Fox News. "You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn't be playing, you shouldn't be there. Maybe you shouldn't be in the country."

FRC's Lt. General Jerry Boykin, who knows plenty of soldiers who wished they could stand for anything again, said, "I think it's sad that any American today is not willing to stand in honor of the flag," but, he went on, "I'm glad to see the NFL addressing the issue." The American Legion, whose veterans served so that these players had the freedom to disrespect their country, applauded the NFL's move -- wishing, like most Americans, that it had never been necessary. "While the issues that led to the controversy remain and deserve continued national dialogue, we hope that all Americans would stand united as one under our national symbol. Our flag and anthem belong to all Americans. While our country is not perfect, it remains the world's greatest beacon of freedom. We all have to work together to resolve our differences."

Whether the NFL has learned its lesson about wading into the culture wars remains to be seen. What it has learned is not to tangle with proud Americans -- and the man working to make their country great again, Donald Trump. "This is a notable win for conservatives," Axios insisted, one that will hopefully make businesses think twice about mocking our values. "Trump outsmarted the Resistance," the Federalist pointed out, "but that doesn't seem to take much work. The Resistance has framed the issue so cleverly that they are on one side and Trump is on the other -- along with the national anthem, the flag, and military veterans." That's a fight no smart entrepreneur wants to pick.

Meanwhile, if there is a bright side to this controversy, it's that Americans reminded the corporate elite just how painful their extremist politics can be. In business -- as in elections -- your choices matter. There's no downside to speaking up -- or, in this case, standing up and tuning out. Even one person can make a powerful difference.

#2320 (5/24) "Dispelling False Narratives in the Wake of the Santa Fe Tragedy"

"DISPELLING FALSE NARRATIVES IN THE WAKE OF THE SANTA FE TRAGEDY"Amy Swearer / @AmySwearer / May 22, 2018 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2018/05/22/dispelling-false-narratives-in-the-wake-of-the-santa-fe-tragedy/
A student at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, killed eight students and two teachers in a mass shooting last week. (Photo: Jonathan Bachman/Reuters/Newscom)

Last week, a teenager stole his father’s shotgun and .38-caliber revolver, smuggled them into his Santa Fe, Texas, high school under a trench coat, and proceeded to murder 10 innocent people before surrendering to police. It’s another devastating reminder that human beings are capable of inflicting horrific pain on each other, and that while the nation’s schools have become progressively safer over the last 30 years, there is still much more that can be done to prevent future tragedies.

This shooting has also helped perpetuate gun control and school safety narratives that are sliding further from the truth than ever before. It is important that these false narratives be corrected—we do not honor those who lost their lives by calling for policies that won’t prevent future tragedies because they aren’t based on facts.

Here are three of those narratives.

1. See, armed guards are ineffective at preventing school shootings.
Some gun control advocates have repeated this argument after learning that Santa Fe High School had two armed school resource officers on duty during the shooting. But this argument fails to account for the fact the officers’ timely response almost certainly prevented further loss of life in this particular incident.
Although 30 minutes elapsed between the moment the shooter opened fire and the moment he laid down his firearms and surrendered to police, it’s unclear how long he was actively shooting and how long he was holed up in a classroom contemplating suicide.
What is clear, though, is that, in the words of Galveston County Judge Mark Henry, the response of the school police officers was “very critical” to ensuring the carnage was not even worse. One of the officers, John Barnes, was shot in the arm during the confrontation, and at the very least served to distract the shooter from his rampage.

Further, even if we considered armed guards to have been a complete failure at Santa Fe High School—a highly dubious proposition given the information detailed above—there are numerous other instances of armed guards indisputably saving many lives in similar scenarios.
Take, for instance, the events at an Illinois high school just days before the Santa Fe shooting, where an armed school resource officer shot and subdued a former student who opened fire at a graduation practice. Because of the officer’s quick response, not a single innocent person was injured. In the weeks after the tragic murder of 17 individuals at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, where an armed school resource officer failed to respond to the sounds of gunfire, an officer was credited with saving lives at a Maryland high school when he immediately confronted an attacker after he killed one student and wounded another. Similar events occurred at Reynolds High School (Oregon) in 2014, Arapahoe High School (Colorado) in 2013, and Sullivan Central High School (Tennessee) in 2010, just to name a few.

Finally, no one suggests that armed guards can prevent all school deaths any more than having a large police force can prevent all criminal activity. Protecting the nation’s students in the same way we protect concertgoers, celebrities, and politicians means we must utilize a variety of safety measures—only one of which is more armed security at schools.
In this case, there are serious questions about how a student was able to reach a classroom with two firearms—including a less-than-concealable shotgun—under a trench coat without raising suspicion or being otherwise noticed. This could likely be addressed by limiting the number of school entry points and using magnetometers, which a number of schools already use in tandem with armed security.

2. This is why we need commonsense gun control.
Not a single commonly proposed gun control law would have been more effective than existing laws at preventing a teenager—already too young to buy or own firearms—from stealing his father’s legally owned “non-assault weapons,” taking them into a gun-free zone, and murdering 10 innocent people.
This is not an unusual case, either. Measures such as raising the minimum age of firearm purchase, banning so-called “assault weapons” (a made-up term intended to make certain guns sound scary), imposing universal background checks, or mandating waiting periods rarely pose significant hurdles to mass shooters.

School shooters in particular don’t typically use firearms they purchased themselves, but rather they use firearms that they had ready access to from older friends or family members. Raising the minimum age of firearm purchase to 21 not only fails to address the prominent factors in firearm access for school shooters, but also deprives law-abiding young adults of the capacity to adequately exercise their own right to self-defense.

Similarly, school shootings (and mass public shootings generally) are rarely carried out with “assault weapons.” Nor does the use of an “assault weapon” indicate that the incident will have a high casualty count, because semi-automatic rifles are no more or less deadly at close range than other commonly owned firearms. In fact, shotguns cause almost unrivaled devastation to the human body in close-quarter situations. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lkUvixtRVw]
Moreover, the data doesn’t support an assertion that the use of 30-round (“high capacity”) magazines result in higher numbers of casualties than 10-round magazines. The Virginia Tech killer used only two handguns to take twice as many lives as the Parkland killer. He simply brought extra magazines.

Universal background checks and waiting periods similarly address factors irrelevant to the prevention of school shootings, because again, shooters typically access firearms from individuals who already passed background checks and waiting periods.

3. The nation’s students are in more danger than the nation’s soldiers.
The Washington Post helped propagate this narrative with its decision to run the headline: “2018 has been deadlier for schoolchildren than service members.” This story was then retweeted by thousands, and the alleged fact repeated countless more times.
The problem is that it isn’t true.
