#1874 (2/28) "A Nation of Immigrants -- Only If They Assimilate"

"A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS - ONLY IF THEY ASSIMILATE" - Dennis Prager, Feb. 28, 2017; https://townhall.com/columnists/dennisprager/2017/02/28/a-nation-of-immigrants--only-if-they-assimilate-n2291580
I am writing this column in Japan, a country whose crime rate is the lowest among countries with large populations. I asked my Japanese translator, a middle-aged woman, what she thought. "Why is there is so little crime in Japan?" I asked. Without taking a moment to reflect, she responded, "Because we don't allow immigration." Anyone who visits Japan is struck by the ethnic homogeneity of the nation. If you meet a Caucasian, a black or a Hispanic in Japan, you can be all but certain that the person is visiting or studying there, not a citizen.

Likewise in the United States, there is direct correlation between ethnic homogeneity and low levels of violence. According to 2016-2017 data, the four states with the lowest percentages of violence are:
Vermont -- where 95 percent of the population is one race (white).
Maine -- where 95 percent of the population is one race (white).
Wyoming -- where roughly 93 percent of the population is one race (white).
New Hampshire -- where roughly 94 percent of the population is one race (white).

Sweden, which for much of its modern history has had among the world's lowest rates of violent crime, was almost always as homogenous as Japan. Now that it has admitted hundreds of thousands of immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa, it is no longer a homogenous country, and its levels of violence have increased dramatically.

All this leads to a particular rule, which is, in order to maintain a low crime rate and social stability, a country has only two choices: Do not allow immigrants into the country, or allow immigrants into the country, but be certain to assimilate them into the native population as quickly as possible.

The second choice has been America's choice throughout most of its history, and it has been uniquely successful in shaping people from all over the world and from every background into one nation known as Americans. One of America's three fundamental principles has been e pluribus unum, or "out of many" (the other two, as our coinage testifies, are liberty and In God We Trust). And that is precisely what America has done.

But since the 1960s, the left has supplanted e pluribus unum and its national American identity with the antithetical doctrines of diversity and multiculturalism. Diversity and multiculturalism celebrate the national/ethnic identities of the nations from where American immigrants came instead of celebrating the American identity and traditional American values. The result is the beginning of the end of the United States as we have known it since its inception.

The left constantly repeats "we are a nation of immigrants" without citing the other half of that fact -- "who assimilate into America." The left mocks the once-universally held American belief in the melting pot. But the melting pot is the only way for a country composed of immigrants to build a cohesive society.

America was never just "a nation of immigrants." America was always a nation of immigrants who sought to become -- or at least were taught by American public schools and by the general American culture to become -- Americans.

If America becomes a nation of non-assimilating immigrants, or a nation consisting of non-assimilating ethnic, racial and national groups who are already here, it will cease being a glorious idea and become just another nation torn by conflicting interest groups. These various groups will fight one another -- first verbally and then, perhaps, violently (and America will see more and more violence) -- just as France, Sweden and Germany have seen since they began taking in millions of immigrants, many of whom have no intention of becoming Frenchmen, Swedes or Germans.

Contrary to one of the left's more mendacious claims, diversity has not been America's great strength. America's great strength has been forging an American identity out of diversity.

But the left, with its identity politics and commitment to multiculturalism -- as expressed, for example, by ballots in dozens of languages, the proliferation of ethnic studies departments at universities and the allowance of all-black dorms and graduation ceremonies -- is undoing that.

If you want to understand the immigration crisis, just know that because the left has undone the second choice, it has made the first choice -- Japan's choice -- look tenable to many for the first time in American history.

#1873 (2/27) "Ambassador Haley Urges the UN to End its Anti-Israel Bias"

"AMBASSADOR HALEY URGES UN TO END ITS ANTI-ISRAEL BIAS" By Anna Sekulow, ACLJ, Feb. 24, 2017; https://aclj.org/israel/ambassador-haley-urges-the-un-to-end-its-anti-israel-bias
After attending the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council’s monthly meeting on Middle East issues for the first time, newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley delivered strong remarks rebuking the Security Council for the shameful way in which it has operated “month after month, for decades.

“I have to admit, it was a bit strange,” Haley said of the Security Council’s meeting agenda. At the press conference following the meeting, Ambassador Haley pointed directly to the Security Council’s anti-Israel bias, which is compounded by its failure to properly address issues central to its mission of maintaining international peace.“Instead, the meeting focused on criticizing Israel, the one true democracy in the Middle East,” Haley said.

Provoked by the U.N.’s approach, she condemned the way in which the Security Council persistently blasted Israel during the meeting while ignoring pressing issues at hand. “Incredibly, the UN Department of Political Affairs has an entire department devoted to Palestinian affairs,” Haley said. “Imagine that. There is not a division devoted to illegal missile launches from North Korea. There is no division devoted to the world’s number one state sponsor of terror, Iran.”

Ambassador Haley also took note of what was not discussed during the meeting. “The Security Council is supposed to discuss how to maintain international peace and security. But at our meeting on the Middle East, the discussion was not about Hezbollah’s illegal build-up of rockets in Lebanon. It was not about the money and weapons Iran provides to terrorists. It was not about how we defeat ISIS. It was not about how we hold Bashar al-Assad accountable for the slaughter of hundreds and thousands of civilians,” Haley told the press. “No, instead, the meeting focused on criticizing Israel, the one true democracy in the Middle East.”

Undaunted by the Security Council’s approach, Ambassador Haley made it clear that she is determined to halt the U.N.’s anti-Israel bias. “I’m here to say the United States will not turn a blind eye to this anymore,” she said. “I’m here to underscore the ironclad support of the United States for Israel.”

Ambassador Haley’s resolve signifies a repudiation of the prior Administration’s inclination to abandon Israel at virtually every turn. Recall, that in the final days of the Obama presidency, his Administration turned its back on Israel at the U.N. by refusing to veto the anti-Israel U.N. Security Council Resolution 2334. As the ACLJ noted at the time:
“In an act of utter cowardice, President Obama has betrayed Israel. The Obama Administration has reversed longstanding U.S. policy, abandoning our ally Israel at the United Nations Security Council by refusing to utilize its veto to block a one-sided measure aimed at delegitimizing Israel. This dramatic shift in U.S. policy leaves our strongest ally in the region vulnerable. To make matters worse, this cowardly act - under the cover of the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays - comes at a time when the fallout will be left to the incoming Administration. Today's action leaves a key ally exposed and weakens U.S. standing in the world. Our allies deserve better, and the American People deserve more from a President in his final month in office.”

The U.N. is in urgent need of a long overdue wake-up call and Ambassador Haley’s courageous statements confirm that the current Administration is prepared to deliver on its promise to shake things up at the U.N.

PRAY FOR AND SUPPORT JUDGE GORSUCH FOR THE SUPREME COURT
President Trump has nominated Judge Neil GorsuchMoments ago, President Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Judge Gorsuch is an excellent choice to fill the late Justice Antonin Scalia's seat on the Supreme Court. He is a remarkably qualified nominee with a conservative judicial philosophy and a strong track record of upholding the rule of law and the Constitution. Radical obstructionists - dedicated to defeating a constitutional conservative - are already threatening to filibuster Judge Gorsuch. He is supremely qualified. In fact, the Senate unanimously confirmed him as a judge on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. Now it's time for the Senate to do its job and confirm Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court without delay. Learn More About Judge Gorsuch, Supreme Court Nomineehttps://aclj.org/supreme-court/the-senate-must-confirm-judge-gorsuch-to-the-supreme-court?utm_medium=Email&utm_source=ExactTarget&utm_campaign=d-01312017_top-SC_seg-

"One Doctor’s Prescription for Life- MILDRED FAY JEFFERSON" - by: John Stonestreet, Breakpoint.org, February 24, 2017, http://www.breakpoint.org/2017/02/breakpoint-one-doctors-prescription-life/
It’s good for us to remember the heroic faith of those who’ve gone before us. And then to go and do likewise.

Glenn Sunshine is at it again: helping us remember heroes of our Christian faith long forgotten. As I’ve said before on BreakPoint, remembering is vital to the life of the Church.

It’s why the author of Hebrews in chapter 11 of his epistle extolled the faith of figures like Noah and Abraham and Joseph and even Rahab the prostitute. By the time we get to chapter 12, we’re ready to accept the challenge: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses . . . let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” That’s the power of remembering God’s servants who have gone before us. And that’s why Dr. Glenn Sunshine writes his “Christians Who Changed Their World” columns, which are available at our now re-designed BreakPoint.org website.

But Glenn doesn’t focus in on the big names. Instead he introduces us to lesser known but equally significant heroes of the faith. This month, which is by the way Black History Month, Glenn tells us about Mildred Fay Jefferson.

Born in the 1920s in Texas, the daughter of a minister and a school teacher, Mildred wanted to be a doctor from a very early age. She graduated from the local segregated high school at age 15, enrolled in a small black college and eventually made it to Harvard Medical School. In 1951, she became the first African American woman to graduate from that esteemed institution. Then get this: She became the first woman to intern at Boston City Hospital and the first female surgeon at the Boston University Medical Center. She eventually became a professor of surgery at Boston University Medical School.

As Glenn writes, “Coming from the segregated South in an era of intense racism, Dr. Jefferson’s accomplishments as a pioneer for women and blacks in medicine would be cause enough to celebrate her life. Yet today she is most remembered for her tireless work opposing abortion, both as a physician in the Hippocratic tradition and as a Christian.”

It was in 1970 when the American Medical Association proclaimed that it was ethical for doctors to perform abortions wherever it was legal. Dr. Jefferson was outraged by this assault on the Hippocratic Oath and on Judeo-Christian values: “I’m opposed to abortion as a doctor and also because I know it is morally wrong,” she said. “An individual never has the private right to choose to kill for whatever reasons, be they whim, convenience or compulsion. Because I know abortion is wrong, I will use every means available for free people in a free country to see that it is not perpetuated.”

And that’s exactly what she did, touring the country, speaking at public events and on the air, eventually becoming a board member and president of National Right to Life. As Glenn relates, her passion for life was persuasive. In fact, one very well-known politician, a governor who once signed an abortion bill in his state, wrote to her after hearing her on the radio. "“No other issue since I have been in office has caused me to do so much study and soul-searching,” he wrote to Dr. Jefferson. “I wish I could have heard your views before our legislation was passed. You made it irrefutably clear that an abortion is the taking of a human life. I’m grateful to you.”
That letter was signed “Ronald Reagan.”

I do hope you’ll come to BreakPoint.org and read [more] about this amazing woman of faith and defender of life. Click on Glenn Sunshine’s article: “Christians Who Changed Their World: Mildred Fay Jefferson.”

#1871 (2/25) PRO-LIFE SAT: "Planned Parenthood's Pandering Press"

"PLANNED PARENTHOOD'S PANDERING PRESS" Brent Bozell : Feb 22, 2017; https://townhall.com/columnists/brentbozell/2017/02/22/planned-parenthoods-pandering-press-n2288909
Every time you hear the network anchors and reporters act outraged about President Trump calling on "friendly" reporters and the fact that there's something desperately wrong about trying to avoid negative publicity and hostile questions, think of Planned Parenthood.

As with virtually anyone on the left, journalists treat Planned Parenthood as the most sacred of cows. In the last few weeks, from the women's marches through the March for Life and other protests of Planned Parenthood, none of the networks will investigate or even cover the activities of these merchants of death.

They will say that those who are anti-abortion want to defund Planned Parenthood. But they routinely repeat the liberal argument that federal funds don't pay for abortions (never mind the taxpayer-funded abortions under Obamacare). They don't point out the fact that Planned Parenthood is hard-wired into the Democratic Party coalition, and that it reportedly spent about $14 million in PAC money for Democrats in the last cycle.

A recent Quinnipiac University poll asked plainly whether people supported defunding Planned Parenthood. Only 31 percent said yes, and 62 percent said no. Another recent Quinnipiac poll asked about banning abortion at 20 weeks. Forty-six percent said yes, and 46 percent said no.

Planned Parenthood has performed tens of thousands of abortions after 20 weeks. The Guttmacher Institute, previously a Planned Parenthood affiliate, reportedly released data showing that about 18,000 third-trimester abortions are performed ever year. According to this survey, roughly a third of those who believe this ghastly practice should be banned also believe Planned Parenthood should be funded so they can commit these atrocities.

That gap illustrates that Planned Parenthood (through a very cooperative media) effectively brands itself as a generic women's health care provider, not as the McDonald's of abortion. Take its claim that abortion services only account for 3 percent of its procedures. Even liberal fact-checkers like Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post slammed that as misleading. He said: "The organization treats each service -- pregnancy test, STD test, abortion, birth control -- equally. Yet there are obvious differences between a surgical (or even medical) abortion, and offering a urine (or even blood) pregnancy test. These services are not all comparable in how much they cost or how extensive the service or procedure is."

But the networks just parrot the propaganda line. Take NPR anchor Ari Shapiro, who said, "Nationally, Planned Parenthood says it treats 2.5 million patients a year, and abortions make up 3 percent of the services." ABC's "Good Morning America" let a spokeswoman claim that "(Ninety-seven) percent of the services that Planned Parenthood provides are preventive health services."

The networks also give us celebrities reading the sales pamphlet. Actress Scarlett Johansson was quoted by CBS as saying, "For millions of Americans, Planned Parenthood is often the only trustworthy and affordable clinic." Baloney. She might be excused as a fool, but CBS knows better.

These networks are deliberately ignoring what the anti-abortion group Live Action keeps proving: Planned Parenthood is not a hospital. Most of its centers don't offer prenatal care. You don't go there for a mammogram. It is a "sexual health" clinic. Women go there for contraceptives, pregnancy tests and STD tests, and to kill their babies.

On Jan. 24, Live Action posted a video documenting how it contacted 97 Planned Parenthood clinics across 41 of the organization's affiliates where undercover recording is legal under state law, and only five said they offered any form of prenatal care. They don't insure a healthy pregnancy. They terminate pregnancies. And the network coverage? Nonexistent.

In a video posted on Feb. 6, Sue Thayer, a former director of two Planned Parenthood clinics in Iowa, said she encouraged an abortion quota that, if met, would result in staff pizza parties. And the network coverage? Nonexistent.

These are just two of six videos that Live Action has posted in the last few weeks, and they've drawn more than 33 million views. The networks simply won't touch them. They are rigidly doctrinaire in maintaining their Happy News narrative. Nothing that anti-abortion people produce, no matter how solid the reporting, can break through. It's all somehow "alternative facts" and "fake news." And they wonder why the public doesn't trust them.

#1870 (2/24) "Trump Right to Fix Obama’s Unlawful Transgender School Policy"

"TRUMP RIGHT TO FIX OBAMA'S UNLAWFUL TRANSGENDER SCHOOL POLICY"Ryan T. Anderson / February 22, 2017 / http://dailysignal.com/2017/02/22/trump-right-to-fix-obamas-unlawful-transgender-school-policies/
President Donald Trump entrusted Attorney General Jeff Sessions, right during his swearing-in Feb. 9 in the Oval Office, to prepare a directive rescinding President Barack Obama's transgender mandate for public schools. (Photo: Jim LoScalzo/Consolidated/DPA/Newscom)

The Trump administration acted Wednesday night to fix the Obama administration’s unlawful “gender identity” school policy and return authority to parents and teachers in the states.

Civil rights officers in the Department of Justice and the Department of Education issued a joint letter saying the administration was rescinding the policy, which had required schools to allow students who identify as transgender to use the restrooms, locker rooms and similar facilities of their choice—or face loss of federal funds. In the letter, they said the Obama mandate did not show “due regard for the primary role of the states and local school districts” in making education policy.

The Trump administration is doing the right thing in correcting Obama’s unlawful overreach, which imposed a one-sided solution on all 50 states. Parents and teachers in local schools now can work to find win-win solutions that protect the dignity, privacy, and safety of all students.

For years, the Obama administration unilaterally had redefined bans on “sex” discrimination to include “gender identity.” The problem came to a head May 13, when Obama’s Justice and Education departments sent a “Dear Colleague” letter to our nation’s schools, informing them that “both federal agencies treat a student’s gender identity as the student’s sex for purposes of enforcing Title IX,” a 1972 law prohibiting sex discrimination in federally funded schools. With this decree, the Obama administration directed all schools to allow “students to participate in sex-segregated activities and access sex-segregated facilities consistent with their gender identity.” Schools were told they had to allow students access to bathrooms, locker rooms, dorm rooms, and hotel rooms for overnight field trips based entirely on the self-declared gender identities of their students.

On Aug. 21, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor ruled the Obama administration’s attempt to redefine sex was unlawful, and blocked the decree from going into effect. O’Connor held that it “cannot be disputed that the plain meaning of the term sex as used … following passage of Title IX meant the biological and anatomical differences between male and female,” and he placed a nationwide injunction on the administration’s guidance to schools. The Justice Department, under Attorney General Loretta Lynch, appealed this ruling Oct. 20. But on Feb. 10, with Jeff Sessions as the nation’s new attorney general, the Justice Department withdrew that motion for a stay and cancelled the scheduled oral arguments.

The Trump administration rescinded the Obama guidance saying officials would interpret the word “sex” in Title IX to mean “gender identity.” Instead, the administration will allow parents and teachers to work together in local schools to find nuanced solutions that address the needs of everyone.

Wednesday night’s moves signaled a change in position that could have a significant impact on the Justice Department’s controversial Title IX lawsuit against North Carolina’s Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act (known as HB2), which the Trump administration inherited. The actions also could affect a Title IX gender identity case, currently set for oral argument at the Supreme Court next month, that depends in large part on the Department of Education’s position.

Dignity, Privacy, and Safety Concerns
Last week at The Heritage Foundation, a panel of women explained the many policy problems with “gender identity” laws. As one of them said, “when gender identity wins, women always lose.” The panelists—a rape survivor, a lesbian, a feminist activist, a stay-at-home mom, and a conservative—explained how people who identify as transgender should be free to live as they want, but that the law shouldn’t therefore eliminate women-only spaces or redefine what it is to be a woman.
While we must be sensitive to the dignity, privacy, and safety concerns of people who identify as transgender, that is not a reason to ignore the dignity, privacy, and safety concerns of everyone else. Unfortunately, the Obama-era policies were entirely one-sided. They favored the concerns of people who identify as transgender while entirely discounting the concerns of others.
Safe Spaces for Women, a group that “provides survivors of sexual assault with care, support, understanding, and advice,” recently submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court explaining how gender identity policies can negatively impact sexual assault survivors: "Safe Spaces for Women has a strong interest in ensuring that the voices of women who have suffered sexual abuse are heeded when policies are made that may directly affect their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. This includes policies that require educational institutions covered by Title IX to admit to female showers, locker rooms, and restrooms biological males who identify as female. While Safe Spaces for Women bears no animus toward the transgendered community, it is deeply concerned that … survivors of sexual assault are likely to suffer psychological trauma as a result of encountering biological males—even those with entirely innocent intentions—in the traditional safe spaces of women’s showers, locker rooms, and bathrooms." The brief goes on to note that the guidance from the Obama administration was issued “without giving those affected a voice in the process. … improperly circumvent[ing] the notice and comment process when that process was needed most.”
Likewise, Kenneth V. Lanning, a 40-year veteran law enforcement officer who specialized in sex crimes for the FBI at Quantico for 20 years, explains the problem with “gender identity-based access policies” for sex-specific intimate facilities. Lanning says “the problem with potential sex offenses is not crimes by transgendered persons,” but rather “offenses by males who are not really transgendered but who would exploit the entirely subjective provisions” of such policies “to facilitate their sexual behavior or offenses.” Lanning explains that: "Allowing a man, based only on his claim to be [a] transgendered woman, to have unlimited access to women’s rest rooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, showers, etc. will make it easier for the type of sex offense behavior previously described to happen to more women and children. Such access would create an additional risk for potential victims in a previously protected setting and a new defense for a wide variety of sexual victimization."
Indeed, as The Daily Signal previously noted, such sexual victimization already is occurring by men who have disguised themselves as women.

What to Do Now
Wednesday night’s actions by the Justice and Education departments will lead to good policy outcomes, which is why it should not be limited to Title IX.
The Trump administration should extend this decision to every area where federal agencies have imposed new “gender identity” rules on the American people without basis in law, without congressional authorization, without considering legitimate countervailing concerns, and without the support of the American people.
Congress should make such administrative actions permanent by reintroducing and passing H.R. 5812, the Civil Rights Uniformity Act, which clarifies that the term “sex” does not mean “gender identity” for the purpose of interpreting civil rights statutes. This would have the benefit of undoing the past and current abuses of Title IX, as well as preventing future abuses of other civil rights law. Passing the Civil Rights Uniformity Act would ensure that unelected bureaucrats and judges would not get to unilaterally reshape policy affecting women and girls. It would allow schools to continue providing separate bathroom and locker room facilities and sports teams based on biological sex, not gender identity. It also would address other unilateral Obama-era “gender identity” reinterpretations in health care, emergency shelters, housing, and employment. At the same time, such legislation would properly leave states and private entities entirely free to provide nuanced, sensitive, and reasonable accommodations of people who identify as transgender.
Up until last year’s prime-time interview of the celebrity then known as Bruce Jenner, few Americans ever had had a conversation about transgender issues. It’s a conversation we need to have.
But the Obama administration tried to shut down these discussions before they’ve even begun. The Obama administration attempted to force a one-size-fits-all policy on the entire nation rather than allow parents and teachers and local schools the time, space, and flexibility to find solutions that work best for everyone.

The Trump administration has taken the first steps to correct this.
While the Obama administration attempted to rewrite law to impose a federal “gender identity” policy on the entire nation, the Trump administration is respecting federalism, local decision-making, and parental authority in education.

For most Americans, concerns related to transgender students are a new reality. Rather than follow the Obama administration’s rush to impose a top-down solution on the entire country, the Trump administration is allowing the American people to have these conversations, consider all the relevant concerns, and make policies that will best serve all Americans. Good for them.

#1869 (2/23) BLACK HISTORY MONTH: "Why Frederick Douglass Was an Exemplary American"

"WHY FREDERICK DOUGLAS WAS AN EXEMPLARY AMERICAN"Peter C. Myers / February 13, 2017 / http://dailysignal.com/2017/02/13/why-frederick-douglass-was-an-exemplary-american/

This month of each year, we commemorate the great individuals and events in the history of African-Americans. On Tuesday [2/14], marking his 199th birthday, we will commemorate perhaps the greatest of them all, Frederick Douglass—a singular exemplar and apostle of the American spirit.

“He was an American of the Americans,” Douglass once said of Abraham Lincoln, in words that apply no less aptly to himself. “Born and reared among the lowly, a stranger to wealth and luxury, compelled to grapple single-handed with the flintiest hardships of life … he grew strong in the manly and heroic qualities demanded by the great mission to which he was called.”

Douglass loved America. He loved it for its principles and for its promise. Nonetheless, the sentiment of patriotism, which he regarded as “pure, natural, and noble,” did not come naturally or easily to him. “What country have I?” he asked in an 1847 editorial, and he then answered: None. As he confessed to his early abolitionist mentor William Lloyd Garrison, the sentiment of patriotism “was whipt out of me” by the slave masters under whose dominion he was born.

Given the circumstances of his youth, it is unremarkable that Douglass, after escaping from slavery, would embrace the teaching of Garrison, who in his abolitionist zeal rejected the Constitution as a pro-slavery “covenant with death” and who would call for non-slaveholding states to sever their association with slaveholders by seceding from the federal union.

What is remarkable is that within a few years, by conscientious study and reflection, Douglass set himself on a different course. Douglass came to reject the Garrisonian position, and he explained why in a Fourth of July oration delivered July 5, 1852, a speech now recognized as the greatest of all abolitionist speeches.

In it, he praised the Constitution as “a glorious liberty document,” and he extolled the Founders for their courage and their wisdom alike: “They were brave men. They were great men too. … They seized upon eternal principles, and set a glorious example in their defense. Mark them!”

In those principles—the principles of the Declaration of Independence—Douglass found the distinctive promise of America.“The leading object of [our] government,” Lincoln said in a July 4 message of his own, is “to elevate the condition of men—to lift artificial weights from all shoulders—to clear the paths of laudable pursuit for all—to afford all an unfettered start, and a fair chance.”

Precisely so, Douglass added in the most popular of his post-Civil War speeches:
"America is said, and not without reason, to be preeminently the home and patron of self-made men … [The] principle of measuring and valuing men according to their respective merits and without regard to their antecedents, is better established and more generally enforced here than in any other country."

Douglass summarized the nation’s promise a few years after the Union victory. America’s mission, he proclaimed, is to become “the most perfect national illustration of the unity and dignity of the human family that the world has ever seen.”

The converse is still more telling: As Douglass conceived of the virtue of the country in terms of human integration and elevation, he conceived of the main dangers to it as forces of disintegration and degradation, including any and all artificial barriers to the exercise of individual rights and the cultivation of civic unity.

Those forces and barriers were manifold. In the antebellum period, they included not only slavery itself but also Garrison’s disunion proposal, in which Douglass found “no intelligible principle of action.” Both before and after the Civil War, they included also the ideas of constitutional state sovereignty and of sectionalism whereby portions of the country were licensed to disregard rights proper both to human beings and to American citizens.

“The true doctrine,” Douglass wrote in objecting to the Supreme Court’s Slaughter-House Cases doctrine of differential state and federal citizenship rights, “is one nation, one country, one citizenship and one law for all the people.”

Most powerful of all sources of disintegration, however, was race. Beyond his objections to race-based slavery, needless to belabor here, of particular interest is Douglass’ objection to the cultivation of racial identity even when the aim was racial uplift rather than oppression or exclusion. A few months before he died, he observed, “We hear, since emancipation, much said … in commendation of race pride, race love, race effort, race superiority, race men, and the like.” Conceding that what he had to say “may be more useful than palatable,” he nevertheless admonished the friends of racial equality that they:
"...make a great mistake in saying so much of race and color … It is an effort to cast out Satan by Beelzebub … I would place myself, and I would place you, my young friends, upon grounds vastly higher and broader than any founded upon race or color … Not as Ethiopians; not as Caucasians; not as Mongolians; not as Afro-Americans, or Anglo-Americans, are we addressed, but as men. God and nature speak to our manhood, and to our manhood alone.

Douglass’ story is the story of an American who, like his country, rose from a low beginning to a great height, who gained freedom by his own virtue and against great odds, and who matured into a world-famous apostle of universal liberty.
It is the story, too, of a man divided by race, who with time and work became his country’s most prominent representative of the aspiration toward racial uplift, reconciliation, and integration.
Recounted in three finely crafted autobiographies, Douglass’ story is timely in any season and locale. In our own, a time when many Americans feel trapped by circumstances, ignored, or disdained by those in positions of public responsibility and confused about the meaning and merits of their country’s identity, it is particularly so.

THIS SUNDAY – The Academy Awards: Whether or not you end up watching it, take time to PRAY for the movie industry in America that has such a powerful (these days, usually negative impact) on our culture and that of the world. PRAY that those who would do creative film projects that reflect the best of American values would hold greater sway and that the many who don’t walk with you will have someone  in their circle of influence who will tell them of the Savior. Rather than simply condemn the darkness, let’s light a candle through our prayers. - Stan

"NIGERIA'S FORGOTTEN CHRISTIANS - STAND WITH OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS"by: Eric Metaxas, February 21, 2017; http://www.breakpoint.org/2017/02/breakpoint-nigerias-forgotten-christians/
Almost nobody knows what’s happening to the Christians of Nigeria—but even fewer care. Here’s why we should.

In Nigeria, which is Africa’s most populous country, Christians don’t have time to worry about culture wars. They’re too busy facing a real one instigated by their Muslim neighbors and by a government that has studiously decided to look the other way. The scope of the violence is so vast as to be almost beyond belief, so let me first give you a snapshot of what’s happening on the ground.

Deborah, now 31 and living in a camp for the internally displaced, was captured by the Boko Haram terrorist group and held captive for a year and a half. The Islamists came to her village and slaughtered her husband and family before abducting her and “marrying” her off to a 20-year-old Muslim terrorist, who complained of her argumentativeness while raping and impregnating her. After Deborah was recaptured following an escape, she received 80 lashes as punishment. She told journalist Douglas Murray that she no longer fears death.

“What sort of death would I be running from?” Deborah asks. “I have already died once.”

You could repeat Deborah’s basic story countless times in Nigeria. Operation World estimates that Nigeria, which is an officially secular state with a Muslim president, is 51 percent Christian and 45 percent Muslim. Since 1999, the West African nation of about 158 million people has been convulsed by ongoing attempts at imposing Islamic law in eight northern, mostly Muslim states, as well as in four other states where Christians predominate or where the numbers are fairly even.

Things are particularly bad in the north right now. Unarmed Christian villages there are sitting ducks for Muslim Fulani tribesmen, who have been armed with weaponry provided by elements in the national military. According to The Spectator, it’s religiously motivated genocide, although outside agencies dismiss the violence as tit-for-tat.

“The locals [don't] collect the freshest bodies,” the magazine reports. “Some who tried earlier have already been killed, spotted by the waiting militia and hacked down or shot. The Fulani are watching everything closely from the surrounding mountains. Every week, their progress across the northern states of Plateau and Kaduna continues. Every week, more massacres—another village burned, its church razed, its inhabitants slaughtered, raped or chased away.

Open Doors USA, as part of its annual World Watch List, says the killings have jumped by a whopping 62 percent in a year. And while Nigeria is No. 12 on the World Watch List of Christian persecution globally, it’s in the top 10 in terms of overall violence.

And yet it’s not all gloom and doom in Nigeria. As Tertullian reminded us, the blood of the martyrs is often the seed of the church. Operation World says the country now boasts a strong prayer movement, dynamic church growth, and a growing missionary movement, with more than 5,000 cross-cultural workers—many of them in Nigeria or in other African nations.

So while much of the world has forgotten about Nigeria’s persecuted Christians, surely those of us in the West cannot. They are our brothers and sisters, and they’re doing great things in the midst of severe trials. Let’s hold them up in powerful, prevailing prayer.

Let’s also speak up to the new administration in Washington, which says it will stand up for persecuted Christians around the world. Let’s remind them of their promises and make sure they follow through.

The Christians of Nigeria need us, and since we are members of the same worldwide Body of Christ, we need them.
