#2749 (7/31) "Speaking Truth that Nobody Wants to Hear"

"SPEAKING TRUTH THAT NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR"Steve Brown, KeyLife.org; Wednesday July 17, 2019; https://www.keylife.org/articles/speaking-truth-that-nobody-wants-to-hear
As we move into an increasingly hostile culture, it’s becoming more difficult for Christians to speak their truth without paying a price for it.Because that’s true, there is a question Christians need to consider: How do you keep speaking truth when it seems that nobody wants to hear it? Further, how do you keep speaking truth when those who hear it are angry because we spoke it?

Christian truth speaks to all of life and is, by its very nature, exclusive of all other truth that contradicts it. Jesus said, “I am the truth,” but he wasn’t just the truth; he also spoke truth. In fact, some 78 times in the gospels, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth.”
In Calvin Miller’s Singer Trilogy, the Singer (i.e. Jesus) encounters the anger of World Hater (i.e. Satan) and his followers. Miller writes this, “It is always much more difficult to sing when the audience has turned its back.” It is, you know? The “audience” once cheered our truth and we were rewarded for speaking it. We had political power, money and prestige. If you haven’t noticed, that’s no longer true.
Now that we no longer have the leverage and cultural approval, how are we going to speak our truth? Maybe we have to do it the way Jesus—who had no power, no money and no leverage—did it. You think?

There’s an interesting incident in which the apostles are arrested. God used them in some miraculous ways and a whole lot of people came to Christ which didn’t make “the powers” very happy. During the night, an angel released them from the prison and told them to go back to the temple and do the same thing that got them arrested in the first place. As to be expected, they were arrested again and brought before the leaders.
Maybe we have to do it the way Jesus—who had no power, no money and no leverage—did it.
Peter “spoke truth to power” with this: “‘We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him’” (Acts 5:29-32).

Let me give you some facts that help me focus on what every Christian is called to do. We’re called to speak truth. We aren’t called to change it, fix it or use it…just speak it as clearly and as plainly as we can. We have been given a precious gift in the truth that God has revealed and we must never compromise it.

Jesus
The truth we speak isn’t about us. It’s about Jesus. Note that Peter made the main thing, the main thing. He said that Jesus was “Leader and Savior,” and God exalted Jesus to give repentance and forgiveness.
The late Grady Wilson, Billy Graham’s longtime associate, was a friend of mine and often preached at a church I served in the Miami area. I loved him and loved his preaching. We sometimes forget that Grady was an effective evangelist and preacher in his own right who gave up his own career to “hold up the arms” of Mr. Graham. Grady used to pray, “Lord, you make Billy strong and I’ll keep him humble.”
At any rate, sometimes Grady would say something controversial in the pulpit. Then he would pause, hold up his Bible, and say, “I didn’t say it, God said it.” Using his example, I’ve often added, “And not only that, I don’t like it much more than you do, but I don’t get a vote.”

Us
Our truth includes not only the truth about sin, God and salvation…it also includes the truth about us.
In the Bible God graciously reminds us of the neediness and sin of our “heroes” in general and of Peter in particular. When Peter gave his speech before the court in Jerusalem, I want to be his cheerleader. “You go, bro!” I want to shout. But if I turn to Galatians, I wince when Paul describes Peter’s duplicity and hypocrisy. Paul’s amazing confession in Romans 7 of his own sin (his present sin) is a gift that God gave to his people and the gift that we give to others when we speak the truth we’ve been given.
Those who don’t like our truth still won’t like it. But they’ll listen to the bad news about them if we make it clear that the bad news is about us too. There is great power in saying, “You’re sinful and needy, and in serious trouble with a holy God. I would try to fix you but I can’t because I can’t fix myself and I’m probably worse than you are. But run to Jesus. For some strange and crazy reason, he likes people like us.”

Love
Truth is not about judgment. It’s about love. I suspect Peter wasn’t altogether happy about going to jail…twice. Why would he do it? Peter wrote, “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8).
John the apostle said that we love because he first loved us. That is the mark of Christian truth. Love without truth is, of course, shallow, warm and fuzzy drivel. But truth without love isn’t true; it’s just arrogance.

Power
When truth is spoken we don’t use the power; we observe it. This is a great description of the power of truth to accomplish the purposes of God: “Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women” (Acts 5:12-14).
God’s truth, even when sinners like us speak it, is a powerful “two-edged” sword. When the apostles were released the second time from jail, they returned to their brothers and sisters. Luke wrote, “Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ” (Acts 5:41-42).

If we do it right, will we then be loved and accepted, and regain our prestige and power? Are you crazy? Jesus spoke his truth and they hung him on a cross.
We have a long way to go yet. In the meantime, don’t shilly-shally.

#2748 (7/30) "Doctors Need to Examine Their Motives on Trans Teens"

"DOCTORS NEED TO EXAMINE THEIR MOTIVES ON RANS TEENS" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, July 24, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190724/trans-teens
"It was easier than signing a cell phone contract." That's how Helena, who identified as transgender at age 15, described getting her first hormone prescription. She didn't need a therapist's approval or any kind of assessment when she walked in the clinic. "You just need to go sign the paper, and they'll give you the [drugs]." Seventeen months of testosterone later, she wished she'd never taken it.

Helena is just one of the voices warning parents and teenagers to stop listening to the culture when it comes to gender confusion. "It's a social contagion," she insists. For kids who have trouble fitting in, like she did, transitioning is one way that social media tells them they'll be popular. "It was very much the 'in' thing to do," she told Madeleine Kearns. But, like a lot of young people who've walked away from that lifestyle, Helena looks back and shudders. "I don't think I had a very good understanding ... that the things I [was doing were] going to affect me in 20 years. Which is why I think it's so messed up that it's so easy for a person like me to get hormones."

Dr. Michelle Cretella, head of the American College of Pediatricians, agrees -- and blames the medical community for being complicit in this dangerous agenda. In a letter to U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams, ACP is sounding the alarm over what they call a "grave public health concern impacting children and adolescents diagnosed with gender dysphoria (GD)." It is, they point out, "an issue so dire that the Royal College of General Practitioners in the United Kingdom issued an unprecedented warning to the public earlier this month."

Without any sort of long-term testing, drugs and life-altering surgeries are being suggested to minors as the new "standard of care." That's wrong, she insists, especially since 61-98 percent of affected children "will outgrow their GD if allowed to progress through natural puberty." These are toxic hormones, Dr. Cretella explained on Tuesday's "Washington Watch," being given to children as young as eight -- and, in some cases, without their parents' permission.

"This is pure insanity," she told listeners. "This is not medicine... We're talking about [kids] between ages eight and 12 being pumped full of synthetic hormones that have serious side effects -- in combination with puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones... [We're sentencing kids] to a lifetime of dependence on these drugs, which put them at risk for heart attack, strokes, diabetes, cancers and continued suicidal ideation or thoughts... It's institutionalized child abuse."

What's worse, Dr. Cretella points out, very few people in the medical community are willing to speak out. "We have physicians and drug companies profiting off of the suffering of children... [when what they really need is] therapy and sound counseling to get at any sort of underlying issue." Before this "wholesale promotion of transgenderism," she points out, doctors were cautious. They knew that "the vast majority of children who were confused about their sex, if they were supported through natural puberty, they outgrew the confusion." That's been documented, she explains in 11 studies. "But again, that was before all the transgender propaganda."

Now, there are actually whistleblowers in clinics as far away as the U.K. "who are aghast at what's being done to these children. They've come out and said, 'Look, we have evidence that these children are suffering harm,' but that evidence is being suppressed." That's why, Dr. Cretella says, her organization decided to send the letter now -- before the situation gets worse.

The doctors who are asking questions are being reprimanded, she warned -- "or they're basically sent for reeducation." "It's politicized medicine," she says sadly. And there are physicians in areas of authority who are willingly embracing "ideology over science." Maybe with good intentions, she admits, but "there's no science to back it up." And science -- along with courage -- is the only hope for young people like Helena. Let's hope Surgeon General Adams agrees.

#2747 (7/29) "Understanding Why ‘the Squad’ Screams ‘Racism’"

"UNDERSTANDING WHY 'THE SQUAD' SCREAMS RACISM"Star Parker / @UrbanCURE / July 24, 2019 /https://www.dailysignal.com/2019/07/24/understanding-why-the-squad-screams-racism/
---------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, the U.S. House of Representatives is starting to look more and more like America’s universities. Freshmen show up not to learn, but to teach. They think they already know it all and see their personal mission is to set straight the faculty, the university administrators, and the world. So we see it with “the squad,” the now-famous far-left freshmen four in the House–Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley–who believe they have been elected to a first term in Congress to reinvent what they think is a failed America and set straight the leadership of their party and the nation.

Fortunately, most Americans do not share this highly vocal four’s negativism about America. In a new Gallup poll, 70 percent agreed with the statement “If you work hard and play by the rules, you will be able to achieve the American dream in your lifetime.” Even a significant majority–61 percent–of households earning less than $40,000 agreed.

It goes without saying that immigration is a high-priority issue on the national agenda because millions from around the world want to come here. There is no more sought-out destination than the USA, and the reason is that no nation in the world offers more opportunity.

So why is this dubious group of naysayers commanding such attention?
The first rule on the list of “Rules for Radicals,” authored by famed left-wing community organizer Saul Alinsky, is “Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.” Our age of technology and social media adds immeasurable power to Alinsky’s advice to gain attention way beyond the support you actually have.
Another Alinsky rule, “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon,” provides the ammunition. These four young freshmen Democrats have no interest in a public discourse of deliberation where we soberly seek what is true and what really works. Their only interest is selling their dogma. So, following the advice of Alinsky, they get attention not by developing quality ideas for public policy reform and engaging in thoughtful discourse about these ideas, but through sensational hype of dogma and character assassination of those who disagree.
As a result, the discussion is not about the merits of the socialism they are selling, about their big-government answers to health, housing, education, and lifting up the poor, but about answering their charges that anyone who does not agree with them is a racist.
Attacking the messenger, rather than discussing the message, is a well-established tactic of those whose aspiration is political power rather than seeking truth. Demagoguery is an age-old threat to freedom and the democratic process. There will always be those who long for power and will try to get it with heat rather than light.

There is only one weapon I am aware of to fight this. And that is doing the hard work to inform people and get the truth to them. The opposition to socialism, support for freedom, is not about being racist. It’s about believing in human potential, the uniqueness of every single person, and that no system serves human potential better than freedom. This is not dogma. There’s tons of research and data that supports this conclusion. And it is this that has made and makes the USA so great.
The task is particularly formidable among our youth, where so many have abandoned traditional faith, and among our poor, where the harshness of life increases susceptibility to political demagoguery.

It is no contradiction to say our country and its tradition of freedom is what makes us great but to also be open and honest about how we have problems. Most of these problems–fiscal problems and social problems–are manifest in areas where we have departed from our tradition of freedom and allowed big-government answers into our lives. Don’t agree? This is the discussion we will have in 2020.

#2746 (7/28) SUNDAY SPECIAL: "The Manhattan Declaration 10 Years On - Never Render to Caesar What Is God’s"

"THE MANHATTAN DELCARATION 10 YEARS ON - NEVER RENDER TO CAESAR WHAT IS GOD'S" - by John Stonestreet and David Carlson, Breakpoint.org, July 23, 2019; http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/07/breakpoint-the-manhattan-declaration-10-years-on-2/ [AS I SEE IT: Taking a stand by signing this document - as I have - costs you nothing. But if enough people of faith do not take this stand , it WILL cost us ALL dearly. Count on it! - Stan]
The year 2019 is the ten-year anniversary of a statement that drew the line for Christians on three central issues: life, marriage, and religious liberty. There were many prophetic lines in the Manhattan Declaration, which was co-authored by Chuck Colson, Dr. Timothy George of Beeson Divinity School, and Dr. Robert George of Princeton University, but none were more important than the last line:  that “we will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar,” but under “no circumstances” could we “render to Caesar what belongs to God.” Half-a-million Christians signed on.

In the ten years since those words were written, Caesar (in other words, the state) has claimed more and more of what belongs to God, especially in the areas of life, marriage, and religious liberty.
Just think of New York lawmakers high-fiving each other after they ensured unrestricted abortion up to the point of birth, or the governor of Virginia advocating infanticide. Or consider that doctor-assisted suicide is now legal in seven states and the District of Columbia. And what about marriage? Recall the White House lit up in rainbow colors after the Obergefell decision mandated same-sex “marriage” on all fifty states.
And think of all the stories we’ve now heard of believers forced to choose between their faith and their livelihood, or adoption agencies forced to choose between their existence and their convictions. Or business owners like Jack Phillips and Barronelle Stutzman having to go to court to fend off Caesar’s demands.

Still, let’s be clear. Far more important than what Caesar demands is what Christians are willing to concede. A new Barna survey revealed that the number of Protestant pastors who are “very concerned” about religious freedom has dropped significantly in just three years—from 55 percent to only 34 percent.

This is why Christians must decide where they stand, not based on the pressure of the cultural moment, but on the rock-solid, unchanging truth revealed to us in the Story of Scripture. We cannot render to Caesar what belongs to God.

I don’t think I can say it any better than Dr. Robert George did in his entry to our BreakPoint.org symposium about the Manhattan Declaration: “In the gospels, our Lord says . . .’be not afraid.’ As we stand boldly for life, marriage, and religious liberty, let us heed His admonition. It is not for us to know when or even precisely how the victories will be won. Our task and duty is simply to be faithful and obedient—to bear witness and do what is right . . . When things look bleak, we must not give up hope, for to yield to despair is to fail to trust in Jesus.”

To that I say Amen. If you’ve signed the Manhattan Declaration, I urge you to read it again. Consider again what we must do to honor God in this culture. If you’ve not read it or signed it, I urge you to consider doing so. You can find a link to the full text of the Manhattan Declaration, as well as to our online symposium, featuring Dr. George’s comments along with those of 15 other thought leaders, at BreakPoint.org.

And finally, I was pleased to work with the brilliant Dr. David Dockery on a new book, which is now available, that reflects on Christian conviction. It’s called “Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty: What Belongs to God, and What Belongs to Caesar.” An absolutely stunning group contributed to the book, including Dr. George, Joni Eareckson Tada, Randy Alcorn, Ryan Anderson, Frederica Mathewes-Green, Michael Farris, Kristen Waggoner, Mary Eberstadt and more. It’s available for purchase here at the Colson Center Bookstore.

This is worth repeating: We will ungrudgingly render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, but we can never render to Caesar what belongs to God.

#2745 (7/27) PRO-LIFE SAT: "Hollywood Delivers Its Lines on Abortion"

-
--------------------------------------

"HOLLYWOOD DELIVERS ITS LINES ON ABORTION" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, July 25, 2019; https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA19G41&f=WU19G15
While Hollywood tiptoes around China for approval on various projects, there is one area they should both agree on: abortion. The infamous one-child regime, which has an increasingly powerful seat at America's entertainment table, won't be the least bit offended by Tinseltown's latest mandate -- scenes about ending pregnancies with characters who are proud of it.

The shift started, the New York Times believes, when a women's rights lawyer held court with a group of Hollywood bigwigs and insisted that promoting abortion should be a more prominent storyline. "The stories on abortion do not match our reality," she said. Nor, she went on, were there enough of them. Now that legal infanticide is the rallying cry of the Democratic party, the industry has slowly started heeding the call to glorify one of the most devastating decisions a woman can make.

"You're definitely seeing more of the matter-of-fact 'I am pregnant, I don't want to be, I'm going to have an abortion,'" sociologist Gretchen Sisson told the Times. Her work, which includes "tracking how abortion is characterized onscreen," has taken an interesting turn since last year, she explains. The number of characters who are talking about or pursing these procedures -- "unapologetically," as they call it -- keeps growing. "And it's gone way up in 2019."
"These portrayals," the Times points out, "...are a marked departure from how abortion was depicted, or not, in story lines from the '80s through the early aughts. Characters facing unplanned pregnancies then usually agonized about what to do or, if the show was set in the past, weighed back-alley procedures. Babies were often carried to term or lost to miscarriage. Terminations led to psychological or physical problems or death. It's not that today's characters come to their decisions without deliberation, but that they are decisive and forthright..."

Of course, it's not like most people expected Hollywood to give the realities of abortion a fair shake. As the writer of Abby Johnson's story Unplanned pointed out, "Hollywood's run by the Left. You won't see pro-life stories on TV." Pro-life stories aside, most Americans would just be happy to see an accurate portrayal of their turmoil and regret. To treat abortion as a simple outpatient procedure -- without trauma and pain -- is a disservice to viewers and a misrepresentation of what thousands of mothers experience.

Lost in this rush to normalize abortion are the deeply personal stories of women trying to cope. In powerful studies about the lifelong consequences, women who've had abortions talk openly about their regrets. What may surprise you is that the grief doesn't take sides. It haunts women on both sides of the political debate. According to CareNet, who points to a lot of data about the turmoil mothers experience for years after their procedure. Dr. Priscilla Coleman published a scholarly report that found "women who had undergone abortion experienced an 81 percent increased risk of mental health problems."

In FRC's "Top 10 Myths about Abortion,"[https://downloads.frc.org/EF/EF19A13.pdf] Dr. Ingrid Skop talks at length about the lie that this procedure has made women's lives better. She quotes Frederic Mathewes-Green, a pro-life feminist, who says no woman looks at this "choice" unemotionally. "...[T]he question remains, do women want abortion? Not like she wants a Porsche or an ice cream cone. Like an animal caught in a trap, trying to gnaw off its own leg, a woman who seeks abortion is trying to escape a desperate situation by an act of violence and self-loss. Abortion," she warns, "is not a sign that women are free, but a sign that they are desperate."

#2744 (7/26) "The Mueller Retort"

"THE MUELLER REPORT" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, July 25, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190725/mueller-retort [AS I SEE IT: I felt like a fool for letting Fandango keep me on hold for a total of over 90 minutes (!) in order to purchase a movie ticket. As I told the sales rep., I didn't appreciate their wasting that much of my life and calling it "customer service." But then I thoughtof those millions who chose to watch the seven plus hours of this waste of time in Washington on Wed. Now that was an even more foolish waste of time. We really need to hold the Democrats accountable for their continued obvious partisan antics. Sheesh!- Stan]
----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Finally, Washington sort of agrees on something," the New Yorker half-joked. "Mueller bombed." After 124 days of waiting, "painful" doesn't begin to describe the disjointed spectacle of former special counsel Robert Mueller's House hearing. The epic dud, proclaimed across the news networks as "sad," "embarrassing," and "a disaster" came to an anti-climatic end Wednesday for Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) party. Democrats, who've desperately been trying to find a way to end Donald Trump's presidency prematurely, are back to square one. If they want to send Trump packing, the Washington Post pointed out, they'll have to do it the old-fashioned way -- at the ballot box.

The seven-hour sit-down was supposed to be the must-see event of the year. Instead, the New York Times pronounced, Mueller's appearance was "the blockbuster that wasn't." Confused, evasive, and downright scattered, the man at the center of one of the biggest political witch hunts in history did nothing but prove what a waste of time this entire drama has been. The liberal's political savior was such a liability that by afternoon's end even CNN's Jeffery Toobin was calling it a "win" for President Trump.

Congressman Mike Johnson (R-La.), chair of the Republican Study Committee who had a front row seat for the circus in the hearing, told me on "Washington Watch" that Democrats had every right to be disappointed. "They truly hoped, as I said in my closing statement for the Republican side... that there was really one reason that Mr. Mueller was called to testify today -- and that was to give political cover to our colleagues on the other side of the aisle. They desperately wanted him to tell them that they had to impeach the president. He did not do that. His report of course did not do that. And that's where we are today -- just exactly where we were yesterday."
When I asked him if he felt like the committees had covered any new ground, he said flatly, "None at all." But then, he pointed out, everyone should have expected that. Mr. Mueller himself made that quite clear when he had his press conference more than a month ago, when he insisted, "I'm going to stick to the four corners of this document."

But as frustrating as the scene must have been for Democrats, Republicans were equally annoyed. After all, Mike pointed out, there were so many questions that went unanswered about the report's bias, its origins, the Steele dossier, the tainted FBI agents. None of those gaping holes in this theory were addressed, Congressman Johnson vented. "He refused to even talk about the origins of this whole charade... now proven to be totally bogus. That was the foundation of this entire ordeal.... and if the root of it is corrupt, then everything that comes from it is as well."

Mueller was asked to get to the bottom of this supposed collusion with Russia, but we've all known for quite some time that, as Mike put it, "There was 'no there there' -- not even any smoke, much less any fire... It was a political hack job, and now it's proven to be so." From an investigative team with 14 Democrats and zero Republicans, none of this should have come as a surprise. There were FBI agents texting how much they hated Donald Trump and vowing to take him out. "[Those are] their own words. So it's hard to look at this by any objective measure and say, 'Oh, well, this was a fair investigation.'"

For all those people who camped out to watch what history, what they witnessed instead was, in Rep. Johnson's eyes and others, a "colossal waste of time." But don't think for a second that that will deter Democrats. Will the House finally move on now, I asked Mike? "Boy, I wish that were true," he said. Instead, he expects that they'll just change their narrative. "Speaker Pelosi and Jerry Nadler and the other Democrats in charge of these committees are just absolutely fixated on investigating the president. I think it's going to go on through the election."

That's just fine with the White House, who knows the American people are just as sick and tired of this wild goose chase as they are. If Pelosi keeps it up, President Trump will know exactly where to send a thank you note for 2020.

#2743 (7/25) "Congress Borrows Trouble with Debt Deal [Again!]"

"CONGRESS BORROWS TROUBLE WITH DEBT DEAL [AGAIN!]" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, July 22, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190722/congress-borrows [AS I SEE IT: Not reigning in our country's spending has been been a problem in this country for more than half a century. So what the President and Congress are about to agree to do is nothing new. But it becomes even more dangerous for the future (generations) of this coungry every time they "kick the can down the road" and refuse to deal with it now. That President Trump continues to along with this is  one of the things I am most disapponted with regarding this administration. - Stan]
-----------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
While the media's busy talking about China, Iran, and North Korea, the biggest threat to America may be the one nobody's really talking about -- the U.S. debt. Our country has plenty of enemies, but right now, Congress's spending habits may be doing more damage to America's future than any dictator ever could. Now that the U.S. is up against the borrowing limit, both parties have a chance to do something about it. But, as everyone knows, talking about budget cuts isn't the problem. Finding leaders who will carry through with them is.

If a good political compromise is one that everyone hates, then this weekend's debt ceiling proposal is a success. As of late Sunday, both sides were still trying to nail down details on a deal that would give America an even bigger credit limit over the next two years -- with almost no real spending cuts to offset it. Conservatives, like Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) -- head of the Republican Study Committee, can't believe the administration is even considering it. The last thing America should be doing, they insist, is make it easier for Congress to spend money it doesn't have.

Think about it in terms of a credit card, some Republicans have said. If you have a son or daughter who exceeds the limit, what do you do? Well, for starters, you rip up the card. Then you make it clear: it's time to change our habits. So far, Congress has done neither. In fact, the preliminary plan hashed out between Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin isn't in the same ballpark as the White House's budget gurus, who insist that any debt ceiling increase has to be tied to $150 billion in new cuts.
What Pelosi and other members are suggesting, the Washington Post points out, does the exact opposite. It increases spending by tens of billions of dollars through 2021 -- completely ignoring the White House's request to start slashing money for government agencies, starting in October. The measly $80 billion Pelosi does include in offsets are pocket change compared to what the president's team requested -- not to mention, the Post argues, they wouldn't take place for years. And that's if a future Congress doesn't reverse them!

Rep. Johnson, like his fellow conservatives, say no deal. "We believe the White House and congressional leadership should be prepared to walk away from this if necessary." With America swimming in red ink, he believes -- and we agree -- that Congress can't keep kicking this can down the road. In a country that's added $2.6 trillion of debt just in the last three years, we are out of road.

And while House leaders have known about this crisis for months (America hit the debt ceiling way back in March) Pelosi waited until right before her chamber adjourns for August recess to ram through a plan that only gives Congress the green light to blow through more money. To wear down the resistance, Pelosi agreed to include a big bump in defense spending -- and the assurance that Democrats won't add any "poison pill riders" (like taxpayer-funded abortion) to the final text.

The debt ceiling is "a very, very sacred thing in our country..." the president told reporters. "We can never play with it." Even so, fiscal experts warn, America's borrowing is on an unsustainable path. While Americans yawn at the numbers, the reality is grim. "Right now," Maya MacGuineas warns, "interest payments [on the national debt] are the single fastest growing part of the budget. Next year, we'll spend more on them than we do on children. Within five years, we'll spend more on them than we do on national defense."

Back in 2016, the GOP tried to draw a line in the sand with the Republicans' national platform. "The huge increase in the national debt demanded by and incurred during the current administration has placed a significant burden on future generations. We must impose firm caps on future debt, accelerate the repayment of the trillions we now owe in order to reaffirm our principles of responsible and limited government, and remove the burdens we are placing on future generations," the delegations agreed.

Lee Payne from Stephen Austin University has said before that parties vote with their platforms 82 percent of the time. It's a shame that spending, for some Republicans, is the exception.

#2742 (7/24) "Planned Parenthood Terminates Dr. Wen - We Should Pray for Her"

------------------------------------------

"PLANNED PARENTHOOD TERMINATES DR. WEN - WE SHOULD PRAY FOR HER" - by John Stonestreet and G. Shane Morris, Beakpoint.org, July 22, 2019; http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/07/breakpoint-planned-parenthood-terminates-dr-wen/ [AS I SEE IT: This article is a great reminder to love/pray for our enemies (Matthew 5:44), that we may not know the full story of why they are/were engaged in  wrong doing.
Back in January of last year, Cecile Richards stepped down as president of Planned Parenthood. She left behind her a political lightning rod of an organization—plagued with scandals involving the sale of fetal body parts, illegal and underage abortions, and fighting for its millions of dollars in annual federal funding from Congress.

Her successor, who took the reins of the country’s largest abortion provider in November, is a surprisingly different person. Leana Wen, a former Health Commissioner and emergency room doctor from Baltimore, was the first actual physician to lead this so-called healthcare organization in half a century. When her appointment was announced last year, I called on-air for Christians to pray for Dr. Wen—that God would change her heart, bring her to faith in Christ, and end her bloody work. I’m not sure whether those prayers have been answered in the way I hoped, but her work at Planned Parenthood has come to an end.

In a Twitter post last week, Dr. Wen announced that the Planned Parenthood board had met in secret and decided to fire her. The reasons for her firing, she said, were “philosophical differences” about the messaging and future of Planned Parenthood.
Since then, we’ve learned a bit more about those differences. The New York Times reports that Dr. Wen just wasn’t “aggressive” enough about explaining and promoting abortion—at least in the eyes of many at Planned Parenthood. In light of new state-level pro-life laws, veterans of the abortion giant wanted a fighter. Not a physician.
It seems Dr. Wen might have tried to run Planned Parenthood as if it really were a healthcare organization. As part of that, she sought to appeal to people outside of the organization’s far-left donor base. For instance, Buzzfeed reports that Wen refused to use “trans-inclusive” language in her messaging, talking about “women’s” healthcare being for, well, women—and excluding men and non-binary individuals. And so, less than a year after hiring Wen, the Planned Parenthood board voted at a “secret meeting” to fire her. As one writer at Slate observes, “Planned Parenthood, it seems, didn’t fully grasp that by tapping a doctor with progressive chops but no political experience it was getting…a doctor with progressive chops but no political experience.”

For Planned Parenthood, this likely means a search for a new, radically pro-abortion, political firebrand to helm their organization—someone more like Cecile Richards. In fact, descriptions of the interim president are very much in line with this prediction. But here’s another question: What will this mean for Dr. Wen?

I’m with Abby Johnson—former Planned Parenthood worker and the subject of the recent pro-life film, “Unplanned.” When she heard about Wen’s firing, she addressed her in a tweet: “I know what this feels like; they did it to me too. If you’d like to talk, I’m here…” Later, Johnson pointed out something many pro-lifers missed: earlier this summer, Dr. Wen—already a mother—suffered a miscarriage. In fact, she wrote about it in The Washington Post.
Imagine for a second the mental, moral, and spiritual conflict of grieving for a lost child while running an organization that routinely kills children of the same age and level of development. And then, on top of it all, they fire you.

All of this makes me wonder: Could Dr. Wen be wavering in her pro-choice convictions? Even beyond the miscarriage, a change of career like this—being terminated—can really make you rethink everything. Now I don’t know that, and I have no way of knowing. But what I do know is that Jesus sometimes shows up in dramatic fashion, and that no one is beyond His reach, or the prayers of His people. So that’s what I’m praying—that Dr. Wen will meet Jesus, find His grace, and become a champion of life.
As Planned Parenthood doubles down on its abortion extremism and political activism, would you also commit to doubling down on prayer? Prayer that this evil organization and its evil practices would come to an end, and that Dr. Leana Wen would find a new beginning.
