#2953 (2/29) PROI-LIFE SAT: "The Born Alive Protection Act Voted Down, Again"

"THE BORN ALIVE PROTECTION ACT VOTED DOWN, AGAIN" - John Stonestreet and David Carlson, Breakpoint.org, 02/27/20; https://www.breakpoint.org/the-born-alive-protection-act-voted-down-again/ [AS I SEE IT: To oppose what is common sense is the extreme views of  every Democratic presidential candidate and other abortion adocates. Scary! - Stan]
Once again, Senator Lindsey Graham has sponsored the “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.” Once again, on Tuesday, the measure failed, this time 53-44, with two Democrats supporting it, and two Republicans voting against it. As Graham put it, “we vote on this every year.”
As the title suggests, the act would ban abortions after 20 weeks, once the fetus can feel pain. Right on cue, abortion supporters labeled the act “outrageously restrictive,” and the idea that children in the womb feel pain as “scientifically disputed.”

That the measure failed is no surprise, but to call it “outrageously restrictive” ignores abortion laws across the rest of the world. Germany and France both restrict abortions at 14 weeks of gestation. Norway restricts at 12 weeks, as does Ireland. Even notoriously liberal Sweden restricts abortions at 18 weeks.

In other words, the “Pain-Capable” Act, especially given the way we protect animals in our country, is quite reasonable. And if it’s reasonable, the other bill introduced Tuesday should be seen as downright obvious and humane. As Republican Senator Steve Daines of Montana described from the Senate floor: “…the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act… mandates that if a baby is born alive following a botched abortion, the doctor must protect that baby and give the same medical care that any other baby would receive.” Then he added, “Is that too much to ask for?” Unfortunately, once again, it was; 41 senators, all of them Democrats, voted to block the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which was sponsored by Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse.
Again, like the previous piece of legislation, the title accurately describes what the measure seeks to accomplish. Unlike many other pieces of legislation, the language of the measure is straightforward and easy to understand: “If an abortion results in the live birth of an infant, the infant is a legal person for all purposes under the laws of the United States, and entitled to all the protections of such laws.” Furthermore, “Any health care practitioner present at the time the child is born alive shall . . . exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age.”
That this Act is considered controversial proves that the ideology of abortion has slipped any of the surly bonds of rationality. Given the straightforward clarity of the Born Alive Protection Act’s title and substance, the language used by its opponents should be noted too. In an online article that practically celebrates the failure of these two bills, CNN called the Born Alive Protection Act an “abortion restriction bill.” Perhaps they received that talking point from Planned Parenthood, who claimed in their communication that the bill pushes “misinformation meant to end access to abortion.”

But the bill says nothing at all about a woman’s access to abortion. In fact, it acknowledges the fact of abortion. It even assumes an abortion was attempted and does nothing to penalize or criminalize anyone seeking or anyone performing an abortion. All it does is confront the reality that babies sometimes survive abortion attempts.

But the worst abuse of language award still goes to CNN, for this line from the article, “…the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, would require abortion providers to work to ‘preserve the life and health’ of a fetus that was born following an attempted abortion as they would for a newborn baby…” I am not making this up. CNN reporter Caroline Kelly literally referred to “a fetus that is born” and contrasted that with a “newborn baby.”

All of this underscores something Chesterton said, “If words aren’t worth fighting for, what on earth would be?” Or even better, one attributed to Confucius, “When words lose their meaning, people lose their lives.” Simply put, Christians must engage this battle at the level of language. Words matter. Definitions matter. Truth matters. And human lives are at stake.

#2952 (2/28) "3 Big Takeaways From Trump’s Trip to India"

"3 BIG TAKEAWAYS FROM TRUMP'S TRIP TO INDIA" - James Carafano / @JJCarafano / February 26, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/02/26/3-big-takeaways-from-trumps-trip-to-india/ [AS I SEE IT: Once again - to not much surprise - the mainstream media found a way to disregard if not downplay the president's trip to India. They just can't seem to report anything that demonstrates the positive impact President Trump is having at home or around the world. - Stan]
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump arrive for a joint press conference Tuesday at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. (Photo: Prakash Singh/ AFP/Getty Images)

It may look as if President Donald Trump’s trip to India boiled down to little more than media optics and Taj Mahal photo shoots. But there is much more significance to it than that.

Over 100,000 people packed a cricket stadium to hear Trump and India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, reprise the “Howdy, Modi” event in Houston, Texas, a few months ago. Each leader highlighted the accomplishments of the other and discussed the strengthening bilateral relationship between our two countries. Are there notable takeaways from this historic visit? Definitely.

For one, who could have predicted it would take a stadium big enough to hold 100,000-plus cricket fans to showcase two politicians? Of course, we also ought to acknowledge this is India, one of the most populous nations on Earth. A hundred thousand people in India is like five guys at a Starbucks in D.C. And yet if the stadium could have taken 10 times that number, Modi and Trump probably still could have filled it. The people of India know something very special is going on here.
U.S.-India relations exhibit a bipartisan character in both countries. This is more than just two charismatic leaders and the offer of free hats pulling in a crowd. The U.S. and India have a lot to offer each other. The easy get is security. Both want a stable and prosperous South Asia and a reasonable Pakistan. Both want to tackle the scourge of transnational Islamist terrorism and curb the worst destabilizing acts of Chinese expansion.
The U.S. and India have forged something new and unprecedented. We are not old-fashioned treaty allies, but we are way more than just friends. This is a vital strategic partnership. We know that from the most distant Pacific island to the Middle East, we have each other’s back. This is a new geostrategic reality in the world. To be fair, the two countries started moving in this direction before Modi and Trump made the scene. But they have sealed the deal.

Second, now comes the hard part—forging the economic bonds. This was a disappointment to both sides, which had hoped to seal at least a small-ball trade deal for the visit. This is difficult for India, which traditionally has had an inward-looking economy with heavy government controls.
Still, India knows it’s time to change. India now has the world’s fifth-largest economy, and it’s time to harness that economic potential to drive real growth. Nothing will make that happen faster than partnering with the United States. Deals are coming. They will be followed by more deals.

Third, this visit also reminds Americans that we have a statesman in the White House. The critics would have us believe that Trump is burning through allies and making America the enmity of the world. What Trump showed in India is how empty that critique really is. At least we know a few hundred thousand Indians think so. [Originally published by Fox News.]

#2951 (2/27) "The Left’s Appalling Whitewashing of Castro’s Legacy"

"THE LEFT'S APPALLING WHITEWASHING OF CASTRO'S LEGACY"  -  Mike Gonzalez / @Gundisalvus / November 26, 2016 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2016/11/26/the-lefts-appalling-whitewashing-of-castros-legacy
------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------
"Fidel Castro's legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty, and the denial of fundamental human rights," President-elect Donald Trump said of the Cuban dictator's death.

You will hear some people today excuse Fidel Castro’s crimes by begging that he accomplished social goals. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn have already beclowned themselves on that front. They were merely the first.
Our own [former] President Barack Obama opted for washing his hands, choosing to neither praise Castro after his death Friday, nor to condemn the tragedy his communist dictatorship has inflicted on the Cuban people for 57 years. “History will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him,” said Obama, playing Pilate.

No social accomplishment, to be sure, could justify keeping an entire people hostage, denying them the right to elect their own leaders or exercise any human rights for half a century. But there weren’t any accomplishments. On the contrary, Castro destroyed a thriving society and imposed penury, either out of Marxist dogma or out of resentment that his out-of-wedlock birth had left him with a stigma among Cuba’s middle classes.

Cuba had problems in 1958, as many societies do. But on a number of fronts, it was the lead country in Latin America, or among the very top. Its social indicators were not just ahead of Asia and Africa, but also ahead of many European countries. Many Europeans, including half of all my great-grandparents, immigrated to Cuba in the 20th century—barely a century ago—seeking to improve their lives economically. They did, and their granddaughter, my mother, went to law school.

After 57 years of communism it is risible to think of a single European immigrating to Cuba to improve his fortunes. Risible in a dark, macabre way. That’s anecdotal, but the numbers back up what 2 million Cuban-Americans today (i.e., Cuban-born people who can speak freely) know to be true. A study by the State Department’s Hugo Llorens and Kirby Smith shows, for example, that in infant mortality, literacy rates, per capita food consumption, passenger cars per capita, number of telephones, radios, televisions, and many other indicators, Cuba led when Castro took over on New Year’s Eve 1958.
The United Nations statistics leave no doubt. In infant mortality, Cuba’s 32 deaths per 1,000 live births was well ahead of Japan, West Germany, Luxembourg, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain (40, 36, 39, 33, 34, 50, and 53 respectively), and many others.
In food consumption, in terms of calories per day, Cuba was ahead of all of Latin America except cattle-rich Argentina and Uruguay. In automobiles per 1,000 inhabitants, Cuba’s 24 was ahead over everyone in Latin America expect oil-producing Venezuela (27).
As for literacy rates, Cuba’s 76 percent in the late 1950s put it closely behind only Argentina, Chile, and Costa Rica. Giant Brazil’s percentage, by comparison, was 49 percent.
And Cuba’s gross domestic product per capita in 1959 was higher than those of Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, most of Latin America, Asia, and Africa, again according to U.N. statistics.
In most vital statistics, therefore, Cuba was on a par with Mediterranean countries and southern U.S. states.

And today? Castro’s communism has not just left Cubans economically pauperized, but politically bereft, a situation that Obama’s unilateral concessions to Castro’s little brother, the 85-year-old Raul, Cuba’s present leader, has only made worse.
According to the Cuban Committee for Human Rights and National Reconciliation, which is recognized by Amnesty International and Freedom House, so far this year there have already been over 8,505 political arrests during the first eight months. This represents the highest rate of political arrests in decades.
Meanwhile, we are in the midst of a new Cuban migration crisis. The United States is faced with the largest migration of Cuban nationals since the rafters of 1994. The number of Cubans fleeing to the United States in 2015 was nearly twice that of 2014. Some 51,000 Cubans last year entered the United States, and this year’s figures will easily surpass that. The numbers of Cuban nationals fleeing Cuba have now quintupled since Obama took office, when it was less than 7,000 annually.

President [-elect] Donald Trump has promised he will reverse Obama’s opening unless Raul Castro opens up Cuba politically. This Castro won’t do and there were reports today that dissidents are being rounded up and carted off. And so far, Trump’s statement on the “brutal dictator” Castro has been the moral one and the one closest to the mark: “Fidel Castro’s legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights.”

Today, therefore, will be a day for clarity. What world leaders say about the departed tyrant will reveal whether they have an inner moral compass or not.

#2950 (2/26) ASH WEDNESDAY: "You are But Dust, and to Dust you Shall Return - Lent for the Rest of Us"

ASH WEDNESDAY:"YOU ARE BUT DUST, AND TO DUST YOU SHALL RETURN - LENT FOR THE REST OF US" - John Stonestreet, Breakpoint.org, 02/26/20; https://www.breakpoint.org/you-are-but-dust-and-to-dust-you-shall-return/
As Western culture becomes more and more secular, or to use Charles Taylor’s fascinating word “disenchanted,” traditions and practices once largely normal seem more and more strange. Large families, choosing church over Little League, or smudged foreheads just aren’t as normal as they used to be, and the second glances or raised eyebrows they create reveal more than a confusion about the thing itself. In fact, I’m not sure there is a Christian observance that more directly collides with the widely accepted values of secularism than the “imposition of the ashes,” a tradition that goes back about ten centuries and marks the beginning of the season of Lent on the Church calendar.

Like Advent, the season of Lent is about preparation. Before Christmas, our Christian forbears thought it wise to prepare a bit, and that by diving deeply into Old Testament promises and prophecies we’d better understand the birth of Christ in the full context of redemptive history. So too, in Lent, our Christian forbears thought it wise to prepare for Holy week, especially for celebrating the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

A key distinction is that Lenten disciplines, beginning with Ash Wednesday’s reminder that “You are dust and to dust you shall return,” place our celebration of resurrection in the context of our humanity, both our mortality and our fallenness. Even if the church calendar and its accompanying disciplines is not part of your church tradition, these two aspects of our humanity deserve our focused, intentional, and extended reflection.

Of course, most Christians would quickly reply that, of course, sin and death affect us all post-Eden. The problem is, in a secular culture, these beliefs that are crucial to a Christian worldview can be subtly secularized in our own hearts and minds.Years ago, when my grandfather was dying, he suffered terribly for three or four months. In sorrow, I asked my pastor, “Why doesn’t God just take him?” I expected him to say something along the lines of, “Well, God has His ways, and His own timing,” but instead he said something I’ll never forget: “Because you grandfather needs to know his mortality before he meets his maker.”

What Ponce de Leon once sought in the waters of a Fountain of Youth, we still seek today via genetic engineering, eugenics, and other technologies. In other words, we seek control over this world and even over death itself. Despite our search, death remains the universal problem of the human condition, one that afflicts us all. A secular culture is led by the reality of death to fear death itself, so that we either attempt to control death or distract ourselves from the thought of it. As a result, we learn to live life in light of the moment, rather than eternity.
The reality of death should, instead, remind us to fear God. That after death, we will meet the maker of life, is worth pondering, not just at the moment of death, but constantly throughout our lives.

Theologian Craig Gay warned in his book “The Way of the Modern World” that many of us who believe in God live as if God were largely irrelevant to most of life. The reminder of our mortality in the words, “You are but dust and to dust you shall return,” is a wonderful antidote for what he called “practical” atheism.
Just like with the idea of mortality, our understanding of our own sinfulness is also under threat of being secularized in our own minds. In a culture committed, in the name of freedom, to removing the categories of “sin” or “guilt,” one quick to give away nearly universal “get-out-of-jail-free” cards in the name of sexual freedom, too many Christians lose any abhorrence for that which ought shock and shame us.

Perhaps this is why the salvation brought by Christ’s life, death, and resurrection is so often described as “a wonderful example of love and sacrifice” or “how to gain purpose and perspective,” but so rarely in the terms of judicial forgiveness and cosmic victory that Paul and Peter and Jesus Himself so often used. Being confronted with our own sinfulness is certainly no fun, but God graciously does it. After all, the cruelest thing to tell someone who’s not okay is that they are, as both secularized cultures and secularized churches too often do. Repentance is a gift, the only way forward for those on the edge of the moral abyss. It’s proof that God is kind, the Scriptures say.

We just don’t hear these things often enough. So, thank God for Lent.

#2949 (2/25) "What You Need to Know About 2 Major Pro-Life Bills in the Senate"

"WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 2 MAJOR PRO-LIFE BILLS IN THE SENATE" - Melanie Israel / @Melanie_Israel / February 24, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/02/24/what-you-need-to-know-about-2-major-pro-life-bills-in-the-senate [AS I SEE  IT: With these bills needing 60 votes in the Senate (why? - I don't know) in order to pass, it gives strong reason to be praying that we have a 60 pro-life Senate. May God so bless us in the coming elections in Nov.! - Stan]
It is a matter of public record, both in the United States and abroad, that some babies are born alive following attempted abortions. Because current law is insufficient to protect them, these infants are left vulnerable to neglect that can cause their deaths. (Photo: Getty Images)

This week, the Senate is set to vote on two pro-life bills widely supported by the American public—but that’s not the story radical pro-abortion activists are telling.

Both the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act enjoy widespread support with Americans across the political spectrum. But in Congress, where radical (and well-funded) pro-abortion actors like Planned Parenthood and NARAL have a stranglehold on the left, these perfectly reasonable bills are met with fierce opposition. Why?

Here’s what you need to know about the two bills.
     1. Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
The act would protect women and unborn children from gruesome late-term abortions performed after 20 weeks. The U.S. is one of only seven countries in the world that allows elective abortion past 20 weeks (5 months), alongside countries like China and North Korea. Scientific evidence suggests that by 20 weeks, a baby is capable of feeling excruciating pain during an abortion procedure. At the state level, over a dozen states across the country have enacted 20-week bills. Congress is overdue to pass the bill at the federal level.

   2. Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act
It is a matter of public record, both in the United States and abroad, that some babies are born alive following attempted abortions. Because current law is insufficient to protect them, these infants are left vulnerable to neglect that can cause their deaths—deaths that may have been preventable with adequate emergency care.
In 2002, President George W. Bush signed legislation that extended legal protection to infants born alive at any stage of development, including after an abortion. However, the 2002 law did not contain enforcement provisions.
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act augments current law by including criminal consequences for health care providers who violate the law, and it requires that proper medical care be given by the health care practitioner present if an infant is born alive. Treating a baby born after an attempted abortion with the same care provided to any other newborn should not be controversial in a civilized society.

These Bills Should Not Be Controversial
Knowing that the vast majority of Americans support federal abortion policy that is far more restrictive than the status quo, you would think that Congress could agree that the Pain-Capable bill would be a practical policy to reflect our nationwide consensus. But every time the bill has received a vote in the Senate, it has failed to amass the 60 votes necessary to proceed.
Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and other radical pro-abortion activists have spent many years establishing clout—politically and financially—on the left, and are unwilling to entertain even the slightest on late-term elective abortion. And the politicians beholden to them fall in line.

But what about the Born-Alive bill? Despite erroneous characterizations in the mainstream media, it isn’t even an “abortion bill.” It’s a bill that establishes that a living newborn baby who has survived an attempt on her life in the womb must be treated with appropriate medical care.
Critics tend to fall back on two main arguments: first, that such scenarios don’t happen, and second, that current law sufficiently protects these newborns. And critics are wrong on both counts. State and federal data acknowledges hundreds of such instances (that we know of). And while federal law acknowledges that infants who survive an abortion are “persons,” it contains no requirement that they receive care.
Furthermore, instances of abortionists like Kermit Gosnell are distinguishable from the issue at hand in the Born-Alive bill. Gosnell was convicted for actively killing newborns, not for failing to provide medical treatment to newborns. The Born-Alive bill addresses the act of passively “doing nothing” and allowing babies to die.

In any case, the abortion industry and its allies cannot allow the left to support the Born-Alive bill. Doing so would acknowledge the humanity of the unborn child, and present abortion for what it is: the intentional destruction of human life.

Senators will go on the record in support or opposition of two different policies. In doing so, they’ll be forced to answer two questions. First, are you willing to draw the line at elective late-term abortion? And second—especially if the answer to the first question was “no”—are you willing to draw the line anywhere? America’s federal abortion policy is radically out of step with how the vast majority of Americans [and the vast majority of nations]feel about the issue . The Senate has an opportunity to change that.

#2948 (2/24) "7 Reasons the Left's Hatred of Trump Is So Deep"

"7 REASONS THE LEFT'S HATRED OF TRUMP IS SO DEEP"Terry PaulsonTerry Paulson|Posted: Feb 24, 2020; https://townhall.com/columnists/terrypaulson/2020/02/24/7-reasons-lefts-hatred-n2561687

Like Wile E. Coyote learns over-and-over again, no matter what he does, the Roadrunner just keeps tweeting on down the road at record speed. They’ve worked to impeach Trump since he took office and finally achieved it, only to have him exonerated by the Senate. They’ve mocked him, his tweets, and his priorities. They’ve drowned him in negative media coverage. They’ve called him a narcissist, a tyrant, and an uncaring fraud. But nothing is working, and the rage in the social media just grows by the day as there are growing signs that no Democrat is in a position to stop his march to a second term.

Why such deep hatred?
   1. Nothing works in derailing this president, and it’s driving leftists crazy. From accusation after accusation spread by an anti-Trump media to flimsy articles of impeachment, their attacks miss the mark. Now, just months before an election, Trump’s supporters, like mad hornets, are ready to rush to the polls to give their verdict to the Democrats’ impeachment fiasco.

   2. Leftists realize that many voted for Trump because they wanted anyone but Hillary Clinton. But now, his supporters are amazed at how much this street-fighting outsider has been able to get done! He’s delivered what many past Republicans have just succeeded in talking about. From cutting taxes and regulations to stimulating our economy and from appointing conservative federal judges to fostering energy independence, supporters can’t wait to see what Trump can accomplish in a second term. The left is frustrated that Trump has delivered a track record that’s hard to beat.

   3. The left has run up against a president where name-calling doesn’t work. Trump doesn’t care if he’s not liked by the left or the “fake” news. His enemies keep trying to find something he’s done that will stick. But when leftists level an attack, it’s like water rolling off a duck’s back. His opponents look at each other in amazement with but one plea—“Quick! Go find something else before the election!”

   4. Trump bypasses the media and goes directly to the people. He’s not dependent upon a hostile media to get his message out. Trump’s tweets and rallies keep his faithful fed with the information he wants them to celebrate. He doesn’t let Democrats get away with their lies. Trump lets voters know that America is exceptional, that patriotism is good, that all lives matter, and that jobs matter to all races, genders, or classes.

   5. Trump is piece by piece dismantling the socialist, entitlement transformation President Obama started to build. With Democratic candidates moving further to the left and talking “democratic” socialism, President Trump has made it clear—"America will never be a socialist country!” The people who earn their way by working hard in America have a champion committed to protecting them from the selfish takers who would rather live off of someone else’s hard work.

   6. President Trump is taking on the task of getting rid of the “deep state” bureaucrats embedded in the federal government. The democratic stronghold of overpaid bureaucrats around Washington are afraid. He’s promised to fire those who are not necessary and end duplication of departments and programs. That means getting rid of more unnecessary regulations and the overpaid busybodies who enforce them.

   7. While Democrats talk about giving benefits to illegal aliens, President Trump talks about continuing to build his border wall and updating America’s immigration process. Citizenship counts and should not be granted easily. He values immigration and what legal immigrants should and can bring to our country to make America stronger but has no plans on making it easy on illegal immigrants.

In short, leftists are fuming. Their Trump Derangement Syndrome is giving them headaches that are showing no signs of going away. With his growing popularity and their uninspiring, progressive candidates, Democrats are feeling helpless and increasingly hopeless. If conservatives were facing a liberal president as effective in transforming America as Trump is in preserving it, we’d feel the same way. Let’s do everything we can to keep this man in office and, this election, give him control of the House and the Senate. He deserves four more years, and America’s future depends on it.

Women in India Saba* is a Christian widow and mother of three from a remote village in India. She’s part of a group of persecuted Christian women who set up a small dhaba (a cafeteria) to help them support their families. However, they are not able to earn a basic living from it yet. Our partners in the field have connected with the women to help them renovate, as well as provide resources and direction to help increase profits and sustain their business.
February 24 - Pray for the success of Saba’s cafeteria business and ask God to bless the work of her hands to help other persecuted believers in the area.

#2947 (2/23) "The Plague of Locusts, and What Christians Can (and Must) Do"

"THE PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS, AND WHAT CHRSITANS CAN (AND MUST) DO" - John Stonestreet and Roberto Rivera, Breakpoint.org, 02/21/20; https://breakpoint.org/the-plague-of-locusts-and-what-christians-can-and-must-do
At one point in its history, most likely in the century after the return from the Babylonian exile, a swarm of locusts descended on Judah and ate everything in sight. That is, after all, what locusts do. The calamity was the setting for the prophetic oracles contained in the Book of Joel. In the first part of the book, the prophet laments the damage done by the swarm and calls on God’s people to mourn, not only for their losses but also for their sins. If they do, the prophet proclaims, God will “restore the years the locusts have eaten.”

Locusts and leprosy are the quintessential biblical calamities, but few of us in the West have experienced either personally. In some parts of the world, they are far more familiar. In fact, right now, upwards of 13 million people in East Africa face famine as the result of locust swarms. Note that I said not “a swarm” but “swarms,” some covering more than 900 square miles and containing up to 80 million individual bugs. In one day they can consume as many crops as “would provide food for 35,000 people.”

This current plague of locusts originated in the southern Arabian Peninsula where heavy rainfall provided ideal breeding conditions and prevailing winds carried them to East Africa.
From there, the locusts spread into other areas, including South Sudan and the Turkana region of Kenya, both of which were already struggling with the effects of prolonged drought. By some estimates, if weather conditions are right, “the swarms could increase by 500 times come June.” And, making efforts to eradicate the swarms even more difficult is that one of their preferred breeding sites is controlled by the Somali Islamist group, al-Shabaab.

Still, in the midst of the suffering, there are lights in the darkness, such as the group “Mary’s Meals.” You may have guessed from the name that the group is named after Jesus’ mother. The founder of Mary’s Meals, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, is a devout Catholic who, before founding the group, spent years as a salmon farmer. After hearing about the refugee crisis created by the Bosnian War, Magnus and his brother Fergus drove a truck all the way from Scotland to Bosnia loaded with relief supplies. This initial running – or in this case, driving – towards what other people were fleeing led to the creation of Mary’s Meals, whose vision is simple: “every child receives one daily meal in their place of education.”
It may sound modest, but that one meal makes a huge difference long term, with a measurable impact on school enrollment, attendance, and performance, especially in poorer countries. Today, the group feeds 1.3 million children around the world, including 20,000 in Turkana. Seventeen percent of all school children in Malawi are fed by Mary’s Meals.
These efforts are in stark contrast to those of the national governments in places like Kenya, which are accused by critics of only thinking about the crisis areas during election time.

The actions of Christian groups like Mary’s Meals and others are pretty much all that stands between a lot of people and mass starvation, and that was true even before this new plague of locusts. A crisis of biblical proportions demands a response by God’s people: specifically, running into, not away from, the plague. Thank God, that’s what Christians have done throughout history, and thank God, that’s what is happening today.

But what can we do from so far away? Of course, we can pray. That matters, a lot. And, we can spread the word. Amazingly, people can watch cable news all day and not be aware of this calamity of biblical proportions. We can also urge our leaders to help those affected. Finally, we ourselves can be generous and support organizations like Mary’s Meals and others who provide this sort of care to those who need it the most.
