#3185 (10/31) PRO-LIFE SAT: "How COVID Could Push Us Further Toward Euthanasia"

"HOW COVID COULD PUSH US FURTHER TOWARD  EUTHANASIA" -  John Stonestreet and Roberto Rivera, Breakpoint.org, 10/28/20; https://breakpoint.org/how-covid-could-push-us-further-toward-euthanasia [AS I SEE IT: Could euthanaisa or at least some form of "death with dignity" be part of the "health care plan" the progressives are planning for America should they get their way in our government? Does it not seem like a way to "save" money for other socialist programs? Just asking. - Stan]

Last week, the Dutch government took yet another step down the very-slippery slope of euthanasia when the national health minister proposed that doctors should be permitted to euthanize “terminally ill” children under the age of thirteen. In a letter to the Parliament, he wrote, “In a small number of cases, palliative care isn’t sufficient . . . Because of that, some children suffer unnecessarily without any hope of improvement.”

Given the path the Netherlands (and Belgium for the matter) have been on for so long, such an appalling announcement shouldn’t surprise anyone, even if it is from someone tasked with national health. It was only a matter of time before countries killing the elderly, the infirm, and the preborn would also begin killing children outside of the womb… and all in the name of “compassion.”

While the United States has not been on the path nearly as long, we may find ourselves in a similar place before too long. If it happens, our failure to protect the vulnerable elderly during the COVID-19 epidemic may prove to give us more than a nudge in the wrong direction. Let me explain.

Approximately 220,000 Americans have reportedly died from COVID-19. Weary from lockdowns, changing headlines, and the blame game, it’s easy to lose sight of the scale of this tragedy. But we ought not miss just who is dying from the coronavirus. In the United States, people over 65 account for 80 percent of all COVID-19 deaths. On a state-by-state basis, the percentage ranges from over 90 percent in a handful of states to 70 percent in others. We might say these deaths largely resulted from a pre-existing condition, but I don’t mean co-morbidities. What I mean is that, even before COVID-19, Americans weren’t doing well caring for our elderly.

Theologian Stanley Hauerwas has written that hospitals should be “first and foremost a house of hospitality along the way of our journey with finitude… our sign that we will not abandon those who have become ill.” Instead, hospitals are mainly our “means of isolating the ill from the rest of us,” places where we can keep the reality of aging and death out of sight and out of mind. In recent Western culture, we handle old age and dying primarily by denial.

Denial becomes harder during a pandemic, of course. At the same time, two underlying conditions of our collective soul have been exposed. The first is our aversion to suffering.Dying from COVID-19 is often painful and, at least in how things have been handled thus far, nearly always lonely. Advocates of euthanasia and assisted suicide always insist, especially in a culture like ours that fails to see dignity in the midst of suffering, that so called “death with dignity” is a “compassionate” necessity. And thus, they will argue that it should be offered for the elderly who contract COVID.

The second condition is the financial one. Though we are always told that money won’t be a factor in end-of-life decisions, especially when it comes to insurance companies and government bureaucrats, studies continue to show that money is a consideration, especially for individuals who don’t want to be a “financial burden” on their families. The economic costs of COVID-19 are still being realized, as are the resulting financial pressures on decision makers. And, as we continue to see from the case of the Netherlands, once the principle is conceded that some lives are not worth living, the list of lives eligible for euthanasia only grows.

Christians must not have any part in this. In fact, we must push back on the culture of death anywhere and everywhere we can.Stanley Hauerwas once said that “…in a hundred years, if Christians are known as a strange group of people who don’t kill their children and don’t kill the elderly, we will have done a great thing.” I pray we are known for more than that, but certainly not less.

Because we know that God raised Jesus from the dead, we should also be known as those not afraid of aging and dying. We should be known for taking seriously the eternal value of every human life, from the moment of conception until natural death, even if doing so involves some measure of sacrifice on our part (and it will).

Finally, we should not be known as the ones jaded by tragedy or disaster. For the Christ-follower, hundreds of thousands of deaths should never become, to paraphrase Stalin, a “statistic.” When it does, the door is only opened for future evils.

#3184 (10/30) "Vote Trump; Save America"

"VOTE TRUMP; SAVE AMERICA" David Limbaugh: Oct 30, 2020; https://townhall.com/columnists/davidlimbaugh/2020/10/30/vote-trump-save-america-n2579045 [AS I SEE IT: Yes, this is a strongly stated article. But the consequences of voters NOT voting to re-elect President Trump are truly grave. No, it may not be the end of the U.S. but it will certainly only push this country even more rapidly in the direction of truly trasforming this country as it was founded. The massive crowds that have continued to turn out to support this president may not agree with each of his tweets or action but they are generally familiar with how his leadership has strengthened America over the past 4 years as well as advanced efforts for peace around the world as few modern presidents have been able to do. His stand for the unborn, for religious liberty, for Israel, as well as economic policies that have led to tens of millions prospering are not the work of a failed leader. My hope and prayer is that enough Americans understand this and President Trump will be re-elected. - Stan]

We are just days from the most important election in modern times, and sanctimonious scolds are still telling conservatives that they're immoral for supporting the main person fighting to prevent this nation's destruction. Seriously? Your shaming isn't working. We don't believe we are betraying our values for standing with the person who is pursuing policies that will sustain America's liberty tradition and opposing those that will enslave and impoverish us.

You can force-feed us op-ed after op-ed from well-respected Christian theologians urging us to vote against President Trump because you apparently believe he's Satan's spawn. But your pleas will fall flat because, unlike you, we see clearly the threats we face to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and, yes, even Christian values.

Ask yourself this: If, when crafting our Constitution, the framers anticipated that a man like Donald Trump might eventually become president -- a man whose quirks bother some people to distraction and irrationality -- would they have scrapped the whole system and opted for political tyranny and economic socialism?

Heavens, no, but that's essentially what you're asking us to do. No, thank you. We are not about to abandon the ideas we believe in because some of you have made a virtue out of hating and vilifying this president and demonizing the rest of us who disagree with you. We are not about to surrender to a leftist agenda of abortion on demand; lawlessness in our streets; bankrupting and unworkable environmental radicalism; the end of the oil industry; socialism; gender anarchy; the obliteration of our freedoms of speech and religion; and a weak United States because you have become unwitting allies of sinister forces determined to realize these infernal goals.

One popular theologian insists that a man of Trump's character would lead us to such horrors as abortion, arguing that his policies are not as important as his reflecting good values. This is delusional on its face. How can you argue that this person you love to judge and condemn is likely to lead us away from our values -- life, liberty and property -- when he is already upholding those values?

Let's be real. We are all sinners -- including the most pious among us, who, of all people, should have that truth emblazoned on their spirits. The indictment against Trump's character is not the one-sided case you think it is. But many of you are so blinded by your hatred that you can't see his positive attributes, the wonderful things he's doing for this country and the evil ideas he is opposing.

For four years, we've heard that Trump is the repository of evil in the world, and we're well aware of the complaints against him. But we've also seen a man who genuinely loves this country and who is fighting, scratching and kicking 24 hours a day for almost all things conservatives believe in. He is dedicated to keeping it strong so that we can meet all internal and external challenges to our security and domestic tranquility.

No president has ever been subjected to the incessant slander leveled at him, the relentless daily assault that would drive most mortals to a permanent fetal position. Much of it has been outright lies. But he shrugs it off and spends every waking moment addressing the nagging problems we face and combatting the forces who are determined to divide us on race, gender and economic status, and to burn the nation down to make way for their quixotic socialist utopia.

So many of the attacks leveled against him have been orchestrated by a monolithic liberal media that has abandoned any pretense of fairness and objectivity. The media is not only a hell-born hydra for the Democratic Party; it is outright dishonest and censorious. Even if you disagree with every conservative policy, you surely can't be comfortable with the liberal media and social media conspiring to suppress conservative speech -- not if you still love America and what has always made it unique. If you think this country can long survive with such tyrannical behavior, if you think Donald Trump represents a greater threat to this nation than people who facilitate such despotism, then we're on different planets.

The uninterrupted barrage against Trump has poisoned people's minds and hearts. Much of the case against him is based on lies and half-truths. I don't believe Trump is a racist, and even his worst critics are hard-pressed to deny that his policies have improved the lives of minorities. Reporters, for example, constantly ask him to renounce white supremacy, when he has never endorsed it -- no matter how many times they scream otherwise. When he complies and denounces it yet again, they say they don't believe him. Speaking of character, bearing false witness is hardly a trifling sin.

This is no longer Democrats versus Republicans. It is an existential struggle for the survival of the United States as founded. I earnestly appeal to my Democratic friends who don't subscribe to the radical leftist agenda that has swallowed their party. I appeal to never-Trump Republicans who, because of a disorienting obsession, are fighting against the policies and values they've supported their entire lives. You never-Trumpers have to wonder which of us has changed, given that more than 95 percent of Republicans disagree with you.

If the frail and rapidly failing Joe Biden becomes president, the nation will likely never be the same again, whether or not he is quickly replaced by the radical Kamala Harris. Forbid it, almighty God.

#3183 (10/29) "Philadelphia Riots Another Case of Street Violence Used to Advance Radical Political Agendas"

"PHILADELPHIA RIOTS ANOTHER CASE OF STREET VIOLENCE USED TO ADVANCE RADICAL POLITICAL AGENDA" James Carafano / @JJCarafano / October 28, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/10/28/philadelphia-riots-are-another-case-of-street-violence-used-to-advance-radical-political-agendas [AS I SEE IT: What this article doesn't point out is that the rioting we are seeing is being driven by the political LEFT. Further, if there is rioting that follows should there be a Biden win, it will not be done by those on the Right but by those of the LEFT embolden to act with even more violence. - Stan]

In Kenosha, Portland, Seattle, and Chicago, city officials have tolerated criminal activity performed by mobs for politically motivated reasons. Philadelphia appears to be the next hotspot for mob violence to go unchecked. Pictured: A barricade is set on fire during a night of looting and violence in Philadelphia on Oct. 27. (Photo: Gabriella Audi/AFP/Getty Images)

Like the replay of a bad movie, a law enforcement incident in Philadelphia triggered an excuse for violence and looting. It remains to be seen whether the City of Brotherly Love will become the next Kenosha, Wisconsin, where city officials moved quickly to restore order and seek state and federal support—though sadly after 48 hours of opportunistic looting, violence, and destruction devastated the city.

Or perhaps Philadelphia will be the next Portland, Seattle, or Chicago, where systemic attacks seem to be a daily occurrence. Police in Philadelphia are fully capable of restoring peace. The open question is whether the mayor and Larry Krasner, the former defense attorney-turned elected rogue prosecutor, will do their job and hold people accountable for their crimes.

When local, state, and federal governments work together, act quickly, and demonstrate no tolerance for organized violence to advance radical agendas, communities are kept safe and equal protection under the law is afforded for all citizens. On the other hand, when local officials, the media, and politicians ignore, excuse, normalize, and enable violence, everyday Americans pay the price.

There is a plague sweeping this country that many don’t want to talk about: The deliberate use of street violence to advance radical political agendas, often under a smoke screen of campaigning for civil liberties. The evidence of organized criminal activity at the root of the outbreaks in American cities is mounting.

The list of those enabling this violence sadly includes some public officials, who are principally responsible for ensuring public safety. For example, a growing threat to peaceful communities is “rogue prosecutors,” former criminal defense attorneys recruited and funded by liberal billionaire backers, who—once elected—abuse their office by refusing to prosecute entire categories of crimes. These rogue prosecutors are usurping the power of the legislature in the process, and ignoring victims’ rights—all to advance their politics.

Baltimore is a perfect  example. Since being sworn into office, under the watch of Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby. Rogue prosecutors fuel street violence by refusing to prosecute rioters and looters. When confronted with the rising crimes rates, Mosby called the statistics “rhetoric.”

The only way to break the cycle of violence is for local and state officials to work with each other, and if necessary, the federal government. They need to stop enabling the destruction of property and lives on their streets, and start investigating and prosecuting the individuals (and organizations) behind the riots. It’s time to start shaming and calling out the media, politicians, and advocates who excuse and normalize the violence.

There is a proven action plan for making our streets safe. It is past time for officials to start following this blueprint. There is no time—zero time to waste. There are already fears of more violence in our streets, regardless of the outcome of the national elections.

In my hometown of Washington, D.C., downtown buildings already are boarding up in anticipation of violence on our streets after the election. If Trump wins, violence. If Biden wins, violence. This makes no sense, and it’s time for it to stop. It is time for every official and public figure, every political party, in every part of the country to publically reject violence on American streets as a legitimate form of protected speech. Violence is not protected speech, period.

The notion of deliberately destroying the lives and property of our neighbors to advance a radical political agenda is abhorrent. American leaders—of all stripes—should stand up now as one and reject these violent acts. It has gone on for too long, well before the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Leaders in Philadelphia and across America must take a principled stand to demand the end to this violence, and they need to do it before the election. In one voice, they should demand: “Leave our streets alone.”

#3182 (10/28) "America’s Teenagers Are Losing Their Religion"

"AMERICA'S TEENAGERS ARE LOSING THEIR RELIGION" - Timothy Goeglein / October 22, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/10/22/americas-teenagers-are-losing-their-religion [NOTE: This article is a great follow-up to this past Sunday's post #3179. I encoureage you to also read that post if you have not already. Stan]

Recent research from the Pew Research Center shows that teens are less religious today than in prior generations. (Photo: pastorscott/Getty Images)

A few weeks ago, the Pew Research Center came out with its most recent survey on the faith of today’s teenagers. While there are a few nuggets of hope amidst the pages and pages of data, there is one message that does seem to be coming through loud and clear: America’s teenagers are losing their religion.

There are several potential reasons for this. Today’s teenagers are growing up in a society that is increasingly hostile to faith, especially regarding faith-based values, and the social cost of being identified as religious amongst one’s peers is getting higher with each passing day. Christian pollster George Barna documented this in a recent survey that found religious teenagers hesitant to use the words “evangelism” and “convert” because they are fearful of being branded as “intolerant” of other beliefs.

Secondly, many churches tend to focus on the older end of their membership spectrum and leave those who are younger to fend for themselves. When there is not a support system or sense of community amongst one’s peers, teenagers and young adults tend to drift elsewhere and away from the church, with many never coming back.    Sadly, the result is often aging congregations and disenfranchised youth. Not a good scenario for the long-term health of the church or overall religious faith in our nation.

Finally, this could be a sign of how the continued deterioration of the family and rampant secularization impacts the church, just as it is affects greater society. Why? Because, as the Pew survey points out, one of the main reasons that children remain in the faith is because they are in intact homes with two believing parents. As it has been said, faith, and the values that accompany it, are “caught, not taught,” and if mom and dad aren’t going to church, or there is not a mom or a dad to model faith to them, there is nothing for teenagers to catch unless they encounter some influence outside the home.

The report offers a glimmer of encouragement by indicating that those teens who do live with faithful parents, for the most part, continue to identify with their parent’s faith and attend church with them. This is particularly true with evangelical families. These families tend to be tighter knit and remain intact with a mother and father throughout a young person’s childhood and teenage years.  In addition, evangelical families, and especially fathers, take the practice of their faith more seriously throughout the week, unlike other families who may see their faith as simply being a Sunday morning exercise to check off the weekly to-do list like grocery shopping. Families with fathers who are active in their faith are more likely to have children that continue on in the faith.

But once you get outside evangelical homes, the glimmer starts to dimPerhaps the most alarming statistic, and the one that shows the pernicious influence of our increasingly secularized culture, is that one-third of 13- to 17-year-olds profess to be “religious nones.” In the past, this sort of drift happened after teenagers left the home and entered secular universities, where they either embraced faith or would drift away as they faced temptations or if their faith came under withering attack. This trend in “religious nones” mirrors the rising number of adults who profess no religious faith. What begins in the teenage years often carries over into adulthood. And unfortunately, as often happens, some individuals are proposing the wrong solutions to the problem.

The downward trend in religious faith in America, particularly among the old mainline denominations, started to occur when they drifted away from preaching truth to embrace “social justice.” Without absolute truth as an anchor to fortify one’s faith, the church became nothing more than just another philanthropic group or social club of like-minded adherents without a compelling reason to be a member. Sadly, many are calling for the church to repeat this mistake and forsake truth to reach younger generations. These voices are recommending the church embrace a bevy of trendy social issues and concerns to entice young churchgoers.

Yet, true social justice only occurs from a citizenry that embraces the truth of Scripture—in particular, that we are all made “imago Dei” (in the image of God) and thus all human beings should be treated with dignity and respect. The “social justice” drift of the past sixty years has only left empty pews, often with a few gray-haired individuals scattered across an increasingly cavernous sanctuary.

Without absolute truth, which is the one thing that differentiates the church from other secular organizations, I am fearful that we will continue to see teenagers and adults continue to drift away from religious faith. Without strong families and involved parents, teenagers will look elsewhere for direction in their lives, often to a world that wants to give them all the wrong guidance.

If we want America’s teenagers to start gaining back their faith, perhaps it is time we start here—through biblical teaching and faithful families. Because if we return to those things, then true social justice will occur as well, and teenagers once again will see the church as their own community rather than just the community of their parents and grandparents.
