PRAISES AND PRAYER REQUESTS:

ATTENTION: TODAY is the 14th day of the 30 days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. (see link below for resource material you can download.) Please join me in focusing your prayers EVERY DAY for these over one billion people who need to hear the gospel of Jesus.[NOTE: 1) You can download a  page of helpful basic information about Islam and Ramadan at: http://www.opendoorsusa.org/downloads/pdf-downloads/Islam_reference_guide-1.pdf ; and 2) The following is from a 30-day prayer guide you can download at: http://www.opendoorsusa.org/downloads/pdf-downloads/2013-ramadan-prayer-calendar-1.pdf (The following is from that prayer guide.)
July 24 – 16th Day of Ramadan - JESUS (Mali) “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21) Mali, a secular state, has traditionally offered relative freedom for Christians. Then, in April 2012, the independent Islamic state of Azawad was established in the north. Most Christians fled before Islamists took over and destroyed churches; in an attempt to eradicate all traces of Christianity. For the few believers who remain, pray that their life in Jesus will be a witness during Ramadan, drawing unbelievers to Him, and saving them from the darkness of Islam.

"Angry Islamists Turn Wrath on Egypt's Christians,"  By George Thomas, CBN News Sr. Reporter http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2013/July/Angry-Islamists-Turn-Wrath-on-Egypts-Christians/  Friday, July 12, 201 - "Egyptian Christians are facing growing retaliation by angry Islamists for opposing ousted President Moham3med Morsi. His supporters say Christian leaders were behind his removal from office....On Thursday, the body of a Christian merchant was found decapitated in a cemetery. Last Saturday, a Coptic Christian priest was shot by gunmen in an outdoor market. Also, days after the military coup that removed Morsi from office, Muslim extremists in southern Egypt burned dozens of Christian homes and stabbed four believers to death. "It's part of the Brotherhood's mobilization that they are targeting Christians, that they are renouncing them as behind this. If the Brotherhood is able to portray what happened as a Christian-dominated or Christian-driven protest, then they get to gain massive support in the streets," Tadros explained.PRAY for the nation of Egypt, as it faces a crucial  moment, 1) that the recent events would result in its becoming a true democracy and NOT an Islamic state; 2)  that the peoples' freedoms, in particular the religious freedom of its minorities (specifically its oppressed Christians) would be protected; 3) for peace and stability to return; 4) that the U.S. will effectively reach out to the new government, and 3) for safety for Americans living in Egypt

"Putting the Royal Child in Perspective: Every Baby is Royal in God’s Eyes,"-  by Steven Ertelt | London| LifeNews.com | 7/22/13; http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/22/putting-the-royal-child-in-perspective-every-baby-is-royal-in-gods-eyes/· [Join me in praying that ALL the members of the royal family of Great Britain (and all the British people as well) will come to understand the gospel of Jesus and place their faith in Him.]

While the world [awaited]  the birth of Kate Middleton’s royal child, pro-life advocates have sent out tweets and comments today putting the heralded birth into perspective. Bryan Kemper, the head of the pro-life youth organization Stand True, summed it up best.
“Every baby is royal in God’s eyes,” he said.“If only the world would be so excited for the single mom with no job living in a shack in the ghetto who is in labor right now,” he explained. “If only the world was so worried about the drug addict prostitute who is in labor with a baby who will be born addicted to crack. No, most of the world would say those kids should have been aborted (murdered) months ago.”
“What if Kate would have decided to kill her baby, I wonder how the world would react?” he asked. “I just wish we would welcome EVERY baby with this much joy, love and care and understand they are all royal in God’s eyes.”
"Obama Judicial Pick Cornelia Pillard: Abortion Needed to “Free Women From Maternity” - by Tony Perkins | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 7/22/13  http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/22/obama-judicial-pick-cornelia-pillard-abortion-needed-to-free-women-from-maternity/  [PRAY that this all judicial nominees will get careful scrutiny before they are considered for approval; may all those who are anti-life as this nominee be soundly rejected.]

A lot can happen between now and Congress’s August recess — and that’s exactly what conservatives should be concerned about. Senate Democrats seem to be banking on the fact that Americans are on vacation and not paying attention, because liberal leaders are trying to slip in a quiet confirmation hearing for Cornelia “Nina” Pillard. A Georgetown law professor, Pillard is the President’s latest nominee to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals — and only the second one since President George W. Bush to wait less than two months for a hearing.

Why the rush? Ed Whalen of NRO’s Bench Memos suspects that Pillard (who’s been described to him as “less moderate” than the most activist liberal in appellate court history) wouldn’t survive intense scrutiny. The hurry, Whalen warns, “seems designed to prevent a careful review of their records. Obama himself has taken forever to make nominations to the D.C. Circuit, and that court remains underworked, so it is difficult to see the justification for the sudden rush.”

Unfortunately for Americans, the Senate won’t have to dig too deep to uncover some of Pillard’s shockers. Among some of her greatest hits, the former Deputy Assistant Attorney General argues that abortion is necessary to help “free women from historically routine conscription into maternity.” As if her militant feminism wasn’t apparent enough, she takes the opportunity in some of her writings to slam anyone who opposes the abortion-contraception mandate as “reinforce[ing] broader patterns of discrimination against women as a class of presumptive breeders.”

A mother of two, Nina wrote a 2011 paper, “Against the New Maternalism,” which argues that by celebrating motherhood, society is creating a “self-fulfilling cycle of discrimination.” Those ideas bleed into Pillard’s extreme pro-abortion views, which suggest that technology is somehow manipulating Americans to consider the personhood of the unborn. In one of her most jaw-dropping statements, the President’s nominee even criticizes the ultrasound. She believes it manufactures “deceptive images of fetus-as-autonomous-being that the anti-choice movement has popularized since the advent of amniocentesis.”

As crazy and outrageous as her other comments are, this one is a denial of basic biology! She actually rejects modern science on human development because it conflicts with her hard-core ideology. If that doesn’t disqualify someone from the second most prestigious court in America, I’m not sure what does. Except maybe this: Pillard is so fiercely opposed to abstinence education that she has said publicly she would declare it unconstitutional. In “Our Other Reproductive Choices,” Nina argues that abstinence-only curriculum is “permeated with stereotyped messages and sex-based double standards” which, in her mind, makes it “vulnerable to an equal protection challenge.”

“Egalitarian sex education… should reaffirm the value of sexual pleasure for females as well as males.” She argues that too many Christian conservatives see “men’s sex drive and sexual satisfaction [as] privileged, while women’s is demonized or ignored.” That just proves how little Pillard knows about the people she’s criticizing. FRC, ironically, just made quite a few headlines talking about sexual satisfaction — and how it’s greater for both men and women when enjoyed in the confines of a lifelong, monogamous, man-woman marriage.

America can’t afford to give a lifetime appointment to a radical ideologue! Contact your senators and urge them to vote no on Nina Pillard.

July 23 – 15th Day of Ramadan -  IMMANUEL (Maldives) - “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) - Immanuel, Hebrew for “God with us,” seemingly does not apply to Maldivians. To be a citizen of Maldives is to be Muslim; the government claims the country is 100% Islamic. Without access to Bibles, all that is known about Jesus is found in the Qur’an. As you pray during Ramadan for the nation of Maldives, pray for a divine knowledge of salvation, through Jesus, to be known to its citizens – for this country to be claimed by Immanuel, “God with us.”

"Detroit Bankruptcy Is No Time for Federal Bailouts," by Alison Acosta Fraser On July 19, 2013

The city of Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection yesterday with some $18 billion in debt, making it the largest municipal bankruptcy in the United States. There will inevitably be calls for the federal government to bail out Detroit. Washington should set a firm precedent now that it will not bail out reckless city, county, or state governments. Detroit must solve its own problems, and sadly, bankruptcy is the last mechanism to force city leaders to do that.

Detroit’s bankruptcy filing should come as no shock; the city’s decline has been decades in the making. Detroit’s financial and economic decline took root in the manufacturing decline in America. But the decades of continual decline that have followed, in which the city lost more than 60 percent of its population, stem from the city’s precisely wrong response to the manufacturing decline.
Rather than implement sound financial and economic policies and promote a vibrant private sector to help rejuvenate the city, Detroit’s policymakers attempted to shift resources from the private sector to the public sector, raised taxes, and increased regulations—all while fostering an ever-expanding city government.

Sadly, city leaders took their cues from the auto industry by growing government through generous promised but unaffordable future pension and health care benefits. In fact the biggest share of Detroit’s debt comes from these unaffordable promises: $6 billion in health and other post-employment benefits for retirees and $3 billion in pensions.

For decades, Detroit sustained itself through the usual suspects of bad fiscal management: unaffordable borrowing, state grant schemes, raising taxes, and deferring public pension contributions rather than cutting city spending. But Detroit’s tragic downward cycle has reached its end. With all tax rates close to their statutory max and dismal public services that discourage individuals and businesses from remaining in or coming to Detroit, the city simply cannot continue to fund its operations and service its debt.

It has been rumored that Detroit’s creditors and pensioners may receive mere pennies on the dollar to what they are owed. Certainly there will be cries of “unfairness.” But a federal bailout—whereby taxpayers in fiscally responsible cities and states have to pay for the services and promises made by city and state governments that waived such discipline for decades—would be far more unfair.

What’s more, a federal bailout of Detroit would set a dangerous precedent for future state and local bailouts. Detroit is not the only city facing serious financial trouble; there are many more municipalities for whom bankruptcy seems the inevitable outcome. And if bailouts really were a panacea, then state bailouts from the 2009 stimulus legislation should have put every state on firm fiscal footing.

All bailouts do is punish those state and local governments that are good stewards and enable those that are not to continue profligate fiscal policy and poor management. Bankruptcy, and the threat it carries, forces government leaders to confront and solve their own problems.

Washington should also learn its own lessons from Detroit. Total national debt is over $17 trillion, bigger than the entire U.S. economy. Beyond huge growth in nearly all federal programs, future spending will be driven to the breaking point by our own federal retiree spending programs—Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Rather than discouraging other troubled state and local governments from getting their fiscal houses in order through bailouts or other support, federal lawmakers should fix their own fiscal problems.

July 22 – 14th Day of Ramadan - I AM (Yemen) -  “’Very truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’” (John 8:58) - Both Christianity and Judaism were introduced into Yemen by the fourth century AD, but nearly all the Jewish population has now emigrated. Islam was introduced into the region in about 630 AD, and the first mosques built in Yemen still exist. Since the late seventh century, Yemen has been dominated by Islam. "Why Does the AARP Hate Seniors?," -  Erick Erickson  | http://www.redstate.com/2013/07/16/why-does-the-aarp-hate-seniors/

We know the AARP is typically left-leaning and sided with the Obama Administration on Obamacare and other policies that will wind up hurting seniors. But now it seems they’re siding with the far-left environmental movement to put people out of work and raise energy prices — something that has a direct effect on seniors with fixed incomes.
The AARP and Sierra Club worked together to stall nuclear energy legislation in Iowa. They claimed the legislation would hurt seniors when, in reality, the legislation would have incentivized low cost nuclear energy production in Iowa. The AARP joined with the Sierra Club in Mississippi too. The issue was different, but the operation was the same. The environmental group couldn’t get its way so it brought in the AARP to scare seniors, who in turn called legislators. They did it in New York and North Carolina and Virginia among others. Each time, as the Sierra Club fell behind in its goals, it picked up the blue hair phone, called the AARP, and had them scare the mess out of seniors.
But it’s not just the Sierra Club.
With other groups, including Green Peace, the AARP is going all in against global warming. In the 2007 AARP magazine, they painted a picture of earth’s destruction. So while they advocate policies that would make today’s seniors’ grandkids unemployed, they also want seniors to know they’re destroying the planet for those unemployed grandkids. But, this is important because the trees are screaming.
Worse still, in going all in with left-wing groups, the AARP is seeking to undermine seniors’ access to cheap power. Remember, the left has every incentive to raise prices on power by getting rid of cheap coal energy, opposing nuclear energy, etc. That puts the AARP on both sides of the issue as it tries to hurt energy producers. For example, the AARP aggressively fights rate increases, as you’d expect from a group claiming to represent millions on fixed income. It has watchdog groups that harass utility regulators around the country. From Oklahoma to Georgiato Louisiana, the AARP wants seniors on “Watchdog” teams to watch regulators in the power sector. Of course, they side with liberal interests and turn those watch dogs into attack dogs.
Check out this video of a Greenpeace activist admitting as much: [go to link page noted above]
The AARP made $2.8 billion supporting Obamacare’s cuts to medicare. Now it’s siding with Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, and others to oppose coal, gas, and nuclear power. It is not an advocacy group for seniors. Rather it is just another liberal interest group masquerading as caring about seniors.

"Our 'Godless Constitution' - The Complicated Truth" - By: Eric MetaxasJuly 16, 2013 - http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/breakpoint-commentaries-archive/entry/13/22824?spMailingID=6557271&spUserID=MTMyMjM2ODE5OQS2&spJobID=78409373&spReportId=Nzg0MDkzNzMS1

This Fourth of July, I opened up the New York Times, and whammo! I found an extremely misleading ad sponsored by the Freedom From Religion Foundation.  “Celebrate Our Godless Constitution,” it read. The ad featured pictures of six founding fathers, and cherry-picked quotes that made it appear that these men were die-hard atheists—or at least, did not approve of Christianity influencing our nascent nation's government.

Now, it's quite true our Constitution is secular; the founders were well aware of what can happen when kings and countries force a particular religion on its citizens. Think Iran today.
But there's a big difference between believing a Constitution should be secular, and believing that religion—in this case, Christianity—should have no influence on one's country and its laws.  Five of the six founders listed in the ad strongly believed that America would not survive if her people were godless.

For instance, John Adams warned in 1798, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” George Washington shared this view. In his Farewell Address, the old general said, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”  And, he added, “Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

Benjamin Franklin—no doubt a rather worldy man—urged participants in the Constitutional Convention to pray, because, he said, “the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”

While James Madison, like Franklin were against a state-imposed religion, as of course I am, our fourth president also noted that “before any man can be considered as a member of civil society, he must be considered as a subject of the governor of the universe”—that is, God.

So while the Constitution cannot be considered a religious document, many of our founders’ religious views deeply informed their thinking about the kind of government America should embrace. To suggest otherwise is intellectually dishonest.

They also considered freedom of religion so important that they enshrined it in First Amendment to the Constitution. This includes the right to bring our beliefs into the public square to influence our fellow citizens on issues like slavery, as antebellum believers did, and abortion, as Christians in Texas recently did, and as many are trying to do with marriage.

Ironically, the New York Times itself revealed how silly and misleading the Freedom from Religion Foundation ad is just a few pages later. Every Fourth of July, it reprints the Declaration of Independence—and kudos to them for doing it.Allow me to read from the text: “We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America... [appeal] to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions.” But wait, there's more! The Declaration’s signers wrote that they were acting “with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence.”

We need to help our kids understand the complicated truth about religion and America's founders—and with “firm reliance” appeal to God to both bless America, and to forgive the sins of our nation. Because Franklin was right: God does govern the affairs of men.

FURTHER READING AND INFORMATION - While it’s true that our nation is and always has been a secular one, that does not mean that we should justify disregarding the Christian roots of our government and culture.  There is a push today to forget our country’s Christian heritage; it is our job to push back. If you have kids, be sure to teach them about the influence Christian principles had in the lives of our founders. And, while you’re at it, be sure to read up on the topic yourself, starting with the links below.

Blood Bought Freedom -

InsideWashington- Upheaval results in more persecution of Egyptian Christians, By Dave Ficere,  http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/issues

“Liberty must at all hazards be supported. We have a right to it, derived from our Maker. But if we had not, our fathers have earned and bought it for us, at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasure, and their blood.” – John Adams
“We cannot have our freedom without blood. It is the price, what can we do?” – Egyptian Christian activist Nirvana Mamdouh
Earlier this month the world watched in stunned silence as the Egyptian military rose up to oust President Mohammed Morsi, replacing him with a civilian government. Buried beneath the headlines was the role Egypt’s minority Christian community played in the uprising.Coptic Christians along with the other Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox communities played a “significant role in raising the masses,” according to Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy. Jasser, in an interview with The Christian Post, also predicted that Egypt’s historic Coptic community and the other groups will “play a huge role" in the next phase of Egyptian politics.
Jasser’s assessment about the importance of the Christian community in the Egyptian uprising is shared by Steven S. Bucci, at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. “I just think that the fate of the Christian communities is an under reported and under evaluated situation,” he said. “I’m not saying they’re more important than the other communities, but they’re more at risk than other communities.”
Bucci’s assessment of the risk has proved to be prophetic. Dozens of Egyptian Christians have lost their lives since the beginning of the 2011 revolution that toppled former leader Hosni Mubarak and led to the Morsi presidency. In addition, others have suffered constant harassment or violence and had their churches torched. Human rights organizations say that some Coptic women have been beaten, compelled to wear hijabs, or forcibly converted to Islam.
In a recent headline, even the liberal-leaning Associated Press reported that Christians are “paying the price for their activism,” citing a story about what they called “a mob of Muslim extremists” who chased, captured and beat a Christian businessman and his nephew. The 41-year-old man was killed, while his nephew survived with only shoulder and head injuries.
While the influential Muslim Brotherhood has publicly stood against the targeting of Coptic Christians, the violence has continued. Recently, in the south-central Egyptian tourist city of Luxor one person was killed and 23 homes torched. A Coptic Christian priest was shot and killed last week in the coastal city of El Arish in one of several attacks purportedly led by Islamist insurgents.
Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., after initially backing Morsi following his election, the Obama administration has been strangely quiet about the recent uprising, except to publicly state that what happened in Egypt can’t be considered a “coup.” According to former Pentagon official Michael Rubin, the Egyptian uprising has put the White House in a precarious situation. “We can’t call it a military coup because U.S. law forbids giving assistance when an elected government is overthrown in a coup,” he says. “President Obama is like a gambler who is always hesitant to call his bets until he sees the cards on the table,” Rubin explained.
Middle East consultant Andrew Doran is also troubled by the administration’s policies in the region. In the case of Egypt, Doran says, it “fits into a deeply troubling pattern that has emerged in this administration – namely, the tendency to tolerate extremism where moderate alternatives exist. In Iran, Turkey, and Egypt, the Obama administration has aligned itself with Islamists and against the revolutionary proponents of secularism, liberalism, and pluralism.”
Doran says it’s up to outside voices to speak up on behalf of Egypt’s Christian community. Opining in National Review, he wrote:
"Those who cherish freedom of conscience and religion should stand in solidarity with the most vulnerable in the Middle East, especially its Christians – the region’s most powerful symbol of pluralism. To speak out on behalf of Christians in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East is to be in solidarity with those…who long for secular governance and the universal values recognized in America’s Declaration of Independence."
In light of what’s happening in Egypt, pray:
  • For protection for Egypt’s Christian community as they continue to speak out boldly
  • For America’s leaders, especially those who make foreign policy decisions
  • For democracy to reign in Egypt with a lessening of the Muslim Brotherhood’s influence
