"Surprised by Joy" - Life is more than survival of the fittest: a response to Richard Dawkins.
By Matthew Hennessey, AUGUST 23, 2014;http://www.nationalreview.com/article/386086/surprised-joy-matthew-hennessey [AS I SEE IT : This is the the most awesome response I've heard to the evil of utilitarian thinking that so pervades our society and so many others. There were many times while reading this I just wanted to cheer and applaud the writer. I  trust you will also enjoy this incredible read. P.S. - I do hope you got to view the pictures in yesterday's post (#989) of children returning to school. Esp. as you view the younger ones, I hope you are struck as I am that EVERY DAY in AMERICA, 3,000 (about 1,000 African-American) unborn babies are murdered by abortionists. Tragically, each of those babies will NOT be going to school one day. - Stan]

(Dreamstime)
Every once in a while people let their guard down and say what they really think. For Richard Dawkins, [a recent]Wednesday was one of those days.

In an extraordinary moment of public honesty, Dawkins, the British evolutionary biologist and militant atheist, wrote on Twitter that “it would be immoral to bring [a child with Down syndrome] into the world if you have the choice.” It was a statement that no doubt delighted the utilitarian philosopher Peter Singer, his friend and fellow traveler, who has advocated the killing of disabled infants on the grounds that they are not rational and self-conscious beings. “We have begun to think in terms of quality of life, instead of all life equally being sacred. That’s why it is logical to now start thinking about severely defective babies, and whether it is always wrong to kill them,” Singer told a journalist in 2004.

Does such talk frighten you? It does me. My eight-year old daughter Magdalena has Down syndrome. She falls into the category of people Peter Singer would like to see dead. I fall into the category of people Richard Dawkins considers immoral. How upside-down these guys are. It’s like an ethical Bizzaro World, where all the cold, heartless, smart guys with the fanciest degrees and the most fashionable eyeglasses look with utter disdain on the slightly different, slightly imperfect, slightly vulnerable people. God save us from utilitarian philosophers and evolutionary biologists.

Richard Dawkins is a man of logic, and his tweet makes sense if you view babies as personal accessories or interchangeable units of economic utility. But logic has its limits. Life is more than survival of the fittest. Sometimes it’s a mysterious and beautiful ballet. Other times it’s a painful and confusing crawl through the darkness. There is sudden despair and surprising joy. Logic can explain only so much.
Do you remember the late Robin Williams’s joke about the duckbill platypus? He said it was God giving Darwin the finger. We humans are more like duckbill platypuses than we are the homogenous and genetically perfect robots that Richard Dawkins wants us to be.

No one can say with certainty exactly how many unborn children with Down syndrome are aborted every year in allegedly civilized countries, including our own, but the estimates are shockingly high. Shocking, that is, if you are like me and don’t think it immoral to bring a baby with Down syndrome into the world. Shocking, that is, if you think we live in a society that places a value on human life that other societies — societies we consider barbarous — don’t.

In 2008, shortly after the Summer Olympics were held in Beijing, Sky News reporter Holly Williams interviewed the director of a Chinese maternity hospital who admitted that her facility counseled expectant mothers to abort babies with “serious deformities,” such as a missing arm or leg. “We don’t let them have the baby,” said the hospital director. “If they have it, it’s a burden to the family, to society, and to the country. We want healthy babies because they make families happy and our society happy too. We’re working to improve the quality of the population.”

You should seek out and watch the video if only to hear the hospital director’s girlish giggling as the interview concludes. You may have heard that evil can be banal. See for yourself just how easily a moral society can be corrupted by ideas similar to those of Peter Singer and Richard Dawkins. See for yourself just what kind of an ethical universe you get when the evolutionary biologists are in charge.

Mr. Dawkins, you’re welcome to come to our house and meet Magdalena. I think you’d really like her, if you could see past her imperfections — if you could see what we see, if you could hear her laughing. But you probably won’t come. You’re probably too busy. We’re probably too simple-minded for you, with our sky God and our ritualistic religious hocus-pocus and our weird belief that even children with Down syndrome should be allowed to live.

So, go ahead and call me immoral, Richard Dawkins. Call my wife immoral. Call the dozens of families around the world we have met and befriended over the last eight years immoral. Many of us had a “choice,” as you call it, and chose life over death. We chose the joy of love over the pain of abortion. We chose the happiness that radiates from Magdalena’s soul over the darkness that must cloud your every, empty day.

We chose Magdalena, and we’d do it again. We’d do it again because your scientific morality is cold and dark. It illuminates nothing.

“Smile, it’s your first day of school!” The (usually) dreaded sentence for kids, and the prized moment for parents — the once-a-year, back-to-school photo.

Whether you’re home-schooled, public-schooled, private-schooled, charter-schooled, or college-bound, the back-to-school photo is more than just a photo. It’s the quick moment of nervous excitement that will soon be forgotten amid overdue homework and Friday night football games. It’s a symbol of the important relationship between children, parents and education.

Thanks to our community for submitting these special moments below.

"Why Is It So Hard for Employers to Fill These Jobs?" - Stephen Moore/ @StephenMoore / August 23, 2014 / http://dailysignal.com/2014/08/23/why-is-it-so-hard-for-employers-to-fill-these-jobs/?utm_source=heritagefoundation&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=morningbell&mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRonvqvIZKXonjHpfsX56eguXa%2B3lMI%2F0ER3fOvrPUfGjI4ARcZnI%2BSLDwEYGJlv6SgFQrLBMa1ozrgOWxU%3D

America has a deficit of workers. Willing workers. Capable workers. Skilled, or at least semi-skilled workers, who can do a job and do it well. There are at least one million jobs that go begging day after day if only employers could find workers to fill them. This probably seems hard-to-believe. After all, how can America have a worker shortage when we have about 18 million Americans who are unemployed or underemployed? When the real unemployment rate is 12 percent?

Well certainly the economy isn’t creating nearly as many jobs as it should – in large part because of regulatory and tax restraints on hiring workers. Obamacare’s anti-employment impact, including the rule that caps employment at 50 workers or less at many firms to avoid the law’s higher costs, is just one example of a law that adds to unemployment lines.

But there are also millions of unemployed Americans who don’t have the skill sets to match what employers are in need of. To make matters worse, a lot of these frustrated job searchers have college degrees that are about as marketable as the paper diploma they are written on.

So what kind of jobs are going unfilled?
* Manufacturing – We always hear we are losing good manufacturing jobs in America and those bedrock middle class jobs aren’t coming back. Gregory Baise, the president of the Illinois Manufacturing Association, tells me that there are “some 500,000 jobs we can’t fill. It’s the biggest problem our industry faces.”. The industry needs welders, pipefitters, electricians, engineers. It needs people skilled in robotics and basic engineering.

* Trucking – At any time over the last several years there have been about 30,000 too few truckers to run long haul routes. The American Trucking Association tells me the number could be closer to 50,000. This is admittedly a tough and high-stress job with lots of time away from friends and family. But they are jobs that pay $50,000 and up, and a lot more than that with overtime.

* Energy – Bloomberg reports that “Gulf Coast oil, gas and chemical companies will have to find 36,000 new qualified workers” by 2016. Many energy towns have unemployment rates of less tha 3 percent – in other words, there’s a worker shortage.

These aren’t menial or “dead end” jobs. They typically pay between $50,000 and $90,000 a year and with benefits the compensation can climb to $100,000. That’s rich in most nations.

Bob Funk, CEO of Express Employment Professionals, one of the nation’s largest temporary employment agencies located in Oklahoma City, places more Americans into jobs than just about anyone. With nearly half-a million hires a year he tells me, he can find a job for “any American with a strong work ethic and can pass a drug test.” He also estimates that the worker shortage – those with skills to fill available jobs – “is at least one million and probably higher than that.”

Why is it so hard to fill these jobs? -  One reason is the curse of the so-called “skills mismatch.” American workers with high school or even college degrees just aren’t technically qualified to do the jobs that are open. This is a stunning indictment of our school system at all levels considering that all in parents and taxpayers often invest as much as $200,000 or more in a child’s education. We’re not turning our kids into competent workers. Some governors like Mike Pence of Indiana have moved to make vocational education more standard in the Hoosier State. It’s a great idea and it’s a start.

But this won’t solve the whole problem because many companies are already willing to offer 3 to 6 months on the job training for trucking and manufacturing jobs. They will teach them men and women how to operate the machinery, the computers, and the scientific equipment. These aren’t sweatshop jobs. Mr. Funk cites figures that more than half of the applicants for these kinds of jobs in the temporary job market can’t pass a drug test. “They are unemployable in that case,” he says regretfully.

Then there is the issue that these jobs don’t get filled because the work lacks glitz and glamour.
Too many Americans have come to view blue collar jobs or skilled artisan jobs as beneath them.

Contributing to this attitude is the wide availability of unemployment insurance, food stamps, mortgage bailout funds and other welfare. Taking these taxpayer handouts is somehow seen as normal and a first, not a last resort. One owner of a major trucking company told me last year, “drivers who get laid off don’t come back until their unemployment benefits run out.” This is documented by research from my colleagues at the Heritage Foundation who have found that “4 million Americans laid off in the recession faced effective marginal tax rates near or above 100 percent [because of welfare benefits], significantly reducing their attachment to the labor market.”

There’s no doubt America needs millions of more jobs. But we could put one million more people in jobs tomorrow if we get schools to train our kids with core competencies and if we could instill in Americans an old-fashioned work ethic. The only dead-end job is no job at all.

"Devil's Bargain: America's Dance with Rogue Regimes" - By Erick Stakelbeck, CBN News Correspondent, September 02, 2014;
 http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2014/August/Devils-Bargain-Americas-Dance-with-Rogue-Regimes/

WASHINGTON -- ISIS is on the march in the Middle East, Iran is developing a nuclear bomb and Russian President Vladimir Putin is sizing up Ukraine. In this increasingly chaotic world, can America outmaneuver its enemies by talking to them?

In the Obama administration's foreign policy strategy, dialogue and diplomacy take the lead. Yet the president has caught heavy criticism in recent months for negotiating with the likes of the Taliban and Iran.
As far back as 2007, during a CNN/YouTube debate, then-candidate Barack Obama made no secret of the fact that -- unlike President George W. Bush -- he would seek dialogue with America's enemies."Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration in Washington or anywhere else -- with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela and North Korea?" Obama was asked.
"I would," he responded. "And the reason is this: the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them, which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of [the Bush] administration, is ridiculous."

Dancing with the Devil?
Once in office, Obama put this strategy to test by promising a "reset" of America's strained relationship with Russia. Putin, on the other hand, had different ideas. In recent months, Russia seized the Crimea region of southern Ukraine and may have designs on the rest of that country and beyond. In addition, pro-Russian separatists stand accused of shooting down a Malaysian airliner over eastern Ukraine in July, killing nearly 300 people. The Obama administration has levied sanctions and warnings against Russia, but Putin does not seem to be changing course.

"We may want to be safe; we may want to repeat the mantra that the Cold War is over," Michael Rubin, a resident scholar with the American Enterprise Institute, said. "But what matters is what [Putin] thinks. And we have to play the game on his terms if we're going to win."

Rubin is author of the book, Dancing with the Devil: The Perils of Engaging Rogue Regimes. He says the Obama administration wrongly believes it can negotiate in good faith with the likes of Iran. The administration recently announced an extension on nuclear talks with the Islamic Republic after a deadline passed with the two sides no closer to a deal."In the year before negotiations began," Rubin explained, "the Iranian economy shrank 5.4 percent. In order to get the Iranians to the table, we've given them $20 billion in sanctions relief and new investment."Despite ongoing talks with the Obama administration, the Iranian regime continues to sponsor global terrorism and threaten Israel -- and cries of "Death to America" remain staples at its rallies.

Obama vs. Reagan
Supporters of the president point out that Ronald Reagan met with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev during the Cold War. Rubin says Reagan did so from a position of strength, with America's economy and military might growing and the Soviets realizing they couldn't compete."For Reagan, this came at the end of the process, not the beginning, and after a multi-year military buildup," Rubin told CBN News.

For years, the United States stood strong on the policy of never negotiating with terrorists. It came as no surprise, then, that Obama came under fire recently for negotiating with the Taliban, exchanging five high-ranking Taliban terrorists for U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, an alleged deserter."Why is it a big mistake trying to engage the likes of the Taliban, Hezbollah, and Hamas, which are terrorist organizations?" CBN News asked Rubin. "First off all, you legitimize the organizations when you negotiate with them," he said. "Second of all, there's so many organizations that don't come to the table -- if they learn that the way to get to the table is to blow up buses -- then that's what they're going to do. You don't want to create an incentive for bad behavior."

Hamas gained legitimacy earlier this year when the Obama administration recognized it as part of a new Palestinian government. Hamas kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers and unleashed a barrage of rockets that ignited a war with Israel shortly thereafter.

Washington's Moral Blindness
"Because of the moral relativism that most of the Washington policy community has really engaged in, they can't distinguish between good and evil," Middle East expert Sarah Stern explained. "They can't distinguish between a genocidal, hate-infested organization like Hamas and a Western, liberal democracy with democratic values like Israel," she said.Stern is president of the Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET) in Washington.

"I'm on Capitol Hill almost every day," she told CBN News. "And based on what I'm hearing from many members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, they do not want to give money to the Palestinians if the Palestinians are entering into an accord with Hamas."

Rubin warns that foreign policy missteps today can have grave consequences down the line."When a president loses political credibility, that gets restored when the next president gets elected," he said. "But international credibility, that doesn't get restored. We're going to be picking up the pieces for decades to come."

"Culture Challenge of the Week: Do You Know What "They" are Teaching Your Kids?" - Rebecca Hagelin | Aug 28, 2014; http://townhall.com/columnists/rebeccahagelin/2014/08/28/culture-challenge-of-the-week-do-you-know-what-they-are-teaching-your-kids-n1884029/page/full

With “free” education offered in every town in the United States, a plethora of teachers who seem to be more than willing to take a role of authority in place of parents, and the convenience of sending our children to someone else to educate them, many parents have relinquished their role as the primary director of their children’s education. Our kids spend more awake time in schoolrooms during their formative years than just about any other place. But it seems that most parents don’t have a clue what their children are being taught.

Even the most expensive private school can be a moral wasteland. Although a high price tag might indicate academic excellence, it can also reflect that the school may contain a level of intellectual snobbery or an air of superiority that assumes that faith in God and traditional moral values are foolishness. Conversely, many nurturing religious schools lack an emphasis on academic achievement. The bottom line is that you have to do your own homework before you can be certain that the private schools in your area are all you hope for. Don’t get me wrong—with the growing failures of the public schools, there has been a rise in the number of private schools across the nation that can help our children to excel both spiritually and academically. It's just incredibly important to assume nothing, and instead to check out everything that is available to you. Even though school season is upon us, remember this: it is never too late to make a change. It might be too late to get into the private school of your choice, but there are always other options.

Of course, everyone knows—though few want to face it—that the performance level of the public school system is dismal. Study after study reveals that American public education is failing when compared to the rest of the civilized world. Add to that the rampant behavioral problems and sexually explicit “family life education” materials, and you’ve got a host of reasons not to send your children to public school.

This is not meant to bash you if your children are in a public school setting. My own children attended our local public high schools. The point is to be diligent about finding out what goes on in the classroom and whether or not your values are under attack. If you have the slightest indication that your child is susceptible to manipulation or may be influenced by the lack of morality on display in the government schools, then I strongly urge you to look for other educational options.

If you determine that your children will attend public or private schools, then vow - at this moment - to exercise your parental rights and responsibility to be involved in their education. Making the commitment to become an active participant in your child's education is the first, and most important decision you will make when preparing the family to head "back to school." Your participation includes taking the time to read textbooks, interact with teachers, understand your rights as a parent, question materials, and never, ever assume that someone knows how to teach your child better than you do.

How to Save Your Family: Direct Your Children’s Education

Evaluate each of your children’s needs and your academic choices: my husband and I learned from raising three children that they will never be cookie-cutter images of each other. They have different academic strengths and weaknesses, different tolerance levels, and very different personalities. Each child has a different way of learning, and it’s up to you—not some educator who can’t possibly know or love them like you do—to make the decisions about how and where he or she should be educated. Every parent should have the choice and freedom to select the educational setting that is best for each of their children. I call this approach simply, "parent directed education". God gave your children to YOU - and it is you that must direct their education, no matter what their school setting.

My husband and I exposed our children to every possible setting over the years—home school, private school and public school. We determined long ago that our family would always march to the beat of our own drummer, so we refused to be victims of snobbery by those parents who insisted that private schools are always the best; we didn’t allow ourselves to be shamed by well-meaning parents who insisted that if we didn’t home school then we were less committed to our kids than they were to theirs; and we absolutely rejected both the conventional wisdom that public education is the answer, and the notion that all public schools are failing schools. We also never forced all of our children into one educational mold out of a desire for convenience. It makes life a little more complicated to actually have to evaluate what situations are best for your individual kids, but it is absolutely worth it.

Seriously consider every option—including home schooling. Research the schools in your area. What are the test scores? What are the behavior problems? How are students disciplined? How much parental involvement is allowed? What textbooks are used? How do they teach sex-ed?

The bottom line is that if a school is keeping you in the dark about materials, classroom procedures, or personal involvement, then they may have a hidden agenda. It might be academic content that emerges as the problem—or it might be an attitude of superiority that seeks to keep you effectively locked out of your child’s education. In either case, I have one piece of advice: Grab your kids and run for their lives! If an adult in “authority” ever tries to force their brand of morality on your children, if any system that has your sons or daughters in their care says that you as the parent don’t belong, then just get up and go.

If you decide it is time to take full control of your kids’ education by home schooling, you must realize upfront that the mass media - and many others - will criticize you for it. The name, “home schooling” is actually a misnomer, misrepresenting the many ways parents provide outstanding instruction for their children. Much of home schooling is done through co-ops, or by hiring tutors skilled in specific areas, in group settings or online through acclaimed institutions. Given all the support and technology available to parents today, you just might be surprised to find that "home schooling" is right for you and your children. We were blessed to "home school" our children for a total of seven years - and now that they are grown and on their own, I am so very grateful for every extra minute I had with them. Childhood is fleeting - and I treasure the time I spent learning about the beautiful, unique individuals that God allowed me to mother and to teach. I get teary and quite emotional when I think about all the precious moments I would have missed had I sent them off to school every year.

Vigilance is the key to success. No matter which settings you choose for your children, your eternal vigilance must be present if you are to succeed in developing your child’s emotional, intellectual, and spiritual abilities to their fullest.

Before you know it, your child will be going from their first step, to walking down that graduation aisle and out your door. Make sure you've given them the right education and enough of your influence to send them on their way fully equipped to face all of life's challenges with wisdom, optimism, courage and a strong moral compass.

We need to continue to pray for Pastor Saeed - that his health will improve and that he will be re-united with his wife and two young children who live in the United States. We also remain hopeful that in addition to getting the medical care he so desperately needs, that Iranian officials display the kind of humanitarian treatment that often accompanies the start of the Iranian New Year which began on March 21st. This is the time of year when the Iranian government frequently offers clemency to prisoners of conscience. [If you have not yet, please sign the petition for his clemency- http://beheardproject.com/saeed#sign]

"In Celebration of Labor-  The Value of a Good Day's Work";By: Chuck Colson| Breakpoint.org: September 1, 2014; http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/entry/13/25963?spMailingID=9339449&spUserID=MTMyMjM2ODE5OQS2&spJobID=380051118&spReportId=MzgwMDUxMTE4S0

The bumper sticker read "I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go." Well, that's what many, including many Christians, think of work. What does Labor Day mean? For most of us, it's nothing more than a welcome break from what we tend to see as "the daily grind." Work to so many people is simply a necessary evil. The goal in life is putting in enough time to retire and relax.

But that attitude and that goal is contrary to a Christian worldview perspective on work.
Christians have a special reason to celebrate Labor Day, which honors the fundamental dignity of workers, because we worship a God Who labored to make the world—and Who created human beings in His image to be His workers. When God made Adam and Eve, He gave them work to do: cultivating and caring for the earth.

In the ancient world, the Greeks and Romans looked upon manual work as a curse, something for lower classes and slaves. But Christianity changed all of that. Christians viewed work as a high calling—a calling to be co-workers with God in unfolding the rich potential of His creation.

This high view of work can be traced throughout the history of the Church. In the Middle Ages, the guild movement grew out of the Church. It set standards for good workmanship and encouraged members to take satisfaction in the results of their labor. The guilds became the forerunner of the modern labor movement.Later, during the Reformation, Martin Luther preached that all work should be done to the glory of God. Whether ministering the Gospel or scrubbing floors, any honest work is pleasing to the Lord. Out of this conviction grew the Protestant work ethic.

Christians were also active on behalf of workers in the early days of the industrial revolution, when factories were "dark satanic mills," to borrow a phrase from Sir William Blake. In those days, work in factories and coal mines was hard and dangerous. Men, women, and children were practically slaves—sometimes even chained to machines. Then John Wesley came preaching and teaching the Gospel throughout England. He came not to the upper classes, but to the laboring classes—to men whose faces were black with coal dust, women whose dresses were patched and faded.

John Wesley preached to them—and in the process, he pricked the conscience of the whole nation.
Two of Wesley's disciples, William Wilberforce and Lord Shaftesbury, were inspired to work for legislation that would clean up abuses in the workplace. At their urging, the British parliament passed child-labor laws, safety laws, and minimum-wage laws.

But here in America we've lost the Christian connection with the labor movement. In many countries, however, from Canada to Poland, that tradition still remains strong.Much of our culture has a distinctly Greek view of work: We work out of necessity. But you see, we are made in the image of God and as such we are made to work—to create, to shape, to bring order out of disorder.

So this Labor Day, remember that all labor derives its true dignity as a reflection of the Creator. And that whatever we do, in word or deed, we should do all to the glory of God.
