On Wednesday, President Obama addressed the nation concerning an uptick of action against the Islamic State, otherwise known as ISIS or ISIL. It was a short address that also was short on surprises.

Obama began with an apt description of ISIS and the threat it poses. In this phase of his remarks, he got it right. ISIS is a horrendous group of murderers whose savagery knows no bounds. Action must be taken. He also emphasized there is a real threat to the homeland—not an immediate one perhaps but one that requires action.

Obama attempted to paint all the military actions taken so far as having been successful.  In this, he probably overstated at least a bit. Recent operations have helped, but the problem won’t be solved without additional actions.

Obama also is correct that this is not only a U.S. problem. The Iraqis have a new government and at least a few allies have signed up to the embryonic coalition. He offered little on who was in the coalition and what they had signed up to do. Will they provide combat troops, funding, or just rhetorical support? That remains to be seen.

The next section began to float toward hyperbole. The president spoke of a “comprehensive counterterror strategy.” He gave Yemen and Somalia as examples of the validity of this methodology.

Specifically, he mentioned:

1. Direct military action: air power, special operators to kill leaders, including going into Syria to pursue them. This appears to be more of this administration’s love of drone strikes and “whack-a-mole” attempts to find the “head.”

2. Indirect military action: Depend on other peoples’ “boots on the ground.” Send nearly 500 additional advisers to help but have absolutely no combat role for U.S. ground forces. This is absurd, unless the definition of “no combat” is stretched to include our special operations forces going with regional forces to stiffen their spines and control air strikes.

This also includes support to “moderate” resistance forces in Syria. This is a nice concept but quite difficult in practice. Even if one concedes we can correctly identify the “good guys” among the mostly radical forces fighting Assad, how do we keep the arms we give them out of the hands of their radical competitor resistance fighters?

3. External Actions: Cut funds, and stop the flow of foreign fighters. This worked with core Al-Qaeda, but ISIS is far less dependent on outside funding. It has stolen huge amounts from banks in Syria and Iraq, and it sells black market oil to the tune of $1 million a day. Trying to get other countries to stop their citizens from joining the fight also is a nice thought but probably impossible.

4. Humanitarian assistance: This is primarily for displaced persons fleeing the oppression of ISIS. This is the most “doable” part of the president’s plan.

Obama must do all of the above with allied help and coalition partners. He mentioned that Secretary of State John Kerry in particular was seeking more Arab assistance. Unfortunately, Kerry’s credibility is weak, and the Arab countries are not big “joiners” when the fight is tough. But the president is right to seek this. It is a key to any measure of success.

Obama’s short address on ISIS was short on surprises.

Lastly, the president wants congressional support. He should invest the effort to build it. If he expects to get a free pass from Capitol Hill, with no questions or desire for an elaboration on the plan, he will be surprised. Congress wants to be supportive, regardless of party. It sees the need but will back only a potential winner. Obama has a bit more convincing to do.

The conclusion was spent reminding the American people of the ever-present risks in military actions and the fact this will take time. This was wise, and Obama fought the temptation to put a date certain onto the conclusion of the operation.

Obama did spend too much of the wrap-up on emphasizing how this is different from “Bush’s wars.” He could not resist the added emphasis here that again, there would be no ground combat role.

Never tell your enemies what you will not do, Mr. President.

The final words were an attempt to convince the listeners that his leadership has been successful. That “case” is weak. Now the nation will wait to see if this works.

"The Root of 9/11: Bad Theology" - Jerry Newcombe | Sep 11, 2014; http://townhall.com/columnists/jerrynewcombe/2014/09/11/draft-n1889980/page/full

Did you know that since 9/11, there have been 23,780 separate deadly terror attacks carried out by Islamic extremists, according to thereligionofpiece.com?

The 13th anniversary of 9/11 is upon us. Why did it happen at all?  We get a hint of why from a statement from the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hasan al-Banna (1906-1949) of Egypt. He said: “It is the nature of Islam to dominate, not to be dominated, to impose its law on all nations, and to extend its power to the entire planet.”

But there’s another factor as well, and that deals with the personal motivation of the hijackers. 9/11 happened because of bad theology. Nineteen men believed the promise that if they died in a state of Jihad, they would go to Paradise and receive their 72 virgins. Nineteen men sought assurance of salvation in the wrong place and killed thousands of innocent people on the way.

Mohammad Atta, who led the hijacking of American Airlines flight 11 and flew it into the World Trade Center’s north tower, had a suitcase that providentially ended up on a different plane.Authorities found his wedding suit all lain out in that suitcase, along with an ornate copy of the Qu’ran. He was preparing for his big wedding day in the afterlife.

Whether one can be saved or not is unknowable in Islam, as is forgiveness of sins. Steven Masood is a former Muslim from Pakistan, who now runs the ministry Jesus to Muslims. He told me of Jihadists in general, “they believe that, well, if we are killed, we will go straight into Paradise. It’s much easier for us to go into Paradise that way than by performing all the ritual performance and everything and still not knowing that we are going to Paradise of god or not. But because the Koran says that martyrs killed in the way of god, or in the fight for god…will go straight into the Paradise of god.”

Lawrence Wright writes in his Pulitzer Prize-winning book "The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11": “Martyrdom promised such young men and ideal alternative to a life that was so sparing in its rewards. A glorious death beckoned to the sinner, who would be forgiven, it is said, with the first spurt of blood, and he would behold his place in Paradise even before his death. Seventy members of his household might be spared the fires of hell because of his sacrifice” (p. 123).

“The martyr who is poor will be crowned in heaven with a jewel more valuable than the earth itself. And for those young men who came from cultures where women are shuttered away and rendered unattainable for someone without prospects, martyrdom offered the conjugal pleasures of seventy-two virgins---‘the dark-eyed houris,’ as the Quran describes them, ‘chaste as hidden pearls.’ They awaited the martyr with feats of meat and fruit and cups of the purest wine.”

I have interviewed Robert Spencer many times. He is an expert on Islam, the director of jihadwatch.org, and the author of many books, including Arab Winter Comes to America. I once asked him about the seeming incongruity between strict Islam and the pornography found in Osama Bin Laden’s compound, or the fact that some of the 9/11 hijackers, it was learned later, had gone to strip clubs before that fateful day. Spence said, “You have to understand that Islam has a very different moral outlook from Christianity, and there is no redemption or forgiveness in Islam; there is only the principle that if your good deeds outweigh your bad deeds, then you’ll enter paradise, and if your bad deeds outweigh your good deeds then you’ll go to hell; that’s it.” Also: “The thing is thought that Jihad is the best deed of all and outweighs all the others, and so if you’re waging Jihad you essentially have a free pass to do whatever you want otherwise because none of the bad deeds you’re going to do are going to outweigh your great deed of Jihad.”

This greatly contrasts to historic Christianity with its “blessed assurance.” Christianity and experience teach that we are all sinful. But even though a righteous God judges sin, we can be assured of salvation when our sins are paid for---and our righteousness provided---by Another.

Warning: to ears that are only used to multi-culturalism, the following statement from the Bible will offend. But let God be true and every man a liar.

In the New Testament, John the Apostle writes, “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know you have eternal life” (emphasis added).

That’s what Atta et al were missing and what they missed out on. In short, those planes were driven into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania by bad theology.

"Q&A: What More Troops in Iraq Means for Defeating ISIS" - James Phillips/ Melissa Quinn / September 10, 2014 / http://dailysignal.com/2014/09/10/qa-troops-iraq-means-defeating-isis/?utm_source=heritagefoundation&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=morningbell&mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRonvK3PZKXonjHpfsX56eguXa%2B3lMI%2F0ER3fOvrPUfGjI4DTsNiI%2BSLDwEYGJlv6SgFQrLBMa1ozrgOWxU%3D

Despite repeated U.S. airstrikes ordered by President Obama to blunt the advance of the Islamic State, the brutal terrorist group — also known as ISIS — continues to slaughter civilians in Iraq and Syria and to vow to inflict the same on the United States.

Last week, the president ordered more than 350 troops to Iraq to toughen security at the U.S. Embassy, bringing the total number of American armed forces to over 1,000. According to the White House, the troops are not there to engage in combat. After telling reporters Aug. 28  that he didn’t yet have a strategy for combating the Islamic State at its bases in Syria, Obama plans to address the nation tonight to detail a blueprint  to “degrade and ultimately destroy” the terrorist army.

Ahead of the president’s speech, James Phillips, a veteran expert in Middle Eastern affairs at The Heritage Foundation, agreed to answer questions about what the president’s decision to deploy more troops means — and what American strategy against ISIS should look like.

The Daily Signal: President Obama already withdrew our troops from Iraq. Why send more back?
Phillips: The Obama administration unwisely withdrew all U.S. troops from Iraq at the end of 2011, while minimizing the risks entailed in that move. The comeback of the al-Qaeda offshoot called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, exposed the wishful thinking behind that flawed decision. President Obama has belatedly ordered some U.S. troops back to Iraq to help protect the U.S. Embassy and diplomatic personnel, gather intelligence on the situation, identify targets for airstrikes and help alleviate a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Q: Will U.S. military personnel be involved in combat? If not, why?
A: U.S. troops potentially could be involved in combat if they are attacked by ISIS or other hostile groups, but the administration has ruled out deploying combat troops on the ground inside Iraq.  U.S. personnel deployed so far technically have been assigned as advisers and intelligence-gathering personnel. The troops most likely to see combat are Army special operations forces assigned to units of the Iraqi army and Kurdish militia forces who act as spotters to help direct U.S. airstrikes. U.S. warplanes and armed drones already have been involved in launching airstrikes, which will be the principal military operations conducted by U.S. forces in Iraq. The air campaign is likely to escalate in intensity very shortly, along with possible cruise missile strikes launched by U.S. naval forces in the Persian Gulf and eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Q: The White House says the troops will protect our diplomatic facilities and personnel. Isn’t there already diplomatic security? Why add more?
A: The administration prudently is beefing up security for diplomatic personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and elsewhere, after being caught off-guard by the rapid advance of the ISIS offensive.  ISIS also has a long-established covert presence in Baghdad and other cities where they have conducted an intensifying terrorist campaign using car bombs, suicide bombers and commando attacks.  The White House belatedly has realized that President Obama’s glib dismissal of ISIS as a “J.V. [junior varsity] team” of terrorists back in January was a huge mistake.

Q: How should U.S. troops stationed at embassies and bases respond to mounting attacks in areas near them? Are they allowed to engage in combat?
A: The troops are allowed to take action to defend themselves and other U.S. personnel from attack, but in general will try to avoid ground combat. The U.S. should mount most of its military efforts from the air, not the ground.

Q: Do you think this is the first step toward putting combat boots on the ground again in Iraq to combat the Islamic State?
A: I think the Obama administration wants to avoid putting U.S. combat troops on the ground. But it is likely that at least some of the special operations forces already deployed in Iraq will be drawn into the fighting if the Iraqi units they are advising are attacked.

Q: Given recent developments in Iraq and the beheadings of two American journalists, what should President Obama’s strategy be in combating ISIS?
A: The president needs to recognize that his strategy of “leading from behind” has yielded disastrous results that have left U.S. interests behind, not only in Iraq, but in Libya and Syria as well.  He must develop a coherent political, military and diplomatic strategy in close cooperation with the Iraqi government, the Kurdistan regional government and other allies to destroy ISIS.

This should entail major U.S. airstrikes on ISIS leadership, military bases and fighters that are closely coordinated with Iraqi military forces on the ground; intensive intelligence and law enforcement cooperation to reduce the flow of foreign fighters joining ISIS in Iraq and Syria; political efforts by the Iraqi government to reach out to moderate Sunni political and tribal leaders to siphon away Sunni Arab support for ISIS; international efforts to cut the flow of smuggled oil and gasoline, as well as private donations that help fund ISIS.

Q: President Obama said the administration’s goal is to “shrink” the Islamic State to a “manageable problem.” Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden said the U.S. would chase ISIS to “the gates of Hell.” Is the administration presenting a clear mission?
A: The administration unfortunately has sent mixed messages that have confused and discouraged U.S. allies as well as potential allies inside Iraq.  President Obama has an opportunity to clearly articulate U.S. policy in his speech tonight.

Let’s hope that he finally has developed a strategy for a crisis that has been brewing at least since January.

"Truett Cathy’s Life Story Shows the Value Entrepreneurship Can Bring to a Society" - Scott Blakeman / September 08, 2014 / http://dailysignal.com/2014/09/08/truett-cathys-life-story-shows-value-entrepreneurship-can-bring-society/?utm_source=heritagefoundation&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=morningbell&mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRonvKzMZKXonjHpfsX56eguXa%2B3lMI%2F0ER3fOvrPUfGjI4DTcpiI%2BSLDwEYGJlv6SgFQrLBMa1ozrgOWxU%3D [AS I SEE IT: Mr. Cathy was a great man that unfortunately will be seen by most as just a successful businessman. But he was even more a great example of being successful in the business sense and maintaining your principles, in his case the Biblical principles he lived by. As you read the accompanying news stories, you'll read more about his incredible generosity - in particular to his employees and to the larger community. You'll also read just a little about how great a husband (of 65 years!) and father he was to his family. As someone said on a radio program I just listened to, it wouldn't be a bad idea to stop by a Chik-Fil-A this week and say as you leave - I purchased this to honor the memory of Mr. Truett. Though they know he's now enjoying fellowship with his Lord Jesus, let's remember to pray for his family as they naturally grieve no longer having his very presence in their lives. - Stan]

Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, a popular quick-service chicken restaurant, died this morning. He was 93.

Cathy was a hard worker who had a knack for innovative ideas on how to improve his craft in a competitive industry. According to its website, Chick-fil-A, with more than 1,800 locations in 39 states and Washington, D.C., and $5 billion in annual sales in 2013, is the largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in America.

Cathy’s vision, determination, and hard work paid off. He is also a great example of the essence of an entrepreneur and how the free market can create value for society. As an entrepreneur, Cathy knew the pathway to success began by looking outside of himself to the interests of others. He sought to create products and services in the food industry that people wanted and provided those things in an environment where customers and employees felt valued.

Cathy understood that for entrepreneurs to profit, they must create value for others. Cathy created that value, and rewards followed. Despite closing all his stores on Sunday so his employees could attend church and be with their families, his personal success left him a billionaire. He also was a philanthropist who created the WinShape Foundation in the early 1980s with the stated goal to “shape winners” by helping young people succeed in life through scholarships and other youth-support programs.” He also spent millions to support college sports, including a bowl sponsorship, and encouraged other entrepreneurs to do so as well.

Cathy’s ingenuity and conviction to serve others along with the power of the free market created wealth for many. The free market provides the best structure and freedom for generating value, opportunity, and wealth for the largest amount of people – with an added benefit of creating opportunity for greater charitable giving.

Truett Cathy will be missed, and his legacy of devoting his life to serving others by means of his entrepreneurial prowess in the marketplace should be appreciated, admired and emulated.

“I’d bet they’re asleep in New York. I’d bet they’re asleep all over America,” bemoans Rick the saloonkeeper in the classic 1942 film “Casablanca.” As Humphrey Bogart mumbled those words on a Hollywood backlot, the world could not have been in worse shape. The swastika waved over Rick’s beloved Paris. Nazis boots were on the march everywhere. Nevertheless, “Casablanca” did a huge box office. The story of Rick’s transformation from pacifist to patriot mirrored the shift in the national mood. In 1942, after Pearl Harbor, Americans were ready for a fight.

And fight they did.  Monday, August 25 marks the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Paris, one of the greatest symbols of the world winning back its freedom from Nazi domination.

Today, as on every occasion associated with the war, we pause to marvel at the accomplishments of the “Greatest Generation.”  They are silver-haired and stoop shouldered, now.  It is hard to imagine that passengers unloading from an Honor Flight (a tribute that flies veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the national World War II memorial), were once leaping into the early morning darkness that shrouded Normandy.

Freedom’s future was won by youth. In the U.S., those between 18 and 41 were considered eligible for military service, but the average age of a combat soldier was around 26.

And it wasn’t just American youth that went to war. The first troops into Paris were units of the Free French. Their way was paved by the French Resistance, whose ranks were also filled with young men and women who fought to take freedom back.

At the time they had no idea that their generation was great or even good. Before WW II, many wondered if Americans still had the right stuff—if a GI could ever match-up to a doughboy. The novelist James Michener, who served in the Pacific during World War II recalled, “Many observers considered us a lost generation and feared we might collapse if summed to some crucial battlefield.”

And there was measure of guilt that Americans had done too little to match the fascist menace from Germany and Japan. Army chaplain Russell Cartwright Stroup, another veteran of the Pacific war, wrote that he chose overseas service because he felt that, “as part of a generation that failed to prevent this war, I should suffer with those who are victims of our failure.”

But measure up they did. Sixteen million Americans put on a uniform. They fought on every continent except Antarctica. Almost half the U.S. economy was diverted to the war effort.

Many might say never again. By some estimates, about 75 percent of American youth are not even qualified for military service.

They also say Americans are sick of war. That America has no stomach for boots on the ground. They say America can’t afford to defend itself.

Hopefully, America’s youth will never have to liberate Paris again. But, it would be unwise to assume that this generation could not.

America has never been the same country. It has been weak and agrarian. It has been powerful and industrialized. The only common characteristic is that—whatever the era—they were all Americans. And, yet, every generation of Americans has proved to be the greatest generation. Every generation has answered the call to arms when it came.

Americans can and should always debate what are the best steps to take to keep Americans free, safe and prosperous. Nor should we ever take lightly the decision to answer the call of the trumpets.

From Continental Army soldiers enduring the privations of Valley Forge to GIs marching down the Champs Elysees, Americans have evidenced an enduring commitment to fight for freedom.

There is no reason to sell this generation of America’s youth short. That is not just a hope. It’s a fact. After over a decade of war, the fact that our armed forces continue to recruit and retain a high quality all-volunteer forces speaks volumes.

As we remember Paris, it is not just an opportunity to praise the past. It is a time to remember we should never sell our nation—especially our young people—short.

"The Spiral of Silence Goes Online - The Truth Must Out" - By: John Stonestreet| Breakpoint.org: September 4, 2014;
http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/entry/13/26012?spMailingID=9368923&spUserID=MTMyMjM2ODE5OQS2&spJobID=380250732&spReportId=MzgwMjUwNzMyS0

You’d think that social media would bring more voices to the table of public debate. But it ain’t so....

Chuck Colson spoke frequently about the need for Christians to break the “spiral of silence” when it comes to hot-button social issues such as redefining marriage or the sanctity of human life. The term “spiral of silence” refers to the desire we all have to avoid reprisal or isolation in public settings, and so people generally go along with what they think is the popular opinion—even if they object to that opinion themselves. So instead of speaking up, they remain silent.

Thus, for example, though many people oppose the idea of same-sex “marriage”, they’re afraid to say so, and that perpetuates the illusion that it’s an historical inevitability, when in fact many people just don’t want the grief. In one study, researchers called this phenomenon “false enforcement,” or “the public enforcement of a norm that is not privately endorsed.” What sustains the norm isn’t its popularity, much less its validity, but instead, the desire to “avoid a negative social judgment from one’s peers.”

Think about the media, for example: When was the last time you saw homosexuality depicted negatively at all? And consider the verbal beating former coach Tony Dungy took this summer after he merely stated he would not have drafted Michael Sam to play on his team? Well, anyone with a similar view certainly got the message.

Now advocates of social media often suggest that online communication tools combat the spiral of silence. Because social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter provide more options for those with minority views, they should feel freer to say what they really think and thus break the spiral of silence. But it hasn’t worked out that way.In fact, social media may have made the spiral of silence even worse.

According to Pew Research, 86 percent of Americans are willing to have an in-person conversation about a controversial public issue, but just 42 percent of Facebook and Twitter users are willing to post about it on those platforms. And of the 14% of Americans who were unwilling to discuss the story face to face with others, only 0.3% were willing to post about it on social media.

Now perhaps you’re thinking, “Well, social media isn’t usually the best place to have these discussions.” And I would agree. Often it’s not. But the study also suggested that “social media users were less willing to share their opinions in face-to-face settings.” In other words, their hesitancy to express their opinions on social media made them less likely to do it in other social settings too.

How could this be? Something C.S. Lewis noticed decades ago may offer a clue. He wrote of a tendency in public discourse to attack the motives of a person without even bothering to examine the merits of his or her position. Back in 1941, Lewis wrote, “The modern method is to assume without discussion that he is wrong and then distract his attention from this (the only real issue) by busily explaining how he became so silly.” It’s a technique Lewis called “Bulverism.” I can tell you from firsthand experience, there’s no shortage of people out there who want to make those of us who hold Christian views on such things as marriage feel like we’re silly.

For example, one reviewer of Same-Sex Marriage: A Thoughtful Approach to God's Design for Marriage, my new book with Sean McDowell, said we were just trotting out the old, tired examples of the New Mexico photographer and Denver baker who were punished for refusing to be a part of a so-called gay wedding—as if they were an anomaly rather than the new norm. Rather than deal with the facts of actual events that happened as recently as a few months ago, the reviewer instead chose to attack our motives and intelligence. It’s just dressed up Bulverism!

Well, how to break this spiral of silence? It’s easy to say; it’s harder to do. We must speak the truth in love—face to face, online, or in whatever venue God provides. Not out of a desire to prove others wrong, but as a witness to the true, the good, and the beautiful. As Christian apologist G. K. Chesterton wrote, “We are not entitled to despair of explaining the truth; nor is it really so horribly difficult to explain.”

FURTHER READING AND INFORMATION -Be a part of breaking the spiral of silence. Take advantage of social media to speak the truth winsomely but with boldness. The opportunities to share your opinions, thoughts, and beliefs should be used, not silenced.
