#2691 (6/3) "Filmmakers Cast Doubt in Georgia"

"FILMMAKERS CAST DOUBT IN GEORGIA" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, May 31, 2019; https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA19E65&f=WU19E20
It wouldn't be Hollywood if there weren't drama. And in this game of chicken between Georgia and the titans of Tinsel Town, there's more of it every day.

It was all very theatrical when Netflix, Disney, WarnerMedia, and Sony Pictures started shaking their fists at pro-life states and made hollow threats about canceling productions. For most conservatives, it was a familiar scene. The entertainment industry has been using the same script since North Carolina's HB 2, when celebrities climbed on their moral high horses to brow beat voters who believe in privacy. Now their empty bluster is directed at the South, where governors are signing abortion bans into law faster than liberals can yell, "Cut!"

This week, Disney CEO Bob Iger trotted out the same old non-committal soundbites. They would be reevaluating their projects, he promised. "We are watching it very carefully," he reassured his allies. But as well as Iger and others are delivering their lines, their performance isn't getting rave reviews from an important corner -- their actual film crews.
"None of us voted for this," said one key grip in Georgia, "and we shouldn't have to suffer because of what the politicians decided." A fight is brewing, others agreed, if their companies pull up stakes and move out.
BuzzFeed interviewed scores of frustrated people on location in the South -- some of whom are starting campaigns of their own. Callie Moore, a camera assistant who works for Starz, is launching a "Stay and Fight in Georgia" initiative. "I generally don't agree that boycotting is the right call to make a real difference here," Moore argued. "I think the film industry brings so much to the state of Georgia, economically and diversity-wise, and I think it does so much good for the state. The least we can do is fight back and try to keep it here."
"It's ultimately hurting more people than it is going to do any justice," one person fumed. "It's not going to affect the politicians and the actors. They're still going to keep going to work in other places like they always have. But... it's going to destroy us." Even liberals like former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams are using the hashtag #Consequences to remind the industry that its bravado would mean "lost jobs for carpenters, hair dressers, food workers and 100s of small businesses grown right here."

Georgia legislators, on the other hand, are probably tired of rolling out the red carpet to people who use them for their tax climate, only to turn around and shame them for the values that make it possible. "Disney is free to do what they please, but their stated intent is highly hypocritical," Stephen Kent points out in the Washington Examiner. "When Hollywood's moral values collide with dollars it's usually no contest." After all, he argues, there didn't seem to be even a whiff of this outrage when Iger shook on his sweet deals overseas.
"There's a deep display of insincerity going on anytime Hollywood studios begin boycotts of conservative states for abortion restrictions. Disney just completed production of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, and before that was The Last Jedi, which featured memorable scenes shot in Croatia and Bolivia. In Croatia, abortion is restricted after 10 weeks. In Bolivia, it is entirely illegal. And yet, no Disney boycott."

Not to mention, the Wall Street Journal points out, Iger's obvious double standard in Asia. "More than a few Americans may also notice the contradiction that Disney is more worried about filming in a U.S. state that has passed a law democratically than it is operating its theme park and hawking its films in China, which uses facial-recognition software to monitor its population and has a million Uighurs in re-education camps..."

There will be more legislators like the one in California, trying to push more studios over the hump by dangling tax breaks in front of anyone with the hutzpah to leave pro-life states. "Move to a place like ours that has a better appreciation for killing babies," the bill seems to say! It's a nice try, but whatever modest incentives California can offer will still be offset by the state's suffocating regulations and higher costs.

In the meantime, if Iger is so disgusted by unborn children, maybe Georgians shouldn't wait for him to leave. Maybe they should force him out altogether. Obviously, Disney's brand of "making dreams come true" is a bygone era. "Making the Left's agenda a reality" is more like it. Threatening the people of Georgia because they simply want to allow children to be born speaks volumes of Iger's new Disney.

In the end, though, these executives still see the world through dollars. That's why these CEOs' posturing never amounts to anything. It's all an act. And by Hollywood standards, not a very good one.

#2690 (6/2) SUNDAY SPECIAL: "[Praying for President Trump] "My Conversaton With Franklink Graham"

"[PRAYING FOR PRESIDENT TRUMP] "MY CONVERSATION WITH FRANKLIN  GRAHAM" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, May 29, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190529/franklin-graham [AS I SEE IT: You will probably not read this in time to persuade your PASTOR to pray for the President TODAY, June 2. But it doesn't really matter if he takes the time THIS SUN or if it's  on a future Sunday. Additonally, as Rev. Graham makes clear, ALL Christians should be praying for our President , just as I have been encouraging people to do on my blog page every day for the past several years - and will continue to do. - Stan]
-------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
Franklin Graham may not agree with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on much, but apparently, they have one thing in common: they both pray for Donald Trump. At a press gaggle last week, the House leader surprised everyone by saying, "I pray for the President of the United States." Of course, what she prays is another story, but that she prays means her party has no excuses. This Sunday's invitation is for everyone -- no matter which side they're on -- to join hands and pray for America.

On June 2, Franklin and [at least] 250 Christian leaders are calling on people to set aside time in earnest prayer for President Trump. When I talked to him on Tuesday's "Washington Watch" about what prompted the idea, he says he felt an urgency in his heart. The attacks on the president are intensifying, he explained, to a level we've never seen before. "The politics that we have today, it's so vicious. It wasn't like this when I was growing up. Republicans and Democrats disagreed, but they'd go out and have dinner at night together. But that's not the case anymore, Tony. It's almost like we're in some kind of war, and it's about winning. It's not about what's best for the country."

There's a hatred for Donald Trump, Franklin went on, "that I've never seen before. It's one thing to have a president that we disagree with and you may not vote for -- but to have the all-out hatred... [It] distracts the president, and it weakens our country... We need to get on with the business of solving the problems in our country -- and this isn't solving them." It's dangerous, Franklin insisted. "And if we don't pray, I'm afraid for the president, and I'm afraid for the presidency."

Just because some Americans didn't vote for Trump doesn't mean they don't have a stake in his presidency. "He was elected, and we should get behind him. And if he does well, then we all benefit, don't we? Republicans and Democrats, independents -- we all benefit from this. If he makes a bad decision, then we're all gonna pay for it. So we need to be praying that God will use him to make good decisions." A lot of us disagreed with the policies of the previous president, but we still prayed for him. Like a lot of believers, I spent eight years asking God to change Barack Obama's heart and give him wisdom. Why? Because I trust that He can work through everyone. Even if some of these leaders don't seek God themselves, they're still influenced by people praying for them.

At its core, America's problem isn't political -- it's spiritual. "God is the only on who can fix the issues in our country," Franklin agreed. But the responsibility, he reminded listeners, falls on us. "If we Christians don't pray, then we're at fault if something were to destroy our country." And if America is sidelined or distracted from its ability to influence the world, everyone suffers. One look at today's headlines will tell you that this is no time for our leaders to take their eye off the ball.
Look at Pastor Brunson in Turkey, Franklin said by explanation. "He'd still be in that prison if it hadn't been for Donald Trump." This president "wants to support and defend Christians... And he has a desire to help the church [which] I appreciate about him. Is he a perfect person? Absolutely not. Is he the best example of the Christian faith? No way. But there's something in his heart [that God has placed there] to defend the Christian faith and religious liberty. And so, we need to try to lift him up in prayer and support them where we can."

If you and your church want to join in, visit the Billy Graham website [https://billygraham.org/story/praying-for-our-president/] or Franklin's Facebook page. [https://soundcloud.com/family-research-council/franklin-graham]"We know God hears the prayers of one righteous person," the son of the famous evangelist reminded us. "But if there's millions of people praying, maybe God will listen and hear those prayers -- and answer [them].

#2689 (5/31) PRO-LIFE SAT: "A Total Eclipse of the Heartbeat"

"A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEARTBEAT" - Tony Perkins, Washington Watch, May 30, 2019;https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190530/total-eclipse [AS I SEE IT: I was blessed to be watching  this past Tues. night to see Kodi Lee perform on NBC's America's Got Talent. As I saw the audience stand as one to give him an ovation afterwards, I immediately wondered how many of those who were applauding were also those who are otherwise supporting the view that someone who was born blind and autistic - or with some other disability like Down's Syndrome - did not have a right to life. How I pray those individuals could understand how - even without a great talent or the ability to make a great contribution to society - every individual has a right to live because we are each made in the image of God and are eternally precious to Him.!- Stan]
At first, they don't seem all that alike. He's the 22-year-old contestant who wowed the world on Wednesday's "America's Got Talent." She's the tiniest baby ever to survive. One was blind and autistic, barely able to introduce the song that shocked people to tears. The other was the size of a juice box, fitting snuggly in the doctor's hands. By the Left's standards, neither life was worth saving. But this morning, their miracle stories are front-page news, reminding all of us: don't count anyone out.

Most people tuning in to NBC last night probably had no idea what the Supreme Court had done the day before. Their eyes were on Kodi Lee, stunned that a sightless, disabled singer was capable of so much. But then, isn't that the problem with our society? Not everyone sees the potential lives like Kodi's -- including, in a surreal backdrop to yesterday's show -- the U.S. Supreme Court. No one will ever know which justices declined to review a lower court ruling that struck down disability-based abortions. What we do know, after Wednesday, is that we live in a nation that can target babies for death because they don't see the beauty in a person as unique as Kodi.

At 8.6 ounces, a lot of people didn't see a future for a life like Saybie's either. "We weren't expecting anyone this small," the neonatologist said with wonder. "I was stunned, frankly." Born at 23 weeks, Saybie wouldn't have even been considered a baby by most liberals. (Or her mom a "mother.") "When a woman gets pregnant," Christine Quinn argued on CNN, "that is not a human being inside of her." Good luck persuading the country of that now that they've seen the pictures of this perfectly-formed, perfectly human infant, who entered the world just shy of her third trimester. Of course, Saybie's value doesn't come from her size -- just like Kodi's doesn't come from his talent. Their worth doesn't even come from being wanted or loved, which they are. It comes from being a person of dignity, made in the image of God.

What a huge relief that leaders across America understand that, even if the Democrats on Capitol Hill do not. In Louisiana, the headache for national liberals got even bigger when the local party didn't just sign on to the state's pro-life push -- but led it. For the first time in the 2019 sweep of abortion bans in the South and Midwest, a Democrat, State Senator John Milkovich, sponsored the bill to outlaw abortion after a baby's heartbeat is detected. Eighteen more voted for its passage. The media wants you to believe that these are outliers. But in a four-month span that's seen more than 130 Democrats siding with life or against radical abortion expansions, the reality is anything but.
Extremists in party headquarters are also scrambling to spin Governor John Bel Edwards's (D) support, since he's poised -- not just to sign one of the earliest abortion bans into law, but a ban that recognizes the value of all life, regardless of how it was conceived. Like Alabama, Louisiana lawmakers rejected the idea that an innocent child of rape or incest should be punished for the crimes of her father.
"I know there are many who feel just as strongly as I do on abortion and disagree with me -- and I respect their opinions," Governor Edwards said in a statement. "As I prepare to sign this bill, I call on the overwhelming bipartisan majority of legislators who voted for it to join me in continuing to build a better Louisiana that cares for the least among us and provides more opportunity for everyone."

Back in October, long before the tragedy of the New York law, Edwards hinted at the trouble in store for a Democratic party determined to banish pro-lifers. "I know that for many in the national party, on the national scene, [it's] not a good fit. But I will tell you, here in Louisiana, I speak and meet with Democrats who are pro-life every single day." And based on polling, it's not just Louisiana. Most Americans -- including Democrats -- are completely on board with reining in abortion. By a huge margin -- 71 to 18 percent -- this country thinks killing innocent unborn children after 20 weeks should be illegal. Fifty-nine percent of those are Democrats!

The abortion industry can say what it wants. And in places like Alabama, it can spend what it wants. But even $100-to-$1 odds won't buy the Left what it needs: acceptance for a radical agenda the country is rejecting more every day. Because with every Saybie and every Kodi, they've seen the truth: that every life counts.]

#2688 (5/31) "Supreme Showdown: Ginsburg v. Thomas"

"SUPREME SHOWDOWN: GINSBURG V. THOMAS" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, May 29, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190529/supreme-showdown
--------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
There are at least 20 abortion cases in the Supreme Court pipeline, but as Americans learned yesterday -- Indiana's won't be the one challenging Roe v. Wade. In another mixed bag for pro-lifers, the justices only ruled on the half of the law dealing with fetal remains. They couldn't bring themselves to decide the more explosive issue: race-, sex-, and disability-based abortions. It's another instance, Justice Clarence Thomas said, of "kicking the can down the road." And pretty soon, he warns, the court is going to run out of road to kick it to.

They are the two longest-serving justices -- and easily the most diverse. Justice Thomas and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg have been on opposite sides of hundreds of issues over the years -- so Tuesday's battle of opinions wasn't anything new for the duo. What it was to many Americans, however, was enlightening. As the Washington Post points out, Justice Thomas is the only one left on the court who participated in 1992's landmark abortion case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey. He's also one of the four justices "who said they would have effectively overturned Roe if they could."

Twenty-seven years later, the justice known for his silence during arguments had plenty to say in his concurring opinion in this case-- most specifically, to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. By a 7-2 vote, the court agreed with Indiana's mandate that any bodies or remains from an abortion be disposed with dignity -- either by burial or cremation. But that was just part of the question before the court. Under the bill signed by then-Governor Mike Pence, Indiana also banned women from ending their pregnancies because of sex, race, or a "potential diagnoses" like Down syndrome. And amazingly, that was part of the law the court refused to defend.

To Justice Thomas's horror, the court essentially gave its consent to Hoosiers targeting their babies for certain traits or characteristics. "In other contexts," he wrote, "the Court has been zealous in vindicating the rights of people even potentially subjected to race, sex, and disability discrimination." But by refusing to uphold this law, he went on, the court may as well be "constitutionaliz[ing] the views of the 20th-century eugenics movement," which -- Thomas explains -- were the vision of Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger.

Thomas spent paragraphs detailing the horrible skeletons in Planned Parenthood's closet. "Sanger herself campaigned for birth control in black communities," Thomas detailed. "In 1930, she opened a birth-control clinic in Harlem...Then, in 1939, Sanger initiated the 'Negro Project,' an effort to promote birth control in poor, Southern black communities... In a report titled 'Birth Control and the Negro,' Sanger and her coauthors identified blacks as 'the great problem of the South' -- the group with 'the greatest economic, health, and social problems.'" In other words, he warned, "The use of abortion to achieve eugenic goals is not merely hypothetical," he argued.

Ginsburg, meanwhile, duked it out with Thomas in the footnotes, writing that Indiana was imposing an "undue burden." "A woman who exercises her constitutionally protected right to terminate a pregnancy is not a 'mother,'" she insists. Then what on earth are they? Landlords? Hosts? What a woman does to her child has no impact on what she is to her child. Just as men don't magically become fathers after their babies are born. Parents are created -- just as children are -- at the moment of conception. No wonder Thomas fired back in his own footnote that Justice Ginsburg "makes little sense."

"It is not a 'waste' of our resources to summarily reverse an incorrect decision that created a Circuit split." It's time, he said to "confront the constitutionality of these laws... [W]e cannot avoid them forever." The court invented a right to abortion, he argued. Now it's "dutybound to address its scope."

#2687 (5/30) "The Gods of Our Age -Our Short Course on Sex, State, Science, and Stuff"

"THE GODS OF OUR AGE -OUR SHORT COURSE ON SEX, STATE, SCIENCE, AND STUFF" - by John Stonestreet  and David Carlson, Breakpoint.org, May 30, 2019; https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gods-of-our-age-short-course-tickets-61202081072
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” God’s commandment to Israel could not have been clearer, but for Israel, keeping it was not so easy. Each time God’s people turned to “other gods” like Baal or Molech—despite the dire and repeated warnings by the prophets—the result was disaster.

Of course, worshiping false gods is not a Middle Eastern specialty. The history of the Church is filled with battles against pagan gods, such as Zeus, Athena, Odin, or any number of Celtic and Slavic deities. Even today, we’ll sometimes hear of a pagan revival, but it’s typically some fringe story of an Icelander worshiping Thor.
Still, it would be a grave mistake to think idol worship is a thing only of the past or of primitive cultures. Throughout Western culture, scientifically advanced as it is, we are guilty of the sin of idolatry—including many Christians. The gods we worship don’t have personal names, but they do have their “high places.” They may not have statues or altars like Asherah poles, but they do have prophets and priestesses.

Here are four big idols of our age (and because I used to be Baptist, they all begin with the letter S):  Sex, State, Science, and Stuff.
Each of these things are good, in and of themselves. Without sex, there would be no us. Without state, chaos. Without science, ignorance. Without stuff, poverty. But when even good things come to occupy a place in our heart where only God belongs, when we put our trust in them and see ourselves in their image, they become our gods, and we become idolaters.

This is the topic of our next online short course: “The Gods of Our Age.” I’ll kick off the course talking about the god of Stuff, followed by Dr. Hunter Baker on the god of State. In so many ways, we look to government to supply our deepest needs, from safety to meaning and fulfillment. Then the one and only Dr. J. P . Moreland, who has just written an excellent book on scientism, the idea that science is the source of all knowledge, will join the course to talk about that idol. Finally, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse will talk about how sex has become an ends of personal fulfillment, rather than a means of something higher, and in that sense has become a god of our age, too.

There are many reasons why we must understand our idols. One reason is that they are so subtle. No one would ever stand up and announce, “I trust in stuff to fill the God-shaped hole in my heart,” of course. And yet the pull of materialism is so strong. How many Americans find themselves in debt, or addicted to the promise of the next adventure, or just being less generous than they should be out of worry or concern?

Another reason we should understand our idols is because our idols diminish our understanding of God. T. S. Elliot said that the essence of idolatry is entertaining thoughts about Him that are not worthy of Him. Our idols make us think less about God, and at the same time, make us think about God less. Either of those paths leads to disaster.

And finally, how we think about God affects how we think about people. Psalm 135 says that those who worship and trust in idols become “like them.” The false gods of our age—including sex, stuff, state, and science—are the primary drivers behind the dehumanization we see across our culture. There’s so much more we can say about that.

Our short course, “The Gods of Our Age: Sex, State, Science, and Stuff” is completely online and begins Tuesday June 4. The course is held on four consecutive Tuesday nights, and includes a presentation by our guest instructor and a QandA session after that. Each session is recorded and made available to you, in case you have to miss a session or wish to review it. Go to BreakPoint.org to register while space is available.

The warning of the prophets is as true as ever: The path of idols is the path of destruction. But the promise offered throughout Scripture remains just as true: to know God is to know ourselves and to know life. What other reason would we need to rid ourselves of idols and restore the worship of God in our lives, in our families, and in our culture?

There are many fine pastors in America. They are devoted shepherds. They are faithful teachers of the Word. They care for their flocks. And when necessary, they sound the alarm.
For each of them, I am thankful. Some of them are dear friends and co-workers, and many of them have sacrificed much for God’s work and God’s people.

But there are all too many others who do not see the handwriting on the wall. They seem willfully ignorant of the “signs of the times.” For them and, even more, for their congregations, I am deeply concerned.
According to a recent Barna survey, “a plurality of the general population believes freedom of religion in the U.S. is worse than it was 10 years ago.” In contrast, during that same time period, “the proportion of Protestant pastors who fear religious liberties may be further restricted in the future has actually dropped.” Dropped? Seriously?

At a time when our religious liberties are under attack from every corner – from our children’s schools to our places of business and from the internet to the courts – how can it be that many Protestant pastors are less concerned now than before?
According to Barna, “In the 2014 survey of all Christian and non-Christian clergy, over half of Protestant pastors (55 percent) admitted they were very concerned that religious freedom will become more restricted in the next five years; this percentage fell to below half (49 percent) in the 2015 / 2016 study and to one-third (34 percent) in 2017.”

Indeed, “If signs of concern waned during these years, it’s not because emphasis on religious freedom was any less prominent in national news.
   In 2015, in particular, there were several high-profile religious liberty stories, including the controversial passage (and amendment) of the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which proponents claimed was intended to restrict government’s ability to infringe on religious rights;
   the landmark ruling in Obergefell vs. Hodges in the Supreme Court, granting marriage rights to same-sex couples;
and threats to repeal the accreditation of Gordon College for their statement of faith on marriage as limited to a man and a woman. Considering these events in light of a perceived drop in Protestant pastors’ concerns about religious freedom, there is perhaps less of a ‘headline sensitivity’ than one might expect.”

Could it be that these pastors feel more confidence because of the positive steps the Trump administration has taken to reinforce our religious liberties? That is certainly possible, and the president has done a lot for the cause of religious liberty, from his war against the Johnson Amendment to his many fine federal court appointees. And he has used his bully pulpit to speak up for our freedoms.
At the same time, it would be foolish for us to think that the national tide had somehow turned and that our religious liberties were not under serious and real attack. And what happens if a radical, leftist Democrat becomes our next president? What will things look like then?

In my 2011 book, A Queer Thing Happened to America, I devoted one whole chapter to the assault on our freedoms, noting, “The really frightening thing is that it would be easy to write an entire book focusing on the subject matter of this chapter alone, and the book could be much longer than this present book – and this is one long book!” (For the record, the book was 700 pages long with 1,500 endnotes. The chapter in question was more than 17,000 words long.)
That was back in 2011, and even then, I could list numerous, full-length books documenting this very real assault on our most fundamental freedoms – namely, our freedoms of speech, conscience, and religion.
For example, in 2003, David Limbaugh wrote, Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity.
That same year Alan Sears and Craig Osten wrote, The Homosexual Agenda: Exposing the Principal Threat to Religious Freedom Today.
In 2009, Donald Wildom wrote, Speechless: Silencing the Christians.
Also in 2009, Janet Foler wrote, The Criminalization of Christianity: Read This Book Before It Becomes Illegal!
In 2010, Tammy Bruce wrote, The New Thought Police: Inside the Left's Assault on Free Speech and Free Minds.

This is just a representative sampling, and some of these books are more than 15 years old.
In fact, reading their content only underscores the urgency of the hour we live in today. In many ways, the warnings were quite prescient – and remember: these were written before social media giants like Google and Facebook had fully shown their hands.
Today, you need a very large, detailed scorecard to keep track of the latest assaults on our religious liberties, to the point that some major organizations (such as the ADL or Liberty Counsel or the FRC) sound out daily updates. That’s why this Barna survey should be of special concern. Our leaders need to wake up and speak up – while they still have the chance.
And to every congregant who would say, “My pastor is not sounding the alarm or giving us constructive steps to take,” I offer you this counsel.
First, pray for them, don’t gossip about them. They have a lot on their plate and face many unique challenges.
Second, send them a note and say, “Pastor, we love you and are praying for you and we want you to raise your voice. On behalf of our families – especially our children and our grandchildren – please speak up and speak out.”
Then, remind them of the oft-quoted words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world it leaves to its children.”

#2685 (5/28) "Never Forget"

------------------------------------------

"NEVER FORGET" - Tony Perkins, Washington  Update, May 24, 2019; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20190524/never-forget

----------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of things have changed in America over the last several years, and how we treat Memorial Day is one of them. I remember as a kid all of the parades and veterans -- and how we stood and honored the flag. Fast-forward a generation and suddenly, people don’t just miss the significance of the holiday – they miss its entire meaning!

According to a shocking new Harris Poll, only 55 percent of this country can explain the purpose behind Memorial Day is to honor the fallen from our nation’s wars. If you want to know why that’s significant, look at millennials, FRC’s Lt. General Jerry Boykin says. Half of them aren’t proud to be Americans, a recent survey shows. “Now, if you stop and think about it, what Memorial Day is all about is honoring those that gave the last full measure, honoring those who died fighting for this country. If young adults really knew what a sacrifice that has been made by those men and women that have stepped up and said, ‘Here am I -- send me’ by giving their lives in service to this country, they would certainly have more pride.”

We can talk about what’s not happening in our schools. We can talk about what’s not happening in our culture. But maybe we should be talking about what should be happening in our homes as parents and grandparents. What are some ways, I asked General Boykin, that some ways that that we can honor America with our kids?
“First of all, how you treat the American flag says a lot to those that are observing you. I have a big flagpole in my yard and you’ve seen it. But I want my children and my grandchildren, especially, to see me handle the flag – with reverence. I want them to understand that flag is more than a piece of cloth that not only represents an incredible history with a lot of sacrifice, but also hope for the future. Hope for the world.”
The other thing we have to do is encourage our children to read history by making it fun for them and getting them into programs that encourage it. For more than 230 years, men and women have given their lives to a cause greater than themselves. When we lost sight of what that cause is, there’s no reason to make such a costly sacrifice.

A lot of schools have stopped teaching history – and that’s very deliberate. One of the most poignant statements in George Orwell’s 1984 is that he who controls the present controls the past-- and who controls the past controls the future. And there’s no greater illustration of that than what’s happening in our schools today, as secularists try to destroy this idea of American exceptionalism, because they know that exceptionalism is rooting in a biblical Christian foundation.

The message of our roots is important -- and as an Americans, we need to be able to identify with the history and sacrifice that went into building this country. This weekend, the best gift we can give to a family who’s lost a hero in uniform is that you’ll cherish what they died for. Let’s pray more people [took] that to heart this [past] weekend as we honor and give thanks for the brave men and women who made this country possible.
