#2990 (4/6) "How Capitalism Is Helping US Defeat COVID-19"

"HOW CAPITALISM IS HELPING US DEFEAT COVID-19" - Jarrett Stepman / @JarrettStepman / April 05, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/04/05/how-capitalism-is-helping-us-defeat-covid-19/

In times of crisis, Americans don’t look just to the government to save the day. In certain intellectual circles in the United States it’s become fashionable to decry free markets, laying every economic woe of any American at the feet of “late stage capitalism,” the buzzword used to decry any business practice that seems designed to promote big business over the little guy.

But right now, as our nation struggles to deal with the coronavirus, we’re seeing proof our American companies are stepping up and helping. Businesses, big and small, are trying to do their part to help the U.S. defeat COVID-19. Just consider these examples:
—MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell announced last week that 75% of his company’s production will be converted to making face masks.
—AK Wet Works in Seabrook, Texas, a small business that makes industrial painting and coating products, is now using its specialty to sanitize public places and other businesses. “We actually came to the idea of, why can’t we take our blast pots and actually create a vapor that can be mixed with a disinfectant, so we can actually sterilize things around us,” operations manager Dennis Hotz told KTRK-TV, Houston’s ABC affiliate.
—The Young and Yonder distillery in Healdsburg, California, is now making hand sanitizer and giving it to customers who come in for to-go pickups. “The community has been incredible. Most people who came in also picked up a bottle or two of spirits,” said Sarah Opatz, who founded Young & Yonder with her husband in 2013, according to The Press Democrat newspaper of Santa, Rosa, California. “It’s kept our business alive and growing. … We just wanted everybody to stay clean. We had the supply and ingredients.”
—General Motors, Ford, and Tesla are ramping up production of much-needed ventilators.

Helen Raleigh at The Federalist compiled an excellent rundown of some of the other businesses that have stepped up during this crisis, including fashion companies that will switch over to making masks by the millions and drugstore chains, among them CVS and Walgreens, that are opening up mobile COVID-19 testing sites.
A coalition of CEOs launched the “Stop the Spread” initiative to organize businesses to address the specific needs of society during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brooks Brothers, which normally makes suits and clothing, will produce masks and gowns. Flex Ltd., a supply chain and manufacturing company, is ramping up production of ventilators and protective equipment. Many other companies are joining in.
Parkdale Mills Inc. has joined efforts with a team of textile manufacturers to ramp up production of face masks and other similar materials. “This is … a time of crisis that many people have not seen since the time of the world wars, Vietnam, you know, situations like that,” a Parkdale Mills spokesman said in an interview with The Daily Signal on Wednesday. “And [in] these times, there is a call to action. Who is going to step up and supply a need and do the right thing? We are trying to do the best we can to do what we can for the country.”

Perhaps just as importantly in this time of stress and deep uncertainty, innumerable businesses are doing what they can to give additional aid to employees, many of whom are facing the prospect of losing their jobs and salaries.
The owner of Federico’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Belmar, New Jersey, is dealing with a lockdown in the state by opening up a $50,000 line of credit to continue paying employees. “It just seemed like the right thing to do,” Bryan Morin, the owner of the pizzeria, said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on the Fox News Channel. “I didn’t want them to worry about me paying my mortgage. I didn’t want these guys … [to] have to worry about paying their rent, their utilities, and insurance, and other stuff.” The restaurant can still do deliveries, but the potential for employees to get sick and end up in quarantine remains high. “I just took this [line of credit] out to guarantee that my employees, no matter what, they’ll continue to be able to pay their bills. You’ve got to take care of your employees,” Morin said. “Without your employees, you don’t have a business.”
Smuttynose Brewing in Hampton, New Hampshire, has been forced to close and only do deliveries, but it’s decided to retain and pay all of its full- and part-time staff through the pandemic. “We feel this was an extremely important decision,” Andrew Hart, Smuttynose director of hospitality, said, according to Seacoastonline. “There is a lot of uncertainty here, and we are in a unique and fortunate position where we are able to financially take care of our employees the best we can.”

There are numerous other stories like this around the country as businesses and employees are doing their best to weather the storm. The total shutdown of the American economy has few—if any—precedents. If anything, the closest comparison is to World War II, where practically the entire economy was devoted to the war effort in one way or another. During that war, the power of American government was certainly expanded, as it is now during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. But America’s strength in war, or at any other time, is not in the power of its government.
The genius of the U.S. war effort was that, rather than relying on the government to fulfill the needs of the nation, the government merely acted to marshal resources to the front lines. Otherwise, the country relied on the surge of private production and the natural inclination of Americans in a crisis to devote all of their energy to tackle the challenge.

As they did in the 1940s, countless businesses, large and small, are now stepping up to aid both in combating the invisible enemy and in helping Americans who are hurting physically and financially at this time. This is in part the genius of a free market system and why it’s ultimately more successful than, say, socialism. Businesses and free people can quickly respond to the needs of society. When the need is great, their response is greater and far more efficient than a government-controlled system could ever be. In moments of national crisis, that great and good American system shines through.
During World War II, the auto industry switched production from cars to tanks, planes, and other weapons of war. The results were remarkable. Edsel Ford, who ran the Ford Motor Co. at the time, vowed that the automaker could produce a bomber an hour at the Willow Run production facility in Michigan, which it did in 1944. It was an incredible achievement.
Today, Ford is making a similar switch in production—not to bombers, but to ventilators to care for COVID-19 patients. Ford is partnering with General Electric to produce 50,000 ventilators in 100 days, according to The New York Times. “Just as Ford in the last century moved its manufacturing might seamlessly from auto to tank production during World War II, the Ford team is working with GE Healthcare to use its awesome engineering and manufacturing capabilities to voluntarily help this nation solve one of its most pressing problems,” the White House’s Defense Production Act coordinator, Peter Navarro, said in a statement.

There will be plenty in this time of crisis who claim that socialism or other radical solutions are the answer to what ails us in this moment. Some, like Jacobin Magazine, are calling for the nationalization and government takeover of Amazon and other companies. But Amazon and Walmart, truckers and grocers, and the countless hard-working people who comprise our remarkable supply chain have been keeping the nation fed as the government struggles to meet its basic requirements in this pandemic.

Though many may take this time to attack our generally free market economy, the reality is that even as businesses and industries are decimated, our eventual turnaround will rely on the ingenuity of Americans across the country to reboot when the coronavirus pandemic passes. It’s time to ignore the haters. Defeating COVID-19 requires joint efforts from both government and businesses—as well as communities and individuals. Private enterprise, as was the case in crises of the past, will play an essential role in getting America back on its feet.

God’s promises fulfilledin Burkina Faso -After militants killed Naomi Zoré’s husband, Eli, as part of attacks on Christians in Arbinda, Burkina Faso, Naomi was forced to move to the city of Kaya with her nine children. A church there housed the large family, along with many other Christians displaced by the attacks. Naomi shares how the believers gathered to ask God to remember them and send them help. The number of displaced Christians became more than the local church could handle. Thankfully, Open Doors was able to provide enough food to feed 560 of the most vulnerable families for two months. When she saw God’s provision, Naomi rejoiced: “Today, God’s promises have been fulfilled. He promised to never leave or forsake you … I received my package of [food] and was told it was just for my family!”

#2989 (4/5) SUNDAY SPECIAL Happy Palm Sunday! - "Don't Forget To Remember"

"DON'T FORGET TO REMEMBER" - A SPECIAL CONONAVIRUS MESSAGE FROM  STEVE BROWN OF KEY LIFE - ",  March 30, 2020; https://www.keylife.org/articles/dont-forget-to-remember [AS I SEE IT I was just remarking to a friend that it's fine to be on top of how to stay healthy and safe in this pandemic. But after awhile, if you just read all the information mixed in with over-reaction and baseless speculations, it can all make you go crazy! Praise God that for the believer real peace comes not from having done "all the right things" or having b een entertained by the latest coronavirus music concert but by reflecting on God's truth in Scripture. We can completely rest in the truth - made repeatedly in Scripture - that God IS in control and whether we continue to live or go home to be with Him as believers, "it [can be] well with our soul." And so, I challenge you to spend most of your time reading and reflecting on God's Word and meditating on the truth that "Nothing Surprises God." And do take time to remember and reflect on the incredible blessings He has given us - starting with the Calvary (which should be enough), on the many things we already have in Christ (Eph.1). - Stan]
Whenever any new crisis like the coronavirus happens it’s so easy to go into panic mode. It’s hard not to go there with 24/7 news telling us that we’re all going to die. In times of crisis believers should, of course, be careful, smart, and wise. But believers should also remember a God who is “the same yesterday and today and forever,” and a God who has demonstrated over and over again that he has no perspiration on his upper lip.

God said to Joshua, after a major crisis, to have his men take twelve stones out of the Jordan and to lay them down on dry ground. “When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord” (Joshua 4:5-7). Christians have “piles of stones” too. They are memorials, and the gift God gave to believers and a gift we give to the world as a part of our witness.

In most families someone is the “keeper of the memories.” It’s the person with lots of photos…generally reflecting our memories of happiness and times of celebration. That’s certainly true of our family, and if Facebook is any indication, it’s certainly true of everybody else’s family too. It’s hard to find a photo of a hospital ward, a casket, or a divorce or bankruptcy decree. Do you know why? At least for Christians, the dark side was only a way to create memories of how God brought the light out of it.

Paul said that God hasn’t given Christians a spirit of fear, “but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7). Most of us wonder if that’s really true. The only way to know is to discover it in a crisis like our present one. The “gift” of the crisis is that we will “know.” Corrie ten Boom, in talking to Christian leaders afraid of what would be a major persecution of Christians, referred to her experience in the Ravensbruck concentration/death camp. She said that she had discovered that God gave the grace when it was needed and not before.

I don’t want to be a “Pollyanna” here. The personal and national crises are real and scary, but don’t forget the memories. War (been there, done that). The polio quarantine of the mid-fifties (been there, done that). The energy crisis of the seventies (been there, done that). The passing of loved ones (been there, done that). The destruction of hurricanes (been there, done that). The coronavirus crisis…now we’ll be able to say we’ve been there too.

But more than that, we’ll be able to add more stones as a memory of God’s faithfulness. We will remember a God who knows that crucifixions are followed by resurrections. It’s built into the universe by the God who created it. It is, after all, the point of the Lord’s Supper. The world says, “Have a drink and forget.” Jesus says, “Drink and remember.”

“INTERCESSORS ARE THE RUDDER” – A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT - Wanda Alger, June 28th, 2017; https://www.getamericapraying.com/blog/I was recently given a word by my good friend, Bill Yount. His word greatly encouraged me as an intercessor. Working for Intercessors for America, I soon realized it was not just a word for me, but for all who have been praying for our nation, wondering if their prayers are truly making any difference. Bill told me, “I kept seeing you as a small rudder on a huge ship. Hidden, but giving guidance. Although it seemed slow it was turning the whole ship. Patience was needed to see the impact of your…ministry. I sense the Lord saying, ‘Don’t jump ship! I’ve made you the rudder!’ ” I was immediately touched in my spirit by this encouragement, knowing that our seemingly small place in prayer was having a great impact.
James 3:4 talks about the power of a small rudder to steer a large ship. In this scripture about the power of our tongue, consider the power of prophetic intercession! In the Forerunner Commentary on this verse we read, “…rudders manipulate the course of immense ocean vessels with a slight movement of a pilot’s hand. Since it is underwater and aft, the rudder of a ship does its work UNSEEN. A passenger is ignorant of its movements most of the time. Yet, when it is in proper working order, the rudder holds more power over the ship than the wind. The wind will blow, toss, even destroy the ship’s rigging, but the rudder guides the ship exactly where it directs.”
This is God’s promise to the intercessors in this hour of national turbulence. Don’t stop praying! Your prayers have great power to turn the ship! Continue praying, interceding, and discerning the workings and movements of the Holy Spirit, being faithful to God’s commands. As we come together to declare God’s faithfulness, this nation will, once again, head in the direction that God intends. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Regardless of the winds of adversity and the fires of the enemy, God’s people have a power that cannot be matched. Let us join in faith and continue to pray and speak of God’s faithfulness in order to bring God’s people and this nation into the fullness of God’s plans. Note this additional encouragement from God’s word:
Colossians 2:15 – “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (ESV).
Psalm 33:8-11 – “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.”

PRAY FOR AMERICA: THANK GOD for His many blessings on America throughout it's history. May we then ask that AMERICA once again be a blessing TO GOD, by once again submitting to HIS will in our affairs - both personal and national - that He may truly "heal our land." (2 Chron. 7:14) Short of that, we should not be saying "God Bless America"but instead "God be merciful towards America!"
PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS:  1) Pray for President Trump and his advisers, that they would select Godly leaders at the federal level who will be accountable to do an excellent job (or be fired!) ; that he would seek God's wisdom and be enabled to lead our country effectively in the years ahead; and 2) Pray our leaders at every level of government will Spirit-filled, leading us with Godly wisdom and integrity; that they will  only pass legislation and enact policies that will benefit Americans today as well as future generations and NOT do any lasting harm.
SUPREME COURT: PRAY that the justices will only hand down decisions that are Constitutionally sound and in the best interests of our country now and for future generations.

World-Wide Prayer Requests:

PRAISE GOD for the continuing recent successes against ISIS! P
ray that coalition forces will be able to  fully destroy the leadership and infrastructure of ISIS.

#2988 (4/4) PRO-LIFE SAT: "Why Must Abortions Continue During a Pandemic?"

"WHY MUST ABORTIONS CONTINUE DURING A PANDEMIC?" - Nicole Russell / @russell_nm / March 30, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/03/30/why-must-abortions-continue-during-a-pandemic
Government officials in Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi included abortion clinics in their lists of nonessential services, effectively shutting down the facilities for the time being. (Photo: Kateryna Kukota/iStock/Getty Images)

With COVID-19 spreading through the United States, state and federal officials took extra precautions and shut down nonessential services to preserve medical equipment necessary to combat the disease. In some states, this shutdown includes abortion clinics, since they use personal protective equipment needed by health workers confronting the new coronavirus.
As of this writing, government officials in Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi have included abortion clinics in their lists of nonessential services, effectively shutting down the facilities for the time being. At least 11 Planned Parenthood clinics in California have shut down due to the coronavirus, but some clinics in Texas and Ohio say they will continue abortions, despite the orders. An abortion clinic in Louisiana was caught trying to facilitate an abortion, defying the ban put in place by state officials.

Abortion advocates are outraged at the closures, and the defiance and reaction raise the question: With so many lives at risk and so much uncertainty right now in the medical field, why must abortions, of all things, continue?
Of course, pro-choice activists claim abortions must continue because of the obvious medical implications of pregnancy: Babies continue to gestate whether or not there’s a global pandemic. Although pro-life advocates would say this growth is one of the many miracles of life and a reason we must continue to promote life at every stage, abortion clinics want to use it as a reason to continue. The Washington Post reported that Amy Hagstrom Miller, president of Whole Woman’s Health Alliance, which operates three clinics in Texas, said: “Emergency actions during a global pandemic should advance health and safety for us all, not force people to delay much-needed care and possibly exacerbate their health situations by doing so.”

It’s unfortunate that pro-choice activists still want clinics to perform abortions with the excuse that doing so is medically necessary, or that its saves the mother’s life when, in fact, these types of abortions are rare. In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported over 90% of abortions are performed during the first trimester, and not for medical reasons at all.
The news media pretended to be aghast that the coronavirus affected abortion procedures, of all things. Politico reported that “Anti-abortion forces led by Republican governors” led to the closure of clinics. The New York Times reported that the coronavirus has become an “excuse to restrict abortions.”

The progressive left is so committed to continuing abortions for the sake of women’s health that it is willing to risk women’s health by doing so even as the globe is threatened by a highly contagious virus that few understand or can predict. If this doesn’t communicate hypocrisy to women in general and abortion advocates in particular, I don’t know what will.

Even the most ardent defender of Roe v. Wade should be willing to understand the gravity of this moment, take a stand for the health of our entire society, and support a temporary pause of abortions so that medical supplies needed to slow this pandemic can go to facilities that are facing down coronavirus in real time. Failure to do this says as much about the innate self-centeredness of the abortion movement as it does their misunderstanding of what health care really means.

For whatever it’s worth right now, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said his office isn’t having any disobedience about abortion. Reeves, a Republican, said he would take action if the state’s one remaining abortion clinic fails to comply with his order to stand down. “We’ll take whatever action we need to protect not only the lives of unborn children, but also the lives of anyone who may contract this particular virus,” he said.

The abortion debate can and will continue another day. For right now, when specific medical equipment is needed to save hundreds of thousands of lives and abortion clinics take that equipment unnecessarily, this is the only correct response.

#2987 (4/3) "Western Media Falls Into China’s Propaganda Trap"

"WESTERN MEDIA FALLS INTO CHINA PROPAGANDA TRAP" - Helle Dale / @Helledale / March 31, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/03/31/western-media-falls-into-chinas-propaganda-trap/
The same news media that continuously piles on America's president fails almost entirely to shine a critical light on the actions of China's communist government. Pictured: President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence arrive Monday for the daily coronavirus task force briefing, held this time in the Rose Garden of the White House. (Photo: Win McNamee/Getty Images)

The idea that some American and European news outlets are giving more credibility to the Chinese party line on the coronavirus than they do to their own governments is nothing less than bizarre. Yet, here we are.
Even in this time of national crisis, sheer hatred for the U.S. president causes many in the mainstream media to interpret his every action and statement as unacceptable. On top of that, Beijing for years has been constructing the grid for information warfare against the United States, which it now is deploying full force. This combination has produced a shameful capitulation by the media establishment to China’s communist authoritarian regime.
This has been reflected in decisions by news outlets such as CNN, NBC, CBS, and ABC to cut away from President Donald Trump’s daily coronavirus briefings at the White House. Ted Koppel, whose classic “Nightline” show was born out of the Iran hostage crisis in 1979, and who now is back on the air, has commented that statements by Trump that are unfiltered by journalists are not newsworthy. Day after day, media pundits blast and malign Trump. Meanwhile, networks carry the daily briefings by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a liberal Democrat, as if only the news from New York counts.

Not only that, but according to the Media Research Center, the same news media that continuously piles on Trump fails almost entirely to shine a critical light on the actions of the Chinese government.  In a damning report looking at evening news broadcasts from Jan. 17 (when the first coronavirus story broke) through March 13 (when the president declared a national state of emergency), the Media Research Center found that out of 634 minutes of coronavirus coverage, just 3 minutes and 14 seconds were in any way critical of the Chinese government’s actions. In 20% of the stories, reporters cited Chinese statistics, but failed to challenge them most of the time (97%).

Over the past decade, Beijing has invested heavily in extending its propaganda reach across the globe, which now is paying off. Major newspapers such as The Washington Post and the Financial Times carry paid “country advertising” supplements, paid for by China and other countries practicing public relations. These supplements are nice moneymakers for the news organizations and almost indistinguishable from regular news pages.
In some cases, the arrangement goes even further. According to an investigation by the Daily Caller, the Daily Mail newspaper in London has had a content-sharing relationship since 2015 with China’s People’s Daily, the official organ of the Chinese Communist Party. The Daily Mail thus can be found to echo the Communist Party line on the COVID-19, which originated in China.
Last week, the Mail ran a story about a second outbreak in China, saying: “Beijing’s leading doctor warns of a NEW [MK1] coronavirus outbreak in China after the country reported its first case of someone ‘catching the illness from a person returning from abroad.’” This story got 1.1 million shares on social media. Countries singled out by it are the United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
The storyline is that the United States, not China, is responsible for the coronavirus emerged in March as a propaganda tactic by Beijing. On March 13, People’s Daily published a story based on statements by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian alleging that a visit by U.S. military athletes to Wuhan in October spread the coronavirus in China. “It might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan,” Zhao said on Twitter. “U.S. is the creator of human right [sic] disasters” reads a March 23 article on the People’s Daily website. This line attempts to deflect blame while undermining China’s primary international competitor, the United States.

China’s information war goes hand in hand with a bid for greater global influence. Although this is unconscionable, it’s not hard to grasp the motivation of the leadership in Beijing. What is much harder to comprehend is the readiness of the mainstream media to give Beijing a pass—all the while showing irrational disdain for the heroic efforts of America’s president and his administration..

God’s promises fulfilledin Burkina Faso
After militants killed Naomi Zoré’s husband, Eli, as part of attacks on Christians in Arbinda, Burkina Faso, Naomi was forced to move to the city of Kaya with her nine children.
April 3 - Pray for the Christians in northern Burkina Faso—that God will give them grace to stand strong in Him through their mounting challenges.

"WHEN CAN LIFE RETUYRN TO NORMAL? 4 SIGNS TO MONITOR" - Peter Brookes / @Brookes_Peter / April 01, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/04/01/when-will-coronavirus-pandemic-end-4-signs-to-monitor

Americans can’t wait for the restrictions on their movements and interactions—widely known as social distancing—to end. That’s completely understandable. The coronavirus crisis has widely disrupted modern life. But as we learned Sunday, the Trump administration’s commonsense “stop the spread” increased mitigation strategy is with us for a while—at least till the end of April. Based on the challenges we’re facing, this is a prudent decision.

While a firm date for the end of this biological battle in the United States is just unknowable at this point, it’s reasonable to ask: How will we know when we’re seeing some light at the end of the social distancing tunnel? Here are some of the things we would want to see:

1. Numbers: Any decision to loosen social distancing restrictions has to be based on data, not emotion. For instance, a locality, state or region must see its confirmed COVID-19 case numbers decrease over a two week period (to account for the disease incubation period) before considering mitigation modifications. Similar dips in hospitalization and death rates, as well as improved recovery rates, would also be a welcome sign. In addition, experts must develop a comprehensive nationwide reporting system so that the data can be comprehensively collected, collated, analyzed, and shared.

2. Testing: A robust diagnostic test architecture must be in place across the country. Optimally, testing should include not only testing for COVID-19—the disease derived from the SARS-CoV-2 virus— but also for the presence of possible immunity through serological antibody testing in people who may have self-resolved the illness. Moreover, we need to have widely available testing with quick turnarounds, so that we have the data sooner to make the most efficient and effective public policy decisions in this dynamic situation.

3. Health Care System: Our health care system is under significant stress and strain—not to mention the immeasurable pressure on our intrepid doctors, nurses and medical staff, who are on the front lines working tirelessly to protect and heal us. We have to get to a place where the health care system is no longer at risk of being overwhelmed, meaning it must have the necessary personal protective equipment to keep the medical staff healthy and enough ventilators for those in respiratory distress.  Taking care of our health care system means rebuilding the Strategic National Stockpile, which can be immediately dispatched to a COVID-19 hot spot if local supplies are on the verge of being exhausted.

4. Medicine: There is not yet a vaccine for this new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and no proven therapeutics or anti-virals.  However, the Food and Drug Administration has authorized the use of some treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, under an emergency use authorization. While an effective vaccine is likely at least a year away, proven therapeutics or anti-virals could arrive sooner, reducing pain and suffering. Effective treatments will likely reduce the hospitalization and death rates, too.

Social distancing is a major disruption to our lives in so many ways. It affects the economy and well-being of the American people, hurts the education of our children, and separates us from loved ones, including  those who may be vulnerable. While social distancing may be painful now, it offers the possibility of reducing the overall level of pain we may have to endure during this crisis. Ultimately, we are social distancing to save lives. Social distancing won’t last forever—and there are signs that we can watch for to see that it might be coming to an end.

#2985 (4/1) "Jobs or Lives? - Upholding Human Dignity and Fighting Coronavirus"

"JOBS OR LIVES? - UPHOLDING HUMAN DIGNITY AND FIGHTING CORONAVIRUS" - John Stonestreet and Shane Morris. 03/31/20; https://www.breakpoint.org/jobs-or-lives/

After almost two weeks of government-advised physical distancing, the President has announced a 30-day extension to this part of the fight against the coronavirus. As various numbers associated with this pandemic continue to grow, especially the shocking prediction that U.S. deaths could top 100,000, we must never forget that behind each and every number is a precious life made in the image of God. Numbers are necessary to communicate scale, of course, but they can also obscure that what we’re talking about here are real people.

Speaking of numbers and names, over three million Americans have filed for unemployment in recent weeks. Combine that with the volatile stock market, and the economic toll of this virus is beyond staggering. Still, behind these dollar figures are also real people, many trying to figure out how to keep their homes and feed their kids. A one-time check from the government won’t be enough for restaurant and small business owners, hotel and shopping center employees, barbers and stylists, bus drivers and substitute teachers, and many others, who face a financial crisis if they social distance potentially as real and damaging as the sickness they could acquire or spread if they do not.

The tension here is real, and I’m not talking about spring breakers who scoffed at the health and well-being of others to have their own fun or those spouting despicable “if they die, they die” sort of rhetoric. I’m talking about my friend Dale who, after contracting a particularly nasty bacteria during a routine surgery several months ago, would be at tremendous risk if he contracted this virus. He needs others to help slow the spread of this disease by staying home.
But I’m also talking about other friends, legal refugees from a war-torn area of Africa, who go to my church and rely on wages now lost because a local hotel closed until Memorial Day and fired its employees. Certainly, unemployment will help for a while, but it’s impossible to know if their long-term security is now in jeopardy.
As more hospitals reach capacity and COVID-19 cases rise, our city, state, and federal leaders are making some of the hardest choices imaginable outside of wartime. While physical distancing is the most important thing we can do right now to slow this virus and save additional lives, the consequences of doing this will be devastating for many.

Now, I’m in no place to offer different policy solutions, of course, but I am convinced that a Christian worldview can help us think through these tensions.
First, the chief value that must ground any and all policy proposals, especially at a critical time as this, is a fundamental commitment to the dignity of each and every person. In fact, every policy question is, at root, one of how best to honor priceless image-bearers, whether what’s being threatened are their lives or their livelihoods.
It’s a false dilemma to assume that if someone is worried about jobs and the economy, they don’t care about people’s lives; or if we’re worried about the threat the virus poses to people’s lives, they’re obviously callous toward anyone in financial straits. In our culture, one that’s worked so hard to untether human dignity from its one and only true source, we will struggle to rightly honor human dignity whether we’re talking about emergency care or employment. As Christians, we must never allow a price tag to be placed on people.

Still, among the painful lessons we are learning right now is that, like hospitals struggling to keep up with an influx of critical patients, we too are finite. So is our government. So is our economy. We can only do so much to stop this virus and prop up a faltering economy. Our duty as individuals and as a society—just like those doctors and nurses—is to make wise decisions with limited resources and then do our best to alleviate any suffering of those hit hardest. We don’t look to utilitarian calculus for this, as if people were numbers on a spreadsheet or obstacles to our own security and happiness.

While must always encourage our leaders to do what’s right, we ought never demand they do what’s impossible. We must pray for them instead, fervently and frequently, asking God to give them wisdom. And, we must respond, as Christians have always done in times of crisis, by running toward the suffering we see, as best we can.
