#3002 (4/18) PRO-LIFE SAT: "Trump Sends Funds Meant for Pro-Abortion WHO to Samaritan’s Purse, Red Cross to Fight Coronavirus"

"TRUMP SENDS FUNDS MEANT FOR PRO-ABORTION WHO TO SAMARITAN'S PURSE, RED CROSS TO FIGHGT CORONAVIRUS" - Steven Ertelt, APR 17, 2020| https://www.lifenews.com/2020/04/17/trump-sends-funds-meant-for-pro-abortion-who-to-samaritans-purse-red-cross-to-fight-coronavirus/
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump halted federal taxpayer funding for the WHO, the international agency that has botched its response to the coronavirus. WHO has been accused of lying to the world about the coronavirus, defending Chinese propaganda about its origins, and it has come under fire for saying killing babies in abortions is somehow an essential procedure as the world deals with the coronavirus pandemic. Trump announced Tuesday that the U.S. will halt monetary contributions to the World Health Organization while the administration reviews the mistakes it made managing the pandemic.

Now, president Trump has announced where the funds will be going instead — to two organizations fighting the coronavirus: Samaritan’s Purse and the Red Cross. The White House budget office has told federal agencies to redirect World Health Organization funds to groups that do similar work, indicating a 60-day suspension of WHO funding ordered by President Trump will be permanent.
The funds will flow instead to outfits such as the Red Cross and Samaritan’s Purse after Trump said Tuesday the WHO needed reform after failing to vet coronavirus data from China, contributing to a pandemic that infected more than 650,000 US residents.
The US provided roughly 10 percent of the WHO’s $4.8 billion annual budget. Most US contributions were “voluntary.” Annual US dues were just $58 million, with the next installment not expected until September. An administration official told The Post that efforts were underway to redirect “every single pot of money” from the WHO to other organizations. Large international relief organizations already are in many cases doing similar work, they said.

The funding battle is likely not over, as Democrats will likely challenge Trump and attempt to stick WHO funding in future spending bills. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday vowed to challenge what she called Trump’s “illegal” suspension of WHO funds but did not specify how. The White House argues there’s no legal obligation to fund the WHO.

But White House officials defended Trump’s decision: “If you pay a contractor to build you a house and the roof falls in, you don’t keep paying them, you find a new contractor,” the official told the Daily Caller. “WHO clearly failed to do its job, and continues to make serious mistakes that puts our nation’s safety and security at risk, including allowing the reopening of wet markets. It shouldn’t be controversial for the U.S. to want to partner with international organizations that will actually protect international health.”

China, who started the pandemic, ponied up a paltry $20 million,” a senior Trump administration official told The Post. “They refuse to pay even 3 percent into the world fund to respond to the virus that their own actions caused to spread rapidly outside of their country. That’s shocking and a disgrace.” “With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have deep concerns whether America’s generosity has been put to the best use possible,” Trump said during his daily White House briefing where he announced the WHO funding cut. “Our country will be forced to find other ways to work with other nations to achieve public health goals,” he said.
“The reality is that the WHO failed to adequately obtain, vet, and share information in a timely and transparent fashion,” he said. [italics and colored emphasis mine]

The WHO received heavy criticism earlier this month when it falsely claimed abortion is considered an essential service during the coronavirus pandemic. It said that “services related to reproductive health are considered to be part of essential services during the COVID-19 outbreak.” “Women’s choices and rights to sexual and reproductive health care should be respected, irrespective of whether or not she has a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection,” WHO said in the statement. Medical groups representing over 33,000 doctors disagree.
Meanwhile, United Nations leaders are pushing through a $2 billion spending plan for the coronavirus that includes funding to abort unborn babies in elective abortions based on WHO recommendations. “Women’s choices and rights to sexual and reproductive health care should be respected irrespective of COVID-19 status, including access to contraception and safe abortion to the full extent of the law,” the WHO manual reads, after pointing out that there are no known complications related to pregnancy from the novel coronavirus.
Last week, a WHO staffer said the WHO has been working to ensure abortion drugs are considered “essential”during a webinar hosted by a pro-abortion journal. She praised abortion groups urging governments to designate abortion “essential.” She also promoted the WHO’s official view that where access to abortion is difficult, women should self-administer abortions.

America gives huge amounts of money to the United Nations. However, President Donald Trump and his administration have been pushing back aggressively against the United Nations’ pro-abortion agenda, insisting that countries support women and children, born and unborn. In 2017, Trump stopped giving tax dollars to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) because it pushes abortions on other countries and has worked with China for decades to implement its forced abortion population control policies. Trump renewed the order again in 2018 and 2019. The decision cut $32.5 million in funding from the UNFPA budget.
Still, it appears that more needs to be done. Abortion groups receive funding from many different sources, both government and private; and cutting off taxpayer funding to abortions entirely is not easily done. And while the Trump administration has been working to restore a culture of life at the United Nations, there are many other countries and activists trying to do the exact opposite.

There is nothing essential about aborting an unborn baby. Abortions destroy unborn babies’ lives and often put their mothers at risk. The world’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has been to devote huge amounts of resources and sacrifice greatly to save human lives. If only society would make similar efforts to save babies in the womb.

#3001 (4/17) "On 4 Fronts, How China Quietly Infiltrates American Life"

"ON 4 FRONTS, HOW CHINA QUIETLY INFILTRATES AMERICAN LIFE" - Jarrett Stepman / @JarrettStepman / April 15, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/04/15/on-4-fronts-how-china-quietly-infiltrates-american-life
While many mainstream American media outlets allow themselves to be platforms for Chinese government propaganda, some work directly for the People's Republic of China. Pictured: Local residents hold Chinese flags Oct. 18, 2019, in the center of Qinzhou, China. (Photo: Artur Widak/NurPhoto/Getty Images)

As the world continues to battle the terrible COVID-19 pandemic that began in Wuhan, China, it also must battle the lack of information or outright disinformation coming from the government where the new coronavirus originated. If it wasn’t already clear before the coronavirus outbreak, China is particularly aggressive in how it tries to control the spread of information, not just in regard to its own citizens, but people around the globe.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put these efforts on overdrive. One eye-opener came when President Donald Trump got aggressive last week with a reporter from Phoenix Television, who first stated that Chinese companies such as Huawei and Alibaba have donated supplies to the U.S. Then she asked the president:  “Are you cooperating with China?” Trump responded by asking if she worked for China or if her company is owned by the Chinese state. Despite her denial, the answer essentially is “yes.” But Beijing’s influence is far wider than one small-time media outlet that most Americans never heard of.

Here are four major fronts on which China’s communist regime tries to spread influence and propaganda outside its borders.

News Media - While many mainstream American media outlets allow themselves to be platforms for Chinese government propaganda, some work directly for the People’s Republic of China. Many of these publications have been working overtime as the Chinese government attempts to distract attention from its early handling of the COVID-19 outbreak and continues to mislead the world about what’s happening in China.
Peter Hasson, a reporter for The Daily Caller News Foundation, laid out what exactly Phoenix TV is and how it’s connected to the communist government of China. Hasson found that, according to the outlet’s 2018 interim report, China Wise International Limited, a subsidiary of a bank run by the Chinese government, owns a minority stake in Phoenix TV. Although Phoenix TV is not directly run by the Chinese government, it effectively is controlled by the government. The Hoover Institution, a conservative think tank, listed Phoenix TV in its review of the Chinese-language media landscape.
Hoover called Phoenix TV, which is based in mainland China as well as Hong Kong, a “quasi-official” media outlet of the Chinese government “with links to the [People’s Republic of China’s] Ministry of State Security.” Despite this, the reporter who questioned Trump is a part of the White House Foreign Press Group and has regular access to press briefings at the White House. As the Hoover Institution noted, however, Phoenix TV is hardly alone, as there are numerous other outlets directly or indirectly tied to the Chinese government.
One of those is China Daily, an official outlet for the Chinese government, which for decades has aggressively published propaganda in major newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. The Washington Free Beacon reported that China Daily repeatedly violates the Foreign Agents Registration Act “by failing to provide full disclosures about its purchases.”

Social Media- China has, of course, exerted its influence over social media and other widely used platforms. TikTok, a rapidly growing social media app that allows users to post short videos, has come under scrutiny for its connection to China. TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a company based in China, though the service—like countless other social media and internet platforms—isn’t available in its home country.
But TikTok has a massive audience overseas. The app had been downloaded over 750 million times in a year, The New York Times reported in late 2019.The parent company denies any kind of censorship or tracking of data; however, many accuse TikTok of doing both. “There continues to be ample and growing evidence that TikTok’s platform for Western markets, including those in the U.S., is censoring content that is not in line with the Chinese Government and Communist Party directives,” wrote Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in a letter to the Treasury Department in October 2019. The U.S. government’s Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States has launched an investigation into TikTok.
Zoom, which has become a massively popular video service in the time of the coronavirus, has had issues protecting customers from Chinese spies, U.S. intelligence officials told Time magazine. “More than anyone else, the Chinese are interested in what American companies are doing,” Time quoted one of the anonymous officials as saying. In particular, Zoom’s encryption service is what opens up the potential for Chinese spying. According to reports, as of April 18, the company will begin letting customers decide not to route their data through China, which Zoom’s CEO admitted was happening before.

Hollywood Movies - The NBA isn’t the only organization that has become reliant on China’s business to the point that it is willing to let the communist regime intimidate its employees into censoring themselves. Hollywood’s connections to communist China now run deep.
As The Heritage Foundation’s Mike Gonzalez said on the “Heritage Explains” podcast, China has enormous power in Hollywood to shape what audiences there and elsewhere see.  The Chinese assert this power by funding movies, including blockbusters such as Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible: Fallout” in 2018, and demanding censorship so that movie studios can get access to the vast Chinese market. “American audiences are being submitted to censorship, not our own censorship, but a foreign power’s censorship, and a Communist Party censorship,” Gonzalez said. “But we get shown a very benign view of China, in which China is a normal country, no different from Paris, or Britain, or Germany. That is not the case, obviously. If you speak against the government in Germany, nothing happens to you. If you speak against the government in China, they’ll throw you in jail.”
Not only do movie studios bow to censorship, but they now preemptively self-censor to avoid the potential for losing Chinese sales and funding. The takeover of Hollywood is just one element of how China uses our culture-making industries to promote its agenda.

College Campuses - Since 2003, hundreds of so-called Confucius Institutes have opened on college campuses around the United States. Their activities have included pressuring schools to shut down events featuring the Dalai Lama and generally shaping the narrative about Tibet, the Tiananmen Square massacre, and the existence of Taiwan. The Confucius Institutes actually have little to do with Confucius, the ancient Chinese philosopher. As Charles Horner wrote for the Claremont Review of Books, it would be more accurate to call them the “Mao Zedong Institutes,” after the China’s first communist dictator.
Although the Confucius Institutes operate under the guise of education, Horner noted, “they are really about keeping tabs on Chinese students in America, spreading propaganda, meddling in American politics generally, and performing espionage.” A Chinese minister of propaganda, Liu Yunshan, said in 2010 that the institutes have a mission: “Coordinate the efforts of overseas and domestic propaganda, [and] further create a favorable international environment for us.”
According to Politico, Yunshan wrote:With regard to key issues that influence our sovereignty and safety, we should actively carry out international propaganda battles against issuers such as Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, human rights and Falun Gong.  … We should do well in establishing and operating overseas cultural centers and Confucius Institutes. After Congress passed a bill limiting funding to schools that have a Confucius Institute, many of the institutes closed around the country.

In coming days, Americans and others around the world would do well to reexamine their connection and vulnerability to China’s ruthless communist government, which, in controlling its own population, injected a deadly pandemic into the global bloodstream.

#3000! (4/16) "Barr: ‘Even in Times of Emergency,’ Federal Law Prohibits Religious Discrimination"

"BARR: ‘EVEN IN TIMES OF EMERGENCY,’ FEDERAL LAW PROHIBITS RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION" - Mary Margaret Olohan / @MaryMargOlohan / April 15, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/04/15/barr-even-in-times-of-emergency-federal-law-prohibits-religious-discrimination/
"Government may not impose special restrictions on religious activity that do not also apply to similar nonreligious activity,” Attorney General William Barr says. Pictured: Barr speaks at the National Opioid Summit at the U.S. Department of Justice on March 6, 2020, in Washington, D.C. (Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty Images)

Attorney General William Barr said in a statement Tuesday that “even in times of emergency,” federal law prohibits religious discrimination. The attorney general released a statement on religious practices and social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic. It came after Barr intervened in a Mississippi church’s lawsuit against Greenville police, who ticketed congregants during a drive-in service. The ticketing “strongly suggests that the city’s actions target religious conduct,” Barr said, according to Fox News.

While Barr told Americans to follow social distancing directions issued by state and local authorities, he noted that “even in times of emergency, when reasonable and temporary restrictions are placed on rights, the First Amendment and federal statutory law prohibit discrimination against religious institutions and religious believers.” “Thus, government may not impose special restrictions on religious activity that do not also apply to similar nonreligious activity,” Barr said. “For example, if a government allows movie theaters, restaurants, concert halls, and other comparable places of assembly to remain open and unrestricted, it may not order houses of worship to close, limit their congregation size, or otherwise impede religious gatherings.” He added: “Religious institutions must not be singled out for special burdens.”

Barr referred to the Statement of Interest that the Department of Justice filed Tuesday in support of the Mississippi church, Temple Baptist Church, saying the city “appears to have thereby singled churches out as the only essential service (as designated by the state of Mississippi) that may not operate despite following all [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and state recommendations regarding social distancing.”

Where states have not acted evenhandedly, they must have compelling reason to impose restrictions on places of worship, the attorney general said. They also must ensure that the restrictions are “narrowly tailored to advance its compelling interest.”

“Religion and religious worship continue to be central to the lives of millions of Americans,” Barr said. He continued: “This is true more so than ever during this difficult time. The pandemic has changed the ways Americans live their lives. Religious communities have rallied to the critical need to protect the community from the spread of this disease by making services available online and in ways that otherwise comply with social distancing guidelines.”

The attorney general concluded by noting that the DOJ will be watching for any state or local government that “singles out, targets, or discriminates against any house of worship for special restrictions.”

#2999 (4/15) "The Pandemic and the Persecuted"

"THE PANDEMIC AND THE PERSECUTED" - Arielle Del Turco, Washington Update, April 14, 2020; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20200414/pandemic-persecuted
Christians in America and around the world are adjusting to the challenges brought on by the coronavirus. For the persecuted abroad, the virus is an added pressure, as some governments are seeking to use the crisis as an opportunity to crack down on believers. Here in the United States, most governmental authorities are imposing reasonable restrictions and working with churches and other houses of worship. Yet there remains the need to be on guard. Overseas, the persecuted are facing more hostile governments that are blatantly using the crisis to suppress religious exercise and extend their long arm of state control.

In China, where the novel coronavirus originated, the Chinese government's systematic infringement of religious freedom continues uninterrupted. While Christians waited out the coronavirus lockdown at home, authorities removed crosses from churches. This removal effort is a part of China's plan to "sinicize" Christianity by making it look less like true Christianity and more like a Chinese Communist Party propaganda tool.

In neighboring North Korea, the regime continues to claim that the country has zero coronavirus cases. Meanwhile, the efforts to ramp up containment of the virus suggests the regime is hiding the truth. The virus poses a particular threat to the estimated 50,000 Christians detained in filthy, cramped prison camps, enduring starvation and torture at the hands of North Korean authorities. U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback has called for the release of such prisoners of conscience in light of COVID-19.

In Iran, one of the places hit hardest by the coronavirus, Christians are especially concerned. For the underground churches that used to meet secretly in houses, congregants now meet virtually on encrypted apps like Telegram. Christian prisoners face the most intense threat in Iran's inhumane prisons. Iran's notoriously oppressive regime has already released thousands of prisoners for fear the virus would spread among prisoners. However, the regime refused to release several Christians imprisoned for their faith.

Some countries in Africa have only recently implemented coronavirus lockdowns. As Christians in Nigeria begin to worry about COVID-19, their fears are compounded by threats of violence from the terrorist group Boko Haram and Fulani militants who often target Christians to be kidnapped or killed. Amid a global pandemic, their attacks have not stopped. Just this month, Fulani militants killed an evangelical pastor and three congregants in the pastor's home.

In India, cultural discrimination against Christians is endangering Christian healthcare workers. Reports are surfacing that government officials are choosing to send Christian nurses to care for contagious coronavirus patients because Christians are considered "expendable" in India. This long-standing discrimination against religious minorities has been getting worse in recent years. This incident during a pandemic is only a reflection of the hostility religious minorities in India face on a regular basis.

For Americans, an unforeseen result of the global outbreak is that many of us are experiencing an external pressure that affects our weekly public worship gatherings -- something that the persecuted church experiences often. This interruption in our routine offers us a unique opportunity to reflect on the plight of persecuted believers who are forced to meet in hiding or via technology. While our challenges are not the same as theirs, the shared experience of coronavirus enables us to relate to the persecuted church in a new way.

In the new environment caused by the health crisis, American Christians are on the alert for violations of their religious freedom. When the authority used by the state is abused, it's appropriate for U.S. citizens to make it clear to our leaders that we will not allow them to target churches unfairly or violate our religious freedom during our current crisis. At the same time, American Christians can use the religious freedom protected by our laws to pray for and advocate on behalf of Christians around the world who are targeted by governments or terrorist groups even during a global health crisis.

#2998 (4/14) "The Very Remarkable President Donald Trump"

Truly remarkable! - Stan]
Source: AP Photo/Andrew Harnik

In spite of the nasty negative press, the Democrats and the RINOs (Republicans In Name Only), President Trump’s achievements are truly remarkable.

Years from now, history will note a major event that occurred in 2016, an event that significantly altered the course of the country and the world. At the time, the U.S. was in the last year of a 10-year economic slump. It was, in fact, the only 10-year period in history where the economy did not achieve 3 percent annual growth in any year. From 2007 to 2016 economic growth averaged about 2 percent. That subpar growth rate led to fewer opportunities for Americans. That led to poor employment prospects and stagnant wages. Many Americans had no opportunity. That led to resentment.

Wary citizens were beginning to reject capitalism in favor of socialism. The country was headed in an un-American direction. On the world stage, a number of threats existed. There were numerous and long-term problems in the Middle East. Russia and China were going on offense, and North Korea was getting serious about displaying their strength. As for America’s foreign policy, it was as if someone gave the “stand down” order to every conflict, which resulted in the U.S. taking very soft, and ultimately weak, positions.

Many Americans began to place security above freedom. They wanted the government to pay for their health care, their higher education, their basic income, and even their housing. Of course, the government gets the money by taxing income earners. Had the election in 2016 gone differently, spend-and-tax government actions would have been implemented. Those actions permanently slow economic growth. The reason is very simple. All income transfer programs take income away from people who earned it and give it to people who, for whatever reason, have not earned it. That means income earners have less incentive to earn and income receivers have no incentive to earn. Both groups will contribute less and that will slow economic growth. The spend-and-tax philosophy, as well as the increased social responsibility direction, needed to be changed.

So Donald Trump came along. He was a very, very successful businessperson and TV personality. Although elected president, he was not a politician. But Trump’s message was welcomed by Americans. He told people to look in the mirror. He asked them to see where they were and what they had. He then asked, “What do you have to lose?” Many Americans saw they had little to show for the last 10 years. For those who were very disappointed with what they had, he promised he would “Make America Great Again.”
He emphasized being great, winning, and returning to prosperity. His vision was always clear. Unfortunately, his unpolished and politically incorrect communication skills were not as clear, which allowed the strong Trump opposition to make things extremely difficult for the president.

So far, in his first term, he has endured a two-year special prosecutor investigation that concluded he did nothing wrong in Russia and wasn’t guilty of anything. Then he was impeached, also for doing nothing wrong.
During that same period, he tried to get economic growth to increase. But the Federal Reserve raised interest rates eight times from the end of 2016 to the end of 2018, thereby stifling growth.
In spite of that, he got economic activity to increase significantly. That resulted in record-low unemployment, long with low inflation and much more opportunity for every American.
On foreign policy, Trump takes a much tougher stance. His aggressive “peace through strength” philosophy is working. Although there is risk when he gets tough with things like tariffs, sanctions and military actions, the results so far have been very positive. When imposed, countries have responded in a manner favorable to the U.S.

History will note that Donald Trump was remarkable. In spite of more than 90 percent of media coverage of him being negative, in spite of every Democrat consistently opposing anything he wants to do, and in spite of some members of his own party being against him, he has managed to change the direction of the country.
He is moving toward more individual freedom, more individual responsibility, lower rates of taxation, and a smaller role for government. Those are the principles that allowed our country’s economy to increase from birth to the largest, most prosperous in the world in less than 150 years.

Today he sits with the weight of the world on his shoulders. The nation’s personal health and economic well-being are at risk. The president will soon have an extremely difficult decision to make regarding when the economy should reopen.  He said, “I have to make the biggest decision of my life. I hope to God  I make the right one.” A remarkable person is likely to make a remarkable decision.

#2997 (4/13) "'Sunday Is Coming'"

----------------------

"'SUNDAY IS COMING'" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, April 10, 2020; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20200410/sunday-coming [NOTE: Though Easter is now past, the truths of this article in our present crisis are still important to relect on.]

"We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair..." -- 2 Corinthians 4:8

Writing about 20 years after the first Good Friday, the apostle Paul penned a letter to the believers at Corinth, acknowledging the difficulties and challenges they were facing. But although they were "hard-pressed on every side," Paul reminds these early Christians that the overcoming power of God was still at work in them, and even their trials and hardships served an important purpose -- making Jesus known.

Our country, in fact, the world, is facing unparalleled difficulties and challenges with the coronavirus that has spread around the globe. Economies have been shuttered, people have lost their jobs, and there is anxiety and uncertainty about the future. A lot of what we trusted in, or at least what we've come to depend on, has been shaken, leaving many wondering what they can hold on to.

The church has not been exempted from this shaking. For the first time in over a century, the lights will be out in most churches on the most significant Sunday of the year for Christians -- Resurrection Sunday. But just because churches cannot physically gather for worship this weekend does not mean the light of the gospel will not be seen. In fact, although this present crisis has been difficult for everyone, many churches have been rising to the challenge to serve their congregations and communities in heroic ways. Whether it is hosting food drives, delivering meals to nurses and doctors, offering free childcare for first responders, delivering groceries to elderly neighbors, or setting up a "prayer tent" and ministering to people in the community, Jesus's promise that even the "gates of hell shall not prevail" against the church has proven true again (Matthew 16:18).

Today, many people are afraid. The uncertainty of the future has created enormous anxiety. Crisis hotlines are reporting a record number of calls. President Trump has said we are fighting a war against an unseen enemy. This is a war being fought on two fronts: there is the virus that poses a deadly threat to our health, but there is also an economic threat to our economy that was until very recently producing remarkable results. For many, this shaking is revealing another more profound need -- a spiritual foundation.
Herein lies an opportunity and a reminder of the church's purpose. For those who have a relationship with God the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ, these times are no less of a challenge. Like everyone else, our portfolios have taken a hit, our businesses are shuttered, and our families are limited in their activities. But we have a foundation on which to stand, and like Paul said, although we are perplexed, we are not in despair. But why is this?
The reason is that, although we face an uncertain future, followers of Jesus know that our God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and His promises still stand. A faith-fortifying promise that we cling to is that no matter what our circumstances are, our God has promised, "I will not leave you or forsake you" (Joshua 1:5; cf. Hebrews 13:5).
Jesus told us not to be anxious about the temporal things of this life such as food, clothing, or shelter. Our Father knows we need these things and will provide them as we seek Him first (Matt. 6:25). Moreover, He promised to be with us: "I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).
On the basis of these promises, Paul said we can have confidence that ALL things -- which includes even the coronavirus -- work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28).
Shaken by the events of this world, we have the opportunity to point those who are fearful, anxious, and in despair to the most significant event in human history that we celebrate this weekend -- the sacrificial death and victorious resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Consider this final thought: all the horrors of Good Friday -- the ridicule, the scourging, the crown of thorns, the disciples' abandonment, crucifixion on a Roman cross, and, most significantly, bearing the full wrath of God against every sin -- were embraced willingly by Jesus. Weeks earlier, knowing full well what lay ahead, Jesus nevertheless "set his face to go to Jerusalem" (Luke 9:51). Why? Because He wants a relationship with us. Incredibly, even as Jesus made His way to the Garden of Gethsemane where He would be betrayed, He had us on His mind and prayed for us (John 17:20).

So today, as we ponder the significance of Good Friday and look forward to Easter Sunday, we know that although we are perplexed and "hard-pressed on every side" -- perhaps more acutely than ever before this Holy Week -- we are not crushed or in despair because we know that God is working, even in these difficult times. Reflect on Paul's summary of what Good Friday means for us who know Christ:
"For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person -- though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die -- but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life." (Romans 5:6-10).

May these truths resonate deeply in our hearts today as we consider Jesus's death and the awful crucifixion that was required to atone for sin. And, remember, even on the day we mark the darkest moment in the history of the world, that despite the current darkness, "Sunday is coming."
