#3068 (7/6) "3 Reasons America Is Great"

Independence Day in 2020 will have great meaning to many Americans. As we’ve seen many symbols of America’s past get literally smashed by mobs, it’s important for those who still love their country to reflect on why it is exceptional and worth fighting for.
America has always been great and can be greater still. This is certainly not an exhaustive list of why America is great, of which there are almost countless examples big and small. But these examples are more unique to America, unique to why America rose from nothing to become the world’s preeminent superpower in such a short amount of time.

1. A Culture of Self-Government
Americans, even before the birth of the United States in 1776, have always been a self-governing people. One of the first orders of business for the Pilgrim settlers when they arrived on the shores of Massachusetts was to create the Mayflower Compact, a basic statement of self-government and loyalty to the British crown. The Jamestown colony in Virginia set up the House of Burgesses in 1619, the first legislative assembly in the New World. Following their heritage, the British colonies in America almost immediately established institutions of self-government where community participation in the creation and upholding of laws was extensive.
But in the almost two centuries between the arrival of British colonists in America and the American Revolution, the colonists’ attachment to self-government deepened in comparison to their cousins back in England, where representation was often more symbolic rather than actual. Amid Parliament’s ultimately foolish attempts to ham-handedly rein in the colonies at the end of the French and Indian War, it was the Crown that triggered the separation, the drive for total independence.
The thought of losing their grip on self-government made the colonists believe that they would soon end up in the vice of absolute tyranny. After years of discontent and pleading with British authorities to loosen their grip of control, the colonies rebelled. The Declaration of Independence, a remarkable and timeless document, did not just lay out the essential God-given rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in its most famous lines. It also lays out the blow by blow steps of the British government and the colonies to establish that it was not just the rights of the colonists that had been violated, but that the very tools of self-government that could have rectified the situation had been arbitrarily stripped from them. Americans were a people fitted for liberty and would tolerate no less.

2. The Constitution and the Rule of Law
When the Founding Fathers set about creating our own system of government, they codified the principles of self-government to serve countless generations unborn. After the false start, so to speak, of the Articles of Confederation, the Framers wrote, and the American people ratified, the Constitution of the United States. This remarkable document created a framework of America’s federal system that lasts still today despite the countless societal changes that have occurred in the last two centuries. And while, in many ways, that constitutional and federal system has been eroded over time, Americans have remained committed to the idea of the Constitution as the glue that defines our government and binds Americans under a single system with many parts.
This is the cornerstone of liberty and order that defines our republic, ensures that we have an energetic but ultimately limited government. Certainly, other nations have codified their laws and created founding documents of many stripes, but none matches the enduring legacy of the Constitution of the United States. The American civilization may be young, but our system of government is quite old, and has excelled through the test of time.

3. The American Dream
Self-government and the Constitution have made America strong and adaptable to changing circumstances. Just as importantly, they’ve created a system whereby the average person can thrive and prosper. The country’s strength lies in the millions of free-born, self-governing, and self-sufficient people who have taken the protections our unique government provides and created the most wealthy and prosperous nation in human history.
Americans are, and have always been, an enterprising people. But more than just create wealth, we have used our wealth and prosperity. America’s attachment to the rule of law and defense of private property has allowed the growth of an expansive middle-class. Yes, America has produced many titans of industry, but the real source of our strength is the fact that the average American has had opportunities to generate wealth and prosperity and create a vibrant civil society.  Many homesteaders went West to get rich, but many more went West to build families and ensure that their children would have a better life than they had. That’s the spirit of America.

We have used our tremendous resources not only to improve our own lives but the lives of others. And because of our enormous prosperity Americans remain, by far, the most generous people on Earth. This Fourth of July, as with every Independence Day, we should be thankful and grateful to be Americans, we should be proud of what our country—though imperfect as all of mankind is imperfect—has accomplished. It is important and essential that at this time we remember, defend, and pass on what has made this country great.

#3067 (7/5) SUNDAY SPECIAL "A New Declaration of Dependence—On God - Chuck Colson’s Haunting Fourth of July Message"

"A NEW DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE - ON GOD - CHUCK COLSON'S HAUNTING FOURTH OF JULY MESSAGE" - John Stonestreet/Chuck Colson, Breakpoint.org, 07/3/20; https://www.breakpoint.org/a-new-declaration-of-dependence-on-god/
On July 4, 2004, Chuck Colson’s BreakPoint commentary was entitled “A New Declaration of Dependence.” Reading through it again recently, I was struck by just how prophetic his words were. As a student of history, Chuck not only understood the founding principles of our nation, supremely expressed in the Declaration of Independence, he understood on what those principles were grounded. What happens, Chuck asked, when the foundations are rejected? What happens when religion and truth and public virtue are all made non-essential? What happens when citizens want the benefits of the American experiment without taking seriously what it requires from us?

Here is Chuck Colson from July 2, 2004:
July 4 celebrates our liberty and our national independence. Americans will hoist their flags, march in parades, and set off fireworks. I get a thrill every time I hear the cannons blast that rousing finale of the “1812 Overture.” And I get a lump in my throat whenever I join in singing “America, America, God shed His grace on thee.”
Indeed, God has blessed America. This nation, dedicated to the proposition that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, has endured 228 [now 244] years. America is the oldest constitutional republic on earth.

But all is not well in our land. When Thomas Jefferson penned the immortal words of the Declaration of Independence, he deliberately appealed to the Creator. He acknowledged an overriding obligation to “Nature and Nature’s God.” And he understood that ordered liberty is not just a subjective preference, but a divinely ordained condition for which human beings are designed. But over the last few decades, legions of skeptics have mounted a massive assault on these “self-evident truths.” In prestigious law schools, in the halls of government, and especially in the Supreme Court, God is often banished from public conversation. If a public school teacher introduces Jefferson’s ideas and language into the classroom today, she would likely be called on the carpet—and possibly disciplined.

This assault on God in public culture severely damages our republic. If God is thrown out of our history, we lose our basis for believing that individuals have rights and dignity. In an empty universe, we have no meaning, no value. Without God there are no unalienable rights, and no certain proof that liberty is better than tyranny or that life better than death. Everything is a matter of opinion and power.

The references to God in the Declaration of Independence provide a foundation for a moral argument within civil society. And moral truths pervade our founding documents from beginning to end. Without God as the source of all those moral principles, the public square would quickly revert to the law of the jungle. Brutish power would prevail. The weak, the unborn, the elderly, and the gravely ill could be quietly terminated.

As much as I enjoy the anthems and the fireworks, more than that is called for on this July 4th. We need to confess our moral failures and our national sins. Repent of the lies that have justified killing innocent babies and the elderly. Renewal begins on our knees. It’s there that we hear soul-searching questions from God Himself, asking: “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?…Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
Our nation’s founding document declared independence from Britain, but, with equal fervor, declared dependence upon God. Expressing “firm reliance on the Protection of divine Providence,” the signers committed the American experiment to their Maker. The Spirit of 1776 was reverence and trust.
So as we mark this solemn occasion, let us seek a rebirth of true liberty, which is possible only when governed by divine law. For, without God, we can never have “liberty and justice for all.”

#3066 (7/4) PRO-LIFE SAT: "Supreme Court Denies Pro-Life Free Speech, OKs Laws Banning Sidewalk Counseling at Abortion Clinics"

"SUPREME COURT DENIES PRO-LIFE FREE SPEECH, OKs LAWS BANNING SIDEWALK COUNSELING AT ABORTION CLINICS" -  Steven Ertelet,   JUL 2, 2020 |   https://www.lifenews.com/2020/07/02/supreme-court-lets-laws-ban-pro-life-people-from-sidewalk-counseling-at-abortion-clinics/ [AS I SEE IT: Once more this week, a supposedly pro-life majority decides against pro-lifers. The fact that this decision that denies certain Americans of their free speech rights is handed down days before our nation celebrates its Independence Day is not just ironic but a very sad commentary on the state of our nation. - Stan]
Another U.S. Supreme Court decision brought more disappointing news Thursday when the justices refused to hear cases involving pro-life advocates’ freedom to speak on the public sidewalks outside abortion facilities.
CBS News reports the justices decided not to consider two similar cases from Chicago and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania challenging buffer zone ordinances outside city abortion facilities.
In Chicago, the ordinance designates a 50-foot radius from an abortion clinic entrance as an area in which people are prohibited from intentionally coming closer than 8 feet to any other person, unless that person gives permission, “for the purpose of passing a leaflet or handbill to, displaying a sign to, or engaging in oral protest, education, or counseling with such other person.”
The Pennsylvania city ordinance similarly makes it illegal for a person to “knowingly congregate, patrol, picket or demonstrate in a zone extending 20 feet from any portion of an entrance to, exit from, or driveway” of an abortion facility.

Pro-life sidewalk counselors sued both cities, slamming the ordinances for violating their First Amendment free speech rights. The Third and Seventh circuit appeals courts refused to block the ordinances, but the pro-lifers appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Though the majority of the Supreme Court justices refused to hear the pro-life advocates’ appeal, Justice Clarence Thomas said he would have heard the case, according to the report.

Veronica Price, one of the sidewalk counselors who sued Chicago, said she simply wants to offer hope and help to people considering abortion. She is represented by the Thomas More Society. “Many parents are unaware of the support that is available,” Price said in 2017. “By providing information on pregnancy resource centers, church programs, social services and adoption agencies, I can reach out and caringly offer help.”

Price said the buffer zone also hurts women’s right to make an informed choice about their unborn baby. Buffer zones not only prevent free speech, they also block pro-lifers from offering life-affirming information and support to pregnant moms. Often it is information that women will not receive inside an abortion facility, including the material support available to them and their babies, the risks of an abortion and the facts about their unborn baby’s development. “By unconstitutionally denying my right to share important information with women at a critical time, we are doing them a great disservice,” Price said.

The Liberty Counsel is representing Pennsylvania pro-life sidewalk counselors Colleen Reilly and Becky Biter who regularly engaged in peaceful counseling on public sidewalks around a city abortion clinic. They said they have been harassed and intimidated by clinic staff and the local police since the city enacted the ordinance, which was drafted and pushed by Planned Parenthood.

Pro-life advocates have been fighting against city and state buffer zones for years. In 2014, pro-lifers won a victory when the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously struck down a 35-foot Massachusetts buffer zone law. However, other smaller buffer zones still are in place in the U.S.

#3065 (7/3) "Independence Day Is a Time to Reaffirm That America Must Stay Strong to Preserve Peace"

"INDEPENDENCE DAY IS A TIME TO REAFFIRM THAT AMERICA MUST STAY STRONG TO PRESERVE PEACE" - Kay C. James / @KayColesJames / July 03, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/07/03/independence-day-is-a-time-to-reaffirm-that-america-must-stay-strong-to-preserve-peace/ [AS I SEE IT: As dangerous are the implications of the Leftists in Congress trying to cut our defense budget, notice that it does not make the news cycle of the mainstream media. They seem to busy to promote panic and report fake news tthey also choose to ignore this kind of real news. Shame on them! - Stan]
Addressing West Point graduates in 1981, President Ronald Reagan said, “A truly successful army is one that—because of its strength and ability and dedication—will not be called upon to fight, for no one will dare to provoke it.” (Photo: EMP Photography/Getty Images)

As Independence Day approaches and Americans look forward to celebrating the unparalleled peace, prosperity, and freedom that this nation has provided, many in Congress don’t seem to understand that we have these gifts because we maintain a powerful and ready military that prevents our adversaries—from communist dictatorships to terrorist states—from destroying what so many lives and so much treasure have been sacrificed to preserve. President Ronald Reagan aptly called it “peace through strength.”

Yet, precisely at a time when the nation is reeling from a deadly disease outbreak, racial unrest, and economic upheaval, lawmakers in the House of Representatives are proposing to weaken this country even further. They have leveraged the tragedy of the global COVID-19 pandemic to renew their quest to slash our defense budget. They argue that America should turn inward and ignore the many looming outside threats to our security.

It’s not surprising that the far left is trying to push its agenda during a time of crisis when Americans are distracted. After all, we’ve heard politicians on the left openly say before that they shouldn’t let “a serious crisis go to waste” and that the pandemic is “a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.” Members of Congress have already held up desperately-needed pandemic relief for hundreds of millions of Americans because they demanded that relief bills include unrelated items like solar and wind tax credits, collective bargaining power for unions, stricter emissions standards for airlines, and same-day voter registration.

As if holding relief for ransom wasn’t despicable enough, now they want to pursue an agenda that would once again dangerously compromise the safety of every single American: significantly reducing military funding at a time when those who want to do us harm are increasing theirs.
The Russian and the Chinese communist governments are openly hostile to the United States and have attempted to influence our elections, invaded our allies, and spread propaganda through our media. The Chinese government lied about the coronavirus and the fact that it could be transmitted to humans, causing a disastrous delay in the U.S. response that likely cost thousands more lives. Russia and China also continue to build up their militaries, including their nuclear capabilities, which they use for aggression, not for maintaining peace.

For the time being, America maintains the military advantage, but if we don’t invest in upgrading decades-old ships, planes, tanks, and other equipment, we will soon fall behind.
In its quest to dominate the world, China is growing military spending by over 6% a year, while the U.S. defense budget is not even keeping up with inflation. With a weaker and less capable American military, our adversaries would feel even more emboldened to act aggressively toward us and our allies. If they ever gained the upper hand against us militarily, it would take years for us to catch up, and by that time, it may be too late. When they’ve had the upper hand with other nations, they’ve shown their propensity to use it.

The United States has maintained military superiority for so long that many take it for granted, but it’s far from guaranteed. We must ensure that the bad actors who desire to dominate and destroy other nations—including our own—never win this competition. The United States will only be able to do that if we have a defense budget that is sufficient to support our current troops and equip them for the future. Reagan, when addressing West Point graduates in 1981, stated, “A truly successful army is one that—because of its strength and ability and dedication—will not be called upon to fight, for no one will dare to provoke it.”

No one wants war, but slashing our defense budget and reducing our troops’ ability to do their jobs when our adversaries are becoming more aggressive would create a situation that could more easily lead to one. Those in Congress who don’t understand these threats are unwittingly putting our entire nation at risk. As we prepare to celebrate the independence of our nation and its founding promises of peace, prosperity, and freedom for all people, it’s important that we never take those precious gifts for granted. We must cherish them and pass them onto our children and grandchildren. We must also be prepared to fight for them, or else we will surely lose them.

Independence Day isn’t only about celebrating that moment in 1776 when we declared our independence and our freedom. It’s about reminding ourselves what we must do each and every day to preserve that freedom for this and future generations.

#3064 (7/2) "Supreme Court Says States Cannot Discriminate Against Religious Schools A Victory—at Last—for Religious Freedom"

"SUPREME COURT SAYS STATES CANNOT DISCRIMNINATE AGAINST RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS, A VICTORY - AT LAST - FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM" - John Stonestreet and Roberto Rivera, Breakpoint.org,  07/1/20p; https://breakpoint.org/supreme-court-says-states-cannot-discriminate-against-religious-schools
The past two weeks of Supreme Court rulings have not been encouraging. After the disastrous ruling in Bostock arbitrarily expanded civil rights protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity, the Court, in June Medical, all but handcuffed meaningful state efforts to restrict abortion.
Finally, yesterday, good news. The Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, held its ground on discrimination against religious education. In Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, the Court ruled that a state tax credit which “[discriminates] against religious schools and the families whose children attend or hope to attend them” violates the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause.

The case dates back to 2015 when the state of Montana created a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for individuals who donate to organizations that provide scholarships to private school students. After creating the program, the Montana Department of Revenue ruled that such a tax credit, if used to fund to religious private schools, would violate the state’s version of the “Blaine Amendment,” which prohibits state funding of religious education.
Kendra Espinoza, a single mom who works extra jobs in order to send her kids to a Christian school, challenged the Department of Revenue’s ruling in court. In late 2018, the Montana Supreme Court acknowledged that the Department’s ruling probably ran afoul of the U.S. Constitution’s Free Exercise Clause. However, instead of overturning the ruling, it invalidated the entire program. Thankfully, that didn’t work.
In his opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts said that “when otherwise eligible recipients are disqualified from a public benefit ‘solely because of their religious character,’ we must apply strict scrutiny.” His statement was a reference to the Trinity Lutheran decision, a case that was successfully argued by the Alliance Defending Freedom in 2017. “Strict scrutiny” means that the action can only be justified by a “compelling governmental interest.” Montana lacked a “compelling government interest.” Instead, the state argued that the law served “Montana’s interest in separating church and State ‘more fiercely’ than the Federal Constitution.”
Montana’s interest, replied Justice Roberts, is actually “limited by the Free Exercise Clause.” In other words, the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause cannot be pitted against each other. The separation of church and state cannot be done by discriminating against the Church, and religion is not a secondary part of the First Amendment.
And, Roberts continued, the attempt to sweep the Free Exercise problem under the rug by invalidating the whole program doesn’t change what he called Montana’s “error of federal law.” After all, because of the Trinity Lutheran decision, the Montana Court already knew the Department’s ruling was unconstitutional. But, instead of applying the decision as it should have, it invalidated the whole program “to make absolutely sure that religious schools received no aid.” That action in itself violated the Free Exercise Clause, according to Roberts: “A State need not subsidize private education. But once a State decides to do so, it cannot disqualify some private schools solely because they are religious.”

Roberts’ opinion is a resounding repudiation of dozens of “Blaine Amendments” in other states as well. Originally targeted to limit Catholic education, these amendments provide legal cover for treating religious institutions and the people who depend on them as second-class citizens. Roberts made it as clear as possible that they, and we, are not.
Roberts also rejected Justice Breyer’s argument for a “‘flexible, context-specific approach’ that ‘may well vary’ from case to case.” Religious institutions and citizens should not be at the mercy of courts waxing philosophical about the “purposes of the Religion Clauses,” and then applying them on an ad hoc basis. Not to mention, it’s hard to imagine Breyer’s “flexible, context-specific approach” being applied to any other right, such as abortion.

Perhaps the best part of this ruling is that it offers a roadmap for Christians who hope to help people like Kendra Espinoza afford Christian education. The Montana program can serve as a model for other states and could even open the door for other solutions such as vouchers. Educational innovation has long been among the best gifts of Christians to the wider world. This is an open door for us to be even more creative today.
That’s why this decision is such good news. After the earthquakes from the Court the past few weeks, it’s certainly nice to have some solid ground on which to stand.

#3063 (7/1) "Five Justices vs.The People"

"FIVE JUSTICES VS. THE PEOPLE" -  Tony Perkins, Washington Update, June 29, 2020; https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20200629/five-justices [AS I SEE IT: We need to be PRAYing that this coming  November's election will again give us a leader who will appoint a Constitutionally conservative pro-life justice to the Supreme Court, and that -  unlike the "conservative" justices who've decided wrongly in recent weeks - those justices will protect unborn babies and their Moms who choose to abort them. - Stan]
Chances are, these Supreme Court justices will never meet the parents of Jamie Lee Morales. They'll never have to look in the eyes of the little boy left behind by Tonya Reaves or console the husband of Jennifer Morbelli. They won't have to explain how Karnamaya Mongar survived war in Nepal only to die in the filthy recliner of a Philadelphia abortion center. Because even though three of them have daughters, the five justices who struck down Louisiana's abortion law don't seem to care that young women will keep dying because of courts like theirs.

"Unnecessary." That's the word the majority of justices used to describe a law that would have kept 10,000 women a year safe. Women, who, when they walk through the doors of Louisiana's abortion centers every year, are under the assumption they'll be protected. That their doctors care. Jamie Lee would give anything to warn them -- to tell them to turn back and go home -- but she'll never have the chance. She bled to death in the back of her sister's car because her abortionist didn't want to call an ambulance over the seven-inch gash he put in her uterus.

Today, five justices sided with him. They said asking doctors like Robert Rho to have a relationship with a local hospital was "a burden." That it didn't "further women's health." That it was "an obstacle to abortion access." By tearing down Louisiana's law, the Supreme Court gave women access all right -- to shoddy, life-threatening care. In Pennsylvania, that "care" was an inner-city torture chamber where "semi-conscious, moaning women sat on bloodstained blankets" in rooms that "reeked of urine." In Delaware, that "access" looks like unsterile instruments held by abortionists who don't even wear gloves. In Baton Rouge, it's a young mom sterilized for life, because workers couldn't stop the bleeding fast enough to prevent a complete hysterectomy.

These are the third-world conditions the Left fought for -- and won -- today. This is the "progress" that government-funded groups like Planned Parenthood are high-fiving Joe Biden over. The liberal media has screamed for the six years since it passed that Louisiana's law is about shutting down clinics. It's not. It's about forcing an industry that claims to put women first to prove it. "This kind of routine patient abandonment is not tolerated in any other medical specialty," one OB/GYN wrote in disgust. "Why only within the specialty purportedly dedicated to women's health?"

No one should care if it's "inconvenient" for these businesses to file the paperwork for admitting privileges. They should care that that when something goes wrong (and it does), women get the emergency help they need. "This case," Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) argued, "was about whether the states have a right and responsibility to institute basic health and safety regulations to protect women -- and whether the abortion industry should have the ability to strike down those commonsense health regulations." Together -- Mike as a young attorney and me as a state legislator -- we worked to stop these doctors from operating in filthy, disgusting conditions, only, 20 years later, to watch the Supreme Court wipe it all away.

Here we are, in a country willing to burn its cities to the ground to hold police accountable -- but when it comes to ending the brutality of the abortion industry, even our most powerful court hides behind black robes. It refuses to hear the cry of mothers who expected doctors to do their jobs. To keep them alive. To call 911 when their lives were hanging by a thread. It's a surreal day in America when the Supreme Court can invent a constitutional argument for subjecting women to dirty and dangerous abortion chambers like Kermit Gosnell's. Yet that's exactly what happened when five unelected justices decided to topple a law democratically enacted by the leaders of Louisiana, which required abortionists offer such "controversial" things as seamless, emergency care.

In this day and age, our justices have no excuses. We've all seen behind the curtain of the abortion industry. We know the evil that lurks there -- the greed, the callousness, the criminal indifference to women's health. The state did its part: it acted. Unfortunately, five justices -- including John Roberts -- ripped that right out of the people's hands and their elected officials, all to satisfy an industry that doesn't respect the patients it exploits. "Today," Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in disgust, "a majority of the Court perpetuates its ill-founded abortion jurisprudence by enjoining a perfectly legitimate state law and doing so without jurisdiction... Our abortion precedents are grievously wrong and should be overruled."

Keeping women safe isn't a question of abortion. It's a matter of humanity. And yet, as they've done with marriage, gender, abortion, and health care, five unelected people are making it impossible for leaders to run their states the way voters see fit. If any of us needed more proof about the importance of this year's election, this is it. When the next pro-life case makes its way to the high court, whose Supreme Court justices do you want deciding it?

Church burned to ashes in INDIA. In India, Pastor Sameer* and other believers in his village faced brutal persecution from their community. As the number of believers in the village grew, so did the opposition; Christians were told to renounce their faith … or else. Finally, Hindu extremists accused the Christians of opposing Hindu tradition and the culture of India by embracing Christianity; the extremists burned the small hut used for church fellowship.
Sameer’s immediate concern was to find a safe place for the believers to continue their regular prayer meetings. When partners of Open Doors heard about the situation, they arranged to assist the Christians in the area by constructing a hall where they could once again meet for worship and prayer.
July 1 - Pray for the safety of Pastor Sameer and his congregation as they continue to live in the same village where their church was burned.
