7/17 - PRAY for the President and others in leadership (1 Tim. 2:1-3)
Heavenly Father,
I pray that you will guide President Trump to seek YOU with all his heart, mind, soul, and strength. May he act with wisdom and strength against those whose actions would bring harm to this nation and the world now and for generations to come. I pray that you would strengthen his marriage and deepen the love he and his wife Melania share. Pray that you give them wisdom to speak into the life of their son Barron. Please protect him and his family and others in our leadership from physical harm that any might seek to do against them. May all that our President does bring honor and glory to YOU and cause him to draw in closer relationship with you. I ask this in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, Amen. P.S. - I highly recommend your reading "The Faith of Donald J. Trump." The copy I read is in my public library. It really helps us understand our 45th President better.
The above is a picture of the First Family on Mother's Day.
Can you believe how Barron has grown? Wow!
*For President Trump as he meets with newly appointed foreign ambassadors today.
*For God to be at work through the relationship between the U.S. and foreign governments to accomplish His perfect will on earth.
*For wisdom for the president as he makes decisions regarding foreign policy.
*For guidance for President Trump  as he works on a variety of issues, that God’s will would be accomplished through him.
*For God’s will to be accomplished  and for His name to be glorified and honored.

"SCHOOL CLOSURES HREATEN KIDS MORE THAN COVID-19, PEDIATRICIANS SAY" - Rachel Greszler / July 08, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/07/08/school-closures-threaten-kids-more-than-covid-19-pediatricians-say/

Access to education is foundational to American society and fundamental to the American ideal of providing equal opportunities. Yet amid COVID-19 shutdowns, many children have very limited or even no access to formal education. That has caused numerous problems for some children, including a loss in learning, an exacerbation of race- and income-based educational gaps, and, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, increased child abuse and neglect.
There are also added stresses and uncertainties for families.

Taking a holistic view of the situation, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a new report that advocates opening schools while providing age-based safety guidance. The academy’s report emphatically states:
"The APP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school. ...The importance of in-person learning is well-documented, and there is already evidence of the negative impacts on children because of school closures in the spring of 2020. Lengthy time away from school and associated interruption of supportive services often results in social isolation, making it difficult for schools to identify and address important learning deficits, as well as child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation. This, in turn, places children and adolescents at considerable risk of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality."

As detailed below, the consequences of school closures are significant. Yet, while still not entirely known, the benefits of school closures appear far less impactful because kids simply are not as affected by COVID-19. Kids are less likely to contract the virus (in the U.S., children represent about 22% of the population, but only 1.7% of COVID-19 cases), are less likely to spread it to others (a study of 54 Dutch families found no indication of children under 12 transmitting the disease), and are less likely to have severe symptoms if they do contract the virus.
A study from the Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment found that after reopening schools between May 11 and June 8, there have been few reports of infections among employees at schools and no reports of employees who were infected by children. That’s important information as school districts weigh the health and well-being concerns of children and teachers.
For kids, COVID-19 is far less dangerous than the seasonal flu. That’s not true for older individuals or those with comorbidities. But while at-risk adults can take measures to mitigate their risks of COVID-19, children are largely helpless against the harms caused by school closures. Those harms are at least threefold.

   First, there’s the education loss.
At best, it appears students are spending about half as much time engaged in learning, with many engaged for an hour or less per day. According to a McKinsey report, about half of students live in 28 states that have not mandated distance learning. And even at its best, full-time remote learning will not be the right fit for every child. Some families may prefer virtual learning for the time being, but that should not be the only option.
As Doug Lemov, an expert on effective teaching practices, said, “There’s a limit to how good a lesson can be when you’re trying to interact with your students through a keyhole in the door.”
McKinsey modeled the impacts of three different scenarios and found that the difference between fully reopening schools in the fall versus only partially reopening them through January 2021 would result in three to four months of lost learning for students with average remote learning instruction; seven to 11 months of lost learning for students with lower-quality remote instruction; and 12 to 14 months for students who receive no remote learning.

   Second, there’s the disparate impact.
As the McKinsey report noted: "Even more troubling is the context: the persistent achievement disparities across income levels and between white students and students of black and Hispanic heritage. School shutdowns could not only cause disproportionate learning losses for these students—compounding existing gaps—but also lead more of them to drop out. This could have long-term effects on these children’s long-term economic well-being and on the [U.S.] economy as a whole."
Surveys of parents confirm stark differences in experiences with a strong correlation to race and income level. According to a survey from advocacy group ParentsTogether, low-income families were five times more likely to report receiving no distance learning from their schools compared with the highest-income families (11% vs. 2%), were twice as likely to report that distance learning is going poorly or very poorly (36% vs. 17%), and were 10 times as likely to report that their children are doing little or no remote learning (38% vs. 3.7%). And 4 out of 10 of the poorest students are participating in remote learning only once a week or less.
Some 76% of African American and 82% of Hispanic families say they are concerned they don’t have the resources necessary to keep their children on track.

Third, and most heartbreaking, is increased child abuse and neglect.
School shutdowns mean vulnerable children who are in abusive home environments are spending more time where most neglect and abuse occurs, at a time when economic and health stresses have contributed to more abuse and neglect. Those children aren’t coming into contact with the teachers and professionals who are the primary reporters of abuse and neglect.
In 2018, there were 3.5 million children who came into contact with Child Protective Services. About 678,000 were determined to be victims of maltreatment, and 1,770 children died of abuse and neglect. Parents are the perpetrators among 92% of child maltreatment victims; 29% of victims are 2 years of age or younger; and professionals—most significantly educational professionals—are responsible for 67% of all reports of maltreatment. (Friends, neighbors, and family account for only 17% of reports.) That makes school, child care, and other child well-being service closures a recipe for disaster for vulnerable children.

As a report on child welfare and COVID-19 from the Brookings Institution aptly stated:
"COVID-19 has created a perfect storm of factors that will almost certainly lead to a sharp increase in unreported cases of child abuse and neglect, as children are cut off from interactions with professionals and teachers, confined at home with caregivers and relatives, and families are feeling the stress of job loss and economic uncertainty."
"The nation’s system of detecting abuse and neglect, which is heavily dependent on reports by teachers, doctors, and other professionals, is rendered almost completely powerless in this new situation as in-person and face-to-face interactions between children and professionals are being minimized by the stay-at-home orders issued by most states."
"At the same time, other vital parts of the child welfare system—home investigations, child-parent visits, mandatory court appearances, home-based parenting programs—are now at a near standstill, making it harder and harder for the system to ensure the safety and well-being of the nearly 3.5 million children they come into contact with each year. "

COVID-19 is temporary, but many of its impacts will be long-lasting. For children, school closures could have lifelong consequences. It’s not even a close call. The consequences of extended school closures far outweigh the health risks of COVID-19. It’s time to reopen schools in person. The current and future health and well-being of America’s 57 million schoolchildren depends on it.

PRAYER MATTERS:

"To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against
the disorder of the world. -  Karl Barth
"Prayer is inviting God into a seemingly impossible situation and trusting/resting in His love and grace to accomplish His perfect will in His perfect time and for His greatest glory. Intercession is  one of the great privileges AND responsibilities for EVERY believer."- Stan

“INTERCESSORS ARE THE RUDDER” – A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT - Wanda Alger, June 28th, 2017; https://www.getamericapraying.com/blog/I was recently given a word by my good friend, Bill Yount. His word greatly encouraged me as an intercessor. Working for Intercessors for America, I soon realized it was not just a word for me, but for all who have been praying for our nation, wondering if their prayers are truly making any difference. Bill told me, “I kept seeing you as a small rudder on a huge ship. Hidden, but giving guidance. Although it seemed slow it was turning the whole ship. Patience was needed to see the impact of your…ministry. I sense the Lord saying, ‘Don’t jump ship! I’ve made you the rudder!’ ” I was immediately touched in my spirit by this encouragement, knowing that our seemingly small place in prayer was having a great impact.
James 3:4 talks about the power of a small rudder to steer a large ship. In this scripture about the power of our tongue, consider the power of prophetic intercession! In the Forerunner Commentary on this verse we read, “…rudders manipulate the course of immense ocean vessels with a slight movement of a pilot’s hand. Since it is underwater and aft, the rudder of a ship does its work UNSEEN. A passenger is ignorant of its movements most of the time. Yet, when it is in proper working order, the rudder holds more power over the ship than the wind. The wind will blow, toss, even destroy the ship’s rigging, but the rudder guides the ship exactly where it directs.”
This is God’s promise to the intercessors in this hour of national turbulence. Don’t stop praying! Your prayers have great power to turn the ship! Continue praying, interceding, and discerning the workings and movements of the Holy Spirit, being faithful to God’s commands. As we come together to declare God’s faithfulness, this nation will, once again, head in the direction that God intends. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Regardless of the winds of adversity and the fires of the enemy, God’s people have a power that cannot be matched. Let us join in faith and continue to pray and speak of God’s faithfulness in order to bring God’s people and this nation into the fullness of God’s plans. Note this additional encouragement from God’s word:
Colossians 2:15 – “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (ESV).
Psalm 33:8-11 – “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.”

PRAY FOR AMERICA: THANK GOD for His many blessings on America throughout it's history. May we then ask that AMERICA once again be a blessing TO GOD, by once again submitting to HIS will in our affairs - both personal and national - that He may truly "heal our land." (2 Chron. 7:14) Short of that, we should not be saying "God Bless America"but instead "God be merciful towards America!"
PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS:  1) Pray for President Trump and his advisers, that they would select Godly leaders at the federal level who will be accountable to do an excellent job (or be fired!) ; that he would seek God's wisdom and be enabled to lead our country effectively in the years ahead; and 2) Pray our leaders at every level of government will Spirit-filled, leading us with Godly wisdom and integrity; that they will  only pass legislation and enact policies that will benefit Americans today as well as future generations and NOT do any lasting harm.
SUPREME COURT: PRAY that the justices will only hand down decisions that are Constitutionally sound and in the best interests of our country now and for future generations.

World-Wide Prayer Requests:

PRAISE GOD for the continuing recent successes against ISIS! P
ray that coalition forces will be able to  fully destroy the leadership and infrastructure of ISIS.
*For believers in Syria and in this region as they navigate so much uncertainty. May they remain faithful to God through these most difficult times as He sustains them with peace and His Spirit's strength.

STANDING STRONG THROUGH THE STORM - OpenDoorsUSA.org
At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.- 2 Tim. 4:16
SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO SUFFER
The Apostle Paul knew exactly what it was like to be alone, to be deserted by all who called themselves “brothers” and “sisters.” A former colleague who has done considerable travel among the persecuted says, “It is hard to believe that Christians are the largest persecuted group in the world today. But it is even more difficult to believe that this is so seldom mentioned in our gatherings and church services. More Christians know the names of their favorite actors than their fellow believers who are in prison.”
He continues, “With every trip something in my heart breaks as I hear the echoes of suffering:
I remember the echoes of an Egyptian mother as she shared how her young boy was stuck in a haystack because she refused to deny Jesus.
I remember the sounds of weeping as fellow students in Indonesia shared how Sariman, their co-student, was hacked to death.
I remember the cries of anguish as we walked from church to church that was burned to the ground on the island of Lombok.
I remember the tears of Rebecca in Iran as she showed the picture of her father who was stabbed to death for sharing the gospel.
I remember the voice of Pastor Daniel in Vietnam as he shared how he was chained to the ground for six months.
I remember the fear of Grace from Sudan as she shared how her church was attacked and her friend was shot through the head.
Oh, I remember the cries of Caleb in Eritrea as he shared with tears how two dear friends were executed in front of him because of their faith.
And I remember the tears of Joy in the southern Philippines as she shared how her fiancé was shot to death in their church in Mindanao.
But, most all, I remember the deafening sounds of silence every time I return home.
RESPONSE
How can I be silent today? How can I not speak on behalf of those who suffer? How can I desert those that belong to the same body that I belong to and who desperately need the encouragement of my intervention?.

#3078 (7/16) "Adventures in Netflix's Babysitting"

"ADVENTURESS IN NETFLIX'S BABYSITTING" -  Washington Uupdate, July 15, 2020;
https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20200715/adventures-netflix [AS I SEE IT: Awhile back, I was stunned when a co-worker said that when his children come home, he has the older ones just automatically turn on the televisionn to PBS and have the children watch whatever is on.  The ignornance of too many parents to what is not "education" but actually indoctrination whether in the form of pubic television, the Disney channel, or simply public "education" is increasingly the cause of why so many young people today are so accepting of radical ideas and are unskilled in being discerning of all the information  they are bombarded with, so much coming in the form of "entertainment." [How appropriate that the focus of this article is the program with the word"babysitting."] And where do I begin commenting on the colleges - yes, even "Christian" colleges - that parents foot the bill to send their young adults to.  Talk about what's wrong in America! - Stan]
There's an entire generation of moms today who wouldn't think twice about sitting their kids down in front of Netflix new "Babysitters Club" show. And that, experts warn, is exactly the problem. Like so many other women, they're expecting the same innocent storylines they came to love from Ann Martin's books in the 80s and 90s. What they're getting is anything but.

Say goodbye to the regular cast of characters -- and hello to 21st century lesson in transgenderism, sex, dating apps, divorce, and feminism. Mom Elisha Krauss assumed -- like a lot of women her age -- that the show and characters would be just as she remembered them. "I was even happier when the TV-G rating popped up. Sure enough, when I went to my "kids" profile, it was there too! Front, center, and ready to play. I didn't even watch the trailer. I eagerly told our girls -- four under the age of 11 -- that I had read the books as a kid and it was a show about hard-working babysitters who are friends in a cute small town."
Within minutes, Elisha says, her jaw dropped. This wasn't the Stonybrook, Connecticut she knew. This was downtown DNC headquarters, full of leftist propaganda she couldn't believe was rated G! "I wouldn't let these babysitters watch our girls in real life, so why would I let my girls watch them?"

Now, in episode four, the show has taken another disturbing turn -- introducing a nine-year-old boy as a girl named Bailey. "Those are my old clothes," the boy tells Mary Anne in one scene. Confused, Mary Anne seeks out her friend Dawn, who tried to explain: "[I]f someone tried to make you do everything with your left hand, it would be super-weird right? That's how Bailey feels. The same way that you know that you're right-handed, Bailey knows she's a girl... We all want our outsides to match our insides."

Like PBS's "Arthur" and Netflix's other outrageous show loosely based on "Anne of Green Gables," producers seem dead set on turning wholesome, family-friendly stories into a weapon of indoctrination. And they're doing it, FRC's Peter Sprigg points out, under the guise of children's programming. Where Anne is concerned, we're talking about a show set in 1908. "So again, a beloved franchise is now being distorted and perverted to promote a radical 21st Century LGBT agenda."

On "Washington Watch," Sarah Perry seemed as confused as anyone else why these media giants would take such a huge risk. "Well, it's not because this is going to increase their ratings," Peter said. "In fact... I found an article for a few years ago that there were a number of gay-themed TV shows that were either canceled because their ratings were so poor, or they saw a sharp decline in their viewership from the first episode on -- when people realized what the agenda was. So it's clear this is not meeting consumer demand." And yet, as these shows prove, Hollywood is willing to introduce these controversial storylines even at the cost of viewership.

So what can parents do? Sarah, like most moms, heard the title "The Babysitters Club" and assumed it was a completely innocent show. "I would automatically think this was suitable viewing for my kid. Is it strictly a matter of reviewing everything? Watching side by side?" Absolutely, Peter said. "There are resources to help. Organizations like the Parents Television Council and MovieGuide that draw attention to the content of this type of programming." But parents, he warned, can't take anything for granted. "They need to be aware. I think a key lesson is: There is no secular franchise of entertainment that you can assume is safe from this type of agenda... And so parents who are concerned about that just need to realize -- you can't assume that because it's the Disney Channel or because the channel is labeled ABC Family or PBS, that the show is family-friendly."

#3077 (7/15) [New Journal Post!] "America Is Poised to Collapse From Within"

"AMERICA IS POISED TO COLLAPSE FROM WITHIN" - Carol M. Swain / July 08, 2020 / https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/07/08/america-is-poised-to-collapse-from-within/
"Insurrection labeled as 'peaceful protest' is the battering ram weakening our nation’s foundations," Carol M. Swain writes. Pictured: Statues at New York City Hall are seen defaced and painted on June 30 in Manhattan. (Photo: Ira L. Black/Corbis via Getty Images)

Two hundred and forty-four years after the 13 British colonies in North America declared their independence and became a sovereign nation, America is poised to collapse from within. Her imminent demise will not come from foreign troops quartered on her soil. It will come from Marxists and anarchists who use racial grievance and the cries of the oppressed to dismantle America’s institutions and defenses.

Insurrection labeled as “peaceful protest” is the battering ram weakening our nation’s foundations. Using the voices of the oppressed and deceived masses, and their bodies and legitimate grievances as shields, is part of a deliberate plan to bring about a new order guaranteed to be worse than what exists now.

We are at a historical moment where America’s institutions of higher education, many of them founded and led by Christian leaders, have rejected their Founders and become transmission belts for socialism and Marxist propaganda. Using concepts such as “white privilege” and “systemic racism,” these social justice warriors have inverted traditional concepts of equality, justice, and freedom as embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution with its Bill of Rights. These foundational documents provided the institutional mechanisms for positive change that in time came through the passage of ground-breaking civil rights laws and protections—since expanded to include affirmative action designed to address and remedy the effects of past and present discrimination.

More is demanded because America’s enemies understand the heart and soul of its people. The current racial narrative that focuses on “white supremacy” is a distorted narrative aimed at achieving goals that are neither desirable nor attainable. Government cannot fix the individual choices people make that cause some to prosper and others to languish in generational poverty.

The false narratives about America’s racial evils conveniently omit the actions of Christian and Jews who worked tirelessly over the last two-plus centuries to bring about justice for the downtrodden.Jewish and Christian men and women, often working through their congregations, risked everything to fight against the evils of slavery and to empower newly freed slaves and hardworking freedmen. As a result, many of those helped with a hand up went on to establish businesses and attain educations that enabled them to become valued and productive citizens.

The current agitation for defunding police departments on top of demanded reparations ignore basic facts of history. Chaos ensues in the absence of law enforcement, and any monetary benefits from reparations to the descendants of slaves comes on top of the trillions of dollars already spent on programs and scholarships that have helped many blacks to thrive in America.

The current racial narrative uses the oppressor/victim rhetoric to make a new class of victims among white people who are supposed to feel shame because of their race and ancestry. This is being accomplished through the brainwashing of America’s youth and the silencing of white adults who know better.

There is a disregard for the individuality and struggles for millions of white Americans who bear no responsibility either for the sins of their ancestors or the choices of other groups. As a nation we best return to the pursuit of life, liberty, and justice as core principles and non-negotiable human rights. We are at a moment where our nation is at the mercy of domestic extortionists. They have usurped power from impotent leaders no longer willing to fight for principles higher than themselves. Love of God and country have yielded to love of self.

All this has left our nation teetering on the edge of a precipice. I believe we have a small window of time to reclaim our core values and principles. Reclaiming what made America unique among nations will require educating young and old about national history and its Judeo-Christian roots. It will also require civic knowledge and a return to patriotism. It is the American national identity that will hold us together, not the divisive tribalism fostered by identity politics.

If we are to survive this moment of massive unrest, men and women of goodwill must step up to build on what our nation’s Founders left behind. Building will require a rediscovery of our founding documents and the biblical principles that emphasize loving one’s neighbor as one’s self. The Golden Rule to do unto others as you would have them do unto you applies.

Our greatest universal strength lies in our written Constitution, which provides the basis for the rule of law. It is time for our leaders of all races to defend the document that has stood the test of time. Under our system of government, the power rests in the hands of the people. It is “We the People” addressed in the preamble of our great Constitution who must stand up; it is “Be the People” who will reclaim their nation and its Judeo-Christian heritage and what that has meant to the world.

#3076 (7/14) "Cancellation Nation: The Building Backlash" -

"CANCELLATION NATION: THE BUILDING BACKLASH" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, July 13, 2020; https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA20G15&f=WU20G07
First it was pancake syrup and Paw Patrol. Now, even Scrabble isn't safe. You can forget the triple word score on at least 236 "slurs" the North American players association is stripping from the group's lexicon. The goal, these gamers say, is to make the game "friendlier" for all types of people. Of course, no one has seen the official list of "potentially offensive" words -- leaving many to wonder if this new vocabulary is just W-O-K-E.

George Orwell used to say that if you control the language, you control the people. And the fringe has certainly taken that advice to heart, putting a bullseye on phrases as pedestrian as "peanut gallery," "no can do" and the ever-inflammatory "eenie meenie miney moe." A grammarian, writing for the Philadelphia Inquirer, argued that all of these phrases are linguistic bigotry and should be blacklisted. (Actually, he didn't use that word, since it's almost certainly offensive too.) The point, NRO's David Harsanyi warns, is that "attempting to dictate what words we use is another way to exert power over how we think."

But is it working? New polling says no. If anything, a growing number of Americans -- including an impressive number of prominent liberals -- think the cancel culture has worn out its welcome. In an astonishing turn, 153 of them, including well-known authors, intellectuals, and public figures, signed on to an open letter in Harper's magazine, calling for an end to the "public shaming and ostracism" and a new tolerance for "opposing views."
"The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted... [There is a new] tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty. We uphold the value of robust and even caustic counter-speech from all quarters. But it is now all too common to hear calls for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought... [This] stifling atmosphere... invariably hurts those who lack power and makes everyone less capable of democratic participation."

Signed by a collection of people who no one would mistake for conservatives, the mainstream pushback was just one of the signs that the honeymoon with the mob is over. Even more telling is the surprising shift of public opinion away from groups like Black Lives Matter -- which, 70 percent of Americans insist -- isn't improving race relations. In fact, many believe the movement has done more harm (38 percent) than good (26 percent). That decline in public approval has been especially steep over the last month, as more Americans realize George Floyd's death was just an excuse for radicals to hijack the conversation. "Some 40 percent of Republicans in early June thought the 'underlying anger of the protesters' was fully justified after the killing of Floyd," Liz Peek explains. "Later in the month, only 18 percent thought so."

The woke crowd is on shaky ground, Mark Hemingway agrees. Friday, on "Washington Watch" with Sarah Perry, he warned that a lot more people in this country care about free speech than the media would like to admit. "And they're getting frustrated," he said, pointing to the open rebellion of letters like Harper's. If you want to blame someone for this unrest, Mark insisted, try academia. It's our colleges and universities who created this chaos by allowing certain Marxist theories to take hold of U.S. campuses.
"In the last 20 years, it's reached critical mass," he pointed out. So much so that "the point of education [is now] to rectify injustice and to create activists, not to impart knowledge. And I definitely think that that has taken hold among younger people that haven't really even, frankly, been that well educated on competing ideas regarding basic things like free speech or free enterprise. And that's a problem. They've been taught that [only] one set of ideas only is correct."

If we want to save our country and stop these forces from remaking America, then we've got to reassess education. Obviously, Mark points out, public schools and universities aren't going away any time soon. "But I think people care about their kids learning some basic ideas that have made Western civilization, such a belief in absolute and transcendent truth. The belief that the way to be prosperous and happy is to engage in the free exchange of ideas... And I think if you can inculcate that in a future generation, or -- at the very least -- create enough of a sizable group of people that exists outside of this current dominant thinking, in 10 or 20 years then you might have something."

We've seen the homeschooling movement start to drive that counterculture, along with uncompromising Christian colleges, parents, and churches. It will take all of them to undo what the far-Left have done to the one thing we should all have in common: freedom.

#3075 (7/13) "Rushmore and the Two-Faced Left"

"RUSHMORE AND THE TWO-FACED LEFT" - Tony Perkins, Washington Update, July 7, 2020; https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA20G06&f=WU20G04 [AS I SEE IT: It will go down in history as the greatest speech extolling America that was little heard by Americans. That the media was able - for the most part -  to shut down the things the President said that would reveal how biased they really are - is a sad commentary on the times we live in. - Stan]
Given by any other man, it would have been considered one of the greatest speeches of our time. A triumph of American exceptionalism. But it was not any other man standing under the granite faces of Mount Rushmore on the night before July 4th. It was Donald Trump. So however inspired his words may have been, however sincere his call to remember the deep well of American goodness, however different his message might have been from all the others the media loves to criticize, he was never going to get a fair shake. The president's detractors stopped listening a long time ago, missing the moment they would have realized this nation had been waiting for.

What happened  Friday night [7/3], under the red, white, and blue bunting of a Fourth of July weekend, was defining -- not just for this president, but for a hurting country. The scars of 2020 already run deep, with the last several weeks splitting wider old wounds. For most of us, it's a time of uncertainty we've never experienced, a fear for our nation that's never felt more real. It was with that backdrop that President Trump flew to South Dakota and spoke from the heart. He reminded us about the miraculous story of America, about the men and women of every race who bled and fought to make us the brightest light the world had ever seen. "No nation," he said, "has done more to advance the human condition than the United States of America, and no people have done more to promote human progress than the citizens of our great nation."

There are so many great chapters of adventure, innovation, and courage waiting to be written, Trump wanted the country to know. But the other side isn't interested. They don't want to teach children to love their country, honor their history, and grab on to opportunity. They want to erase our history, he warned. But "their goal is not a better America. Their goal is to end America." Undermining, the president explained, the very cause they claim to represent -- the cause of abolitionists, of Martin Luther King, Jr., of civil rights visionaries the world over.

Passionate at times, eloquent at others, it was the speech of a man who realized it wasn't just his presidency at stake -- but his country. And yet, the same hypocritical voices who demand the very leadership President Trump displayed eviscerated him for it afterward. "Dark," "divisive," "traitorous," and "combative," the media's reaction was full of this ridiculous insistence that patriotism isn't just partisan -- it's racist. "It would be difficult to get a more textbook expression of the American civic religion than the speech at Rushmore," NRO's Rich Lowry declared, "...or a more affirming account of the greatness of America and its meaning to the world. And, yet, the speech was tested and found wanting."

Meanwhile, no one is quite sure what the mob's solution to this crisis is (if they seek a solution at all). Their idea of justice divides. Their idea of equality silences. If we can't unite around our common identity as Americans, what is there? And maybe for angry liberals, that's the point. "Divisive?" the editors of the Wall Street Journal wrote in astonishment. "Mr. Trump's speech was certainly direct, in his typical style. But it was only divisive if you haven't been paying attention to the divisions now being stoked on the political left across American institutions."
Never before, Lowry insisted, "has a speech extolling America's virtues and the marvels or the nation's heroes played to such poor -- and completely dishonest -- reviews." You can say a lot of things, he argued, "that the speech was insincere, or that Trump's tweets matter more than anything he reads from a Teleprompter... but you can't say it was racially divisive." What it was, Rich wrote, was a celebration of America's "Founders, its ideals and freedom, its capacity for self-renewal, its astonishing variety of geniuses, adventurers, warriors, inventors, and great musicians and athletes." If that's an expression of "white supremacy," Rich worries, then America is on dangerous ground.

And yet, the Left is so desperate to cancel President Trump that Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) couldn't even get Democrats to pass a simple resolution condemning mob violence as the Senate left town last week. "[My proposal] was designed to be unifying. It avoided controversial subjects [and encouraged] basic dignity and civil respect. And apparently that's too much to ask for today's Democratic Party." The only way they would consider it, he said on Monday's "Washington Watch," is if he inserted language blaming the president for creating this chaos. "I said, 'Look, I'll take the rest of [your] language, but... I'm not going to let you turn this into an anti-Trump rant..." And because of that, it failed.
This whole climate, Mike shook his head, "is not good for us as humans. It's not good for our souls." Civility, he urged, "ultimately centers on Jesus Christ's teachings of love and respect. We can disagree with someone without being disagreeable. We can disagree with them even passionately while still loving them and treating them with decency and respect." Let's face it, he said, "This is the greatest civilization the world has ever known. And we're great not because of who we are, but because of what we do, because we've chosen to be good and kind to each other."

There are forces in this country who want to take that choice away. To make hate the only language Americans speak. We cannot let them. The time has come to rise up and defend what 244 years of freedom have already won -- if not out of respect for the generations who came before us, then out of concern for the ones who come after.

#3074 (7/12) SUNDAY SPECIAL: "Pastor or Parrot? - Lessons from the Coronavirus Pt. 11"

"PASTOR OR PARROT? - LESSONS FROM THE CORNAVIRUS PT. II" - John Stonestreet and Maria Baer, Breakpoint.org, 07/7/20; https://www.breakpoint.org/pastor-or-parrot/
Pastoring is always a difficult job. I can’t think of another job, in fact, in which someone is hired to do one thing (typically, lead and disciple God’s people) but evaluated on a completely different thing (namely, growing the audience and the budget).

Pastoring during coronavirus seems even more unenviable. Zoom stock might be way up as the new preferred platform for corporations and schools, but there is no digital substitute for the sort of face-to-face work pastoring requires. When to close down was a tough decision. When to reopen is even more difficult. If pastors choose to strictly adhere to state guidelines, they will upset people. If they ignore or relax those guidelines, they upset others. In almost every church I know of, pastors face a no-win proposition right now.

In addition to navigating a global pandemic, pastors must also deal with our already intense and only intensifying cultural firestorms. While we all must navigate the issues of race, sexuality & gender, criminal justice, political divisions, and other markers of our fallen human nature that dominate this cultural moment, pastors face expectations that many of us don’t. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this phrase on social media recently: “If your pastor doesn’t preach about X from the pulpit this Sunday, it’s time to find a new church.” Same phrase, but the X changes with the headlines.

Don’t get me wrong. As the true account of the human condition, the Bible has this quality of universal relevance. Pastors should make the connection between the timeless truths of Scripture and our particular context, both in their preaching and in their leading. There are times that to not address something from the pulpit is to be louder than addressing it, and churches that never address controversial issues risk giving their people the impression that the Bible is our own personal, private collection of encouragements rather than the personal, public and true account of the human condition.

At the same time, the loud demands placed today on pastors to not only hold but to articulate our approved opinions reveals more about us than about our pastors. After all, if we are confident our pastor is called by God and entrusted by Him to lead us into His Word and His will, that leaves little room for making demands on what he teaches. Also, our loud demands that a pastor “talk about subject X,” almost always means “say specifically what I want him to say about subject X.” But that also means we’re not really looking for a pastor or a teacher anymore. We’re looking for a parrot.

The demands pastors face can range from mountains to molehills, but, in too many cases, they are treated the same. To bring up the most common elephant in the sanctuary today, everyone has strong feelings about masks. I do too. But being asked to wear a mask in church by pastors seeking to comply with civic authorities or protect the health of parishioners is not a matter of orthodoxy. This is not a sufficient cause of outrage or of making demands for our pastor’s compliance. And it’s certainly not worth leaving a church over.

Keep in mind that pastors are called to shepherd specific congregations. Though the big cultural issues are always relevant, each community and each congregation find themselves in a specific time and place (as Paul told the Athenians) with specific people and circumstances all orchestrated by God. For example, a church connected to an addiction recovery center, as is the home church of a colleague, will be made of people with specific needs and challenges that others may not have.

What is really at stake here is that we all need to foster a proper ecclesiology, (that’s a $.50 word for the doctrine of the church). When we view church like we do so much of 21st-century Western life, as consumers, we’ll see church as a place to be entertained or affirmed, in our feelings and in our views. That, rather than a fidelity to Christ and His Gospel, is what’s driving so much of the entitlement we feel, and pastors face.

Every church and every Christian, of course, ought expect and demand that pastors preach the true Word of God with passion and courage. We ought never allow a pastor to abuse his power or his position in exploiting the congregation. Still, we ought never demand that our pastor never disagree with us. The holy willingness of a pastor to say what’s true is only matched by the holy willingness of Christ followers to hear what we may not like. And again, don’t leave a church over a mask.
