PRAISES AND PRAYER REQUESTS:

PRAISE! - "North Carolina Governor Signs New Pro-Life Legislation into Law"- 7/30/2013 http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/Prayerwatch?pw=1706

North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed pro-life legislation into law late Monday requiring abortion clinics to comply with basic medical standards used in outpatient surgical clinics...Court action is certain to follow challenging the law. Considering abortion is a surgical procedure, holding abortion clinics to the same standards as surgical clinics is nothing extreme. Not to mention, nearly half of the states in the country now have this requirement. On the national level, Florida Senator Marco Rubio is preparing to introduce legislation in the U.S. Senate limiting abortions to five months of pregnancy.
(Sources: New York Times, TownHall) As the Lord leads, please pray:
  • For the courage and integrity of more state legislatures to take pro-life positions.
  • About the sanctity of life issues in America.
  • For the national legislative attempts that will be introduced by Senator Marco Rubio.
ATTENTION: TODAY is the 23rd day of the 30 days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. (see link below for resource material you can download.) Please join me in focusing your prayers EVERY DAY for these over one billion people who need to hear the gospel of Jesus.[NOTE: 1) You can download a  page of helpful basic information about Islam and Ramadan at: http://www.opendoorsusa.org/downloads/pdf-downloads/Islam_reference_guide-1.pdf ; and 2) The following is from a 30-day prayer guide you can download at: http://www.opendoorsusa.org/downloads/pdf-downloads/2013-ramadan-prayer-calendar-1.pdf (The following is from that prayer guide. July 31 – 23rd Day of Ramadam - -  MESSIAH (Turkmenistan)  “… anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.”  (Mark 9:41) Exerting strict control in order to avoid the emergence of any independent economic, social or cultural groups, the government uses the ‘Council on Religious Affairs,’ police and the secret services, to keep the church under surveillance. Religious education and publications are almost totally banned; all unregistered religious activity is illegal. Pray today for believers in Turkmenistan to have the freedom to openly worship Christ, drawing many to Jesus, the Messiah.

"Angry Islamists Turn Wrath on Egypt's Christians,"  By George Thomas, CBN News Sr. Reporter http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2013/July/Angry-Islamists-Turn-Wrath-on-Egypts-Christians/  Friday, July 12, 201 - "Egyptian Christians are facing growing retaliation by angry Islamists for opposing ousted President Moham3med Morsi. His supporters say Christian leaders were behind his removal from office....On Thursday, the body of a Christian merchant was found decapitated in a cemetery. Last Saturday, a Coptic Christian priest was shot by gunmen in an outdoor market. Also, days after the military coup that removed Morsi from office, Muslim extremists in southern Egypt burned dozens of Christian homes and stabbed four believers to death. "American Pastor Saeed: 300 Illegal Days in an Iranian Prison,"  - by Jordan Sekulow, July 23, 2013 http://aclj.org/iran/american-pastor-saeed-300-illegal-days-iranian-prison
''Today [7/23] is the 300th day of American Pastor Saeed Abedini’s illegal imprisonment in Iran – 300 days away from his wife and kids, 300 days of torment for his Christian faith, 300 days and counting...Pastor Saeed’s wife, Naghmeh Abedini, responded to this positive step:"Thank you to all of the individuals who have prayed, written letters, signed petitions, called government officials, run benefit races, tweeted, and shared Saeed’s story. Thank you to all the government officials from around the world who have stood for my husband.  Iran has listened to your pleas.  While I am encouraged that Saeed is finally getting medical care, the fight is not yet over.  It has been a difficult 300 days – 300 days of torment simply because Saeed loves Jesus Christ.  I am hopeful Iran will do the just and honorable thing and release Saeed.'' ...We continue to work in this country and in the international community to secure Pastor Saeed’s freedom.  And more than 600,000 people around the world now stand in solidarity with Pastor Saeed at SaveSaeed.org. [ I urge you to pray DAILY for this courageous brother in Christ and his family and the hundreds of thousands of other Christians worldwide suffering persecution for their faith. - Stan]

"Open Season on Christians after Pro-Gay Rulings," - By Paul Strand, July 29, 2013
http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2013/July/Open-Season-on-Christians-after-Pro-Gay-Rulings/

WASHINGTON - Christians who speak out and stand up for traditional marriage are more likely than ever to be persecuted and even prosecuted for it.That's because of how the majority at the U.S. Supreme Court wrote their June 26 pro-gay marriage rulings.

The high court majority attacked the motives of those who came up with the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996. DOMA enshrined traditional marriage in federal law and prevented federal benefits from going to same-sex couples."The avowed purpose and  practical effect of the law here in question are to impose a disadvantage, a separate status, and so a stigma upon all who enter into same-sex marriages," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the United States v. Windsor ruling. "DOMA writes inequality into the entire United States Code," he added.

According to Ken Klukowski, director of the Center for Religious Liberty, the rationale for this ruling basically undermined the motive of those for traditional marriage only."The Court said that the federal Defense of Marriage Act is literally irrational, that it was just the fruit of bigotry and beknighted souls rather than the thoughtful actions of elected, national leaders," he said.Rep. Gerald Nadler, D-N.Y., agreed with Justice Kennedy, summing up the majority's judgment of DOMA as being "motivated by animus." "Animus means hatred and discrimination," the New York lawmaker said. "It says there was no conceivable legitimate purpose of the law."

DOMA passed in Congress with huge majorities, but Klukowski said the high court has now decided "that 85 percent of Congress in passing it and Democratic President Bill Clinton signing it into law were not motivated by any sound reason, by any rational thought whatsoever, that they were motivated either by ignorance or by hostility."

Stage Set for Persecution? - Such talk by the nation's highest court will likely propel pro-homosexual rights groups and pro-gay government officials to go after backers of traditional marriage harder than ever. "There's absolutely a growing threat under this administration and under this court," Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, told CBN News. "I think what Justice Kennedy did in his opinion was basically assign a false motive to those who are opposed to the redefinition of natural marriage, acting as if they were a threat to people, therefore declaring open season," Perkins stated.

"And I think you will see open hostility, increasing open hostility," he predicted. "I mean, we've seen very recent gay pride events where there were Christians beaten because they took a stand for biblical morality." Thomas Peters, communications director for the National Organization for Marriage, says up until now, action against traditional marriage backers has mostly come at the state level, and cases have been piling up in recent years.

Peters listed some. - "The Colorado baker who right now could spend a year in jail for refusing to give a wedding cake to a gay ceremony, or the town clerks in New York who had to resign their jobs because they simply asked that someone else in the office would sign the same-sex marriage licenses so that they wouldn't have to do it," he said. "Or the wedding photographer in New Mexico who's been fined thousands of dollars simply for saying she didn't want to photograph a gay ceremony," he continued.

There's likely to be much more of this kind of legal action if America's neighbor to the north can serve as an example. Same-sex marriage came to Canada in 2005. In a recent five-year period there, 200 to 300 cases against opponents of gay marriage were brought before courts, human rights commissions, and employment boards .Now, Perkins expects a steep rise in cases across the United States and he said that's going to have a major impact on America."This is about fundamentally altering the American society," Perkins stated, "loss of religious freedom, loss of parental rights, employers - bakers, photographers, florists - being forced to participate by threat of law in same-sex marriages."

Florist Refuses Gay Couple - One such florist in Washington state has made national news. In March, Barronelle Stutzman refused to supply the flowers for the gay wedding of longtime customers Curt Freed and Robert Ingersoll because of her Christian beliefs.Freed and Ingersoll weren't going to take any legal actions, but Washington's state attorney general went after Stutzman anyway.

Peters summed up Stutzman's case. - "She said, 'I will happily serve you as individuals, but I don't believe in gay weddings, so I'm not going to do your wedding ceremony,'" he said. "The attorney general and the ACLU colluded to sue her with civil and criminal penalties. This is just a gross overreach of power."

In state after state that's voted to legalize gay marriage, religious opponents have been promised they wouldn't face legal action because of their opposition. But Peters said of the legal action against Stutzman, "It's exactly what the same officials promised would never, ever happen if you redefined marriage. We saw only a few months later those promises meant nothing."

Gay Activists: Passivity = Bigotry - Peters and Perkins point out these days the most active of gay rights activists demand affirmation from everyone in society. And these activists suggest it's anti-gay to do anything less than show full support for them. Standing outside the U.S. Supreme Court after its pro-gay marriage rulings in June, Chad Griffin, with the leading homosexual rights group the Human Rights Campaign, stated, "At this moment, apathy and passivity are no better than bigotry."

For instance, an email went to Department of Justice managers this spring saying they should display a gay pride symbol in their office. It instructed when it comes to gays, "Don't judge or remain silent. Silence will be interpreted as disapproval."

Many worry what will happen to federal workers who believe homosexuality is unbiblical. Some military members have already run into trouble. Retired Col. Ron Crews, a former chaplain, told CBN News of two Christians having Bible study in their Post Exchange food court, reading Romans 1 - a chapter that condemns homosexual behavior."Two tables over, a soldier heard them, came up to them and started cursing at them for talking 'about him,'" Crews said. "And then called an MP over, wanted to reprimand them for talking 'about him,' while all they were doing was reading Scripture."

However, less than 300,000 of the 1.9 million population are Qatari nationals. Almost all foreign residents are migrant laborers. With long days and soaring temperatures in this desert nation, Ramadan can be a difficult time for Christians; expected to participate in fasting from sunrise to sunset, many struggle with the decision to comply. Today, ask Jesus to help them live out their Christian faith during Ramadan.

Korean War Memorial [1]

"Paying Homage to the Brave Men and Women of Korean War," - by Bruce Klingner, July 27, 2013 [NOTE - It has been reported that about 22 veterans commit suicide in America EACH DAY! That is almost one every hour of every day; that's 660 a month! Join me in praying that veterans who are in such emotional turmoil that they consider suicide would have someone in their circle of family and friends to share the hope and peace of Christ. Pray that such deception by Satan of those who have given so much for our country will be countered by the working of God's Spirit. - Stan]

Sixty years ago today, the armistice was signed to end the brutal three-year war that had devastated the Korean Peninsula. North Korea’s invasion in June 1950 made all too clear the true nature of the regime — its willingness to blatantly violate international agreements, its eagerness to use military attacks to achieve political objectives, and its utter disregard for the lives of Korean citizens.

Leaders and citizens of the United States and the Republic of Korea rightly pay homage to the brave men and women of our armed forces for their defense of Korea and perseverance at times when it must have seemed that even hope had died. We humbly honor their service and remember that far too many brave young souls paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our shared values of freedom, democracy, and human rights.

That tragic conflict has been referred to as “The Forgotten War.” It is an unfitting label since it will never be forgotten by the people of the Republic of Korea. Nor will that shared ordeal ever be forgotten by those Americans who treasure freedom and the willingness to bravely and resolutely fight for it against even seemingly insurmountable odds.

During her May 2013 trip to Washington, President Park Geun-hye visited the Korean War Memorial. There she expressed on behalf of her nation “our profound gratitude to America’s veterans. Their blood, sweat and tears helped safeguard freedom and democracy.” President Park commented how moved she was by the words etched in granite at the memorial: “Our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.” At a dinner celebrating the alliance, Park honored U.S. veterans, speaking eloquently of how “freedom is not free … peace is not free.”

It has been said that the U.S.–Korean alliance has been “forged in blood.” That is surely true, because the true mettle of an enduring alliance — of a partnership, of a friendship — such as that between our two countries, can only come when we have shared not only the best of times, but also of the worst of times. The U.S. and South Korea stood together during that ordeal and in the subsequent 60 years. This alliance forged in blood has been tempered by repeated crisis. The events of June 1950 are not merely a distant historical event.

As Pyongyang’s heinous attacks on the South Korean naval ship Cheonan and Yeonpyeong Island in 2010 — and all of its other acts of terror and aggression over the years — make all too clear, the need for vigilance has not diminished. Every day, the Korean Peninsula remains in the shadow of conflict and always on the knife edge of crisis.

Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12) Christianity has existed in Libya since New Testament times. With the emergence of Islam, the church was almost obliterated by the 12th century. Following the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gadhafi’s  dictatorial regime, there has been political instability and growing support for militant Islam. With 97% of the population Sunni Muslim, the Christian community is facing uncertain times. Pray for them today, especially during Ramadan, for the Light of Christ, dwelling within them, to pierce Libya’s spiritual darkness.

"Is This Still America?" -  By Thomas Sowell, Jewish World Review July 16, 2013/
http://jewishworldreview.com/cols/sowell071613.php3#.UfRoQtKTgl8  [NOTE: This is written by an African-American who obviously can see what happened apart from any question of race.]

There are no winners in the trial of George Zimmerman. The only question is whether the damage that has been done has been transient or irreparable.

Legally speaking, Zimmerman has won his freedom. But he can still be sued in a civil case, and he will probably never be safe to live his life in peace, as he could have before this case made him the focus of national attention and orchestrated hate. More important than the fate of George Zimmerman, however, is the fate of the American justice system and of the public's faith in that system and in their country. People who have increasingly asked, during the lawlessness of the Obama administration, "Is this still America?" may feel some measure of relief.

But the very fact that this case was brought in the first place, in an absence of serious evidence — which became ever more painfully obvious as the prosecution strained to try to come up with anything worthy of a murder trial — will be of limited encouragement as to how long this will remain America. The political perversion of the criminal justice system began early and at the top, with the President of the United States. Unlike other public officials who decline to comment on criminal cases that have not yet been tried in court, Barack Obama chose to say, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon." It was a clever way to play the race card, as he had done before, when Professor Henry Louis Gates of Harvard was arrested.

But it did not stop there. After the local police in Florida found insufficient evidence to ask for Zimmerman to be prosecuted, the Obama administration sent Justice Department investigators to Sanford, Florida, and also used the taxpayers' money to finance local activists who agitated for Zimmerman to be arrested. Political intervention did not end with the federal government. The city manager in Sanford intervened to prevent the usual police procedures from being followed.

When the question arose of identifying the voice of whoever was calling for help during the confrontation between Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman, the normal police procedure would have been to let individuals hear the recording separately, rather than have a whole family hear it together. If you want to get each individual's honest opinion, you don't want that opinion to be influenced by others who are present, much less allow a group to coordinate what they are going to say. When the city manager took this out of the hands of the police, and had Trayvon Martin's family, plus Rachel Jeantel, all hear the recording together, that's politics, not law.

This was just one of the ways that this case looked like something out of "Alice in Wonderland." Both in the courtroom and in the media, educated and apparently intelligent people repeatedly said things that they seemed sincerely, and even fervently, to believe, but which were unprovable and often even unknowable. In addition, the testimony of prosecution witness after prosecution witness undermined the prosecution's own case. Some critics faulted the prosecuting attorneys. But the prosecutors had to work with what they had — and they had no hard evidence that would back up a murder charge or even a manslaughter charge. You don't send people to prison on the basis of what other people imagine, or on the basis of media sound bites like "shooting an unarmed child," when that "child" was beating him bloody.

The jury indicated, early on as their deliberations began, that they wanted to compare hard evidence, when they asked for a complete list of the testimony on both sides. Once the issue boiled down to hard, provable facts, the prosecutors' loud histrionic assertions and sweeping innuendoes were just not going to cut it. Nor was repeatedly calling Zimmerman a liar effective, especially when the prosecution misquoted what Zimmerman said, as an examination of the record would show.

The only real heroes in this trial were the jurors. They showed that this is still America — at least for now — despite politicians who try to cheapen or corrupt the law, as if this were some banana republic. Some are already calling for a federal indictment of George Zimmerman, after he has been acquitted.

Will this still be America then?

- Stan]

"More than 1,400 Kids Gather in Desert to Pray," CBNNews.com,  July 26, 2013  http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2013/July/More-than-1400-Kids-Gather-in-Desert-to-Pray/ [AS I SEE IT - Yes, this is a story about children in Egypt, whose country faces desperate times. If but America's youth realized how desperate a time it is for their country, maybe they could be so bold and intercede for it. We can only PRAY that would be so. Maybe They just need to see adult Christians doing so. - Stan]

More than 1,400 children gathered in the Egyptian desert recently asking God to change them and their nation. Some called it a sign of hope for Egypt's future. The first ever One Thing Kids Festival was held at Wadi El Natroun from July 16-18, and was broadcasted live by Sat-7, SAT-7 Kids, and SA-T Arabic channel. The event was held in a historic desert center for Christian prayer. Egyptian children as young as eight attended, leading worship and prayer.

"Our vision is to have this generation praying and worshipping God, and to be filled with the Holy Spirit to be able to change the world," Kasr El Doubara Evangelical Church (KDEC), festival organizers said, according to Inspire Magazine in the UK.

Festival organizers said God will bless Egypt because of the faithful intercession of its children.

"On Fire for God: Public School Bible Clubs Spread," by Paul Strand, July 26, 2013   http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2013/May/On-Fire-for-God-Public-School-Bible-Clubs-Spread/ [AS I SEE IT - If I could speak to EVERY teen EVERYWHERE, one of my heart challenges would be to see themselves as not just as students in school to get an education but as STUDENT-MSSIONARIES who are sovereignly called to their particular school by God to make an impact on the lives of their fellow students. Beginning with interceeding in prayer for all within their sphere of influence (including teachers and administrators and other school workers), they must ask God to help them leave behind when they graduate A LEGACY OF CHANGED LIVES. Going to school each day should be an adventure for every Christian student, to see just what God would want to do through their lives to make a difference in the lives of others. - Stan]

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- New Bethlehem is a little town as quiet as the burbling Redbank waters flowing close by. It's hardly the kind of place you'd expect to hold the largest group of any kind, much less one that's influencing the world. But don't tell that to the kids going to the public high school here.

Each Monday in the middle of the school day more than half of Redbank Valley High School's 600 students head to Bible Club, making it the largest of its kind in the world. They put on an annual Open House that showcases their wild skits, zany antics and boisterous worship that make Bible Club so fun. It's attracted up to a thousand people at once. These students carry their Bibles in the hallways, openly share the Gospel, and now they're inspiring kids around the country and beyond.

The Difference an Email Makes - CBN News first covered Redbank's club two years ago after a viewer sent an email about its success. "You made that video clip and we've got all kinds of responses from that," Bible Club President Doug Gundlach told CBN News. He said the CBN News story kicked off a cavalcade of inquiries and invitations. "That has sparked interest all over the world really," he said. Club members even had to elect their own public relations officer, Maggie McCauley, to handle it all.

"A lot of things have happened," McCauley said.  "We've had a lot of outreach projects, as well as people contacting us to see how things are done." A major spark came from McCauley's CBN News testimony of being just 14 years old at a Bible Club meeting where she led some four dozen students to pray for salvation. Two years later, she remarked that it might have been even more."I'm sitting there counting and I'm saying 'Oh my gosh, I can't believe it: 48 kids!' And there could have been more, but I had to quit counting so I could pray," McCauley  said.

A Miracle Connection - Treasurer Alaina Kunselmen believes the CBN News story led to a miracle connection. "After we were on 'The 700 Club' last time, a club from California, Rosamond High School -- they're a Bible Club -- they got in touch with us, said they saw our interview -- which was really cool, I thought. I mean, they're all the way across the country," Kunselmen said.

The Rosamond students shared that they needed exactly 25 Bibles and that's exactly what the Redbank students prayed for. "And not even a week later, someone dropped off 25 Bibles in our office, which was the exact number of Bibles that they needed,"  Kunselmen said. The donor had no idea he was fulfilling to a tee the prayer for 25 Bibles. Kunselmen recalled, "They were just laying around his office, he said."
Kunselmen keeps the thank you card signed by a couple of dozen grateful Rosamond students who received the Bibles."I mean, that's definitely a God thing,"  she said.  "Like there's no other explanation for that.  We didn't have any other Bibles donated ever.  And a couple of days after we pray for them, we get some."

After hearing about Redbank's Bible Club, Travis Deans of Teens for Christ began to spread the word. Standing outside Redbank Valley High, Deans told CBN News, "Part of my excitement is to share what's happening here with other clubs, just to say 'Look what God could do in your school.'"

'Your School's a Mission Trip' - Deans shared the story on his website 9monthmissiontrip.com, which is aimed right at kids in school. "We want to challenge students, especially Christian students, to think of their school as a mission trip, that God has put them there for a purpose and a reason," Deans explained. "And God wants to use them to share His love with their friends."

A ministry that wants to aid in setting up a network of 30 or 40 Bible Clubs throughout New York City schools sent observers to Redbank."They wanted to organize a Bible Club that would bring in kids from all five boroughs in New York City," McCauley said, "and they came to us for help."

And the Redbankers have become missionaries in their own way."We went to a youth convention in Denver and we did a program there," Gundlach said.McCauley added, "And we had a session called 'How to Start a Bible Club in Your High School.'" The club's advisor, teacher Joe Harmon, evangelizes for the Bible Club's methods as well on his website School Bible Club and traveling to other Pennsylvania towns, like Curwensville, when asked.

That's where Grampian Church of God Pastor Leslie Bloom lives. She's a friend of Harmon's and knew the youth in her church were keen to start up their own Bible Club at their high school. "Our kids have such big hearts for other teenagers and they kind of want to pull them in and show them what it's all about with Jesus," Pastor Bloom told CBN News.  "So I asked Joe to come down to the youth group to speak to them.  And some of our other youth leaders were there, and it just set the kids on fire."

On Fire for God

That's what the Redbankers want to do everywhere: set students on fire for God and let them know it's completely constitutional to live out their faith anywhere, including their school.

"There's no law that says kids can't carry a Bible in school, read it in school, pray in school," Maggie explained.  "There's nothing like that."

Deans said kids have every reason to be proud of their God and talk about Him.

"Let's face it," he said. "God is cool.  I mean, God is awesome."

Many Americans may think the U.S. Supreme Court threw prayer and the Bible out of public schools in the 1960s.  But the Bible Club kids at Redbank Valley High are showing their nation students can have as much prayer, Bible and God in their schools as they want.

"Orlando, Florida House of Horrors Abortion Clinic Reopens After Police Raid," by Steven Ertelt | Orlando, FL | LifeNews.com | 7/22/13; http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/22/orlando-florida-house-of-horrors-abortion-clinic-reopens-after-police-raid/

An Orlando, Florida abortion clinic that was closed weeks ago after police raided the facility has reopened and will do abortions seven days a week.
Police in June shut down a late-term abortion clinic in Orlando, Florida and seized and removed property from the building as a helpless abortion practitioner could only stand by and watch. James Scott Prendergraft, whose medical license has been suspended a fifth time, stood in the background as police and other officials taped off his abortion clinic with crime tape and locked him out of the building.
In 2011, Pendergraft was hit with a whopping civil medical malpractice judgment of $36,737,660.16 in compensatory and punitive damages in a case involving a botched 20 week abortion that resulted in the live birth of a child physically damaged by Pendergraft’s incompetent abortion process amid what was described as “third world conditions” with virtually no counseling. He has refused to pay the judgment....

"Last Abortion Facility in Green Bay Wisconsin Stops Doing Abortions,"  by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 7/25/13 http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/25/last-abortion-facility-in-green-bay-wisconsin-stops-doing-them/

The only facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin that does abortions is no longer going to be doing abortions. The Ob-Gyn Associates clinic on Webster Avenue on the city’s east side near the Bellin Hospital in the Medical Arts Building was doing abortions but a local news report indicates they are ceasing.
For decades, protesters have walked the sidewalks around the Medical Arts Building on Webster Avenue. Their vigils and prayers have always been for abortions performed inside the building would come to an end. “Our prayers have been answered if indeed that’s the case,” said anti-abortion activist Jim Ball....
This news of the stoppage of abortions in Green Bay comes after the Planned Parenthood abortion business shut down one clinic in Appleton and ended abortions at its Green Bay clinic in response to the ultrasound bill Governor Scott Walker signed. Governor Scott Walker signed Senate Bill 206 (Sonya’s Law) into law.  This important new law requires that women seeking abortions in Wisconsin be given the opportunity to see their unborn children through ultrasound. Just hours before Walker signed the law, the Planned Parenthood abortion business announced it would file a lawsuit seeking to stop women from seeing these ultrasounds. A judge has put the law on hold while the case continues.
“We thank Governor Walker for signing this important piece of legislation into law,” said Wisconsin Right to Life legislative director Armacost. “Sonya’s Law will empower women to make truly informed decisions regarding how they will proceed with their pregnancies and will protect the lives of women who experience complications after their abortions.”
“The announcement of an impending lawsuit is no surprise to anyone,” said Susan Armacost, Legislative Director of Wisconsin Right to Life. “It appears that the court challenge will focus on the hospital admitting privileges requirement.  Apparently, Wisconsin’s abortion clinics don’t believe their abortionists need to have hospital privileges at a hospital located within 30 miles of their clinic….or anywhere at all. Currently, when a woman experiences hemorrhaging or other life-threatening complications after an abortion in Wisconsin, the clinic puts her in an ambulance and sends her to a hospital ALONE where she is left to her own devices to explain her medical issues to the emergency room staff. The abortionist who performed the abortion is nowhere to be seen.  This deplorable situation must change.”
Armacost said the new law is on sound constitutional footing. Nine other states have passed laws requiring abortion doctors to have hospital admitting privileges. Missouri’s admitting privilege law was challenged and upheld by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

"ANALYSIS | Obama’s Economic Speech: Another Summer Rerun [Part 2]," By Curtis Dubay,July 24, 2013

More Washington Control of Infrastructure Spending Is Not a Bold Idea
Obama hinted [13] at wanting to explore “some big and bold ideas” in today’s speech. Alas, he revisited the tired notion that federal “investments” (read: spending) will reignite the economy. Americans remember the failed stimulus [14] and know stimulus 2.0 wouldn’t yield any better results. Just last month, a Rasmussen poll found that 65 percent of Americans want to cutgovernment spending [15] to help the economy.

In particular, the President’s penchant for spending on transportation and infrastructure, though seemingly innocuous, is fraught with problems. It sends the message that Washington can meet all of states’ transportation needs and wants—which it can’t and shouldn’t. It also ignores the fact that Washington is broke and already running dangerously high budget deficits [16].

A reliable, efficient, cost-effective transportation network is necessary for a thriving U.S. economy. However, if states let Washington co-opt future transportation funding and planning decisions, they will see their transportation projects politicized and their resources squandered on low-priority programs. Currently, Washington collects federal gas tax dollars from motorists and diverts a portion [17] to pay for local projects such as transit, bicycle paths, and sidewalks. These activities do not benefit motorists, because they do not measurably relieve congestion or improve mobility.

Instead, Congress and the President should give states and localities—which can partner with the private sector when it makes sense—the flexibility and control [18] they need to meet their unique transportation and infrastructure needs. Emily Goff, Research Associate, Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies

Obamacare Doesn’t Cut Costs
Per usual, the President touted his health law’s “free” benefits. But as Heritage has pointed out before [19], his law’s benefit mandates are not free—insurers are not graciously covering the cost of your added benefits. You pay for them via premium increases.

For instance, while only select seniors fell into Medicare’s “donut hole,” the CBO projects [20] that average Medicare Part D premiums will increase due to Obamacare’s new rules. An additional consequence of Obamacare’s “free” benefits: As companies will now spend more on insurance costs, workers will receive less in wages—the very thing that President Obama decried in this speech. This makes sense because companies view wages and benefits as the total cost of labor. Increasing the cost of labor in one area just means that companies will cut back in other areas. In this case, increasing the cost of benefits will decrease wages. So when raises are smaller than expected, thank Obamacare’s “free checkups.” A sad irony is the definitive work on this subject [21] was authored by Obama advisor Dr. Jonathan Gruber.

And in another exaggeration, the President claims up to half of all Americans have a pre-existing condition and his law is coming to save them by forcing insurers to offer them coverage. In reality, most of those Americans already have coverage in the group market, with a small portion of them facing barriers to coverage in the individual market [22].

Furthermore, his law created a program to accept those who were sick with no coverage before Obamacare fully takes effect in 2014, and it has run into serious funding problems [23], with enrollment at less than 30 percent of original projections and costs averaging 2.5 times greater than anticipated.

The President went on to cite the widely touted 50 percent premium decrease in New York, which has been strongly refuted [24]. Regardless, premium decreases are certainly not what experts predict in the rest of the states [25]Finally, in response to the President’s call for better solutions, The Heritage Foundation has a better plan for quality, affordable health care [26]
Alyene Senger, Research Associate, Center for Health Policy Studies

Obama Wrong on Energy and Global Warming
President Obama made two comments on energy in his speech, highlighting America’s increased oil production and saying that we’ll “continue to focus on strategies to create good jobs in wind, solar, and natural gas that are lowering energy costs and dangerous carbon pollution.” There are several problems with these statements.

First, more domestic oil and gas production, which deserved more attention for the jobs and economic wealth created in recent years, have occurred in spite of the Administration, not because of it. There has been a stark difference between oil and gas production on private and state-owned lands [27] and federal lands.

Second, where we’ve had a government strategy in the energy sector (whether grants, loan guarantees, targeted tax credits or mandates), we’ve experienced wasted taxpayer dollars and labor and capital siphoned out of the private sector [28] to benefit special interests and political preferences.

Third, it is misleading to label carbon dioxide as “dangerous pollution.” CO2 is a colorless, odorless, and non-toxic gas, and climate models have failed to predict [29] the 16-year plateau in global temperatures. We’re not experiencing catastrophic warming as a result of increased CO2—and even if we were, the President’s policies would do almost nothing to reverse course, while causing a lot of economic destruction in the process. [30] Nick Loris, Herbert and Joyce Morgan Fellow

Education Prescriptions Misguided
President Obama reiterated calls to increase “investment”—i.e., spending—on education and to “make high-quality preschool available to every four year-old in America.” Universal, government preschool, financed by the federal government, is mired in bad policy. While the Administration will hold up evaluations like the Perry preschool project to claim that every dollar spent on government preschool yields $7 in return, the findings of these small-scale studies have never been replicated [31] and accrued to a unique set of just five dozen children nearly half a century ago.

States that have large-scale public preschool programs [32] have not seen a positive impact on 4th grade reading scores, the first opportunity researchers have to assess whether preschool is having an impact on this fundamental skill. Indeed, the type of preschool-for-all President Obama envisions is far more likely to mimic the failing Head Start program, which has cost taxpayers more than $150 billion since it began in 1965, and has left low-income children no better off in the process [33]. What’s more, the Obama Administration’s new preschool proposal would add to the long list of existing federal early education and child care programs—despite little evidence of demand [34] for such programs. - Lindsey Burke, Will Skillman Fellow in Education

The President’s speech wasn’t all bad. One positive was the President’s call to make it easier for all Americans to save for retirement. That is a laudable and necessary goal and one that could be achieved through tax reform. In addition to helping Americans save, tax reform would go a long way toward freeing the economy to grow stronger. Unfortunately, like on most other important issues, President Obama has shown no leadership to actually reform the tax code.
