Christian Athletes At the Sochi Winter Olympics
No doubt you have been watching the Olympic Games and praying for your various athletes. It has been fun to hear from families and school classes on how they are having some fun with this spiritual weapon we call prayer. Some have created fantasy Olympics and track the results of each family member's athlete. Some have created poster boards for the family to research and learn about the countries and athletes. But most importantly, you are praying for these athletes, and the light of the gospel will penetrate and change many hearts.
We have already seen the athletes struggle and triumph or fail during their Olympic performances. Athletes who are considered favorites falter, while unknown athletes stand on the Olympic medal podium representing their country. It is during these times that a simple word of encouragement from a Christian teammate, chaplain or missionary might catch hold with them. Please continue to pray for divine appointments, but also for their health and safety.
This week we saw that the volunteers are also in need of our prayers, with injuries occurring at the bobsled track. As you see volunteers on TV, take a moment and pray for them as well. While you may not know their names, God does and will answer those prayers.
A large group watching Kelly Clark's faith story
The Christian outreach teams in Sochi use many different ministry tools. One tool that we will highlight is the JESUS film app which not only contains the JESUS film in many languages, but also the faith stories of athletes who are competing in Sochi. An example of these videos is Kelly Clark, the 2014 bronze medalist in the women's snowboard event. You too can download the JF App and all the videos to share with others who love the Olympics and would be encouraged to hear the athletes' faith stories.[http://jesusfilmmedia.org/video/4_529-0-aiawo-clark/english/kelly-clark-snowboarding]
Elana Meyers - USA Bobsled [http://beyondtheultimate.com/athlete/elana-meyers]
We would like to highlight medal favorite Elana Meyers who will be driving USA sled #1.
You can watch and listen to Elana talk about her battle with an eating disorder, searching various religions for help and ultimately finding true peace in Christ. She is paired with Summer Olympian and gold medalist, Lauryn Williams, who is a rookie in the bobsled.[ http://athletesinaction.org/news/sprinting-knows-no-season-for-lauryn-williams]
Here are some prayer requests directly from the athletes and chaplains:
Jill Rookard - USA Speedskater [http://athletesinaction.org/news/olympian-jilleanne-rookard-is-winning-no-matter-the-outcome]
- I would love prayers for bravery and spiritual clarity, bravery for racing and having the guts to represent Jesus in the venue.
- I don't want to get caught up in mainstream thoughts and actions. Neither do I want to get caught up in being popular in social media and such. That's a huge pitfall.
- And I want clarity and perspective no matter how I finish in rank. I want to know deep inside that God looks at matters of the heart and not at how we rank in results.
- I want to have freedom in being able to be just how God made me and not in conforming to what people expect.
Anne Schleper - USA Hockey [http://beyondtheultimate.com/athlete/Anne-Schleper]
- Gigi and Anne - To focus on what truly matters. "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" Mark 8:36.
- Praying against distractions - there is a lot of attention on personal success and gain here, as well as free apparel or material items that can easily wrap you up in this world. To be distraction-free and full of Christ! Eyes on HIM this whole tournament.
- I have a nasal cold that's been running me down since we arrived from the long travel days! Prayers for the healing of that! :)
Chaplains & Ministry Teams
- Wisdom - to know what and when to talk with an athlete, coach or volunteer, along with when to give them resources
- Strength - the hours are long, the different time zones affect the body
- Divine appointments - That God would give us boldness to initiate with people whose hearts are ready for the gospel
