On July 3rd, Congressman Bill Cassidy (R-LA) announced that his 17-year-old, unwed daughter, is pregnant and her baby is due sometime this summer. This November, Cassidy is running for the Louisiana U.S Senate seat and is challenging pro-abortion Senator Mary Landrieu. Landrieu is a third-time incumbent in Louisiana and has a 100% pro-abortion record according to National Right to life.
Cassidy is a medical doctor and is vocally pro-life. On his campaign website, he states that he works to promote a culture of life and to protect the unborn. He also has a 100% pro-life voting record and has been working to pass the Unsafe Abortion Protection Act in Congress. While some pro-abortion activists are using Cassidy’s daughter’s pregnancy as a way to criticize his pro-life views, his support of his daughter demonstrates that he is pro-life both in word and in action.
In a statement provided to the New Orleans Time Picayune, Cassidy said the following about his daughter’s pregnancy:
“Earlier this year, Laura and I learned we will become grandparents this summer. Our children have been the greatest blessing of our lives and we welcome our grandchild as a joyous addition to our family. Our daughter now faces a more challenging future than her peers. She has our unconditional love and support.”
His statement is an example of how all Louisiana families should respond to an unplanned pregnancy. Countless teenagers feel pressured to have an abortion by their parents because they do not want anyone to find out or they believe their teenager is incapable of raising a baby. However, this pressure displays a major problem in our society. Killing unborn children shouldn’t be the way we help teenagers deal with an unplanned pregnancy. Instead, loving the mother and the baby is the approach our society should adopt.
In June, the Louisiana Republican Party endorsed Cassidy for U.S. Senator, and just last week former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee, followed suit. In a recent poll by the Democratic firm, Public Policy Polling, in a runoff race Cassidy is tied with Landrieu at 47 percent.
