#578 (7/13) '’American Pastor Languishing in North Korea Labor Camp'’

URGENT PRAYERS/PETITIONS:

ATTENTION: TODAY is the 5th day of the 30 days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. (see link below for resource material you can download.) Please join me in focusing prayers of these over one billion people who need to hear the gospel of Jesus.[NOTE: 1) You can download a  page of helpful basic information about Islam and Ramadan at: http://www.opendoorsusa.org/downloads/pdf-downloads/Islam_reference_guide-1.pdf ; and 2) The following is from a 30-day prayer guide you can download at: http://www.opendoorsusa.org/downloads/pdf-downloads/2013-ramadan-prayer-calendar-1.pdf (The following is from that prayer guide.)

Month of Ramadan, Day #5 -  BREAD OF LIFE (Somalia) “Jesus said to them,…‘it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.’” (John 6:32) Somewhere inside Somalia, secret believers arrive at the agreed meeting place. Under great care the leader opens a folded piece of paper and begins to share from it. This is the only copy of the written Word they have. In Somalia, wracked by famine, crime, and hopelessness, these believers cling to His Word. Pray today for these struggling believers, that although their stomachs may often be empty, they have the “Bread of Life.”

"Egypt Facing Civil War? "Some Fear Civil War As Violence Spreads In Egypt," http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/Prayerwatch?pw=1605 -- PRAY for the nation of Egypt, as it faces a crucial  moment, that the recent events would result in its becoming a true democracy and NOT an Islamic state. PRAY esp. that the peoples' freedoms, in particular the religious freedom of its minorities (specifically its oppressed Christians) would be protected.PRAY also: 1) For peace and stability in Egypt after the government overthrow, 2) That the U.S. will effectively reach out to the new government, and 3) For safety for Americans living in Egypt

"Angry Islamists Turn Wrath on Egypt's Christians,"  By George Thomas, CBN News Sr. Reporter http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2013/July/Angry-Islamists-Turn-Wrath-on-Egypts-Christians/  Friday, July 12, 201 - "Egyptian Christians are facing growing retaliation by angry Islamists for opposing ousted President Moham3med Morsi. His supporters say Christian leaders were behind his removal from office....On Thursday, the body of a Christian merchant was found decapitated in a cemetery. Last Saturday, a Coptic Christian priest was shot by gunmen in an outdoor market. Also, days after the military coup that removed Morsi from office, Muslim extremists in southern Egypt burned dozens of Christian homes and stabbed four believers to death. "It's part of the Brotherhood's mobilization that they are targeting Christians, that they are renouncing them as behind this. If the Brotherhood is able to portray what happened as a Christian-dominated or Christian-driven protest, then they get to gain massive support in the streets," Tadros explained.

Sat. July 13th -" Texas GOP Passes Abortion Bill, Dems Vow Fight," By Chris Tomlinson, Associated Press, http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/politics/2013/July/Texas-GOP-Passes-Abortion-Bill-Dems-Vow-Fight/ PRAISE GOD for the final passage of the bill that will, among other things, make illegal abortions before the 20th week (when babies are discovered to first feel pain) and which  will regulate abortion clinics just as any other medical facilities are required . And praise God that Gov. Perry will sign the bill. PRAY that 1) the bill survive ALL court challenges, and 2) that the passage of this law will spur other such laws throughout the country and eventually be made into a federal law.

'’American Pastor Languishing in North Korea Labor Camp,’’  by Olivia Enos On July 10, 2013 [PRAY for  1)  God to use Pastor Bae to draw others to Him and otherwise accomplish His purpose through the pastor’s incarceration; 2) the pastor’s health to be sustained, 3) the pastor’s earliest possible release, and 4) God’s peace and comfort of  his family,]

In a newly released video interview [1], Kenneth Bae, a Christian pastor and Korean-American imprisoned in a North Korean labor camp, pleads for the U.S. government to take up his case and advocate for his freedom. Bae has been sentenced to 15 years [2] in a North Korean prison camp, where he has been subjected to forced labor since late May. Bae was likely given his sentence due to what was labeled by North Korea as subversive actions [3] toward the Kim Jong-un regime.

Bae pastored [2] and operated a church on the Chinese border town of Rajin (Rason City), where in 2009 he called on his congregation to pray that the walls of North Korea come down. He allegedly led a group of 250 students into North Korea to minister to North Koreans and distributed anti-regime literature, including a National Geographic special on escaping North Korea.

The U.S. [4] has called for the immediate release of Bae, but Pyongyang thus far has refused to release him. Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Google chief executive Eric Schmidt [5] requested Bae’s release during their recent visit to North Korea, but their actions evoked little response. Washington has made it clear that it is unwilling to send high-profile officials to Pyongyang to negotiate with the North Korean government. While Pyongyang insists that it will not use Bae as a bargaining chip against the U.S., news coverage and this latest interview indicate otherwise.

The Koreas used to be known as the “Jerusalem of the East,” [6] but since the split of the two countries, North Korea has become known for its systematic persecution of Christians. North Korea has state-sanctioned churches, but they arguably serve as a proxy for the communist regime and are run by North Korean officials.

Over the years, defector testimony, satellite images, and on-the-ground reports have confirmed the existence of North Korean labor camps [7] that imprison an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 people. While the United Nations recently agreed to a commission of inquiry [8] into the North Korean human rights crisis, the international community has a greater responsibility than to just investigate human rights abuses. The human rights crisis in North Korea is severe, and Bae is just one of many victims of the brutal regime. This is yet another example of the North Korean regime’s systematic persecution of Christians and blatant human rights violations.

And now, sincethe Islamic militant Hamas seized power, there are growing fears among Gaza christians that their rapidly shrinking community could disappear altogether through emigration and conversions. Pray today for these embattled believers, reminding them that they, like Jesus, are Beloved.

What should we as Christians think about the NSA domestic spying controversy?
Call it life imitating the movies: for the past two-plus weeks Edward Snowden, who leaked the details of the NSA’s domestic surveillance program, has been living in the Moscow airport, much like Viktor Navorski, the character played by Tom Hanks in the 2004 film, “The Terminal.” But whereas Navorski was a man without a country, Snowden has a country that would love to get its hands on him. So, Snowden waits in a kind of frequent-flyer no-man’s-land until he departs for Venezuela, Nicaragua, or some other country that will grant him asylum.
While it’s difficult if not impossible to sympathize with Snowden’s plight, it is also wrong to ignore the issues his actions have raised. And this makes the almost-complete Christian silence on the matter unfortunate. Note that I said “almost-complete.” There is an exception I’d like to tell you about: my friend, Dr. Timothy George. Dr. George is the dean of the Beeson Divinity School at Samford University and he’s the chairman of the Colson Center’s Board of Governors.
In an article for First Things magazine and the Colson Center, Dr. George tells the story of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s experience with the Stasi, the infamous East German secret police. While she was a student, the Stasi tried to recruit her to spy on her fellow students. She refused. Her experience of living “under the shadow of the world’s most repressive and invasive surveillance police state” taught Merkel a lesson about the lengths to which governments will go in the name of “security.” It’s a lesson she gently but forcefully shared with President Obama—a lesson we all need to learn.
The issue is not whether governments should gather information about potential threats. Apart from extreme libertarians, no one insists otherwise. As Dr. George writes, “In a dangerous world where people of ill will plot to do harm to others, some surveillance capacity must be allowed.” The key word is “some.” What the NSA did involves a whole lot more than “some.” Instead, what Snowden revealed was the “hyper-collecting of metadata of millions of Americans with no connection to terrorism.” In other words, surveillance.
What’s more, as Dr. George notes, the efficacy of this program is far from clear. For instance, “We know for sure that it did nothing to stop the massacres at Fort Hood and the Boston Marathon.” And given the history of the war on terror, we should be skeptical when we hear the words “trust us.” Instead, we should be asking questions about privacy and the relationship between government and the governed. Not because privacy, at least for the Christian, is an end in itself, but because a healthy respect for privacy “points to and safeguards something else even more basic and fundamental, namely, human dignity.”
Dr. George, a Southern Baptist, quotes Vatican II’s Declaration on Religious Freedom, which says that human beings “should act on their own judgment, enjoying and making use of a responsible freedom, not driven by coercion but motivated by sense of duty.” A surveillance state subverts this goal.
And as Dr. George reminds us, “Only God is omniscient. To God alone are we to be a completely open book. To God, and only to God, should we say—or need to say—‘You know when I leave and when I get back; I am never out of your sight.’ ” I urge you to read Dr. George’s thought-provoking column.

God, the NSA and Us: Thoughts on Domestic Spying - Next Steps - Many Christians have been silent about (or scratching their heads over) the disturbing revelation of the NSA’s vast data-mining enterprise. Dr. George provides words of wisdom concerning NSA’s overreach, and succinctly explains why we should be concerned. Make sure to read, tweet, and share Dr. George’s  article about the NSA’s abuse of power. It's a cautionary message about avoiding an American-style Stasi.

July 11 ALMIGHTY (Afghanistan)“…’who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.’” (Revelation 1:8b). The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan does not recognize any Afghan citizens as being Christians, nor are Afghan citizens legally permitted to convert to Christianity. In Afghanistan, no visible Christian church exists outside of diplomatic walls and foreign military bases. Yet, the church does exist! Afghani believers take great risks to meet in small groups; others worship in secret. Many feel isolated or alone. Today, and during the Ramadan season, pray for these believers to be filled with His Almighty presence.

"America Ripe for Muslim Brotherhood’s Agenda?" - By Erick Stakelbeck, CBN News Terrorism Analyst, Monday, July 08, 2013   http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2013/July/America-to-Become-Brotherhoods-Fifth-Column/

WASHINGTON -- The Muslim Brotherhood is a well-known and powerful force throughout the Islamic world. In recent years, it's turned its attention to America and communities here that are ripe for its radical agenda.

CBN News recently spoke with two American Muslims who shed light on the Brotherhood's tactics inside the United States.

Brotherhood's Plan for America

Dr. Ahmed Mansour, president of the International Quranic Center, watched for years as the Muslim Brotherhood slowly laid the groundwork to seize power in his home country of Egypt. Now, in America, he worries the Brotherhood will follow a similar playbook.

"They are working in the American community to make it as a fifth column," Mansour told CBN News. "They want to take over any place they are in."

Mansour taught at Cairo's famed Al-Azhar University, where he saw the Muslim Brotherhood's ideology up close."They believe that the world is divided into two camps: the camp of believers, their camp, and the camp of disbelievers, the camp of war. And they have the religious duty to war against that other camp.

Mansour founded the Quranist movement to present a more moderate interpretation of Islam. Over the years, it led to prison and harassment in Egypt. He was finally forced to leave the country in 2001 after speaking out against the likes of the Brotherhood.

Brotherhood's Two Faces

"They are very cunning," Mansour said of the Brotherhood. "They usually use two faces. They use two discourses: the discourse among them, against all the people -- and a discourse, a very beautiful discourse, for all the non-Muslims." But Mansour said they're real agenda is to seize power. "Yes, this is what the Muslim Brothers are all about," he said.

Meanwhile, "Abdullah," another moderate Muslim, says followers of the Muslim Brotherhood have taken over mosques in the Boston area. CBN News disguised his face and voice for his safety."They want to go after the young minds," Abdullah said. "And the way they go after the young minds is, either they start scholarships in high school or they bring them to a certain level of obedience. It is called "tarbiyya." They have classes for them and so on." Abdullah explained that once you're a Muslim Brother, you're in for life."When some young man is ready to take the oath, he is given an oath so he will never leave the organization. They will do anything," he said.

He says the Brotherhood also operates on Boston-area campuses.Mansour, for one, is not surprised. He said he was shocked when he arrived in America and found that radicals controlled many of the mosques he visited -- even in the Washington, D.C., area. "I escape from them in Egypt and find them here. I say to myself, 'Where can I go? Can I go to the moon?'" Mansour said.

The Brotherhood's influence may even stretch beyond the local level. There have been reports in Egyptian media that Muslim Brotherhood operatives have influence in the Obama administration when it comes to counterterrorism and Mideast policy-making.

As for Mansour, he said he can't get any backing from U.S. government agencies for his moderate message.

''Egypt: Fruits of the Obama Administration’s Neglect,'' -  By Kim Holmes On July 8, 2013 @ 12:00 pm In American Leadership,Featured | No Comments

For a leader, neglect almost always turns out for the worse. Problems fester. Opponents are emboldened, and supporters demoralized. Aimlessness begets powerlessness, as changing positions confuse and bewilder. Then, after all is said and done, the very thing you most earnestly wanted to avoid comes to pass anyway, only now it’s too late for you to do anything about it.

That is the sad predicament President Obama now faces in Egypt. He has never figured out what to do. He is like an eager amateur who rushes in with easy answers, only to find they don’t work. He then pulls back in a fog of passivity, pretending his newfound aloofness was his intent all along.

Look at his record in Egypt. At one point, Obama backed former President Hosni Mubarak. Then he abandoned him. Next, under the democratic banner of “letting the Egyptian people decide,” he stood on the sidelines as the Muslim Brotherhood took power and began to run the country into the ground. Again unsure of what to do, he took what he thought was the line of least resistance—supporting the Brotherhood and its leader, President Mohamed Morsi.

Only that didn’t work either. Now Morsi is gone, and all the President can muster in response is that he is “deeply concerned” by the Egyptian military’s decision to oust Morsi. Once again Obama got it wrong, and his policy is repudiated.

Foreign policy is hard. An American President cannot dictate events in Egypt. But that’s no excuse for wandering all over the place in confusion. The United States had tremendous influence with the army at the beginning of the Egyptian revolution. Obama squandered it by backing Morsi and his Brotherhood allies.

Now the demonstrators accuse the U.S. of being Morsi’s lackey. Protesters, disappointed by Obama’s uncritical support for Morsi, carried signs denouncing President Obama; one banner visible the day the military deposed Morsi, for example, read “Obama Stop Supporting MB [Muslim Brotherhood] Fascist Regime.”

That’s quite an “achievement.” The only “friends” America seems to have left are Morsi supporters in the anti-Western Brotherhood, who despise American values, oppose U.S. policies, and now blame Obama for backing the army “coup” against Morsi. Thus, the U.S. ends up on the side of the very Islamist group that spawned decades of Islamist enemies of America. And it does so in such a way that its natural allies, the secular democrats, no longer trust us.

There are two reasons why Obama has bungled Egypt. The first is he sincerely believes that too much American influence is a bad thing. Believing deeply that American power is a problem, he seems to think remaining aloof will prove that America is not an inveterate enemy of political Islam.

Only that’s not the problem in Egypt. It’s not American power that is causing Egyptians to doubt the U.S. It is wavering and support for the wrong side. In particular for the demonstrators, the Administration’s embrace of Morsi is seen as a betrayal of our nation’s dedication to democracy and freedom.

The other reason? Obama is confused about what constitutes democracy. Even though he himself said democracy is “more than elections,” that is not the way he’s acted. He watched as the election process chose the worst of the political lot in Egypt, all the while claiming that the U.S. should not “interfere” with the democratic rights of the people. He talked a good game, but his passivity only legitimized the claims that the Brotherhood is a “true” democratic force in Egypt (which they decidedly are not).

Whatever happens, nobody in Egypt is likely to trust Obama’s word again. His tendency is to support whoever ends up in power, but in the meantime, none of the factions knows which way he will jump. As English rhetorician Richard Whately once said, “It is the neglect of timely repair that makes rebuilding necessary.” Yes indeed. That’s why it’s time to start rebuilding our Egypt policy.

July 9 - ADVOCATE - (Pakistan) - “And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ the righteous.” (1 John 2:1)
In Pakistan, many Christians fear the blasphemy law. These laws are often used against them in battles over land, possessions, or simply to end a dispute. As Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during the Ramadan season, tensions can run especially high due to the long periods of sunlight, averaging 14 hours each day. Pray today, in the name of Jesus, for goodwill and justice to prevail for His people.

Egypt Facing Civil War?

Texas To Vote On Major Pro-Life Bill THIS Week - PRAY that the Texas House will finally vote to approve a bill  (which the Governor is ready to sign) that will, among other things, make illegal abortions before the 20th week (when babies are discovered to first feel pain) and which  will regulate abortion clinics just as any other medical facilities are. PRAY that the passage of this law will spur other such laws throughout the country and eventually be made into a federal law.

AS MUSLIMS WORLDWIDE CELEBRATE RAMADAN: [The following was included in an email from Open Doors ministry, July 8, 2013.}

"The following is from a blog posted last summer by a Christian leader in Egypt:“With the back-drop of Ramadan brings a special cultural and religious atmosphere for Muslims in several ways. It’s a month of celebration of one of Islam’s most important pillars of belief. More food is consumed in this month than any other month of the year. From the time they break their fast each evening to the time they start the fast at dawn the next day, some Muslims keep eating and drinking almost all night. This is called 'iftar.' "

"The religious atmosphere among Muslims rises dramatically, more than any other month of the year. This is a holy month for Islam, so they are promised to gain favor from Allah when they do good works, hoping that some of the bad things they have done during the past year will be erased. Many Muslims distribute free grocery packages or hold street-side free iftar tables for passersby to sit down and eat if they are unable to reach home in time to break for the evening fast. And of course, Ramadan is also a special month when Muslims want to try to win ‘infidels’ back to Islam. They try to convert their Christian neighbors, colleagues and friends, which causes a lot of tension among Egypt’s Christians. These Christians must remain respectful but firm against their Muslim acquaintances’ conversion efforts without falling into heated arguments."

“My heart is broken for the millions of Muslims here in Egypt and around the world, who are seeking peace with God this month. They try so hard to do good works in an effort to somehow earn His favor and forgiveness. It brings tears to my eyes that most of my countrymen do not know that Jesus died and rose from the dead to freely give them, through simple faith, the peace with God they so long to have.”

"Dreams, Visions Moving Muslims to Christ" - By Chris Mitchell and Julie Stahl, CBN News Jerusalem Bureau, February 06, 2013  http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/insideisrael/2012/June/Dreams-Visions-Moving-Muslims-to-Christ/[AS I SEE IT: There is no way of denying the things talked about in this article are things God could be doing. I choose to believe He wants to move in a special way in these final days before Jesus' return. That is why for awhile now I have been encouraged to pray DAILY for God to speak in dreams and visions (and even signs and wonders) to Muslims, and esp. to Islamic jihadists who wage war against American and coalition forces in Afghanistan and throughout the world. Where there is not a Christian believer to witness to them, may God be using dreams and visions to bring untold millions into His kingdom in these last days.n Amen.]

JERUSALEM, Israel -- Several years ago, Ali took the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca known as Hajj.
"Of course when I went to Mecca I was going there in order to pay hommage to the Kabba and to fulfill the requirements in Islam," he recalled. But the trip became more of a spiritual journey than he could ever imagine.

"That night I saw Jesus in a dream. First, Jesus touched my forehead with his finger. And after touching me, He said, 'You belong to me,'" Ali recalled."And then He touched me above my heart," he continued. "'You have been saved, follow me. You belong to me,' he said." Ali's story in Mecca was told and dramatized in a DVD called "More Than Dreams." "I decided I'm not going to finish the Hajj, the pilgrimage. Whatever it takes, I'm going to follow that voice," he explained.

The film documents and dramatizes Ali's story and several other Muslims who came to faith in Jesus through a dream or vision."We're seeing that all around. We're hearing about people that have never even thought about Jesus as savior," Tom Doyle, with e3 Ministries, said. "They're content Muslims and they're having dreams over and over."

Doyle and his wife Joanna take the gospel to the Muslim world. He's also the author of the upcoming book, Dreams and Visions: Is Jesus Awakening the Muslim World? "I think our God is a fair God, that He's righteous and just, and people are seeking and they don't know where to go," Doyle said. "Maybe they don't have a Bible, maybe there's no missionary in the village," he said. "He'll get the message to them somehow."

The phenomenon of dreams and visions has surfaced throughout the Muslim world, from Indonesia to Morocco. "In the church if you ask how many people came to Christ, 80 percent will say, 'I saw Him in a dream,'" one woman in central Asia told CBN News. Her identity is being protected for security reasons.A Christian friend challenged her to ask God to speak to her personally. "So I decided to ask Him," she said. "The next day ... in my dream I saw Jesus ... I decided to come to Him."
Hazem Farraj hosts "Reflections," a satellite program for Muslims. He said he often gets feedback about dreams and visions.

"I had one lady write me ... she said, 'I turned on the television and there you were ... the words that were coming out of your mouth were so peaceful I fell asleep,'" Farraj recalled. "She said, 'When I fell asleep I ended up having a vision of Jesus and I saw the Lord,'" he continued. "She said, 'As soon as I looked over I knew that Christ was the sacrifice, the son of the God."

Doyle said the dream or vision is usually the start, not the end, of a Muslim's conversion. "Nobody goes to sleep a Muslim and wakes up a Christian, but it knocks down the false barriers that are inherent in Islam," Doyle explained. The Doyles said beneath the current revolution in the Middle East, there's a spiritual earthquake. "As things heat up politically and spiritually within Islam, man, the Holy Spirit is moving even more powerfully," Joanna said."This is the time when hearts are open, people are desperate, governments are changing," her husband added. "Everybody's foundation has massive cracks in it and Jesus is the answer that can come in and fill that need."

Many veteran missionaries to the Muslim world say dreams and visions, along with satellite television, are introducing Muslims to Jesus in unprecedented numbers. They add that more Muslims are coming to Jesus than at any other time in the 1,400-year history of Islam. The Doyles want believers in the West to join this spiritual revolution. "Not everybody is going to go the Middle East. But they can pray," Doyle said."And no government, no leader can block intercession around the world," he said. "So we need to pray as believers that God would continue to push the gospel out to the ends of the earth." [ *Originally published June 29, 2012.]

Doctors Perform Thousands of Unnecessary Surgeries," - June 24, 2013; http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?  http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=23310&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=DPDArticle_ID=23310&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=DPD

Tens of thousands of times each year, patients are wheeled into the nation's operating rooms for surgery that isn't necessary. Some fall victim to predators that enrich themselves by bilking insurers for operations that are not medically justified. Even more turn to doctors who simply lack the competence or training to recognize when a surgical procedure can be avoided, either because the medical facts don't warrant it or because there are non-surgical treatments that would better serve the patient, says USA Today.

The scope and toll of the problem are enormous, yet it remains largely hidden. Public attention has been limited to a few sensational cases.
  • In fact, unnecessary surgeries might account for 10 percent to 20 percent of all operations in some specialties, including a wide range of cardiac procedures as well as many spinal surgeries.
  • Knee replacements, hysterectomies and cesarean sections are among the other surgical procedures performed more often than needed.
Since 2005, more than 1,000 doctors have made payments to settle or close malpractice claims in surgical cases that involved allegations of unnecessary or inappropriate procedures. About half the doctors' payments involved allegations of serious permanent injury or death, and many of the cases involved multiple plaintiffs, suggesting many hundreds, if not thousands, of victims.

The costs of unnecessary surgeries touch consumers and taxpayers in ways most never imagine. Medicare, Medicaid and their private insurance counterparts spend billions of dollars on operations that shouldn't be done, draining health care dollars that could go to far better use.
  • About 10 percent of all spinal fusions paid for by Medicare in 2011 were not necessary, either because there was no medical basis for them or because doctors did not follow standards of care by exploring non-surgical treatments.
  • A 2011 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reviewed records for 112,000 patients who had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a pacemaker-like device that corrects heartbeat irregularities. In 22.5 percent of the cases, researchers found no medical evidence to support installing the devices.
The fee-for-service nature of U.S. health care essentially rewards those that put more patients under the knife. The 2010 health care law, still being implemented, promises changes in the payment system that may pressure health care providers to cut unnecessary surgeries, but the key is to redefine the doctor-patient relationship.

"High Speed Railways Are Not Realistic in the United States ,"- June 5, 2013; http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=23245&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=DPD

Evidence suggests that high-speed rail's limited success in Europe and Asia is not transferrable to the United States, says Baruch Feignbaum, a transportation policy analyst at the Reason Foundation. The majority of high-speed rail lines require large government subsidies from both general taxpayers and drivers.
  • Even with generous subsidies, traveling by high-speed rail is still more expensive than flying for 12 of the 23 most popular high-speed rail routes in the world.
  • The evidence suggests that high-speed rail can only be competitive on routes that are between 200 miles and 500 miles in length.
High-speed rail is also very expensive to build.
  • Most new routes cost at least $10 million per mile to construct. And while operating costs vary, the cheapest European rail line costs more than $50,000 per seat to operate annually.
  • This means that a U.S. high-speed rail line would need ridership of between 6 million and 9 million people per year to break even.
Advocates cite other advantages in support of high-speed rail, but most of these fall apart under close examination:
  • Environment: High-speed rail creates more pollution than it prevents because building a high-speed rail line is very energy-intensive.
  • Economic Development: High-speed rail does not create much new development; it merely redirects development from one area to another.
  • Mobility: High-speed rail is also unlikely to improve mobility since most of its potential passengers already travel by air.
Finally, there are several factors that suggest high-speed rail's limited success in Europe and Asia may not be transferrable to the United States:
  • Most countries have built high-speed rail to relieve overcrowding on their existing lines. The United States lacks this overcrowding, which suggests consumer demand for high-speed rail may not be there. Furthermore, freight rail dominates track usage.
  • The United States has far higher rates of car ownership than most other countries. Gas taxes are lower, road tolls are less common, and many cities, especially in the South and West, have grown up around the automobile. This also serves to limit demand for high-speed rail travel.
  • Railways are subject to outdated labor laws that were enacted when railroads did not face competition. Operating a passenger railroad in the existing U.S. regulatory environment is not a profitable proposition.

"Tough Love of Country - How to Be a Patriot," - By: Chuck Colson: July 4, 2013  (This commentary originally aired on July 4, 1995.) http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcomermentaries/breakpoint-commentaries-archive/entry/13/22721?spMailingID=6481936&spUserID=MTMyMjM2ODE5OQS2&spJobID=77313927&spReportId=NzczMTM5MjcS1
Chuck Colson
Every Fourth of July, Coney Island hosts a hot dog-eating contest. Contestants gather from around the country to prove that they can stuff themselves with more hot dogs in 12 minutes than anyone else.
Well, not everyone pursues their hot dog eating so competitively. But it does seem that downing hot dogs and lemonade is the quintessential American way of expressing patriotism on the Fourth of July: Family picnics and fireworks to celebrate the founding of our country. Now, I realize that when you gathered with your friends and relatives, you probably weren't thinking about doing anything particularly patriotic. You were just having a good time, right?
But St. Augustine would tell you that that was exactly the right way to express patriotism. I don't mean to say Augustine wrote about the finer points of American hot dog eating. What he wrote is that the best way to develop patriotism is by loving your own family. You see, Christians are commanded to love the whole world. But as everyone knows, that's utterly impractical. No finite human being could possibly love every other person in the world.
So God has placed us in concrete relationships where we can learn to love. As Augustine puts it, it's as though God had cast lots and assigned each one of us to a particular family, a particular church, and a particular country. We cannot love the whole world, but we can love the particular people in the relationships where God has placed us-moving outward from family to church, community, and nation, in an ever-widening circle. That's how Christian patriotism is built.
You see, it's easy to love people in the abstract. It's much harder to love the real flesh-and-blood people we interact with in our families, churches, and communities. As C. S. Lewis explained, we are constantly tempted to love only what is lovable — to love our wives only when they're kind and beautiful, to love our husbands only when they're successful, to love our children only when they're pleasant.
But that's not the way God loves. God loves us even when we're unlovable-just because He has chosen us to be His people. And He commands us to do the same.
We're to love our families even when they're unlovable — just because they're ours. We're to love the church-just because we belong to one another as the family of God. And we're to love our country just because it's our own. Not because it's the best and most democratic country in the world-which it may not be at times-but because it's the place where God has put us. That's "tough love" of country: being utterly honest about our nation's flaws and shortcomings, and yet still continuing to love it.
So as we pack up the leftover hot dog buns and put away the ketchup, let's keep alive this reminder of what the Fourth of July is all about. When we gather together with our families and relatives — and renew our bonds of love with them — we are practicing, at its most basic level, true patriotism.
