#2662 (5/5) SUNDAY SPECIAL: "Mother Teresa’s Hate: When the Common Good isn’t Common or Good"

"MOTHER TERESA'S HATE: WHEN THE COMMON GOOD ISN'T COMMON OR GOOD" - by Dustin Messer, Breakpoint.org, April 24, 2019; http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/04/mother-teresas-hate-when-the-common-good-isnt-common-or-good/
“Do either of you agree with the proposition that Mother Teresa is issuing hate speech?” That was the question Ted Cruz recently asked of Twitter and Facebook executives during an open hearing on the Senate floor. It’s an odd question to ask of a woman who dedicated her life to the service of the weak, the vulnerable, and the marginalized.

And yet, days earlier, Twitter had indeed taken down a quote from Mother Teresa for violating their terms and conditions. The tweet in question was to do with the victims of abortion: “Abortion is profoundly anti-women. Three quarters of its victims are women: Half the babies and all the mothers.”

It’s a popular axiom nowadays to insist that Christians wouldn’t have such a bad rap in the world if we were only more concerned with promoting “the common good” than with protecting our own self-interest. To be fair, I’ve made such arguments myself. In a recent lecture on cultural leadership, I referenced the best description of leadership of which I know: “Leadership does not begin with title or position,” Says Andy Crouch, “it begins the moment you are more concerned about others’ flourishing than your own.”

If Christians are called to lead—and make no mistake, we are—then we mustn’t become just another in a long list of self-interest groups. The love of Christ bids us to seek the wellbeing of others, even our enemies, before seeking our own. The classic line from Dietrich Bonhoeffer is still worthy of deep reflection: “The Church is the Church only when it exists for others…not dominating, but helping and serving. It must tell men of every calling what it means to live for Christ, to exist for others.”

In short, I don’t question the idea that the church should be working toward the common good—again, it of course should—what I question is whether or not such works will spare us the ire of the watching world.

Not Common
In a post-Christian world, the common good won’t seem so common. Take, for example, the life of William Wilberforce. His colleagues and friends viewed him as an obnoxious gadfly, someone intent on bringing economic and social harm upon them. They were right, of course. Wilberforce’s crusade to end the slave trade did indeed have adverse effects on his friends in the trade. Yet, he understood that the common good includes all God’s children, not just the vocal and powerful.

Not Good
If there’s anything Modernity has taught us, it’s that the Christian understanding of the good can’t be fully realized apart from the Christian understanding of God. Those values we’d previously assumed to be universal and “self-evident,” it turns out, flow from a very specific worldview, one in which there is a God, revealed in Jesus the Nazarene, and man is made in His image.

Insofar as Modernity continues to distance itself from a classical, biblical anthropology, that which we call “the common good” will increasingly come to be seen as arcane, bigoted, and repressive. “When a society rejects the Christian account of who we are,” insists Alan Jacobs, “it doesn’t become less moralistic but far more so, because it retains an inchoate sense of justice but has no means of offering and receiving forgiveness.” As the new vision of justice takes preeminence in our society, the old idea of good can only be vilified.

Following Love
Mother Teresa used to insist that she was a tiny pencil in the hand of God, and that God was writing a love letter to the world with her life. It was a beautiful sentiment, but the silence offered by the executives of Facebook and Twitter suggest they didn’t get the message. Their silence, and all that it represents, is disheartening.

The prophet Isaiah spoke of a society that called evil good and good evil, who mistook darkness for light and light for darkness, who thought bitter was sweet and sweet was bitter. In such a time as that, in such a time as this, the common good will seem anything but common or good.

And yet, I don’t think Mother Teresa would’ve been as discouraged by the executive’s silence as I was. “The success of love is in the loving,” she used to say, “it is not in the result of loving. It is natural in love to want the best for the other person, but whether it turns out that way or not does not determine the value of what we have done.”

#2661 (5/4) "President Trump Issues New Pro-Life Rules Protecting Doctors and Nurses From Having to Do Abortions"

"PRESIDENT TRUMP ISSUES NEW PRO-LIFE RULES PROTECTING DOCTORS AND NURSES FROM  HAVING TO DO ABORTIONS" -  Steven Ertelt,  MAY 2, 2019 | https://www.lifenews.com/2019/05/02/president-trump-issues-new-pro-life-rules-protecting-doctors-and-nurses-from-having-to-do-abortions/
Today, on the National Day of Prayer, President Donald trump issued new rules that further protect doctors, nurses and medical professionals who don’t want to be forced to do abortions or refer for them. Trump announced new regulations through the Department of Health and Human Services that will more effectively enforce existing federal laws that protect the conscience rights of healthcare providers.

Despite current law that has protected conscience rights for over 30 years, the lack of regulations resulted in confusion and a lack of awareness within the healthcare community, leaving healthcare personnel vulnerable to discrimination and forcing them to drop their specialties at a time of healthcare scarcity. The 440 pages of new regulations, issued by HHS Secretary Alex Azar, provide regulatory backbone to the First Amendment conscience rights of Americans working in the medical profession and will help ensure that no doctor or nurse will be be forced to violate their conscience while serving patients.

Although the Constitution and numerous federal laws provide robust protections for the conscience rights of medical professionals, these laws are being violated as doctors, nurses, and medical students are being compelled to participate in abortion. The regulations clarify what recourse is available to victims of discrimination under the law and what penalties the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Civil Rights may enforce for violations.
“This rule ensures that healthcare entities and professionals won’t be bullied out of the health care field because they decline to participate in actions that violate their conscience, including the taking of human life,” a statement from OCR Director Roger Severino said. “Protecting conscience and religious freedom not only fosters greater diversity in health care, it’s the law.
“Laws prohibiting government funded discrimination against conscience and religious freedom will be enforced like every other civil rights law,” Severino explained.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins applauded the new regulations in comments to LifeNews.com. "On this National Day of Prayer, many healthcare providers have an answer to their prayers. President Trump announced today new regulations that will enforce over two-dozen federal laws so that healthcare professionals won’t be forced to choose between their moral beliefs and their desire to help patients,” he said.
“President Trump’s efforts reflect a long history in American constitutional law about the morality of conscience rights. Unfortunately, the previous administration had little concern for protecting the conscience rights of doctors, nurses, and residents,” Perkins added. “Protecting the right of all healthcare providers to make professional judgments based on moral convictions and ethical standards is foundational to federal law and is necessary to ensure that access to healthcare is not diminished, which would occur if they were forced out of their jobs because of their ethical stances.”

Ashley McGuire, Senior Fellow at The Catholic Association, also praised the rules. “No healthcare worker should ever be forced to choose between their practice or their faith. That principle is enshrined in countless laws and regulations but has been violated for far too long. Today’s regulation restates our nation’s commitment to conscience rights in the healthcare industry,” she told LifeNews.

Other leading pro-life groups also praised the rule:
National Right to Life President Carol Tobias told LifeNews: “There are many statutes that would protect the conscience rights of health care workers, such as the Weldon amendment. Unfortunately, the previous administration refused to enforce them and looked the other way when violated. We thank President Trump and his administration for enforcing these laws and protecting health care workers who object to participating in the taking of innocent human life. We applaud the president for following through on another promise.”

Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser added:
“Today President Trump and HHS Secretary Azar delivered an important victory for conscience rights, fulfilling a key promise to pro-life voters,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Last year the Conscience and Religious Freedom Division of the Office of Civil Rights was established at HHS to investigate and address conscience violations – an essential step to protect pro-life doctors and nurses like Cathy DeCarlo, who was forced to assist in a late-term abortion or lose her job. These new regulations go even further to put teeth back in the law after years of nonenforcement by the Obama administration. Abortion is not health care and no health care professional should ever be forced to participate in the destruction of human life.
“As some states attempt to expand abortion on demand through birth, with no conscience protections whatsoever, these regulations underscore the Trump administration’s seriousness about standing up for pro-life health care workers and institutions. We thank President Trump and Secretary Azar for their commitment to fighting discrimination. We also continue to urge Congress to enact a private right of action so victims can seek relief in court in the future, no matter who holds power in Washington.”

And Jeanne Mancini, President of March for Life commented:
“Those who serve our nation’s sick in the health care industry, or who are training to do so, should not be forced to violate their conscience in the process. The new Health and Human Services rule will ensure that the rights of medical professionals, guaranteed by the United States Constitution as well as Federal law, will be respected. No one should be forced to participate in life-ending procedures like abortion or similar activities that go against their religious beliefs or moral convictions.

"JOAQUIN PHOENIX AND 'THE GOSPEL OF MARY' -  GNOSTIC FICTION COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU" - by John Stonestreet and G. Shane Morris, Breakpoint.org, May 1, 2019; http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/05/breakpoint-joaquin-phoenix-and-the-gospel-of-mary/ [AS I SEE IT: Years ago, it was "The DaVinci Code." Now we have another movie that purports to tell what they say is an unknown story related to Christianity. As Christians decide how to spend their entertainment dollars, they again need to be sure they support movies that are rooted in truth and not man-made stories with false agendsa. - Stan]
Remember that 1980’s cough syrup commercial when Chris Robinson said, “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV”? I wanted to paraphrase these immortal words when I read what actor Joaquin Phoenix of “Gladiator” fame said about his role as Jesus in the upcoming movie, “Mary Magdalene.” Phoenix is not the Son of Man, but he plays him on the big screen. His is a very different Jesus than the one we meet in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Judging by the trailer and the press roll-out, the movie will draw heavily on a second-century Gnostic text known as “the Gospel of Mary.” In a recent interview with Newsweek, Phoenix slammed early Christianity for not canonizing this and other apocryphal writings about Jesus, saying: “Why was Mary’s book not included in the Bible? The stench of blatant sexism,” he says, is “inescapable.” Phoenix went even further in another interview: “Somebody made that decision to exclude [Mary Magdalene’s] observations and feelings about the life of Christ and her experience. There seems to have been an overt intention to exclude women from that process.”

The truth is, no one excluded Mary Magdalene’s experiences. Scholars universally agree that she didn’t write this so-called gospel. Along with other texts like “the Apocryphon of John,” and “the Sophia of Jesus Christ,” “the Gospel of Mary” was never recognized by the Church as part of the New Testament. The reason is that it is an obvious forgery. The Gospel of Mary is a work of fan-fiction by members of a false religion who attempted to co-opt Jesus for their own purposes. True to the pattern of other Gnostic texts, the “Gospel of Mary” claims that Jesus delivered a private revelation to its namesake that radically contradicts the canonical gospels.

Even more, the Mary Magdalene revealed in the Bible is the best response we have to the accusation that early Christianity was sexist. Recall that she is reported as the first witness of the risen Lord—a claim that would have scandalized first-century Jewish readers. In that culture, the testimony of a woman was considered worthless, yet she and several other women were entrusted to take the message of Christ’s resurrection back to His disciples, and those disciples were hesitant to believe them. If the four gospels were written to make Jesus’ male followers look good at the expense of the women, they did a lousy job.

Authors like Alvin J. Schmidt and Rodney Stark have documented that Christianity—far from oppressing women—radically elevated their status in the ancient world. It’s hard for us in 2019 to grasp just how revolutionary the Apostle Paul’s words were that “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

And speaking of important background material, Joaquin Phoenix grew up in a pseudo-Christian cult that seems to have soured him toward religion. While we should be sensitive to that experience, we have to admit he’s no expert.  Even so, his unfounded statements and the false story this movie tells will strike many as convincing, in the same way Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code” did a few years back.

The good news is, we live in what I like to call the “golden age of good arguments.” There is a wealth of apologetic resources available that ably debunks the idea that the Gnostic gospels were unfairly suppressed or that they offer any new information about the life of Jesus. We’ll link you to just a few of those resources at BreakPoint.org.

The problem isn’t that the answers aren’t available. The problem is that the answers rarely reach as many people as the falsehoods do from the publishing industry, the media, or Hollywood—which, like the Gnostics of old—never tire of producing false Christianities and false Jesuses.

Our job is to learn the answers, to engage in conversations, to dialogue about those answers, and to do our best to set the record straight.

“INTERCESSORS ARE THE RUDDER” – A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT - Wanda Alger, June 28th, 2017; https://www.getamericapraying.com/blog/I was recently given a word by my good friend, Bill Yount. His word greatly encouraged me as an intercessor. Working for Intercessors for America, I soon realized it was not just a word for me, but for all who have been praying for our nation, wondering if their prayers are truly making any difference. Bill told me, “I kept seeing you as a small rudder on a huge ship. Hidden, but giving guidance. Although it seemed slow it was turning the whole ship. Patience was needed to see the impact of your…ministry. I sense the Lord saying, ‘Don’t jump ship! I’ve made you the rudder!’ ” I was immediately touched in my spirit by this encouragement, knowing that our seemingly small place in prayer was having a great impact.
James 3:4 talks about the power of a small rudder to steer a large ship. In this scripture about the power of our tongue, consider the power of prophetic intercession! In the Forerunner Commentary on this verse we read, “…rudders manipulate the course of immense ocean vessels with a slight movement of a pilot’s hand. Since it is underwater and aft, the rudder of a ship does its work UNSEEN. A passenger is ignorant of its movements most of the time. Yet, when it is in proper working order, the rudder holds more power over the ship than the wind. The wind will blow, toss, even destroy the ship’s rigging, but the rudder guides the ship exactly where it directs.”
This is God’s promise to the intercessors in this hour of national turbulence. Don’t stop praying! Your prayers have great power to turn the ship! Continue praying, interceding, and discerning the workings and movements of the Holy Spirit, being faithful to God’s commands. As we come together to declare God’s faithfulness, this nation will, once again, head in the direction that God intends. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Regardless of the winds of adversity and the fires of the enemy, God’s people have a power that cannot be matched. Let us join in faith and continue to pray and speak of God’s faithfulness in order to bring God’s people and this nation into the fullness of God’s plans. Note this additional encouragement from God’s word:
Colossians 2:15 – “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (ESV).
Psalm 33:8-11 – “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.”
Wanda Alger, IFA Field Correspondent

PRAY FOR AMERICA: THANK GOD for His many blessings on America throughout it's history. May we then ask that AMERICA once again be a blessing TO GOD, by once again submitting to HIS will in our affairs - both personal and national - that He may truly "heal our land." (2 Chron. 7:14) Short of that, we should not be saying "God Bless America"but instead "God be merciful towards America!"
PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS:  1) Pray for President Trump and his advisers, that they would select Godly leaders at the federal level who will be accountable to do an excellent job (or be fired!) ; that he would seek God's wisdom and be enabled to lead our country effectively in the years ahead; and 2) Pray our leaders at every level of government will Spirit-filled, leading us with Godly wisdom and integrity; that they will  only pass legislation and enact policies that will benefit Americans today as well as future generations and NOT do any lasting harm.
SUPREME COURT: PRAY that the justices will only hand down decisions that are Constitutionally sound and in the best interests of our country now and for future generations.

World-Wide Prayer Requests:

PRAISE GOD for the continuing recent successes against ISIS! P
ray that coalition forces will be able to  fully destroy the leadership and infrastructure of ISIS.
*For believers in Syria and in this region as they navigate so much uncertainty. May they remain faithful to God through these most difficult times as He sustains them with peace and His Spirit's strength.

STANDING STRONG THROUGH THE STORM - OpenDoorsUSA.org
At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.- 2 Tim. 4:16
SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO SUFFER
The Apostle Paul knew exactly what it was like to be alone, to be deserted by all who called themselves “brothers” and “sisters.” A former colleague who has done considerable travel among the persecuted says, “It is hard to believe that Christians are the largest persecuted group in the world today. But it is even more difficult to believe that this is so seldom mentioned in our gatherings and church services. More Christians know the names of their favorite actors than their fellow believers who are in prison.”
He continues, “With every trip something in my heart breaks as I hear the echoes of suffering:
I remember the echoes of an Egyptian mother as she shared how her young boy was stuck in a haystack because she refused to deny Jesus.
I remember the sounds of weeping as fellow students in Indonesia shared how Sariman, their co-student, was hacked to death.
I remember the cries of anguish as we walked from church to church that was burned to the ground on the island of Lombok.
I remember the tears of Rebecca in Iran as she showed the picture of her father who was stabbed to death for sharing the gospel.
I remember the voice of Pastor Daniel in Vietnam as he shared how he was chained to the ground for six months.
I remember the fear of Grace from Sudan as she shared how her church was attacked and her friend was shot through the head.
Oh, I remember the cries of Caleb in Eritrea as he shared with tears how two dear friends were executed in front of him because of their faith.
And I remember the tears of Joy in the southern Philippines as she shared how her fiancé was shot to death in their church in Mindanao.
But, most all, I remember the deafening sounds of silence every time I return home.
RESPONSE
How can I be silent today? How can I not speak on behalf of those who suffer? How can I desert those that belong to the same body that I belong to and who desperately need the encouragement of my intervention?

A 19-year-old man on Saturday opened fire in a synagogue filled with hundreds of Jews celebrating the final hours of Passover. His hate-fueled act ended the life of Lori Gilbert Kaye—a woman dearly loved by her family and community. The bullets severed the finger of Rabbi Goldstein and wounded several others. The trauma, anguish, and terror will haunt the survivors.

The manifesto inked by the killer reveals the perverted ideologies that inspired his depraved actions. Jarringly, some of these anti-Semitic ideas can be found throughout our society. The problem is pure falsehood and lies about the Jewish people.

Throughout the Middle Ages, anti-Semitic hatred in Europe led to the destruction of synagogues, burning of holy books, execution of Jewish sages, and sometimes the elimination of entire Jewish communities. People based their hate on raw religious bigotry, charges of blood libel (claims that Jewish religious observance involves drinking the blood of non-Jewish children), and assigning blame for deadly epidemics on the poising of wells by Jewish neighbors.

Jews in Eastern Europe faced centuries of oppression. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the municipal government in Kyiv, Ukraine, forced Jews to live separated from the rest of the city. Likewise, as the Russian Empire gained Jewish population through territorial acquisitions, these communities endured a second-class status. For instance, in 1791, Catherine II decreed that Jews could only live in certain regions of Russian territory.
In the 1880s, legislation enacted under Czar Alexander III targeted Jews with significant restrictions on their right to get an education and conduct their finances and business. During this period, a widespread persecution of Russian Jewry occurred in the form of pogroms in more than 100 communities.

Things weren’t much better for Jews in other parts of Europe. In the late 1400s, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain sought to force Jews to convert, and many who resisted were forced to flee. Throughout the 1500s, other forced conversion attempts occurred, particularly across modern-day Germany.

With the Age of Enlightenment, things improved in Europe. Jewish people shared in a relative abundance of opportunity across much of Europe. But with their success came more sophisticated forms of anti-Semitism—allegations of dual loyalty and conspiratorial myths that Jews controlled the levers of government through sly financial schemes.

Leading up to World War II, Adolf Hitler whipped up fury against the Jewish people by accusing them of treachery and blaming Jewish influence for societal decay and economic problems. This, of course, led to the Holocaust.

These same sentiments fester today, and the manifesto drafted by the monster responsible for the killing this past weekend echoes the anti-Semitism grounded in religious bigotry of ages past, along with the baseless accusations that were so common.

Symptomatic of the resurgence of anti-Semitism was The New York Times cartoon by Portuguese cartoonist António Moreira Antunes, published on Thursday of last week. The cartoon pictures Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a dog on a leash leading a blind President Donald Trump. In addition, a Star of David dangles from the dog’s neck while a kippah (signifying the “fear of heaven” in Judaism) rests on Trump’s head.
The apology for this blatantly anti-Semitic cartoon hardly seemed credible, given another cartoon by a Norwegian artist that the Times published days later. This one depicted the prime minister coming down Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments using a selfie stick.
Roar Hagen, a Norwegian cartoonist, released a nearly identical cartoon of Netanyahu leading Trump—each carrying one tablet of the Ten Commandments—in a journey down from the Golan Heights. The United States recognized Israeli sovereignty in the Golan Heights just weeks ago.
These are no mere critiques of the Israeli government, the Israeli prime minister, or the president of the United States. These cartoons depict Jews as a sly minority manipulating the world in a quest for domination.

How is this different in substance to the Nazi Germany periodical Lustige Blätter in 1940 picturing “the Jew” leading British Prime Minister Winston Churchill by the hand atop the globe? “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” published in 1903, once spread these myths. A mainstream media outlet now chooses to normalize these ideas for mass consumption.

Make no mistake: The “anti-Zionism” of the 21st century is but a manifestation of anti-Semitism. It singles out the 15 million Jewish people alive today (just 0.2% of the world’s population) and denies them the right to a nation in their ancestral homeland, while accusing “the Jew” of “hypnotizing” the world.

Sadly, our nation’s institutions are failing to sufficiently counter this hate. Congress has struggled to condemn with specificity the blatant anti-Semitic statements from freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who claimed Israel “hypnotized the world” and suggested Jewish Americans unduly influence politicians through their wealth.
Leaders of the Women’s March and other organizations embrace those with a history of anti-Semitic rhetoric—people such as Louis Farrakhan, who says the “powerful Jews are my enemy” and that he “has pulled the cover off of that Satanic Jew and I’m here to say your time is up, your world is through.”

Americans are growing disturbingly ignorant of recent atrocities against the Jewish people. In a recent poll, two-thirds of millennials were unfamiliar with the Auschwitz concentration camps where Nazis exterminated more than 1 million Jews, out of the more than 6 million who perished in the Holocaust. Moreover, college campuses provide a safe quarter for the unlawful behavior of the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement—a movement rooted in anti-Semitism.

The answer to such hate in a free society is not to muzzle speech—even hate speech. For the power to suppress speech, once obtained, may ultimately be wielded against those who hold viewpoints the state disapproves of.
Nor is the solution to deny law-abiding citizens their fundamental human right of self-defense, a road demonstrably proven over the centuries to heighten the risk of tyranny, plunder, or mayhem.

No. The solution is far more complex, one which requires action on the part of all us. People of goodwill must boldly condemn those promoting this hate. Parents must better equip the next generation with a grounding in history in order to inoculate youth from philosophical poison that seeks to corrupt their minds and destroy their hearts. Educators must dispel the myths. Political parties must deny those engaged in the traffic of anti-Semitic tropes a place in leadership, and donors must withhold funds from those politicians.

Each of us bears a unique responsibility to combat hateful lies with truth. Only light dispels the darkness.

#2658 (5/1) " 'Easter Worshippers' and 'non-Muslims'? - No, the Victims were Christians"

" 'EASTER WORSHIPPERS' AND 'NON-MUSLIM' ? -NO, THE VICTIMS WERE CHRISTIANS" - by John Stonestreet and Roberto Rivera, Breakpoint.org, April 26, 2019; http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/04/breakpoint-easter-worshippers-and-non-muslims/ [AS I SEE IT: As this article points out, two people who have stated they are Christians - former President Obama and Sec. Clinton - have again been reluctant to identify with Christians in incidents involving believers in Christ. Curious, don't you think? - Stan]
The death toll from the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka continued to climb all week. As of Thursday, the official count was 359 dead.

Reading and listening to reports about the attacks, it’s apparent that the number of victims in Sri Lanka isn’t the only uncertainty. Many people, especially politicians and media outlets, seem to be having trouble deciding how to identify the victims. I don’t mean individual names. I mean identifying what the large majority of victims had in common besides being Sri Lankan: They were Christians.

The default identifier by left-leaning politicians on Twitter was “Easter worshippers.” Seeing a phrase that hardly anyone every uses repeated by so many was, well, just weird. In fact, when I first saw the trending “Easter worshippers” controversy blow up on Twitter, I wondered aloud if this was a redo of the made-up controversy over Starbuck’s red cups at Christmas from a few years ago. Like then, I wondered if a few isolated examples were being blown out of proportion.

I don’t know who originally decided to use the expression “Easter worshipper,” but it definitely caught on. So much so that it almost looks like there must have been a memo somewhere advising people to use the expression instead of calling the victims “Christians.”

President Obama tweeted “The attacks on tourists and Easter worshippers in Sri Lanka are an attack on humanity.” Leaving aside the fact that Christians, not “humanity” writ large, were the ones attacked, it’s still an odd choice of words.
Even odder was Secretary Hillary Clinton’s response: “On this holy weekend for many faiths, we must stand united against hatred and violence. I’m praying for everyone affected by today’s horrific attacks on Easter worshippers and travelers in Sri Lanka.”

“Holy weekend for many faiths?” OK, Jews celebrated Passover on Saturday, but as the New York Times podcast “The Daily” pointed out from the start, the group behind the attacks targeted Catholic churches and attacked on Easter Sunday, which is holy to only one faith: Christianity. But even they struggled to identify the victims as Christians, preferring instead to call them “non-Muslims” on a number of occasions. And more than one NPR program I heard described how the rampant anti-Muslim environment of Sri Lanka contributed to the attacks.

Even if we dismiss the odd victim nomenclature as an anomaly, many commentators talked as if it were the buildings instead of the people inside them, and their beliefs, that were the terrorists’ target. This seeming denial or at least ignoring the fact that victims were targeted because they were Christians is so odd that it prompts the question “Why?”

As Ross Douthat of the New York Times helpfully explained, at least part of the answer is that many Western commentators have trouble seeing Christianity and Christians as anything but privileged. However true or not that may be of Western Christians—and now is not the time to debate that—the events in Sri Lanka are, to paraphrase the opening line of Rick Warren’s “The Purpose-Driven Life,” not about us.
It’s about, as Douthat put it, “Christians like the murdered first communicants in Sri Lanka, or the jailed pastors in China, or the Coptic martyrs of North Africa, or any of the millions of non-Western Christians who live under constant threat of persecution.”

The reluctance to call them “Christians” trivializes their suffering; obviously, not in God’s sight or in ours, but in the eyes of the non-Christian world. It’s as if they died because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, like someone who gets run over by a bus while crossing the street.Whatever gripes you have with American Christians, in much of the world Christians “live under the constant threat of persecution” and, as we saw this past Sunday, even death. Why? Because they are Christians.

As I’ve said before, the failure to do more to protect them is a disgrace. And failing to call them by their proper name, “Christians,” adds gratuitous insult to already-grievous injury.
