#419 (1/22) - Roe v. Wade: The Rest of the Story, Voices ...

URGENT CALL for PRAYER AND ACTION - UPDATE: American Pastor Saeed's sham trial in Iran began on Monday. Iran claims that his conversion to Christianity and work in house churches politically undermines the Islamic Republic. His Iranian attorney, who had less than 24 hours to prepare, strongly argued that Pastor Saeed's faith did not threaten Iran's national security. This was Pastor Saeed's only day to present a defense, and his father was the only family member allowed at trial. The trial against him may continue, and a sentence, which could be long-term imprisonment or even death, is expected next week. The U.S. State Department's response has been abysmal; it has failed to demand this American citizen's release. There is still time to speak out and call for international pressure on Iran. We must not be silent. Please keep this in PRAYER and SIGN THE PETITION with almost 200,000 others to ask for his release > http://aclj.org/iran/save-american-pastor-iranian-abuse-imprisonment

A SPECIAL NOTE: TODAY marks the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that spearheaded the legalizaion of the abortion of the unborn in America. I am in the midst of a 40 day period of prayer and (limited) fasting to honor the memory of the over 55 million ! unborn that have been murdered and the tens of millions of their mothers, fathers, and siblings who have been victimized by this great American Holocaust.

PLEASE PRAY: 1.) For the girls/women each day contemplating an abortion; the abortionists and their staff; the crisis pregnancy centers seeking to serve the women facing unplanned pregnancies. 2)  For the passage of even more state laws that will effectively help to limit the number of abortions being performed. 3.)The defunding of Planned Parenthood that performs over 300,000 abortions (about 1/3 the toal) for profit and still receives almost 1/2 billion dollars in federal tax dollars. 4.) That one day America might finally pass a constitutional amendment promoting the Sanctity of Every Human Life - in effect oulawing both abortion and euthanasia. 5) For churches/Christians being pro-life- not just claiming to be but demonstrating it conclusively by their actiions.

How many people know that the infamous January 22, 1973, decision of Roe v. Wade, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 54 million pre-born babies, rests on a series of lies?

To begin with, all Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe”) wanted was an abortion. Her attorneys assured her they would get her one. They did not. They told her she should be allowed to abort because she was gang raped. This was not true. She was not raped; the attorneys simply used Norma to build their case.

Doe v. Bolton, the companion case that the Supreme Court announced on the same day as Roe, was also based on a lie. Doe allows for second and third trimester abortions and made it legal for this procedure to be done outside of a hospital—giving rise to the numerous abortion clinics throughout the United States. Sandra Cano (who signed an affidavit as “Mary Doe”) was a poor, pregnant woman seeking a divorce and the return of her two children, who were in foster care. But Sandra Cano never wanted an abortion and never had an abortion.

Both Norma McCorvey (“Roe”) and Sandra Cano (“Doe”) are now pro-life. They are upset at what was done in their names and have even challenged these decisions—to no avail. Because of these infamous Supreme Court decisions—based on lies—abortion on demand is still the law of the land.

The Voices of Women Bring Victories for Life, Truth In Action Ministries, Jan. 1, 2012  http://www.truthimpact.me/index.php/2013/01/abortion-voices-of-women/?utm_source=Impact+e-Newsletter&utm_campaign=96d3f2a4b3-Impact_Newsletter_1_11_2012&utm_medium=email

Post-abortive women are now in the forefront of the fight to end abortion. Operation Outcry, a project of the Justice Foundation, collects the sworn testimonies of women about the harmful and tragic effects of their abortions. These declarations are impacting court decisions on abortion law. Four major pro-life victories can be attributed, in part, to the declarations of post-abortive women that were submitted in “friend of the Court” legal briefs:
  • The Supreme Court upheld the federal ban on partial-birth abortion in Gonzales v. Carhart;
  • The U.S. 5th Circuit Court upheld the Texas Sonogram Law, which gives a woman the option to see a sonogram of her child before making a decision to abort;
  • The U.S. 8th Circuit Court upheld South Dakota’s statute requiring abortionists to tell a woman that abortion will terminate the life of a separate, living human being;
  • The U.S. 8th Circuit Court also upheld a South Dakota statute requiring abortionists to tell women that abortion exposes them to increased risk for suicide.
To date, over 5,000 declarations have been collected. If you know someone harmed by abortion, urge her to fill out a declaration at www.operationoutcry.org.

"Forgiven … for His Glory; ''  by http://www.restoringthevalueoflife.org/index.php/2013/01/forgiven-for-his-glory/#
“…Christ Jesus came in to the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.  But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.”  1 Timothy 1:15-16 (ESV)
As a woman who chose abortion for two of her children, I can relate to Paul who assumes he must be the foremost of sinners.  Another translation says the “worst” of sinners.  This is not a label, but a declaration, “If God can save me, then there is hope for everyone!”   It was for this reason Christ came, to save sinners.  Not bound by time, Christ’s death on the cross paid the penalty for my sins past, present, and future.  In other words, Christ knew before I was even born that I would one day choose abortion, not once, but twice.  His shed blood cleansed me from all unrighteousness.   Amazing love, how can it be that Christ, my King, would die for me!

In awe of this Jesus who loves me even unto death, I love much, because I have been forgiven much.  Not unlike the forgiven woman described in Luke 7 who had lived a very sinful lifestyle, until she was touched by the Master, I too have been transformed. My life now is His, to be used for His purposes, and for His glory.

"Graphic Autopsy Images Released of Woman Dying From Legal Abortion" - by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 1/9/13 http://www.lifenews.com/2013/01/09/graphic-autopsy-images-released-of-woman-dying-from-legal-abortion/

[NOTE: The images you will find at the link listed here ARE graphic but I don't believe it is necessary to view them and so I will not show them here. However, this story does serve to point out that women do place THEMSELVES in harms way when they get an abortion and that it IS a surgical proceedure that CAN go very wrong. It is for THAT reason I am posting the story here. - Stan]

A pro-life group has released the graphic images today of a woman who was killed in a botched legal abortion. The group says they are some of the first images ever seen publicly of a woman who was brutalized by an abortion that claimed her life.

When 18-year-old Marla Cardamone was killed having an abortion at a Pennsylvania hospital, her mother, Deborah, vowed that she would never let her daughter be forgotten. Then, late last year, she approached the pro-life group Life Dynamics and asked the group’s president Mark Crutcher to help her show the public the risks women face when they submit to abortions.
Today, Life Dynamics is releasing a new brochure revealing what happened to Marla and her unborn son, including ghastly photos from Marla’s autopsy. The organization has also created a new website SafeandLegal.com that features the images and more information on how botched legal abortions kill and injure women.

“The pro-life movement has never had images to illustrate the unimaginable brutality and ugliness of women being killed in America’s “Safe and Legal” abortion clinics.  But those days are over,” Crutcher told LifeNews. “We are going to show America what it looks like when women climb onto a table in one of these places and end up on an autopsy table a few hours later.”

“These images are a powerful new weapon unlike anything the pro-life movement has ever had before.  Because of Deborah’s courage, we finally have the ability to expose one of the pro-choice lobby’s dirtiest little secrets,” Crutcher continued. “And that is exactly what Life Dynamics is committed to doing.  Starting today, we are sending a clear and unmistakable message to Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry that they will no longer be allowed to kill the Marla Cardamones of this world and then just walk away from them like they never existed.”

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, which is co-sponsoring this project along with Operation Rescue and Life Dynamics, also talked about the new images. He said, in 1996 that then-President Bill Clinton famously said he would like to see abortion “safe, legal and rare.” Seventeen years later, abortion remains legal. It kills more than a million unborn babies a year, so it is certainly not rare. And as a new project called “Safe & Legal” demonstrates, abortion is not safe for women, he continued. “We are bringing graphic visuals to the truth that abortion harms women,” he told LifeNews.

“I am grateful to Marla’s mom, Deborah, and her husband for their full support of this project and their permission to use these photos,” said Fr. Pavone. “As they know, this project isn’t just about Marla; it’s about the countless women Marla represents, who are killed by abortion without the world ever knowing.”

40 Years of Legalized Abortion
40 Years of Legalized Abortion — Is a Culture for Life Now Possible?,

[Note: Below, you will read the story of how the pro-life movement has made great strides over the 40 years of Roe v. Wade. Not only do polls show that the majority of Americans now want limits on abortion, but even the liberal-learning Time magazine - in their cover story the other week - had to acknowledge the gains that have been made. We who are pro-life need to take encouragement but not lessen our efforts to make abortion a true rarity in America. (Note the excerpt from the second article noted afterward.) May our light continue to push back the darkness of the culture of death in America. - Stan]

Who could have known the devastating impact that the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Roe v.  Wade and its companion case, Doe v. Bolton, would have on America 40 years down the road?  We stand today in the aftermath — over 54 million babies have never had the opportunity to pursue life in this nation founded on principles meant to protect their lives.

Who could have known that we would have millions in our communities, and even in our churches, who have been harmed physically, emotionally, and spiritually by abortion? Millions who have never received healing because they have been told by society that their pain is not real?  Many women were told, at the time of their decisions to abort, that they were not carrying a baby, but, instead, a blob of tissue that could easily be discarded in order for their lives to return to “normal.”  Now they know those were lies, but it is too late. The abortion industry has waged a war on women, children, and families with deception as its tool of choice.

What an awesome responsibility we have to intervene with truth, to pass on a legacy of life to the next generation so that, as Psalm 102:18b says, “a people yet unborn may praise the Lord” (rsv).
The generation that has lost one third of its siblings, classmates, and friends to abortion is leading the charge to expose the tactics of the abortion industry — heroines include Lila Rose, founder of Live Action, who, as a teen, began undercover, investigative journalism of the nation’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood.   Through Live Action’s work, we are learning of the corruption and lawlessness endemic to the business of killing unborn children.  Undercover videos have exposed racism, the cover up of sexual abuse, medical misinformation, and other examples of malfeasance at Planned Parenthood.

Charmaine Yoest, President of Americans United for Life (AUL), is exposing the abuse of taxpayer dollars to fund the abortion industry giant at the enormous price tag of one million dollars per day.  We have learned through AUL’s research that Planned Parenthood’s claim of “consistent quality patient care” is far from accurate.  Dangerous misuse of chemical abortions, misinformation on the risks inherent to late-term abortion, failure to protect minor girls from predators and traffickers, and reports of tragic deaths in its abortion clinics are all proof that Planned Parenthood does not protect those it claims to serve.

The story of former abortion clinic director Abby Johnson, and of other abortion clinic workers who have left the industry in disgust over the evil work performed behind clinic doors, add credence to ongoing investigations exposing the industry.

Through Operation Outcry and Silent No More, the voices of post-abortive women are reaching Congress and legal briefs, as “friends of the Court,” are convincing legislators and judges that abortion harms women. The fact is, 64 percent of women are coerced or forced to abort.  This flies in the face of the rhetoric of choice and gives credence to the claim that abortion is anti-woman.

Life heroes like David Bereit and Shawn Carney are leading 40 Days for Life campaigns to rally volunteers to pray in front of abortion clinics during a 40 day period, asking God to end abortion.  Prayer, fasting, and community outreach are saving literally thousands of babies, prompting abortion clinic workers to leave their jobs, and closing down abortion clinics — for good.

Kristan Hawkins, President of Students for Life, is preparing the next generation of pro-life leaders through high school and college campus outreaches — training efforts that have resulted in thousands of new recruits joining the battle for life.

Dr. Joe McIlhaney and Dr. Freda Bush of The Medical Institute for Sexual Health work tirelessly to insure that parents are equipped to speak candidly and truthfully with their children about sexual health, so they do not fall victim to the misinformation so prevalently taught in public school comprehensive sex education classes. Their work helps prevent teens from ever facing a decision to abort an unplanned pregnancy.

We are seeing the tide turn in favor of life. More Americans are listening to those who are telling the truth about this “industry of death.” Let’s pray the next 40 years will reveal a nation that honors God’s most precious gift — the gift of life!

[NOTE - This is a good commentary that, while noting pro-life advances over the years (as does the above article), it makes the following cautionary statement that I think we need to keep in mind. - Stan]
"...We haven’t won the culture just because people don’t “like” abortion. We’ve only won when it’s considered morally wrong. So wrong, in fact, that it’s intolerable in any case, like slavery. As long as killing of children in the womb is still the law of our land we cannot afford to stop talking about it, defending the pro-life position, aiding those found in unplanned pregnancies, and counseling those dealing with past abortions.''

''Planned Parenthood Sets Record for Abortions and Government Funding'' ;Sarah Torre, January 9, 2013 http://blog.heritage.org/2013/01/09/planned-parenthood-sets-record-for-abortions-and-government-funding/?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email

Planned Parenthood reported receiving record taxpayer funding in the last reporting year, while also performing a record number of abortions, according to the organization’s new annual report released this week.

The nation’s largest abortion provider maintained its infamous title, performing 333,964 abortions—a record for the organization that received 45 percent of its revenues from taxpayer-funded government sources during the 2011–2012 fiscal year. According to analysis by the Susan B. Anthony List, Planned Parenthood has performed almost 1 million abortions in the past three years alone.

Despite the organization’s prominence—performing roughly one out of every four abortions in America—Planned Parenthood has ridden the waves of taxpayer funding to millions of dollars in annual surpluses. Last year, like many before it, Planned Parenthood saw a very comfortable income, reporting excess revenues [profits] exceeding $87 million and net assets of more than $1.2 billion. In the face of large surpluses and increased abortions, supporters and activists are still quick to point to the provision of other services to justify continued and expanded federal funding of the organization.

But a closer look at Planned Parenthood’s own report and actions still point to a strong emphasis on abortion procedures. While Planned Parenthood affiliates performed a record number of abortions in 2011, the organization made only 2,300 adoption referrals and provided fewer than 30,000 prenatal services. Roughly 40 percent of the organization’s reported contraceptive services last year were the provision of more than 1.4 million emergency contraception kits, which many believe can cause an abortion in early pregnancy. To solidify its place as the top abortion provider, Planned Parenthood recently announced that all local affiliates would have to begin providing abortion services starting in 2013.

Despite the half-truths spread by leaders and supporters of Planned Parenthood—including President Obama during last year’s election—the organization does not and cannot provide mammograms. (It was over this fact, among other considerations, that leaders of the Susan G. Komen Foundation originally pulled grant funding from Planned Parenthood—before they were bullied back into supporting the abortion provider.)
Women can receive clinical breast exams at some Planned Parenthood affiliates, but women are referred to local health care providers for more comprehensive mammogram services. Planned Parenthood can use funds obtained from grant sources to pay for the referrals, but it acts merely as a go-between for women in need of screening. Moreover, as Alliance Defending Freedom’s (ADF) Casey Mattox explained following an ADF Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, no Planned Parenthood affiliate even holds the licenses necessary under federal law to perform mammograms.

If Planned Parenthood’s lackluster offering of breast health support and single-minded provision of abortion services isn’t enough to question the continual stream of federal tax dollars, accusations of fraud and the group’s apparent willingness to abet the sex trafficking of minor girls should at least raise scrutiny of the organization’s federal funding.

Late last week, Representative Marsha Blackburn (R–TN) introduced the “Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act,” which would strip Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers of federal taxpayer support under Title X funding. There has been longstanding consensus that federal dollars should not be used to fund abortions. Policymakers looking for organizations capable of self-funding more of their activities and wishing to put limited federal tax dollars for women’s health to more efficient and effective use would do well to view Planned Parenthood’s subsidies with a critical eye.

A SPECIAL NOTE: TODAY marks 5 days before the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v.

CHALLENGE: If you have not already determined it, please CALL YOUR PASTOR and ask you that, as a pro-life church (which I trust yours describes itself), how will yuor church recognize Sanctity of Human Life Sunday NEXT SUNDAY, Jan. 20th, as will thousands of other pro-life churches in America. If he says he has no plans to do so, ask him why not. Please let me know what you learn.PLEASE PRAY: 1.) For the girls/women each day contemplating an abortion; the abortionists and their staff; the crisis pregnancy centers seeking to serve the women facing unplanned pregnancies.

"Obama’s Religious Freedom Proclamation," Amy Payne, January 17, 2013;
Did you know that yesterday [Jan. 16] was Religious Freedom Day in America? It didn’t get a lot of attention, since President Obama was busy signing executive orders, but he also put out a proclamation on religious freedom. “Because of the protections guaranteed by our Constitution, each of us has the right to practice our faith openly and as we choose,” the President wrote [1]. “As we observe Religious Freedom Day, let us remember the legacy of faith and independence we have inherited, and let us honor it by forever upholding our right to exercise our beliefs free from prejudice or persecution.”

That’s one heck of a proclamation from an Administration whose actions have attacked religious liberty for Americans. The best-known example is Obamacare’s Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate that employers pay for contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs in their health care plans. This has caused business owners to face excruciating decisions [2] between complying—and violating their consciences—or facing massive fines.

The sad fact is, under President Obama, Americans have been forced to fight for their religious liberty in the courts. More than 110 plaintiffs are fighting the HHS mandate, and that’s hardly the only religious liberty battle being waged. The Supreme Court [3] has already rebuked the Administration for its attacks on religious liberty—and it did so unanimously:
"The Administration argued in a recent Supreme Court case, Hosanna Tabor v. EEOC, that religious employers should not have the ability to maintain the integrity of their institutions through religious hiring practices. In an embarrassing incident for the Obama Administration, the Supreme Court dismissed the Department of Justice’s argument, unanimously ruling in favor of institutional religious liberty [4].''
Americans are battling at the state level as well. In Illinois, a court battle finally came to an end, upholding pharmacists’ [5] right to practice their profession in accordance with their beliefs. And the drive toward redefining marriage—now under consideration in the Supreme Court—has already begun to affect people who disagree [6] by interfering with their rights to practice their faith. Heritage’s Andrew Walker notes:
''As Heritage has pointed out, the redefinition of marriage [7] and expansive non-discrimination laws [8] will be used to marginalize those with dissenting viewpoints. In Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and Illinois, Catholic Charities and other religious social service agencies have been forced to shut down [9] adoption and foster care services for refusing to place children with same-sex couples."
These trends are disturbing, but they are hardly new in the scheme of history. As Jennifer Marshall, Heritage’s director of domestic policy studies, wrote in “Understanding American Liberty [10]”:
Authoritarian governments—whether religious or secular—have long sought to curb or even to extinguish religious liberty. On the other hand, the limited American government established by our Constitution respects the institutions of our civil society—including, especially, religious institutions. The American Founders believed that strong religious congregations and vibrant faith communities were essential to ordered liberty. As a result, Americans have long enjoyed the fullest religious liberty in the world, and we have reaped the benefits of a flourishing civil society rooted in that religious freedom.
Religious Freedom Day commemorates the anniversary of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom [11], written by Thomas Jefferson and passed by the state assembly in 1786. Jefferson wrote that “no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion.” [This is supposedly the same person who advocated the "separation of church and state.' - Not!]

Words that don’t match deeds from this President simply add insult to the many injuries his Administration has caused people of faith in the past four years.

URGENT CALL FOR PRAYER AND ACTION: American Pastor Saeed Abedini (32; who had been helping underground Christian churches) will face a trial in Iran for his Christian faith in just days. After sustaining painful beatings in Iran's brutal Evin Prison, he has been told that he "will hang" for his "faith in Jesus." [NOTE The following commentary (and the links to two other articles) is a further, Christian response to yesterday's post about the pastor being forced to step away from participating in the President's inauguration this past week.]
Inaugurating a New Era - A Benediction for Post-Christian America"-by: John Stonestreet,  January 16, 2013, http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/entry/13/21244

Inauguration day is fast approaching. But a different kind of inauguration has already taken place.

Last Friday on BreakPoint, I suggested that we must face the facts that we are now in a new era: the post-Christian America that Francis Schaeffer, Chuck Colson and many others predicted would come.
I was referring then to Hobby Lobby facing millions of dollars in fines for refusing to obey the HHS mandate.  If any further proof is needed, last weekend’s broo-ha-ha over who’s praying at the presidential inauguration is exactly that.

A rock-solid evangelical pastor who has mobilized thousands of young people to campaign against human trafficking was invited by the White House to give the benediction at the inauguration. But within hours, a small handful of homosexual activists hit the roof, because the same pastor, years prior, had the gall to say in a sermon that homosexual activity was sinful. Thoroughly tarred with the “hater,” “bigot,” and “anti-gay” labels, this pioneer for human rights, Pastor Louie Giglio of Passion City Church, respectfully stepped aside.
Whether Pastor Giglio did so proactively or was responding to heated pressure from the White House isn’t exactly clear.

One thing’s for sure, Giglio’s now oft-quoted sermon on homosexuality was prophetic. He warned that the [homosexual] movement would do anything necessary to make sure the homosexual lifestyle becomes accepted as a norm in our society and is given full standing as any other lifestyle.
And today, in the media, in popular culture, in politics, it has that full standing.

And its acceptance was lightning quick. Remember, just four years ago another evangelical pastor, Rick Warren—who has made his position on homosexual behavior also quite clear—prayed at Barack Obama’s first inauguration.

So today, we find ourselves in a situation where, as Al Mohler wrote, historical, biblical Christianity is clearly “out of bounds.” The question is, what now? There’s no doubt, as my friend Gabe Lyons blogged, that Giglio was the victim of bullying by homosexual activists. He called on the President to remind them that freedom of conscience—I would say freedom of religion—is the first right of every American.

Over at the CNN belief blog, Matt Anderson suggested that conservative Christians should embrace a certain dispassion when it comes to politics. His specifics seemed a bit muddled to me, but he rightly said that when we suffer injustice, we ought not display panic-driven anger as if our future depends on political acceptance.

Owen Strachan’s response, which I’m fully on board with, was that being truly “gospel-centered” includes “grief and protest against sin and injustice.” Strachan writes that the Bible does not commend “a kind of imperturbably equanimity in light of suffering, persecution, and the usurpation of our rights . . . The biblical leaders [like Paul in Acts] defended themselves vigorously, knowing like Moses did that God himself was behind their call for justice.”

Pastor Giglio stepped aside to avoid any further controversy. He wrote to his church, “My greatest desire is that we not be distracted from the things we are focused on…seeing people in our city come to know Jesus, and speaking up for the last and least of these throughout the world.” And there’s no doubt he’ll do just that. But part of me wishes he had not stepped away from the inaugural benediction.

Despite controversy or recriminations, Christians must stay in the arena, engaged in public life. Our posture in the midst of these divisive issues is important, but so is our presence. It’s distracting, some say. The real task is to preach the Gospel. That’s missing a very important point, one that Owen Strachan states clearly: Christian teaching is not a barrier to the Christian gospel. The God who designed sexual wholeness is the same who designed redemption for all who find themselves broken, sexually or otherwise.

"The Giglio Smear: When Faith Is Called Bigotry" - Andrew T. Walker, January 12, 2013, http://blog.heritage.org/2013/01/12/the-giglio-smear-when-faith-is-called-bigotry/
Pastor Louie Giglio, whose Passion Movement has raised millions of dollars toward ending sex trafficking, removed himself from offering the benediction at President Obama’s second inauguration after previous statements on biblical sexual ethics came to light.

On January 9, the liberal political blog Think Progress brought attention to a sermon from the 1990s in which Giglio talked about biblical teaching on sexual ethics, including homosexuality, that are shared by millions of other evangelical Christians. The New York Times reported that Giglio’s removal originated with officials in the Obama Administration.

Giglio, pastor of Atlanta’s Passion City Church, is a popular speaker and author whose ministry has been dedicated to renewing Christianity among America’s youth and bringing attention to issues of social injustice. But as of this week, Giglio was labeled an “anti-gay bigot” and vilified on numerous websites, subjected to slurs for simply for holding to the tenets of his faith. Jonathan Capehart, a columnist at The Washington Post, wrote that “it is our right not to have an unrepentant bigot be given such a high honor on Inauguration Day.”

Presidents are free to invite (or disinvite) whomever they choose to participate in inaugural festivities, but the outpouring of such invectives against Giglio echoes a troubling trend of hostility toward those who have religious objections to same-sex marriage. As Heritage’s Tom Messner has written, “As this ideology seeps into the culture, belief in marriage as the union of husband and wife will likely come to be viewed as an unacceptable form of discrimination that should be purged from society through legal, cultural, and economic pressure.”

Theologian Albert Mohler of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary writes:
"The Presidential Inaugural Committee and the White House have now declared historic, biblical Christianity to be out of bounds, casting it off the inaugural program as an embarrassment. By its newly articulated standard, any preacher who holds to the faith of the church for the last 2,000 years is persona non grata. By this standard, no Roman Catholic prelate or priest can participate in the ceremony. No Evangelical who holds to biblical orthodoxy is welcome. The vast majority of Christians around the world have been disinvited. Mormons and the rabbis of Orthodox Judaism are out. Any Muslim imam who could walk freely in Cairo would be denied a place on the inaugural program. Billy Graham, who participated in at least 10 presidential inaugurations is welcome no more. Rick Warren, who incited a similar controversy when he prayed at President Obama’s first inauguration, is way out of bounds. In the span of just four years, the rules are fully changed."
As Heritage has pointed out, the redefinition of marriage and expansive non-discrimination laws will be used to marginalize those with dissenting viewpoints. In Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and Illinois, Catholic Charities and other religious social service agencies have been forced to shut down adoption and foster care services for refusing to place children with same-sex couples. A New Mexico photographer was punished for declining, for religious reasons, to photograph a same-sex commitment ceremony. As Illinois considers its same-sex marriage bill, supporters of traditional marriage have voiced concerns about its religious liberty implications.

As the Supreme Court considers cases involving the federal Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8 and states consider redefining marriage, citizens should carefully consider what it means for the future of free speech and religious liberty.
