"Hands Up! Don’t Abort!" - Mike Adams | Aug 25, 2014; http://townhall.com/columnists/mikeadams/2014/08/25/hands-up-dont-abort-n1882142/page/full

Something is just not right with me. In fact, I’m downright rude. I have a tendency to crash protests even though no one invited me. It happened when I donned a burka back in 2003 disguising myself as an Iraqi woman in order to infiltrate a campus protest against the War in Iraq. It happened again in 2009 when I joined a protest against myself at UMASS-Amherst. It happened yet again last Saturday night when I went to Ferguson and protested against the man while holding a sign saying “Hands up, Don’t Shoot!” I learned a lot that night. So today I’m writing a column to share it with my readers.

I only spoke with a few protestors in Ferguson. And I only asked them a few questions. But the responses were still revealing. In fact, they revealed two undeniable truths that some readers could have gleaned from extensive media coverage of the protests:

1. Ferguson protestors are bored and in need of a cause. I struck up a conversation with a middle-aged black woman who brought a longhaired Chihuahua to the protest. Her dog seemed to like me. That’s how we struck up a conversation. At one point in that conversation she told me I was making history by participating in the protests. She had been protesting for eight consecutive days. She added that we needed to go back to the protest era of the 1960s. I silently thought it would be nice to go back to a time when people didn’t terrorize their own neighbors in the name of civil rights.

Another protestor who we will call Ron (because that’s his name) said that we needed to bring attention to all the hidden injustices taking place in black neighborhoods. He added, “This kind of thing happens every day.” When I pressed him on whether unarmed black men were being shot every day, he gave me some clarification. He noted that black men were often pulled over for no reason. In fact, it had once happened to him. Ron was probably in his mid-thirties and had been living in that neighborhood his whole life.

When you talk to these protestors, you get the sense that they are sincerely angry and in need of some way of redressing their grievances. It’s just that they have difficulty articulating exactly what those grievances are.

2. Any black civil rights cause must focus on what whites have done to black in the past, not on what blacks are doing to other blacks right now.

Ron wasn’t able to name any other examples (besides Michael Brown) of unarmed black men being shot in his neighborhood. But he did explain why it was so important. According to Ron, black people are doing all kinds of bad things to each other on a daily basis. Given that pressure, the black community just can’t handle the extra pressure of a white cop shooting a black kid. So the question for Ron is pretty obvious. If you are looking for something to protest, which one will it be; a) the bad things blacks do to each other every day, or b) the one shooting of an unarmed innocent black man (by a bad white man) you can point to in a period of about thirty years of living in the neighborhood. Of course, we all know the answer. It is “b.” It’s the only option for Ron because it’s the only option black culture allows.

Fortunately, there is a solution for this dilemma. If the Ferguson protestors are bored and need a cause – and one that focuses on bad white people – I have one for them. It’s called abortion.

Blacks are only 12 percent of the population in America. But 36 percent of the babies aborted are black. That means that of the more than 3000 babies aborted per day in America over 1000 of them are black. To put things in historical perspective, doctors wearing white masks abort at least 7000 babies in a week. Klansmen wearing white hoods have lynched fewer blacks in the entire history of America.

Given that Planned Parenthood is right there in the hood, and that they were born (not pun intended) of the white-dominated eugenics movement, the solution is pretty simple. Stop committing uncivil wrongs against your own people in the name of civil rights. To put it bluntly, stop defecating in your own back yard. Join the pro-life movement instead. After all, the unborn are disproportionately black, always unarmed, and never guilty. Someone has to protect them from white doctors wielding lethal weapons.

"War on Christianity Still Alive and Well in America" - David Limbaugh | Aug 22, 2014; http://townhall.com/columnists/davidlimbaugh/2014/08/22/war-on-christianity-still-alive-and-well-in-america-n1881683/page/full

Many reject the notion that a good segment of our popular culture and of our political class is at war with Christianity. But this is a real war -- not a phony one, such as the left's manufactured "war on women."

This hostility toward Christianity is a global phenomenon. Radical Muslims are targeting, persecuting and, in many cases, slaughtering Christians in numerous countries around the world. But I want to talk about a softer form of hostility -- though nevertheless of serious concern -- that is occurring in the United States.

I filled an entire book with examples of discrimination against Christians in this country about a decade ago, and since then, there has been little or no abatement of this practice.

For example, a student in Dyer County, Tennessee, was suspended because she committed the unforgivable sin of saying "bless you" when a classmate sneezed. High-school senior Kendra Turner said her teacher told her such expressions are for church. Turner said, "She said that we're not going to have godly speaking in her class, and that's when I said we have a constitutional right." It was this objection and the student's being "disruptive and aggressive" that reportedly led to her suspension by an administrator.Well, it seems to me that the disruption, aggressiveness and inappropriate behavior came from the teacher, not from Turner. Indeed, Turner's youth pastor, Becky Winegardner, implied that this was about not insubordination but rather the teacher's apparent hostility toward faith. "There were several students that were talking about this particular faculty member there that was very demeaning to them in regard to their faith," said Winegardner.

The secular left, the humanists, the anti-theists and sometimes the militant homosexual lobby aggressively challenge Christian expression in the public square, arguing that our Constitution mandates a strict separation of church and state. That is grossly wrong and leads to much confusion and sloppy thinking on the issue.

The First Amendment contains two religion clauses -- the free exercise clause, which guarantees that we may freely exercise our religion, and the establishment clause, which prohibits the federal government from establishing a national religion or national church. Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to the Danbury Baptists, used the expression "wall of separation between Church & State," but that language is not in the Constitution. The establishment clause is the provision that secularists and activist courts have used to argue the Constitution dictates this separation. But it was never intended to and, though courts have dramatically expanded it beyond the framers' intent, still does not require any such strict separation.

Courts have expanded it to prohibit all kinds of religious expression in state-funded venues, on the grounds that if religious expression occurs in such places, the government -- state or federal -- is indirectly funding or supporting a particular religion and this constitutes an establishment of religion. This strained interpretation is absurd in light of the purpose of the clause, to prevent the establishment of a national church. But the Turner story takes it beyond absurdity. It's ludicrous enough to say the federal or state government is establishing a national religion when a publicly funded official (e.g., a teacher) promotes a particular religion, but this was a student, not a teacher, and this was a reflexive blessing, not an act of proselytizing.

Please understand: The purpose of both religion clauses was to promote religious liberty. That is abundantly obvious with the free exercise clause, but it should be just as clear with the establishment clause. The only reason our framers would have prevented the establishment of a national religion is to protect religious liberty. But courts have twisted the establishment clause into a weapon against religious liberty. To argue that blessing a sneezing classmate constitutes the government's establishing or even supporting a particular religion is surreal.

Further examples abound -- enough to fill up another book. In the name of protecting religious liberty (for Christians, anyway), the secular left, at every turn, is choking and smothering it.

But it's not just these constitutional issues that should concern us. There is an increasing hostility toward Christians and Christianity in our culture, the liberal media, Hollywood and our universities.

For the record, if the secularists were concerned about the government's taking sides on such questions, they would also object to the rampant secularization of the curricula in schools and universities, including the demonization of our Christian heritage. They would be concerned about the preferential treatment often given to Islam. But it's not the Constitution these people are fighting for; it's Christianity that they are fighting against.

The "tolerant" left has zero tolerance for Christianity, and all Christians and all lovers of liberty would be well advised to be vigilant against this societal assault on Christianity that uses the Constitution as an excuse.

To those Christians who casually dismiss all this as beneath them because they want to focus on evangelizing and not politics, please understand that your ability to evangelize would evaporate in the absence of political freedoms. So if you want to be removed from the fight, I won't object, but please don't condemn those who willingly engage in this struggle so that you can continue to focus on evangelism.

"Media: Dying of Thirst is Excruciating Agony, Except if It’s Someone Like Terri Schiavo" - by Wesley J. Smith | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 8/11/14; http://www.lifenews.com/2014/08/11/media-dying-of-thirst-is-excruciating-agony-except-if-its-someone-like-terri-schiavo/

Health writer Larry Bernstein of the Washington Post has written an excruciating column about how awful and painful it is to die by thirst. The article laments–as any civilized person would–the potential mass deaths by dehydration of the Yazidi at the hand of the butchers of ISIS in Iraq.

Dying of dehydration is an awful death. From the piece:

I’m not about to start ranking the horrors visited on the human body this summer, from Ebola in West Africa to bombs and bullets in Gaza and Israel. But thousands of particularly excruciating deaths may soon be added to the list by the Sunni extremists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, the terrorist group that is sweeping through parts of Iraq and establishing its own state. As this barbarism continues.

Bernstein did some research: I asked Jeffrey Berns, president-elect of the National Kidney Foundation and a nephrologist at the University of Pennsylvania, what these children may be going through.“Thirst, as you probably know, is one of the most potent drives for behavior we have. It may be the most potent we have, more than even hunger,” he said. “People are going to be miserable.”

The body is about 60 percent water, and under normal conditions, he said…If it’s not replaced over time and dehydration becomes severe, cells throughout the body will begin to shrink as water moves out of them and into the blood stream, part of the body’s efforts to keep the organs in fluid. “All the cells will shrink,” he said, “but the ones that count are the brain cells. They don’t operate normally when they’re’ shrinking.”

Changes in mental status will follow, including confusion and ultimately coma, he said. As the brain becomes smaller, it takes up less room in the skull and blood vessels connecting it to the inside of the cranium can pull away and rupture. Without water, blood volume will decline and all the organs will start to fail, he said. Kidney failure will soon lead to disastrous consequences and ultimately death as blood volume continues to fall and waste products that should be eliminated from the body remain.

Yes, an awful, horrific death. Except when inflicted on people like Terri Schiavo? That can’t be right.
terrischiavo
This is a biological process–yet conscious and unconscious disabled and elderly alike are made to die of thirst throughout the country and much of the Western world through removal of tube-supplied sustenance. How many times have we seen advocates for removing feeding tubes from the cognitively disabled sooooothingly assure us it is a peaceful, painless way to die? From a 2005 Chicago Tribune story about the pending death of Schiavo:

One of the main rationales of religious advocates and lawmakers seeking to keep Terri Schiavo alive through a feeding tube has been that removing her only source of nutrition and liquid would be cruel, leading to a “horrible and painful death,” in the words of one activist.

But many of the doctors and nurses who witness the consequences of removing such treatment from patients say withholding nourishment is a common—and largely painless—way of letting nature take its course for ill patients. They say many people near death actually choose to have their feeding tubes removed, which typically leads to a calm, peaceful death.

Yes, IF PEOPLE ARE ON THE VERGE OF DEATH BY CANCER or some other disease. In those cases, the death is not from thirst! But the people we are discussing here are not dying other than having their water and food taken away. That’s a huge difference. The same process described in Bernstein’s piece happens to them.

Oh, and notice what Berns said about the size of the brain after dehydration: Terri’s shrunken brain was touted as proof she could feel nothing. Remember?

People in cognitively disabled conditions may not be able to cry out and beg for food–although I know of at least one case where that happened–because they don’t have the ability. But that doesn’t mean on the inside, unless given powerful drugs–Terri Schiavo wasn’t given that courtesy–they aren’t feeling the same pain as those poor people on the Iraq mountain.

And now Compassion and Choices and other assisted suicide organizations push suicide by thirst and starvation (VSED). From the  book, “Voluntary Stop Eating and Drinking: Some call us because they feel overwhelmed by the symptoms of chronic and progressive illnesses that fill their days with misery and suffering. There are also those who may not be seriously ill but are simply “done.” After eight or nine decades of life, they want information about ways to gently slip away in a peaceful and dignified manner. Shameful.

Add to that advocacy now for VSED-by-proxy that would force nursing homes to withhold oral sustenance to Alzheimer’s patients who asked to be starved and dehydrated to death in an advance directive–even if they willingly drink water and juices and eat food.

The elderly, the profoundly disabled, babies born with Down syndrome that have intestinal blockage, etc. are not a different species. They are people. Making them die of thirst is agonizing too. Those who push these kinds of deaths as merely “medical ethics:” Own it!

"Why the Average Student Loan Debt Just Keeps Rising" - Lindsey Burke/ August 19, 2014 / http://dailysignal.com/2014/08/19/average-student-loan-debt-just-keeps-rising/

College students heading back for the fall semester of college buy textbooks for the semester. (Photo: Eric Paul Zamora/The Fresno Bee/Newscom)
New student orientations are kicking off at colleges across the country, and parents are busy buying mini fridges and dorm-sized bed sheets. As students head off this fall, many will also carry with them record-high levels of student loan debt.

This year, outstanding student loan balances reached an all-time high of $1.12 trillion – an increase of $124 billion since last year, according to the New York Federal Reserve. Nearly 11 percent of aggregate student loan debt was at least 90 days delinquent or in default, as Politico reported last week

College graduates now leave school with an average of $26,500 in student loan debt – $4,600 more than the average student graduated with in 2001. Federal subsidies now account for 71 percent of all student aid. According to the College Board, over the past 10 years, the number of students borrowing through federal student loans increased by 69 percent.

Chart: How Student Loan Debt Has Increased in Recent Years
Increases in debt have been driven by increases in college costs. In the last 30 years, inflation-adjusted tuition and fees at private colleges increased by 153 percent. Tuition and fees at public universities for in-state students increased 231 percent.

College costs have risen more than health care costs—by some estimates, twice as much—and faster than increases in the price of food. State-level spending has increased 88 percent since 1999.
Screen Shot 2014-08-20 at 9.46.47 AM
Increases in tuition and fees over the past 30 years suggest that growth in federal subsidies such as loans and grants has done little to mitigate the college cost problem. And all of this spending and debt is not producing adequate outcomes:

* The 6-year college graduation rate stands at 59 percent. Just 41 percent of undergraduates complete college within 4 years.

* According to the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, 48 percent of working college graduates held jobs that did not require a college degree in 2010. Thirty-seven percent were in jobs that only required a high school diploma.

Why is college so expensive? Maybe it’s the administrative bloat. As University of Arkansas professor Jay P. Greene found, “Between1993 and 2007, the number of full-time administrators per 100 students at America’s leading universities grew by 39 percent, while the number of employees engaged in teaching, research or service only grew by 18 percent.” Student enrollment, by contrast, grew just 15 percent over the same time period.

Perhaps it’s all the college football coaches making more than $1 million. Here’s a handy list of the top ten highest paid college football coaches, compiled by USA Today. Alabama’s Nick Saban tops the list, taking home over $5.5 million in 2013.[http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1840036-usa-today-reveals-college-football-head-coaches-salaries-for-every-fbs-school]

The most likely culprit, however, is the open spigot of federal student aid that has enabled such profligacy. According to a new report from the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, federal student aid “contributes to skyrocketing costs, finances a wasteful academic arms race, weakens academic standards, lowers educational opportunity, and worsens the underemployment/overinvestment problem.”

Congress has long tried to help students afford a college education. It has cut interest rates on federal student loans, vastly expanded federal lending and lifted caps on borrowing. In the 1980s, it even let parents borrow directly from the feds — through the Parent PLUS program — to pay for their children’s college. Each effort has only enabled universities to continue to raise tuition.

Innovative approaches to limiting federal intervention in higher education through accreditation reform hold the promise of dramatically reducing college costs. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., have put forward proposals that would do just that. By enabling states to take the lead on accreditation, the HERO Act creates a promising way to drive down costs and increase customization and opportunity in higher education.[This Legislation Would Allow Companies to Offer Credentialed College Courses/ Lindsey Burke / May 09, 014 http://dailysignal.com/2014/05/09/legislation-allow-companies-offer-credentialed-college-courses/]

"The Media and the Mob" - Thomas Sowell | Aug 20, 2014;

http://townhall.com/columnists/thomassowell/2014/08/20/untitled-n1881093/page/full

Those of us who admit that we were not there, and do not know what happened when Michael Brown was shot by a policeman in Ferguson, Missouri, seem to be in the minority.

We all know what has happened since then -- and it has been a complete disgrace by politicians, the media and mobs of rioters and looters. Despite all the people who act as if they know exactly what happened, nevertheless when the full facts come out, that can change everything. This is why we have courts of law, instead of relying on the media or mobs. But politics is undermining law.

On the eve of a grand jury being convened to go through the facts and decide whether there should be a prosecution of the policeman in this case, Governor Jay Nixon of Missouri has gone on television to say that there should be a "vigorous prosecution." There was a time when elected officials avoided commenting on pending legal processes, so as not to bias those processes. But Governor Nixon apparently has no fear of poisoning the jury pool. The only alternative explanation is that this is exactly what he intends to do. It is a disgrace either way.

Race is the wild card in all this. The idea that you can tell who is innocent and who is guilty by the color of their skin is a notion that was tried out for generations, back in the days of the Jim Crow South. I thought we had finally rejected that kind of legalized lynch law. But apparently it has only been put under new management.

Television people who show the home of the policeman involved, and give his name and address -- knowing that he has already received death threats -- are truly setting a new low. They seem to be trying to make themselves judge, jury and executioner.

Then there are the inevitable bullet counters asking, "Why did he shoot him six times?" This is the kind of thing people say when they are satisfied with talking points, and see no need to stop and think seriously about a life and death question. If you are not going to be serious about life and death, when will you be serious? By what principle should someone decide how many shots should be fired? The bullet counters seldom, if ever, ask that question, much less try to answer it.

Since the only justifiable reason for shooting in the first place is self-protection, when should you stop shooting? Obviously when there is no more danger. But there is no magic number of shots that will tell you when you are out of danger. Even if all your shots hit, that doesn't mean anything if the other guy keeps coming and is still a danger. You can be killed by a wounded man.

Different witnesses give conflicting accounts of exactly what happened in the shooting of Michael Brown. That is one of the reasons why grand juries collect facts. But, if Michael Brown -- a 6 foot 4 inch, 300 pound man -- was still charging at the policeman, as some allege, there is no mystery why the cop kept shooting. But, if Michael Brown was surrendering, as others allege, then there was no reason to fire even one shot. But the number of shots tells us nothing.None of this is rocket science. Why bullet counters cannot be bothered to stop and think is a continuing mystery.

Among the other unthinking phrases repeated endlessly is "he shot an unarmed man." When does anyone know that someone is unarmed? Unless you frisk him, you don't know -- until, of course, after you have shot him. The only time I ever pointed a firearm at a human being, I had no idea whether he was armed or unarmed. To this day I don't know whether he was armed or unarmed. Fortunately for both of us, he froze in his tracks. Was I supposed to wait until I made sure he had a gun before I used a gun? Is this some kind of sporting contest. Some critics object when someone with a gun shoots someone who only has a knife. Do those critics know that you are just as dead when you are killed with a knife as you are when you are killed by a gun?

If we can't be bothered to stop and think, instead of repeating pat phrases, don't expect to live under the rule of law. Do you prefer the rule of the media and/or the mob?

It's shameful that many Christians can actually see it as merely sin and either avoid or even condemn people so struggling. Not many years ago, I once was going through such a difficult time that I was sharing with someone after a worship service and ended up breaking down crying. It shocked me later when a youth pastor said that he was told of this and that he couldn't have someone with such struggles working with his youth. I was stunned. This leader in the church was somehow unaware that there were more than a few of his youth (as there are more than a few in any church congregation at any time) at any time who were certainly struggling in some way. What they need most is to see people who were not afraid to show their pain and struggles, not people who are good at giving the appearance of having no struggles. Robin Williams demonstrates how people appear on the surface often doesn't tell the full story of what battles they are fighting. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:"Be kind; everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." (T.H. Thompason) Dear friend, look around you. People who give the appearance of "having it all together" are probably struggling with something. We all are. But praise God a Christian can draw strength from Jesus. - Stan]

One of the world’s favorite comedians took his own life. It makes me very sad. But it also makes me determined to get the word out about clinical depression.

By now, you’ve probably heard about the shocking suicide of comedian and Oscar-winning actor Robin Williams.Shocking, but if you know anything about suicide and Williams’ personal history, not entirely a surprise. Williams had been open about his problems with alcohol and drugs. What’s more, Williams had been, according to his publicist, “battling ‘severe depression.’”

Alcohol, drugs, depression, all of these are associated with suicide. And as psychiatrist Kay Redfield Jamison of Johns Hopkins writes in her book, “Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide,” the most common factor in suicide is mental illness, in particular "mood disorders" such as clinical depression and bipolar disorder.

Now, as somebody who has suffered from this myself over the years, I have to say it’s very important to be clear about what doctors mean by clinical depression. It is not being sad, even for extended periods of time. Sadness is part of the human condition. But clinical depression is a medical condition “which paralyzes all the otherwise vital forces that make us human,” leaving us with a life that is “bloodless” and “painless.”

In his book, “The Noonday Demon,” which chronicled his life with severe clinical depression, Andrew Solomon has written that the opposite of depression isn’t happiness, it’s vitality. And as Jamison tells us, the presence of mood disorders not only makes it more likely that a person will attempt suicide, but also will incline them towards more “serious” efforts in that direction—that is, efforts that exhibit more forethought and planning. Depressed people often self-medicate with alcohol and drugs, which, according to Jamison, "more often worsen [the pain]" and “undermine the individual’s willingness to seek out and receive good clinical care.”  They also reduce inhibitions and increase risk-taking, thus reinforcing whatever tendencies toward self-destruction a person may possess.

A friend of mine told me that several time he’d seen Robin Williams attending Redeemer Presbyterian in New York City. Apparently Williams was looking for answers. Maybe he found them, and maybe he didn’t; but we serve a merciful God whose thoughts and ways are not our own.

I say this because tragic events over the past few years have reminded us that Christians are not immune to the scourge of suicide. Outstanding Christians such as Tony Dungy and Rick Warren have lost sons to suicide. As Warren and his wife, Kay, told Piers Morgan of CNN, they had talked their son Matthew off the proverbial ledge many times in his tragically-short life.Like most of those left behind in the wake of suicide, they wondered if there was anything more they could have done, and concluded that the answer was “no.” As Warren told Morgan “If love could have kept my child alive, he'd be alive today, because he was incredibly loved.”

In the wake of Matthew Warren’s suicide, discussion about how churches deal with depression intensified. Christian leaders wrote about their own struggles with depression. And let me add my name and that of the colleague who helped me prepare this BreakPoint commentary to the list of those who struggle with depression.

If you or anyone you love suffers from depression, please get help. You can come to BreakPoint.org and click on this commentary and we’ll direct you to resources that can help.

Why some people ultimately succumb to what Christianity Today writer C. Michael Patton called “the asphyxiation of hope” and others don’t is something we just don’t know. What we do know is that Christians are called to walk alongside those who suffer.

"Robin Williams Considered Christ during Rehab" - CBNNews.com, Saturday, August 16, 2014; http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2014/August/Robin-Williams-Considered-Christ-during-Rehab/
As the nation mourns the loss of Robin Williams this week, his wife says the actor was struggling with the early stages of Parkinson's disease when he was found dead.Susan Schneider said her husband was also struggling with depression and anxiety but was sober at the time of his death. She said he wasn't ready to share his recent Parkinson's diagnosis publicly.

Ted Baehr, with Movieguide, often interviewed Williams. He told the Christian Post he thinks Williams considered coming to Christ while in rehab."I don't think he had that explicit experience of being set free," Baehr said.Williams told Can magazine in 2007 that going through rehab affected him spiritually."You come out of the other side knowing you're not alone and it gives you a very personal view of God," he said.
