#1745 (10/20) "Obamacare Is Experiencing Multi-Organ Failure"

"OBAMACARE IS EXPERIENCING MULTI-ORGAN FAILURE" - Robert Moffit / October 19, 2016 / http://dailysignal.com/2016/10/19/obamacare-is-experiencing-multi-organ-failure/?
President Barack Obama’s speech Thursday will likely highlight the “successes” of Obamacare, but this complex health law—with interlocking parts—is really becoming more like a patient suffering from multi-organ failure.

This year’s feverish health insurance premiums are unlikely to abate. For 2017, the premiums on Obamacare’s individual market are projected to increase by 25 percent on average.

Central planning is the disease.
It starts with the costly health insurance benefit mandates that the law requires of plans sold on the Obamacare exchanges. Those can only be sustained through a heavy dose of taxpayer subsidies for enrollees. For lower-income customers, the federal subsidies only mask the symptoms of the dramatic cost increases.

Meanwhile, the federal subsidy system is so poorly designed that in 2015 half of the lower-income people receiving subsidies ended up owing the government money. At the same time, health insurance deductibles skyrocketed. Still, there is a mandate to buy the federally approved insurance.

Yet, the individual mandate tax penalty—riddled with exceptions—is less than the cost of the insurance itself, rendering it ineffective; and an ugly business to enforce. From the inception of the enrollment in 2014, it was estimated that about 90 percent of those remaining uninsured would not be forced to pay a penalty. The result is that the Obamacare exchanges have disproportionately enrolled those who are older, sicker, and poorer.

Why? Because millions of younger, healthier people don’t see a benefit in enrolling. This “adverse selection” ends in even higher costs for insurers. Unable to sustain the losses, more insurers withdraw, further reducing exchange competition and enrollee choice.

Beyond big deductibles to make their higher premiums more “affordable,” insurers have narrowed the networks of doctors and hospitals covered by their plans, making enrollees’ access to care progressively more difficult and resulting in consumers having fewer doctors and hospitals to choose from. A new McKinsey & Co. analysis of insurance plan filings for 18 states shows that 75 percent of the offering on the 2017 exchanges will be HMOs with narrow networks.

And, faced with bigger losses on the increasingly dysfunctional exchanges, insurers beg Congress for bailouts—all funded on the backs of federal taxpayers.

The administration is hoping that exchange enrollment will increase. The Obamacare exchanges are not quite in cardiac arrest, but the vital signs show it heading there: less choice, less competition, higher premiums, and more substantial deductibles.

Independent analysts, such as Standard & Poor’s, are projecting a modest growth (possibly even a decline) in enrollment. The administration officials and their allies are pondering the same old quack remedies—a big IV drip of  taxpayer subsidies and even more coercive regulation.

As we head into Obamacare’s open enrollment season for 2017, Congress needs a health policy cure, not more short-term bailouts to insurers. Congress must systematically repeal and replace the law’s damaging provisions with competently crafted statutory alternatives. Bailouts just perpetuate the suffering.

"As Obama Travels to Florida to Promote Obamacare, State Faces Higher Costs, Fewer Options" - Fred Lucas / October 19, 2016 / http://dailysignal.com/2016/10/19/as-obama-travels-to-florida-to-promote-obamcare-state-faces-higher-costs-fewer-options/  "Before Obamacare insurance exchanges were established in 2013, Florida had 18 insurers operating in the state. President Barack Obama arrives in Miami Thursday to promote his signature legislative achievement, as Florida will have just five companies for Florida residents to choose from in 2017...The costs will likely continue to rise, but at this point, it’s something the 115th Congress will have to deal with, ...
'It matters more to the next Congress. I don’t see either of the presidential candidates taking the lead,' Haislmaier said. 'Basically, it’s not quite at the crisis stage yet, but as the individual exchanges hit higher premiums, Congress responds to a crisis. Something will come out of Congress and it will be bipartisan, that’s the only way it will pass and the next administration will support it.'”

My Greatest Concern is to be on God's Side

PRAYER MATTERS:"To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world." - Karl Barth; "Prayer is inviting God into a seemingly impossible situation and trusting/resting in His love and grace to accomplish His perfect will in His perfect time and for His greatest glory." - Stan

PRAY FOR AMERICA: THANK GOD for His many blessings on America throughout it's history. May we then ask that AMERICA once again be a blessing TO GOD, by once again submitting to HIS will in our affairs - both personal and national - that He may truly "heal our land." (2 Chron. 7:14) Short of that, we should not be saying "God Bless America"but instead "God be merciful towards America!" Rev. Franklin Graham: "I do know that the president defends Islam and chastises Christians, rebukes our allies and befriends our enemies, and fully supports gay marriages and abortion but denies the religious freedoms of those who don't agree. Our nation is ridiculed abroad and morally crumbling within. We are in trouble. We have turned our back on God."

PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS:  Let's be praying that they might be Spirit-filled, leading us with Godly wisdom and integrity; that they will  only pass legislation and enact policies that will benefit Americans today as well as future generations and NOT do any lasting harm.
PRAY that the justices sitting on the Supreme Court will only hand down decisions that are in the best interests of our country now and for future generations. [NOTE: There are only 23 days until Election Day. Please consider praying DAILY beginning  TODAY - if you are not already -  that Americans will vote in November with wisdom and discernment, for the leaders and policies that are best for America today and for generations to come. Pray that Americans will elect leaders at the state (Governors, state legislators) and national (Congress and President) levels who have Spirit-filled wisdom, integrity, and a Biblical world-view, who will know and do what is best for us today as well as for future generations.

URGENT: A Christian Mother's Mandatory Death Penalty Could Be Overturned. PRAY and Sign the Petition Now!
- https://aclj.org/persecuted-church/save-christian-mom-asia-bibi-from-execution? - Almost 6 years ago, when Bibi defended her faith at her workplace, the workers accused her of insulting the Islamic prophet Mohmmed. She was soon arrested on blasphemy charges and sentenced to death by hanging by a local judge. She has been languishing on death row nearly 6 years - separated from her husband and five kids all because of her Christian faith. Since then lawyers and human rights activists have been working around the clock to appeal the case and give her a second chance at life.
Now, after more than 2,100 excruciating days, Pakistan's Supreme Court has just granted her an early review of her final appeal. This is a monumental moment in her case. Pakistan's Supreme Court will hear her final appeal THIS week -  on Wed.Oct. 12 -  to decide whether she lives or dies. On that day, the court could release her or have her hanged. If executed, she would be the first woman executed under Pakistan's brutal blasphemy law. The American Center for Law and Justice has been aggressively advocating for her freedom for years - including through our office on the ground in Pakistan. But now is the time for urgent action. The ACLJ is stepping up their vigorous legal advocacy campaign across the globe for her freedom. It is imperative that each of us be heard.
Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) is asking Christians around the world to join in a 24/7 prayer marathon the week of her appeal. CSW is asking them to pray for the following:
That Asia would be acquitted.
For her strength and restoration during and after the hearing.
For wisdom and protection for Saiful Malook, her lawyer; and for the judges hearing her case.
For the wider Christian community who may face a backlash whatever the outcome of the appeal.
For an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Pakistan, to maintain calm in the country.
For justice for others accused of blasphemy, and that the government would urgently amend the blasphemy laws.

Don't let them execute Christian mom Asia Bibi!; SIGN the petition and PRAY for this court decision! [I've been praying in addition that , should she be released and the situation be too tense for her and her family to remain in Pakistan, they would be able to find asylum in another country, possibly even the U.S. - Stan]

How greatly we need for this generation of young people to be embolden to stand up for their faith and for Biblical truth in a world obsessed with political correctness. - Stan]

It’s been 17 years since Beth Nimmo lost her daughter Rachel Joy Scott in the shooting at Columbine High School. Time will not make the loss less painful, but this year Ms. Nimmo is ready to share some precious pieces of Rachel’s life in a new film by Pure Flix Entertainment, I'm Not Ashamed.

Many Americans are aware of what transpired in the last moments of Rachel's life. On April 20,1999, two of her fellow classmates approached her with their firearms and asked her if she still believed in God. When she looked at them and said, “You know I do,” they responded, “Then go be with him,” before shooting and killing her. Her bold faith became an inspiration to Christians everywhere.

I'm Not Ashamed tells the story of how Rachel became a Christian, using several of her own writings and drawings that illustrate just how she was able to practice her faith so boldly.

Nimmo told Townhall she was a little apprehensive about the film at first, but she is “very pleased” with how authentic the movie turned out. She had kind words for Masey McLain, the actress who plays her daughter in the film. To prepare for the leading role, McLain studied Rachel’s journals and prayed on set in order to portray her as accurately as she could.

“Duck Dynasty’s” Sadie and Korie Robertson also make cameos in the film in what Nimmo described as the most important scene – the moment Rachel accepts Jesus as her savior. It goes without saying how much Ms. Nimmo’s daughter’s diary entries means to her. “I’ve seen those ever since Rachel died,” Nimmo explained. “That was a catalyst for why this movie needed to be told.”

Nimmo says Rachel's writings prove she had a “burden for the lost.” “She wrote about touching people’s hearts,” Nimmo explained. “Her love for the Lord really radiated how she treated people. I think a lot of her writing, especially when she’s talking to God. God used her to be a light. To reach kids, especially her peers who are in despair, facing a lot of obstacles and didn’t really have direction in their life. I think she wanted to show them Jesus was the answer for so many of those things.”

Nimmo has forgiven her daughter’s killers. She said it’s what Rachel would have wanted. “First of all, it’s scriptural,” Nimmo explained. “As a believer, I want to be obedient to the word. Secondly, I want to represent Rachel because that would be her heart to do so. She would have been the first to say, ‘Mom, please forgive.' Thirdly, I do it because April 20, 1999 was a life sentence for Rachel. And I didn’t want to make it my life sentence.”

“When you hold on to anger and resentment, you’ve really locked yourself down to that point of not being able to move forward,” she added. “I was determined that what happened to me that day would not define the rest of my life.” The act of forgiving, Nimmo was sure to note, does not mean she’s saying it’s okay what happened. It’s allowing herself to move forward.

It’s also a process. Nimmo shared that she still has to practice forgiving because she sees or hears things that trigger negative emotions.

If you couldn’t tell from the title, I'm Not Ashamed was filmed with the hope of emboldening Christians to wear their faith on their sleeves. “We’re hoping to do more than just present a film and tell Rachel’s story,” Nimmo said. “We’re hoping to really start a movement and for kids to champion their faith.”

Speaking out about one’s faith is increasingly difficult in today’s culture, she lamented. She put part of the blame on the rise of social media, which she says is “trying to redefine who we are as a country” and “redefine the role of parents.”

As for the PC police, Nimmo is not a fan. “I’m one that I don’t care about being politically correct,” she insisted. “The purpose of that is to silence truth. We're afraid to address what’s real, what’s really happening. I don’t step away from saying what I believe.”

It’s harder, however, for children to do that. Rachel understood that, Nimmo said. Her daughter often chronicled the struggles of being a Christian at school and how kids mocked her. It’s time to change the conversation and offer Christians their own safe space.

“It’s going to take working together,” Nimmo said. “We want kids to know they’re not alone, they’re not isolated. There’s a lot of Rachels out there that really love the Lord and want to be impacting their school and their community but they feel overwhelmed because they don’t realize there are others who feel that way.”

"I'm Not Ashamed" is in theaters this Friday, October 21.

#1743 (10/18) "The All-Out Assault on the First Amendment"

"THE ALL-OUT ASSAULT ON THE FIRST AMENDMENT" - Hans von Spakovsky / Jennifer Matthes / October 12, 2016 / http://dailysignal.com/2016/10/12/the-all-out-assault-on-the-first-amendment/

As a result of the IRS inappropriately targeting conservative organizations because of their “disfavored viewpoints,” they were subjected to long delays, investigations, and intrusive and unjustified interrogations about their opinions, views, members, and practices. (Photo: Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call/Newscom)

The Constitution has long been subject to attacks from individuals hostile to its guarantees of freedom, economic opportunity, and limited government, but in recent days no other provision has been as widely and intensely attacked as the First Amendment.

From the IRS targeting conservative groups to those trying to limit the ability of Americans to freely practice their religious beliefs, to membership organizations being forced to disclose their donors, the First Amendment is being assaulted on all sides. Americans are familiar with the recent attacks on religious liberty, present in everything from forcing religious business owners to offer abortion-inducing drugs and perform same-sex wedding services that violate their fundamental beliefs to the exclusion of churches from secular public projects. Cases questioning the government’s encroachment on religious liberty continue to come before the U.S. Supreme Court, as seen in Zubik v. Burwell last term and potentially Trinity Lutheran Church v. Pauley this term, which deals with a church’s exclusion from public funding for construction of a playground.

The First Amendment has also been caught in the crosshairs of a battle between the IRS and various conservative organizations. As a result of the IRS inappropriately targeting conservative organizations because of their “disfavored viewpoints,” they were subjected to long delays, investigations, and intrusive and unjustified interrogations about their opinions, views, members, and practices. As a federal appeals court recently said, the IRS “utterly failed” to apply “the tax law with integrity and fairness.” Instead, its behavior was a “blatant violation of the First Amendment.”

This abuse of governmental power against organizations with a conservative and traditional view of the Constitution, culture, and government policy does not bode well for protection of free speech and freedom of association.  Neither does the continual push to overturn the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United, which restored vital First Amendment rights that had been limited by unconstitutional campaign finance laws.

Nor does the aggressive move by certain state attorneys general to criminalize scientific dissent by initiating criminal investigations targeting companies and others who disagree with the unproven theory of catastrophic, man-made global warming.

And, of course, the attacks on freedom of speech are most prevalent on college campuses, as speech codes and safe spaces abound. These attacks are evident in “speech zones,” which restrict free speech activities to only a small area of campus, and “speech codes,” which include broad anti-harassment policies frequently construed to limit speech on the basis of content or viewpoints that are not politically correct. These policies are starkly at odds with the First Amendment, yet students are often some of the staunchest defenders of these misguided and unconstitutional policies, and the administrations follow suit.

This was most recently demonstrated in a University of Virginia professor’s forced leave of absence for engaging in classic First Amendment activity—posting a comment critical of the Black Lives Matter movement on Facebook. The backlash from students and administrators alike resulted in his swift removal. Ironically, the great damage being done to college students’ First Amendment rights is self-inflicted, as they advocate for further restrictions of their own rights and the rights of others.

#1742 (10/17) "Planned Parenthood’s 100th (Un)Birthday Is No Cause to Celebrate"

"PLANNED PARENTHOOD'S 100TH UN)BIRTHDAY IS NO CAUSE TO CELEBRATE" - Melanie Israel / October 14, 2016 / http://dailysignal.com/2016/10/14/planned-parenthoods-100th-unbirthday-is-no-cause-to-celebrate/

Planned Parenthood affiliates operate over 650 clinics across the country. (Photo: Lucas Jackson/Reuters/Newscom)

As this month marks Planned Parenthood’s 100th anniversary, we should pause and consider its destructive legacy.

Founded by eugenicist Margaret Sanger in 1916, what is now known as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America began as a small birth control clinic in New York City. Sanger was motivated by her belief that artificial birth control and eugenics would “assist the race toward the elimination of the unfit,” including “morons” and “various criminal types” who “populate the slums.”

Today, Planned Parenthood affiliates operate over 650 clinics across the country and the organization is America’s leading abortion provider, performing 324,000 abortions last year, which works out to about one abortion every 98 seconds.

Over 57 million abortions have been performed in the United States in the years leading up to and following the tragic Roe v. Wade decision by an activist Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood has worked tirelessly to make abortion the cornerstone of Sanger’s legacy. What is that legacy?
* Fighting parental notification laws that protect children who seek abortions.
* Advocating for taxpayer-funded abortion in the United States and overseas.
*Attacking life-affirming pregnancy resource centers that provide humane abortion alternatives.
*Opposing laws guaranteeing informed consent for women seeking abortions.
*Opposing partial-birth abortion bans.
*Opposing bans on sex-selective abortion.
*Opposing laws that protect children that survive abortions.
*Opposing commonsense health and safety standards for abortion facilities.
*Using its 501(c)(4) advocacy arm to spend $30 million electing pro-abortion politicians to public office.

Planned Parenthood purports to provide a wide range of health care, but its own data reveals that it is a profit-driven, abortion-centric organization. [http://www.aul.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Abortion-Inc.pdf]

According to its most recent annual report [https://www.plannedparenthood.org/files/2114/5089/0863/2014-2015_PPFA_Annual_Report_.pdf], abortion comprised a whopping 94 percent of Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy-related services. At the same time, cancer screening and prevention services dropped by two-thirds since 2006. Despite perceptions to the contrary, Planned Parenthood does not conduct mammograms.

According to court documents, Planned Parenthood now requires that all member affiliates provide abortion services and has been aggressively expanding its business in the last decade by opening abortion “mega-centers” (buildings that are at least 10,000 square feet). Despite the fact that the abortion rate in the United States has declined to its lowest point since Roe v. Wade, the mega-center model has enabled Planned Parenthood to go from performing one out of every five abortions in America in 2004 to performing nearly one out of every three in 2011.

Planned Parenthood attempts to downplay its role as America’s abortion giant by claiming that abortion is only “3 percent” of what it does. It reaches this figure by misleadingly counting each abortion as being equivalent to comparatively minor services. Rich Lowry at National Review points out: "By Planned Parenthood’s math, a woman who gets an abortion but also a pregnancy test, an STD test, and some contraceptives has received four services, and only 25 percent of them are abortion. This is a little like performing an abortion and giving a woman an aspirin, and saying only half of what you do is abortion." According to Roger Severino and Jamie Hall, my colleagues at The Heritage Foundation, Planned Parenthood’s own figures show that one out of every eight (12 percent) of its customers get abortions, not one out of every 33 (3 percent).

To Fund or Not to Fund
Despite its leading position in the abortion industry, Planned Parenthood continues to receive hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars through grants and reimbursements every year. Planned Parenthood’s most recent annual report reveals it received over $550 million from taxpayers last year alone.

Thanks to the long-standing Hyde Amendment, federal dollars cannot be spent on abortion in most circumstances. While most states have taken the federal government’s lead and do not allow state dollars to pay for abortion services, 17 states do allow public funding for abortion under Medicaid and others mandate abortion insurance coverage. And, since some federal money can be used to cover overhead expenses, and because money is ultimately fungible, taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood free up funds for it to expand its abortion business, which it has done with gusto.

Playing Defense
Last year, the Center for Medical Progress released a series of undercover videos that shocked the nation and raised disturbing questions about whether or not Planned Parenthood affiliates illegally profited from harvesting tissue from aborted babies. Congress subsequently established a special panel to investigate the charge and the House voted to defund Planned Parenthood.

Desperate to change the subject, Planned Parenthood and its allies are currently campaigning to force taxpayers to fund abortion directly by attempting to repeal the long-standing Hyde Amendment. Making this unpopular proposal the signature effort of this election season shows how extreme and out of touch Planned Parenthood is with average Americans.

Planned Parenthood isn’t oblivious to the fact that millennials are more pro-life than previous generations or that 80% of Americans support at least limiting abortion to the first trimester. And Planned Parenthood is certainly worried that in recent years there has been a wave of life-affirming laws enacted at the state level.

Countering a Culture of Death
Pro-life Americans are working tirelessly to promote a culture of life. They’re supporting organizations that provide services, education, supplies, counseling, and compassionate options to people experiencing a tough pregnancy. They’re sharing information about alternatives to Planned Parenthood, including the 13,540 community health centers that provide comprehensive care to millions of uninsured, working poor, and jobless Americans. They’re encouraging adoption and opening their homes and hearts to the children of mothers who chose life.

Planned Parenthood’s 100-year presence in America has left a gaping hole in our society. Planned Parenthood has denied millions of baby girls and boys the right to be born, and has wounded countless women both physically and psychologically. Today is not a time to celebrate but to mourn the loss of millions of innocents lives that have been violently cut short in Planned Parenthood clinics.

#1741 (10/16) SUNDAY SPECIAL: "Americans Fail Theology 101 - THE WAGES OF DOCTRINAL DOCILITY"

"Americans Fail Theology 101 - THE WAGES OF DOCTRINAL DOCILITY" - By: Eric Metaxas|Breakpoint.org: Oct. 6, 2016; http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/entry/13/29943

Could you pass a basic theology quiz? Several thousand Americans just tried. Uh-oh. Too bad God doesn’t grade on a curve.

One thing is certain: Americans love the Bible. A recent report from The American Bible Society and Barna Group finds that two-thirds of the nation believe the Bible contains “everything a person needs to know in order to live a meaningful life.” And a vast majority of folks in this country still consider themselves Christians. But just how deep does their Christianity run?

Not very, according to the results of a survey released late last month by LifeWay Research. The survey, commissioned by Ligonier Ministries, asked 3,000 participants a set of 47 questions about foundational Christian beliefs. Many of the answers revealed a mishmash of heresy and confusion about Christianity’s most basic doctrines.

Seventy percent of Americans agree there’s only one true God—one in essence, three in person: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Yet almost the same number believe God accepts the worship of all other religions, even those that deny the Trinity or worship other deities. Sixty-one percent correctly say Jesus is both human and divine, but half think that He’s also “the first and greatest being created by God,” rather than existing eternally, as Scripture and the ancient creeds of the faith teach.

More bizarre contradictions emerged: Over sixty percent of Americans say that God, Who cannot err, is the Author of the Bible. Yet fewer than half are willing to affirm that the Bible God wrote is “one hundred percent accurate in all it teaches.” Two-thirds admit everyone sins, yet also insist that most people are good by nature! Perhaps most oddly, half of Americans believe that only those who accept Jesus will be saved, yet sixty percent also say everyone will eventually make it to Heaven.

So what about professing Christians and especially evangelicals? Surely they did much better on basic doctrines of the faith. Uh, no.

Lifeway identified 586 of the three-thousand respondents as “evangelical.” These are folks who believe the Bible is their highest authority, that personal evangelism is important, and that trusting in Jesus’ death on the cross is the only way of salvation.

Yet huge percentages of these folks appeared to affirm major tenets of ancient heresies like Arianism. An astonishing seventy percent, for instance, say Jesus is a created being. Fifty-six percent say the Third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, “is a divine force but not a personal being.”

Evangelicals, by definition, believe trusting in Jesus is the only way of salvation. Yet two-thirds of evangelicals—more than Americans as a whole—claim Heaven is a place where all people will ultimately be reunited with loved ones.

It’s not just the departures from these historic doctrines that should concern us, but the contradictory answers. It shows not only that Americans in general and evangelicals in particular have the wrong answers on basic Christian doctrines, but that they don’t really understand the concept of doctrine itself.

Howard Snyder, director of Manchester Wesley Research Center, attributes this widespread cluelessness to churches having basically abandoned theological education. Catechesis has fallen by the wayside.

Folks, if we hope to preserve not only evangelical faith in the generations to come, but also the “mere Christianity” expressed in the Nicene Creed, we have to take theological instruction seriously again.

If you think you need a little help, come to BreakPoint.org and we’ll link you to resources that’ll equip you, your family, and your church not just to pass any test, but to confess, along with Christians down through the ages, “the faith once for all delivered to the saints.”

#1740 (10/15) PRO-LIFE SAT: "Helping Others Say 'No' to Assisted Suicide - MAKING THCASE FOR DIGNITY AT THE END OF LIFE"

"Helping Others Say 'No' to Assisted Suicide - MAKING THE CASE FOR DIGNITY AT THE END OF LIFE" - By: John Stonestreet| Breakpoint.org: Oct. 12, 2016; http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/entry/13/29966 [NOTE: This article refers to what was posted in blog #1737 (this past Wed.)]

Whether you live in Colorado or not, you need to know what’s at stake with doctor-assisted death and how to make the case for life.

[In post #1734],  I told you about the dangers of physician-assisted suicide laws: How they inevitably turn the “right to die” into the “duty to die,” how these laws lead to the deaths of non-terminally ill patients, and how they threaten the lives of the disabled and the most vulnerable among us. We must be prepared to talk about these deadly laws with friends and neighbors and persuade them to oppose physician-assisted suicide.

A great place to start is to focus on the definition of words, especially “dignity” and “compassion.” These words are used to great effect by pro-euthanasia forces, but they’ve been redefined. “Dignity” went from meaning worthy of honor and respect to meaning little more than fully affirming one’s lifestyle choices.

But now let’s look at the word “choice.” In the Netherlands last spring, doctors euthanized a young sexual assault victim who suffered from depression and anorexia. Did she “choose” to die, or did her mental state prevent her from choosing to live? According to LifeNews.com, in Oregon, only 5.3 percent of those who request suicide are referred for a psychiatric evaluation—“despite studies showing prevalence of depression in such patients.” In fact, most patients in Oregon who were assisted in their suicide did not list physical pain as the primary reason. A far greater number listed depression instead. Thus it should alarm all of us that Colorado’s Proposition 106 does not require psychiatric evaluation for patients requesting suicide.

How is it compassionate, we should ask, to refuse to help those whose depression is crippling their ability to face severe physical problems?

Also in Oregon, nearly half of those who ended their life had no medical oversight. As reported by Colorado Christian University’s Centennial Institute, one man had an “unanticipated and severe reaction” to his lethal prescription. He was revived at a Portland hospital only to die later at a nursing facility. “In another case,” the Institute reports, “a victim who took the prescription awoke after 65 hours of unconsciousness.”

Colorado’s Prop 106 “does not provide for a health-care professional of any kind to be on hand to ensure the drugs are administered competently.” So much for compassion.

And then there’s the matter of potential abuse by insurance firms—something Prop 106 offers no protection from. The trailer for a Center for Bioethics and Culture’s upcoming documentary on assisted suicide features an interview with a young California woman. Shortly after California legalized assisted suicide, her insurance company refused to cover the chemotherapy that would extend her life. They would, however, cover the lethal drugs that would kill her.

If that doesn’t send a chill up your spine, maybe this will. Prop 106, like in Oregon and California, prevents the cause of death on the death certificate from being listed as doctor assisted suicide. That’s just dishonest. And, we should add, the number of non-assisted suicides in Oregon has increased since their legislation was put in place. That’s one reason the Colorado Springs Gazette editorial board is opposing Prop 106—my city is already facing a suicide epidemic among students and military. If suicide is legal, how can we possibly tell students that it’s not the answer?

Like Colorado, the District of Columbia is also considering assisted suicide legislation, and pro-suicide groups are at work in state houses across the nation.

I urge you, whether you live in Colorado or not, to read through the resources we’ve gathered on the dangers of assisted suicide. Our Stop 106 Tool Kit offers talking points, videos, articles, even bulletin inserts for your church to use. All you have to do is go to ColsonCenter.org/prop106.

Death by suicide is knocking at our door. We must answer and say NO!

#1739 (10/14) "4 Times Conservatives Lost a Major Supreme Court Case by a Single Vote"

"4 TIMES CONSERVATIVES LOST A MAJOR SJPREME COURT CASE BY A SINGLE VOTE" - Tiffany Bates / October 13, 2016 / http://dailysignal.com/2016/10/13/4-times-conservatives-lost-a-major-supreme-court-case-by-a-single-vote/ [AS I SEE IT: This article points out why the next President's choices of who sits on the Supreme Court - as well as other federal benches - could vary easily decide the course of America on so many fronts in the generations to come. And that is why what kind of justices the next President chooses is SO VERY CRUCIAL. I pray every American will consider this before voting in November. - Stan]

Sunday night’s second presidential debate underscored the importance of the next Supreme Court justice, as the candidates and questioners alike recognized that the fate of the federal courts rests in the next president’s hands.

The high court has been closely divided on many contentious issues in recent years, and the next justice could change the development and application of the law for decades. As former Attorney General Ed Meese has stated, “No president exercises any power more far-reaching, more likely to influence his legacy, than the selection of federal judges.”

Although the Framers of the Constitution envisioned the judiciary as the “least dangerous branch,” the judges who populate its ranks wield tremendous power to decide cases that affect the daily lives of millions of Americans.

While each branch of government has an independent duty to uphold the Constitution, the Supreme Court has grabbed power by declaring that its decisions are the supreme law of the land, and the other branches have largely acceded to these claims. This is why every vote matters in cases before the Supreme Court.

Often, significant cases are decided by just one vote. While the justices agree in many cases, the next president must consider that one person could make a big difference in nearly a quarter of cases that the court decides by a 5-4 margin each term.

Consider some of the important cases that struck a blow to the Constitution over the past 10 years where one justice was the deciding vote:
In Kelo v. City of New London, the Supreme Court interpreted the takings clause of the Constitution to allow the government to seize citizens’ homes—not to build a road or fulfill some other public use as is required by the Fifth Amendment, but to transfer the property to a private corporation because it could pay more taxes.
In Boumediene v. Bush, the Supreme Court extended the right of habeas corpus to the Guantanamo Bay detainees, usurping national security authority.
In National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius, the Supreme Court instituted one of the largest tax increases in history when it strained the Affordable Care Act’s text to uphold the individual health care mandate as a valid exercise of Congress’ taxing power.
In Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court recognized a constitutional right to marriage that includes same-sex couples in a decision so unmoored from the text of the Constitution that even supporters of the ruling have described it as unintelligible and poorly reasoned.

Now consider some of the significant wins for the Constitution where one justice cast the deciding vote:
In McDonald v. City of Chicago and District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court overturned Chicago and Washington, D.C.’s, virtual bans on handguns, upholding the Second Amendment rights of Americans.
In Town of Greece v. Galloway and Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the Supreme Court respected religious freedom, upholding a town council’s right to begin a meeting with a prayer, and stopping the government from requiring business owners to pay for certain abortion-inducing drugs and devices in their health care plans against their religious beliefs.
In Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission and McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court tossed out unconstitutional restrictions on political speech and campaign contributions.
In Shelby County v. Holder, the Supreme Court held that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which set forth an outdated coverage formula that was used to determine which states needed to get preapproval from the federal government before making any changes in their voting laws, was unconstitutional.

On the occasion of nominating Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Justice Antonin Scalia, President Ronald Reagan reminded us that Supreme Court justices “must not only be jurists of the highest competence; they must also be attentive to the rights specifically guaranteed in our Constitution and to the proper role of the courts in our democratic system.” The Supreme Court is only one vote away from upholding or rejecting these principles.
