#373 (11/30) - Why the U.S. Supreme Court Needs Our Prayers and Attention.

BLOG NOTE: If you've looked to the right of this blog page, you've notice large gaps of empty space after the first several entries. I don't know why, but  for some reason since recently, I cannot remove those gaps NOR type any new text but one letter at a time. Please PRAY that this might be reseolved soon. PRAYER REQUEST: The U.S. Supreme Court
1) (If they do not already ...) For Chief Justice John Roberts; Associate justices Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy, Sonya Sotamayer, Elena Kagen, Stephen Bryer, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg to each know the gospel of Jesus Christ and come to have a personal relationshp with God through Him.
2) Most seem to be unaware that the Supreme Court has been in it's  annual session beginnning this past October. PRAY that the court will only render decisions based on original intent of the writers of the Constitution and not in any way make new law, which is never their purpose.
3) PRAY that, should any of the justices need to step down from their position, that they would be replaced by someone who would faithfully only interpret the Constitution as it was written without ever being guilty of judicial activism.

"The Next President and the Supreme Court" - by Ed Meese, November 5, 2012  http://blog.heritage.org/2012/11/05/morning-bell-the-next-president-and-the-supreme-court/print/?roi=echo3-13719233103-10192218-ee888dde045d64558ca752ad78b96e25&utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Morning%2BBell  [Though this article was orginally written a year ago (see notation at the end), the truths of what t presents remanl. As the President leads the way in appointing new justices, it underscores even more how important were the results of any Presidential election.]
Every vote counts. And this year, it could count double. One vote could decide both the immediate election and the course of constitutional law for decades to come.

Just ask the senior federal officials responsible for our security immediately after 9/11 who were sued years later by Javaid Iqbal. During the investigation into the attacks, FBI officials identified Iqbal as a suspect of high interest and detained him in New York. He sued alleging that high government officials, including Attorney General John Ashcroft, personally ordered that he be discriminated against on the basis of religion, race, or national origin.

Iqbal provided no facts in support of his conspiracy theory. When his case finally reached the Supreme Court, five justices properly, but narrowly, rejected his speculative claims that would have cleared the way for plaintiffs’ lawyers to embark on fishing expeditions in hopes of winning windfall damages from current and former federal officials. Only a single vote in the high court kept Iqbal and countless others with no proof of any wrongdoing outside their own imagination from subjecting government officials to depositions and other harassing litigation tactics. Though the chance of hitting a punitive-damages jackpot is small, the prospect of such an award would have ensured a steady flow of rapacious court challenges.

Americans naturally consider many issues in casting their vote for President. But they should remember how important their votes will be in deciding the nation’s constitutional course. Neither presidential candidate has made his criteria for judicial nominations much of an issue during this campaign, but whom we select as President may well determine the viability of the rule of law for the foreseeable future.

The right approach was best articulated by Ronald Reagan. As he said on the day that Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Justice Antonin Scalia were sworn in:
"[Our Founders] settled on a judiciary that would be independent and strong, but one whose power would also, they believed, be confined within the boundaries of a written Constitution and laws. The framers of our Constitution believed…that the judiciary they envisioned would be “the least dangerous” branch of the Government, because, as Alexander Hamilton wrote in the Federalist Papers, it had “neither force nor will, but merely judgment.” The judicial branch interprets the laws, while the power to make and execute those laws is balanced in the two elected branches. And this was one thing that Americans of all persuasions supported."
Justice Felix Frankfurter put it this way: “the highest exercise of judicial duty is to subordinate one’s personal pulls and one’s private views to the law.”

Sadly, too few judges today understand their proper role. Rather than exercising judgment, they impose will. This form of judicial activism substitutes personal preferences for the command of law. The rule of law is not an infinitely flexible tool that allows the bench to impose its policy choices on the citizenry. Rather, it is a defined set of boundaries derived from the text of the Constitution and accompanying statutes.

The meaning of those texts was fixed at the time of adoption; any other approach rejects democracy for oligarchy. Words, in context, have real, binding meanings. Even if reasonable people disagree about some hard cases, judges should aim to discern and apply the original public meaning of the text at issue rather than what they want it to mean.

In recent decades, judges have made many decisions unconstrained by the rule of law. Far too often the Supreme Court itself, by a 5-4 vote, contorts the text of the Constitution or a statute to reach a preferred policy result, substituting its own judgment for that of the legislature or the Framers.

Consider a small sampling of recent decisions where a single, misconceived vote mattered.
  • In McCreary County v. ACLU, the 5-4 majority held that the display of the Ten Commandments in a county courthouse violated the Establishment Clause because it was supposedly not sufficiently integrated with a secular or historical message.
  • In Kelo v. City of New London, a thin majority decided that a city may take private property—including people’s homes—and give it to a big corporation, supposedly to generate more tax revenue. This decision ignored the clear constitutional requirement that property be taken only for “public use.”
  • In Massachusetts v. EPA, the Court usurped a political question from the legislative and executive branches and jumped into the middle of the global warming regulatory debate. In so doing, it overturned the Environmental Protection Agency’s reasoned decision not to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, and required the EPA to adopt a regulation.
  • And no discussion of controversial 5-4 decisions would be complete without mentioning the Court’s decision in NFIB v. Sebelius last June. There, a bare majority upheld the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act under the guise of reading its individual mandate as a tax.
As Americans go to the polls this month, they should ponder President Reagan’s words: “Those who sit in the Supreme Court interpret the laws of our land and truly do leave their footprints on the sands of time. Long after the policies of Presidents and Senators and Congressmen of any given era may have passed from public memory, they’ll be remembered.” Every vote does, indeed, count.

PRAYER  REQUEST: "Congress Returns Under Budget Deal Pressure," November 25

Congress returns to business on Monday with the budget deal their number one priority.
The legislators are under an end-of-the-year deadline to reach a deal that cuts the federal deficit and avoids the combination of $500 billion in tax hikes and federal spending cuts due to take effect on January 2. The so-called “fiscal cliff” has Americans nervous about the potential tax increases or loss of entitlement benefits from popular programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

The biggest stalemate between Democrats and Republicans has been over whether to raise income tax rates on yearly earnings over $200,000 for individuals, and $250,000 for families. President Obama wants to let tax rates rise next year to a top rate of 39.6 percent but has hinted that he is open to compromise. Meanwhile, House Majority Leader John Boehner and other Republicans oppose any increase above the current top marginal rate of 35 percent. They propose lowering tax rates and eliminating or reducing some deductions and tax credits. (Sources: Fox News, AP)

As the Lord leads, please pray:

  • For a spirit of compromise and cooperation from Senators in both political parties over the budget deal
  • That Congress and President Obama can agree on how to solve the budget crisis by the end of the year
  • That the American economy will begin continue to improve and those out of work can soon find jobs

"The Fiscal Cliff: A Primer, " November 12;  http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=22564&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=DPD

With almost no time to celebrate his reelection, President Obama must quickly come to an agreement with lawmakers on the "fiscal cliff," a combination of spending cuts and tax increases that pose a threat to the fragile economic recovery, says the Tax Foundation.

The fiscal cliff includes such things as:
  • Expiring provisions of the 2001 and 2003 Bush Tax Cuts.
  • A compromise that will increase the estate tax.
  • A patch in the Alternative Minimum Tax.
  • A temporary 2 percent payroll tax holiday.
  • Five new taxes as a result of the Affordable Care Act.
  • In total, the tax increases are slated to cost around $514 billion.
  • Additionally, there are spending cuts of $109 billion.
The federal government is borrowing an average of $2.7 billion a day. As a result, the debt is expected to approach the ceiling by the end of 2012, possibly as late as February 2013. Lawmakers expect another political fight between Republicans who resist any future increases to the debt, at least without spending cuts, and Democrats who favor increasing the debt without any future deficit reduction plans.
In the debt ceiling negotiations between Obama and Congress, lawmakers failed to agree on a $4 trillion deficit reduction plan. A law passed in August 2011 stated that if Congress was not able to implement a deficit reduction plan over the next 10 years, then there would be automatic cuts to both defense and non-defense discretionary items. This was done in part to make the cuts so unreasonable to both parties that there would be cooperation in coming up with a deficit reduction plan.

In addition to the debt ceiling, Congress will also pass a new budget or a continuing resolution before March 2013. The last federal budget was passed in April 2009 and since then any spending authorizations have been done through continuing resolutions. In the upcoming year, Congress has the chance to enact a new budget that can reevaluate the priorities of different programs that receive federal funding.

"Without a Cliff Deal, States Will Bleed Red Ink;" November 21; http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=22601&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=DPD

The fiscal cliff is looming over the country as many states prepare for the economic impacts if Congress and the president are not able to negotiate a deal soon. According to a study by the Pew Center on the States, the economic slowdown would significantly affect state economic activity, as well as undercut many state budgets, say Eric Pianin and Brianna Ehley of the Fiscal Times.
Many states have or are in the process of making contingency plans. The expiration of many taxes, like the Bush tax cuts, as well as tax increases and spending cuts will affect states greatly.
  • Six states that allow residents to deduct federal taxes from their income in filing state tax returns would lose money once the Bush-era tax cuts expire because those residents have less to pay in state income taxes.
  • Conversely, 43 states and the District of Columbia will have an increase in revenues since people will have more income to be taxed.
  • Moreover, there will be lower federal deductions, which could result in more income being taxed at the state level.
  • Additionally, there will be a higher taxable corporate income.
High-income taxpayers can also expect a reinstatement of limits on some deductions if the tax cuts are allowed to expire. Even though some states are expected to see a slight rise in revenue from the ability to generate more revenue from taxes, families are going to be hard hit and so will industries that supply important jobs for the economy. For example, the defense industry warned of massive layoffs if the cuts to the defense budget are to go through. Federal spending on defense comprises 3.5 percent of the total gross domestic product of states.

States like New Jersey and New York are in an especially difficult situation considering the toll that Hurricane Sandy has taken on their budgets. New Jersey residents may face higher tax bills as local governments exceed the 2 percent cap on annual increases to cover rebuilding costs.

PRAYER REQUEST: Turmoil in Egypt Resulting From It's New President's Power Grab (see story below)

As the Lord leads, please pray:
  • For the end to the violent rioting that continues as result of President's Morsi's actions
  • For political stability in Egypt and the preservation of democracy
  • That the Muslim Brotherhood’s power in Egypt will be limited
  • That the Obama administration will keep a watchful eye on developments in Egypt and not continue to make overtures to the Muslim Brotherhood and consider them ":moderate."
- (article below by James Phillips, November 26)
Egypt remains in turmoil after its president decreed last Thursday that he was no longer subject to the laws of his country—giving himself power over the judiciary and other branches of government. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi made his lunge for power shortly after helping to broker a fragile ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, the extremist offshoot of his own Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood’s agenda [1] includes imposing Sharia (Islamic law), curbing the rights of women and religious minorities, abandoning Egypt’s 1979 peace treaty with Israel [have always called for its destruction], and advancing Islamist causes around the world.

Reuters reports that about 370 people [2] have been injured in clashes between protesters and police since Morsi issued his decree last Thursday. The president is meeting with judges today, supposedly on an agreement to amend his decree, but protesters say they want to see it reversed completely.

Morsi has set Egypt on a troubling new foreign policy course [3] since coming to power in June. His government has distanced itself from Washington while cozying up to China, improving relations with Iran, and violating its peace treaty with Israel. He has escalated Egypt’s cooperation with Hamas, the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood that controls Gaza and remains adamantly committed to Israel’s destruction. Morsi’s Islamist-dominated government has cracked down on Egypt’s media and has announced that Egyptian journalists will be put on trial for “insults” to the president. Morsi’s government is systematically clamping down on Egyptians’ political, social, and cultural freedoms.
Yet the Obama Administration naively continues to court it as a partner.

Morsi may calculate that his help in administering Band-Aids to the festering Israeli-Palestinian conflict will make the United States and others who give aid to Egypt think twice before trying to reverse his power grab. The Obama Administration was working on an aid package [3] to Egypt that includes forgiving approximately $1 billion of Egypt’s debt to the United States. This is in addition to about $1.5 billion in annual U.S. foreign aid.

When protesters tore down the American flag at the U.S. embassy in Cairo on September 11, Morsi’s public reaction was nonchalant. Instead of immediately denouncing the attack and taking action to upgrade security around the embassy—as Libyan and Yemeni leaders have done after similar events—Morsi waited a day before casually issuing a mild rebuke to the rioters via Facebook.

The Obama Administration should leverage U.S. aid to pressure [3] the Egyptian leader to respect the rule of law, abide by the decisions of Egypt’s courts, and abandon his drive for absolute power. Morsi has exploited external crises in the past to advance his own ambitions. In August, he used a Sinai terrorist attack that killed Egyptian soldiers as a pretext [4] to purge the Egyptian army of its top Mubarak-era holdovers. Now he has done the same with the judiciary.

Egypt’s judiciary also has pushed back against Morsi’s power grab. The Supreme Council of the Judiciary denounced Morsi’s unilateral assertion of power over the judiciary as “an unprecedented attack on judicial independence.” The Judges Club, an association of judges made up of many appointees by the Mubarak regime, called for a strike by courts across Egypt. But the judges alone will not be enough to reverse Morsi’s power grab. The key vote will be wielded by the armed forces. Morsi appears confident that he can count on support from key military leaders, whom he hand-picked after purging [4] the top ranks of Mubarak loyalists in August. While the army’s ultimate verdict on Morsi’s power grab is not yet apparent, Egypt’s investors voted with their wallets and withdrew their money from Egypt’s stock market [5], which plunged almost 10 percent on Sunday.

The big losers here are the Egyptian people. Their aspirations for freedom and democracy will likely get lost in the shuffle as Egypt’s “Arab Spring” descends into an Islamist winter. But the United States and its allies—particularly Israel—will also find their national interests undermined by the anti-Western drive of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood.

  • This week, the Supreme Court will decide whether to rule on same-sex marriage [7].
  • The U.S. government spends “an average of $1.5 billion in tax dollars per year devoted to getting out the message for various departments and policies,” reports [8] the Washington Guardian.
  • Did you shop on Black Friday? What about today’s Cyber Monday deals? Unfortunately, a lot of these items are still overpriced thanks to tariffs [10].

PRAYER REQUEST: "Iranian Ships Reportedly Being Loaded With Rockets," November 25

Israeli spy satellites have reportedly spotted Iranian ships being loaded with rockets that may be bound for Gaza.

According to the Sunday Times, the weapons are similar to those fired by Hamas toward Israel during the recent skirmishes across the Gaza border. The Times reports the cargo is expected to travel via the Red Sea and through Sudan and Egypt, a well-established route that Iran uses to smuggle arms into Gaza. “We believe that Iranian warships anchored in Eritrea will accompany the weapons ship as soon as it enters the Red Sea,” an Israeli source told the Times.

An Israeli defense source says his nation is prepared to “attack and destroy any shipment of arms to Gaza once we have spotted it,” regardless of the cease-fire agreement currently in place between Hamas and Israel. The Times reports the arms shipment was prepared last week at about the same time Israel and Hamas agreed to a cease-fire that ended the eight-day long Operation Pillar of Defense.

Over the weekend, senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar said the terrorist group would continue to arm itself with Iran’s help, even though the signed truce calls for the cessation of rocket fire aimed at Israel.  (Sources: Sunday Times, Haaretz, Fox News)

As the Lord leads, please pray:
  • For a lasting peace in the Middle East and for the peace of Jerusalem (Ps. 122)
  • That Israel will be able to defend itself against enemies such as Hamas and Iran
  • That allies such as the United States will continue to support Israel’s right to self-defense

PRAYER REQUEST: "Petraeus: Benghazi Attack Was Terrorism" (Saturday, November 17, 2012)

The September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya was an act of terrorism, according to the former CIA Director. In testimony Friday before Congress, David Petraeus said he believed it to be a terrorist attack immediately after the incident that killed four Americans, but didn’t say when the CIA reached that conclusion.Petraeus’ testimony also appeared to conflict with statements he made to Congress just three days after the attack, when he echoed the Obama administration’s contention that the incident was a spontaneous assault that was fueled by an online video and intensified after being overtaken by “extremists.” The latter message was the one delivered on numerous television appearances five days after the attack by Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Congress is trying to clarify where those initial “talking points” came from and why there was no reference to terrorist activity when Rice appeared on the September 16 news programs.
(Sources: Washington Post, ABC)

As the Lord leads, please pray:
  • For the truth about the Benghazi attack to be uncovered
  • For the families of those killed that they’ll get receive comfort after the deaths of their loved ones
  • That the investigation will continue and those responsible for any cover up be held accountable
"Who Altered the Benghazi Talking Points?" - Helle Dale November 19, 2012 http://blog.heritage.org/2012/11/19/who-altered-the-benghazi-talking-points/
Bipartisan outrage is a rarity in Washington these days, but the Obama Administration’s lack of transparency over Benghazi has provoked it.

This $64,000 question occupied Congress in open and closed hearings last week as well as the Sunday talk shows: Who altered the Administration’s talking points on the Benghazi terrorist attack? Lawmakers of both parties—such as Diane Feinstein (D–CA) and Mike Rogers (R–MI), the two senior members of the Senate Intelligence Committee who both appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press—are demanding answers.
The immediate target has been U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice, who did not testify last week.

The CIA talking points she was provided suggested that the attacks were caused by outrage over an anti-Muslim video and were not a systematically devised terrorist attack. Among the provided talking points were:
  • “The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the US Embassy in Cairo.”
  • “This assessment may change as additional information is collected and analyzed and as currently available information continues to be evaluated.”
  • “The investigation is on-going, and the US Government is working with Libyan authorities to bring to justice those responsible for the deaths of US citizens.”
Absent from the talking points is, of course, the word terrorism. Yet we know that U.S. intelligence officials knew within 24 hours of the attack that al-Qaeda was involved, so why would the CIA leave this information out of its talking points? With every new piece of information that has surfaced, more questions have been raised.

What we have learned over the past five days is that the divisions between the White House and the CIA are deepening. Recently resigned CIA director David Petraeus refused to accept blame for leaving the word terrorism out of the talking points in his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee and states that it was there when the talking points left the CIA. Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser, has likewise refused to accept blame for excising it. Suspicion meanwhile has fallen on the National Security Council’s Deputies Committee, an interagency group of political appointees.

Why is getting to the truth of the CIA talking points ultimately so important?
We need to know if the Obama Administration deliberately misled the American people and Congress about a terrorist attack on Americans. It is important to know if the CIA understands what is going on in the Middle East. If its analysts confuse organized terrorists with random mobs, they are obviously not up to the job, and their threat assessments are way off.

PRAYER REQUEST: "Egyptian President Faces Increasing Criticism," November 24 http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/Prayerwatch?pw=911

Protests continue in Egypt amidst increasing criticism of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi’s recent consolidation of power. On Saturday, Egypt’s highest judicial body joined in protesting a Morsi decree that disabled the courts and gave him authority over the country’s legislative, judicial and executive branches of government.

Morsi’s proclamation, which said that the courts couldn’t overturn any decree or law he has issued since taking office in June until a new constitution is finalized, was blasted by the Egyptian Supreme Judicial Council. They labeled it an “unprecedented attack on the independence of the judicial branch.” Mohamed El Baradei, the head of Egypt’s Constitution Party, called it the “language of a dictator,” as well as “without precedent and unimaginable.” Despite the protests, Morsi says his actions are in the best interests of the Egyptian people. “I have dedicated myself and my life for democracy and freedom,” he told supporters. “The steps I took are meant to achieve political and social stability.” (Sources: AP, CNN)

As the Lord leads, please pray:

  • For political stability in Egypt and the preservation of democracy
  • That the Muslim Brotherhood’s power in Egypt will be limited
  • That the Obama administration will keep a watchful eye on developments in Egypt

 - Erick Stakelbeck CBN News Terrorism Analyst, Nov. 7, 2012 http://blogs.cbn.com/stakelbeckonterror/archive/2012/11/07/what-are-the-national-security-implications-of-the-election.aspx

Last week, I posed five national security questions for the next American president. We now know that President Obama will remain Commander-in-Chief. Here are just some of my immediate thoughts on the implications of the voting public's decision--for America's security, the Middle East and beyond. And remember, now that reelection is secure, there are no restrainers for the Obama administration foreign policy agenda over the next four years.

-- It is now up to Israel--and Israel alone--to stop Iran's nuclear weapons program. Other than American conservatives, no one was more disappointed in last night's result than Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And with good reason.
-- The Obama administration will join the so-called "international community" in putting incredible pressure on Israel to give up land and establish a Palestinian state. And the administration may very well open formal dialogue with Hamas--the Muslim Brotherhood's Palestinian arm.
-- We will see a major war in the Middle East, as Israel's enemies judge that America has abandoned the Jewish State and become even more emboldened.
-- The Syria crisis will continue to spin out of control and could possibly reach a horrific climax.
-- President Obama will continue his push for a nuke-free world and slash America's nuclear stockpile. At the same time, America's rivals will increase their stockpiles or be disingenuous in their pledges to reduce nuclear arms (see: Russia).
-- North Korea, which has been relatively quiet since the death of Kim Jong-Il, will once again make serious noise on the Korean Peninsula.
-- The Muslim Brotherhood will continue its ascendancy in the Middle East and North Africa--I've had my eye on Jordan now for some time as another potential domino to fall into the MB's hands. And a Brotherhood-led Egypt will become an outright enemy of Israel and ditch the two nations' peace treaty.
-- At the same time, the Brotherhood and its American surrogates will continue to receive red-carpet treatment from the Obama administration.
-- The international push--led by Islamists--to criminalize so-called "defamation of religion" (aka free speech about Islam) will gain major traction, with the support of the Obama administration.
-- Turkey, led by its Islamist Prime Minister Erdogan (President Obama's close confidante) will grow into an increasingly bold, important--and dangerous--player in the Middle East.
-- The leadership in Russia and China will see America as feckless, toothless, and washed up and will pursue territorial expansion as a result. The response? U.S. defense spending will continue to decrease markedly.
-- We will never get the answers we seek about Benghazi and the mainstream media will assist its beloved administration in removing the Libya scandal from the headlines for good.
-- The Obama narrative that Al Qaeda is nearly defeated will continue--even as AQ affiliates in Africa and elsewhere carry out new attacks, quite possibly against U.S. and Jewish targets abroad.

It's a massive understatement to say this won't be pretty. But I am energized and ready to continue telling the truth about the threats we face as a nation no matter how unpopular it may be.

I believe America is in for some painfully difficult times at home and abroad. We are entering perilous and uncharted waters. But God still sits on the Throne. He has a plan and He will never forsake his people--those in America who still honor the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Let's keep up the fight and be Watchmen--and Women--on the wall. For times like these.

DECLARE YOUR SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL: I encourage you to go to the site below and consider signing the petition to Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring your support for Israel especially as it again faces a threat to its very survival. The petition is presented by the Christian group Liberty Counsel.  http://www.libertyaction.org/370/petition.asp?Ref_ID=18588&CID=370&RID=37375064  AND of course, try toPRAY daily for Israel.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: With Black Friday (referred to in yesterday's blog - #368) behind us but the Christmas shopping in full swing with now less than a month before Christmas, I offer the following essay that is a re-do of one I posted last year about an alternatve to the usual Christmas shopping. I do hope you will prayerfully consider what I share; I apprecate to hear your thoughts.

Christmas Shopping: Bah, Humbug! A Better Alternative

I was still attending middle school when one year, my Mom suddenly stormed into the living room, placed a small artifical tree on top of the filing cabinet, and announced, "I just called all the relatives. From now on, for Christmas, they don't have to give anything to us, we don't give anything to them." Because I naturally loved getting and just opening presents as much as anyone, I was of course very disappointed and even upset at my Mom. And yet, as I look back on her actions, I can easily understand how much of a hassle it was for my Mom (who worked in effect every day with my dad to run their mom-and-pop restaurant) each year to have to go shopping for our very large extended family, as well as for my parents' large group of friends. And of course, with our family not being Christian, the only meaning to the season was that it was a time of exhausting shopping for the purpose of gift exchanging.

Few would argue that in our increasingly secular society - where for awhile now children have even been told in school it's not even called a Christmas vacation but that they are on "winter break" and communities can be sued for even having a Christmas display outside City Hall - the true meaning of the season is lost on most Americans (as well as in other countries that "celebrate" it). People are now even lured away from spending their entire Thanksgiving holiday with their family so that they can get a head start on their Christmas shopping. How many even know the words of the traditional Christmas hyms that are sometimes merely background music in stores while they are shopping?

And why do most people madly dash about going from store to store to find that "perfect" gift for someone? Almost always, it is being done with the expectation that we will receive something of possibly equal value in return. If you think about it, this is NOT really true giving but merely a gift exchange, where people act out of the conscious or unconscious pressure to be sure to give something of equal value as what they will receive. And what is usually given is just something that person could have purchased for themselves. (I laugh when I think of how for years my brother and I  seemed to pass pack and forth the same $5 bill inside whatever birthday care we gave to each other year after year.)

In celebrating the birth of Jesus, THE Gift that can never be returned in kind by the recipient, I believe that we should focus on giving to those who we have NO expectation of ever returning our gift in kind, - those who are truly in need. Rather than going into debt (which the Bible repeatedly speaks against doing) and wearing ourselves out trying to find the 'perfect' gift for someone (who, again, probably has the means anyway to get that item for themselves), I believe we need to rethink our Christmas giving. I believe this will make this season a whole lot less focused on buying things and thus remove the commericialization from the Christmas season. By focusing on giving to those who have truly needy, we will more accurately reflect what God did when He came in the person of the CHRIST of Christmas.

Therefore, I would like to challenge you to meet with the members of your family (and contact others  whom you have given Christmas gifts to in the past) and explain what I have shared above. Afterwards, I then hope you and the members of your family will consider doing away with Christmas shopping, except for most children still in grade school. Instead,  I encourage you to send each person on your gift list a Christmas card in which you explan to them that in lieu of a gift, you are giving what you would have spent as a contribution to a ministry or organzaton that helps people in need. Also, you can name the specific organization "their" gift went to – either one to whom you are in the habit of giving; a particular missionary you or your church supports, or one of the organizations below that I support and whch you may not be familiar with and that I encourage you to consider gving to:

CareNet (www.care-net.org) - It serves the thousands of pregnancy resource centers (that serves women who might otherwise choose to abort their unborn child).
Focus on the Family (www.family.org) - It provides a huge variety of services to individuals and families in need. I particularly support their burden to help equip pregnancy resource centers with ultrasound machines.
Prison Fellowship's Angel Tree project (www.prisonfellowship.org) - It  gives gifts to children of those in prison.
Life Outreach International (www.lifetoday.org) - It has a variety of projects - to dig water wells, feed hungry, rescue those caught in sex trafficking, etc.
Open Doors (www.opendoors.org) - They minister to believers being persecuted in dozens of countries around the world. (It is headed by Brother Andrew of "God's Smuggler" fame.)
Freedom Alliance (www.freedomalliance.org) - It is "an educational and charitable organization which sponsors numerous program activities aimed at supporting and honoring our service members and their families." (This is the only organization on this list that I don't believe is a Christian ministry.)

Of course, this idea may not be well received  by children who are no longer in grade school. But just consider how doing this will teach them about the true spirit of giving and in particular how they can truly honor and celebrate God in Christ coming to GIVE Himself for us. And, instead of consumng their time with rushing around buyng gifts, people could spend that time reading and studying God's Word  AND directly serving others in their community. Over tme, I  believe that each one who decides to do this non-traditional approach to Christmas giving will only reap rich rewards and will most honor the Christ of Christmas.

P.S. -This doesn't mean that there cannot be a  gift exchange. Maybe members of the family can just draw names and be given a $5 or $10 limit on getting a gift for the person whose name they drew. Such limited giving would keep it all simple, be anything but costly, and would hardly be a tme consumng activity.

PRAYER REQUEST: "Cease-Fire Between Israel and Hamas Holding "(Thursday, November 22, 2012) http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/Prayerwatch?pw=905

A fragile cease-fire between Israel and Hamas continued to hold Thursday as Gaza residents began clearing rubble from bombed out areas.

Work crews were busy repairing damaged electrical wires and collecting garbage while shop owners assed the damage from eight days of counter attacks from the Israeli military, launched in retribution for Palestinian rocket attacks. President Barack Obama hailed the Egyptian-brokered agreement ending the fighting that killed more than 140 Palestinians and five Israelis. A White House spokesman says Obama talked to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and commended him for agreeing to the ceasefire proposal. The agreement came after two days of shuttle diplomacy involving Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and makes Egypt a key player in keeping the peace. The agreement will "improve conditions for the people of Gaza and provide security for the people of Israel," Clinton said at the Cairo news conference announcing the accord.

As the Lord leads, please pray:

  • For continued peace in the Middle East and that both sides will honor the agreement
  • That the U.S. will continue to stand with Israel and their right to defend themselves
  • That world powers and militant organizations will recognize Israel’s right to exist and defend themselves.

NOTE: I wasn't planning to go to any Black Frday sales (as I never have) but then I found a one-day sale of pet food for my cat on the internet yesteday and  so there I was just after 7 a.m. this morning at my local pet store. Praise God I didn't have to deal with any crowds or parking problems but wow! was it cold!!  Be sure to check tomorrow's post for a special re-post of my answer to  the annual Christmas shopping craziness.

"Looking for Black Friday Deals?" - By Katherine Elliott  Novembe 23, 2012  http://blog.heritage.org/2012/11/23/looking-for-black-friday-deals/

Would it surprise you to know that many of the Black Friday items for sale that cause so much frenzy are highly overpriced due to tariffs?

Black Friday, of course, is the day when hundreds of people wait outside of stores hours ahead of their opening to get a steal on sale-priced merchandise. In 2011, a record $52.4 billion was spent on Black Friday weekend, compared to $45 billion in 2010, according to the National Retail Federation. Just last year, two people were shot and 15 were pepper sprayed on Black Friday.

The most sought-after items on Black Friday are clothing, electronics, and home decor. Clothing and clothing accessories comprised 51.4 percent of all the items bought on Black Friday last year.
Clothing also has one of the highest tariffs of all items bought on Black Friday. Individuals who would benefit the most from lower prices face the highest tariffs, because lower-end items are taxed more heavily than higher-end items. For example, clothing made of polyester can be taxed at upwards of 32 percent, while clothing made of cashmere is taxed at a mere 4 percent.

As Ed Gresser at Progressive Economy has pointed out, with the exception of free trade agreements, no tariff elimination bills have passed Congress in almost 100 years. President Woodrow Wilson’s tax reform acts in 1913 are the most recent.

So while Americans fight in a frenzy to get the best deals on Black Friday, they won’t be saving as much as they think because of high U.S. tariffs. That’s the real steal.

PRAYER REQUEST:  As the Lord leads, please pray:
  • That Americans would be conscientious about purchases, and good stewards of their money.
  • That Americans would not add to their load of debt by overuse of credit cards.

(2) The following is the second of two posts recognizing Thanksgiving. I hope that you had a  chance to read yesterday's post (1) on remembering the legacy of the Pilgrims.

PRAYER REQUEST: Though a cease fire has been arranged between Israel and Hamas, it only refers to the firing of rockets by Hamas into Israel. Just hours before the agreement was announced, there was a Hamas attack on a bus in Israel. Therefore, pleasse continue to pray for the people of Israel being protected from ANY kind of attack and that Hamas will be rightly cited for their aggression by the world press and the nations of the world.

The Object of Our Thanks
vpthanksgiving

The Thanksgiving Solution

Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Psalm 105:1

...it is the will of God for those who are in Christ Jesus to give thanks in every situation and all circumstances. Even when our circumstances are extremely favorable, therefore, our giving of thanks must reach beyond them, beyond any experience of blessing, to acknowledge and applaud the One Who orders all our circumstances according to His wise, good, and perfect will. At their best the circumstances of our lives should serve above all to remind us of God, Who grtants us His
blessings in His way and time. At their most disagreeable, our circumstances should do precisely the same. As giving thanks achieves this focus, without regard for the specific nature of our circumstances, feeling thanks will grow in us more and more. The gratitude we feel, in other words, will be the upshot of the thanks we give. If we try to base thanksgiving the other way around, we will not fulfill the will of God for us.

What this means is that we need at all times to have a clear and unshakable sense of God – Who He is, how He relates to us, the place our lives occupy within His economy, and so forth. For when our focus is on God, and we are growing in the knowledge of Him, nothing in our circumstances will be able to deter or distract us from wanting to celebrate His eternal goodness, wisdom, power, and love. Allow me to make a few observations concerning God which it will be good for us to bear in mind at all times, if we are to succeed in practicing thanksgiving as He intends.

First, God is our Creator. Apart from Him neither we nor anything in the vast cosmos would exist. God was not required to create us. He does not need us and He gains no glory from us, save that of His own which we refract back to Him. God made us because of love, because of a free desire within Himself to express His love into a creation that includes us and all the people in our lives. Our very being, therefore, is a platform for the manifestation of the eternal and pure love of God.

Second, not only is God our Creator, but He is also sovereign. That is, nothing that exists continues to exist apart from His intimate and personal attention to every single detail of all that is. Jesus Christ, the Word of God, upholds the world and all things in it by His powerful Word (Heb. 1:3). While we can understand this to be so, we cannot understand the mechanics of it, except to realize that, if God the Word should ever cease speaking His power toward us – whatever that means – we would certainly cease to exist. We and the cosmos we inhabit are not the products of eternal matter randomly colliding, expanding, and morphing over vast eons of time. Nor is our continued existence merely the result of impersonal “laws” of chemistry or physics. We are here because of God, and we continue to be here because He upholds and provides for every aspect of our being.

Finally, God’s essential disposition toward all His creatures is love. He loves the vast cosmos which He created and sustains (Jn. 3:16). He loves even His enemies, who ignore or deny Him, or even mount attacks against His holy name and Law (Matt. 5:43-48; cf. Ps. 52:1). And He loves those He has redeemed through Jesus Christ our Lord. In His love for us He thinks good thoughts toward us and bears good gifts to us – all the innumerable blessings by which we survive and thrive each day. These are all the good gifts of our loving God, Who made us and sustains us solely because He is love.

Does such a God deserve the thanks of His creatures? Assuredly, He does. What ingrates we are who take for granted our blessings, our lives, our very existence, and fail to give thanks to God in every situation and all circumstances. We give thanks to God, not because of the circumstances of our lives, but because of the unfathomable goodness and steadfast grace of our life-giving and life-sustaining God.

[Action Point]  Write out a brief prayer of thanks to God, based on Who you understand Him to be. Today, use that prayer for giving thanks to the Lord, just because of Who He is. Share your prayer with some Christian friends, and urge them to write a prayer of their own to use and share with others.

#365 (11/21) - Happy Thanksgiving!(1) Remembering the Legacy of the Pilgrims

PRAYER REQUEST: Re: the Continued Fighting Between Israel and Hamas
  • That a ceasefire will be brokered among the parties.
  • That any ceasefire will not simply delay Israel being able to effectively neutralize the threat posed to their security.
  • About the intentions of the Muslim Brotherhood and their representatives in Egypt and Turkey, and whether an honest deal can be struck.
  • About the influence of Iran in the supply of arms to Hamas through Egypt.

(2) The following is the first of two posts recognizing Thanksgiving. I hope that you will take a moment tomorow to check out the second post speaking to this most special American holiday.

[The following is a speech delivered by Dr. D. James Kennedy at the Rededication of the National Monument to the Forefathers in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on August 6, 1989, for the Centennial Celebration (1889-1989), sponsored by the Pilgrim Society, Plymouth, Massachusetts.]

“In the Name of God, Amen.” Thus began the Compact signed in the captain’s quarters on the Mayflower as it stood at anchor off Provincetown Bay. “In the Name of God. Amen.” Thus began the dedicatory address by William Breckinridge for the monument to the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts, 100 years ago.

“In the Name of God” is where America began, and though they have long been dead, the Pilgrims may still speak to us through this monument, that we might learn something of those grand ideals, those spiritual truths, that so gripped their lives and so changed the world.

At Plymouth, the pre-eminent statue is the great figure of Faith. It was faith that animated the Pilgrims. It was their faith in the living God that caused them to give up their homes, to give up their native land. It was their faith that gave them the courage to set sail in the Mayflower. It was their faith that strengthened them.

They have been called the “People of the Book” —the Scriptures. They had discovered the Scriptures and had read them for themselves. They had learned of the precious Savior, who offered them freely the gift of eternal life, if they would but trust in Him … and trust they did. Their hearts were lifted upward, and they placed their hopes in that One who loved them and died for them and rose again.

Therefore, this statue at Plymouth has its finger lifted to Heaven. Someone has said that faith is simply pointing away from ourselves unto the Living God—unto Jesus Christ. For a Christian, that is what his faith is. That was their faith.

Around the base of the great statue at Plymouth are four other statues that embody some of the virtues most meaningful to the Pilgrims: liberty, morality, law, and education. I am going to begin where most people usually end, with [1] a statue to Liberty. We see a man dressed in Roman armor, and in his arms a sword faced backward, so that it is not threatening, with a conquered lion over his back. Here is depicted what the Pilgrims sought: liberty of conscience, religious liberty, and civil liberty.

The second [2] statue is the statue to Morality, holding the Ten Commandments in one hand and the scroll of the book of Revelation in the other. This showed that the Pilgrims believed that morality came from the Scriptures, from the Old Testament and the New Testament—that ethics derived from religion.
This brings us to the third [3] statue in the memorial at Plymouth—the great statue of Law. The Pilgrims believed that law was based upon morality; so we have the three-tiered cake of religion, morality, and law. One is based upon the other; it cannot be any other way.

The last statue at the back of this great Plymouth monument is the statue to Education. For 210 years, from 1620 to 1830, virtually all of the education in this country was private and religious—Christian in nature, with very few exceptions.

The Puritan Governor Bradford said of the Pilgrims:  “… a great hope and inward zeal they had of laying some good foundation, or at least make some way thereunto, for the propagating and advancing the gospel of the kingdom of Christ in those remote parts of the world; yea, though they should be but even as steppingstones unto others for the performing of so great a work.”

May we, the inheritors of their great legacy, rededicate ourselves to those spiritual and godly ideals so that this country might, indeed, be a nation set on a hill for all the world to see, to admire, and to emulate.

#364 (11/20) - "The Petraeus Affair:Why He Should Have Resigned"

PRAYER REQUESTS:

"Fiscal Cliff Looms; President Meets with Congressional Leaders"  - November 16

"President Obama and top congressional leaders on Friday convened their first "fiscal cliff" summit, seeking to avert an economically-toxic package of sweeping tax hikes and deep spending cuts that will take effect in 45 days without a bipartisan deal. .. The stakes could not be higher: the Congressional Budget Office reported earlier this month that failure to reach a compromise -- triggering tax increases on all Americans and deep cuts to government spending on social programs and defense -- would send the U.S. economy back into recession and send unemployment skyrocketing." (Sources: ABC News, Wall Street Journal)

As the Lord leads, please pray:

  • For Congressional leaders to set aside partisanship and seek a spirit of cooperation in the talks about the national economy.
  • About the level of debt that America has, and the essential steps to reduce it.
And in regards to the story below, continue to pray for General Petraeus and his wife to be able to reconcile. Also, pray that God would find ways to restore him to a role of service to his country.

#363 (11/19) - "Church Demolished: Russia's Fading Religious Freedom"

MOSCOW -- A recent nighttime raid and destruction of an evangelical church outside Moscow raised concerns that religious freedom is fading in Russia. That's because police simply watched as dozens of men with heavy machinery demolished the Holy Trinity Pentecostal congregation. Some fear its part of a threatening pattern against Russia's evangelical Christians.
