No one can deny how cute this picture is. But sadly the story behind the smiling twin brothers is a sad one because one of the tots is in a fight for his life. Here’s more from a local TV station in Florida:
Photos of two hugging newborns in Port St. Lucie are bringing smiles to people worldwide, but it’s the story behind the image that may bring you to tears.
The story begins with photos of tiny Mason and his brother Hawk, on a ventilator. The nurse placed Mason, fussy at the time, next to his brother in an effort to soothe him.
“So we laid them there and all of the sudden, as soon as he felt Hawk he reached his arm out and grabbed him and just started to smile,” said Brandy Guettler, the mother of the twins. If that were the end of the story, it would be one of a cute picture bribing smiles to peoples faces. Instead, the rest of the story is more grim and its one that needs your prayer.
“The whole ordeal is as bad as you can get,” said Tommy Buchmeyer, the father of the twins.
A genetic test changed everything.
Doctors diagnosed Hawk, now intubated at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, with a rare, and often fatal condition called CDH, or Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.
Some babies are born with a rare birth defect called congenital diaphragmatic hernia, which is a condition that causes the stomach and intestines to develop in the child’s chest cavity because of a hole in the diaphragm. When the abdominal organs are in the chest cavity, the lungs are not able to fully develop and the abdominal organs can push on the heart and prevent it from growing normally. Doctors often suggest abortion with such babies.
However, doctors can help and babies with such conditions have surgery to move their stomach and intestines down.
Unfortunately, our society clings to the ideology that it would be more humane to allow a disabled child to die from abortion, than to suffer through hardship after their birth.
