#3261 (1/31) SUNDAY SPECIAL: "Our Politics Is Cracking Under the Weight of a Thinning Civil Society"

"OUR POLITICS IS CRACKING UNDER THE WEIGHT OF A THINNING CIVIL SOCIETY"-  John Stonestreet, Breakpoint.org, 01/15/21; https://breakpoint.org/our-politics-is-cracking-under-the-weight-of-a-thinning-civil-society [NOTE: This article was posted more than 2 weeks ago but it still speaks of things we need to consider as believers.]

... More than a week after the storming of the Capitol, five Americans have died, the House of Representatives has impeached the President for a second time, Twitter and other social platforms have permanently banned the sitting President of the United States, Amazon Web Services shut down alternative social media site Parler, and National Guard forces are being deployed, with 20,000 troops scheduled to surround the Capitol because, according to the FBI, armed groups are planning to protest the Inauguration, not only in Washington, D.C., but in all fifty states.

There are immediate causes, of course, for the chaos that unfolded last Wednesday. Over 70 million Americans are unhappy with and deeply worried about the implications of the presidential election and, no less important, the Georgia Senate runoffs. Among that number, a sizeable group believes the election was stolen, and just-as-deeply disbelieve all media personalities, investigators, elected officials of either party, or judges who say otherwise. Among that group, agitators, after making their violent intentions clear on social media, successfully incited Trump supporters to mob the Capitol.

Still, even the most-crafty agitator can only agitate a crowd that is agitate-able. One of the main headlines, not just of Wednesday but all of 2020, is just how dangerously on-edge Americans are. Only an analysis that looks beyond the rage of this day or that day, one that takes seriously the “pre-existing conditions” of our national tinderbox, will ultimately be helpful in pulling us back from the precipice.

For decades, sociologists have warned just how thin American civil society has become, replaced by a growing individualism that isolates Americans from the relationships and loyalties that once nurtured a thick social fabric. This is an unsustainable path. The collapse of the family, declining church attendance, institutions losing their integrity and our trust, and the various technological vortices keeping us from our neighbors are all catalytic factors in what’s been rightly called “deaths from despair” (increasing suicide rates, loneliness, addictions) and could be called “acts of desperation” (mass violence, rioting, and self-mutilation)

As civil society thins and as Americans become less connected to the pre-political aspects of life, the cultural weight lands on politics. To put it bluntly, our politics cannot handle the amount of weight we currently expect of it. As a result, we are experiencing two unsustainable consequences.

First, a culture that lacks the necessary resources to produce good citizens and cultivate self-control. Family, Church, community life, and volunteer groups play many roles in a society, but none of these roles more important than providing a vision of what it means to live together, advancing things like civility and the common good.

Now this point should be obvious, but the state cannot function for long without good citizens. After all, it has no resources of its own, other than power. And yet, just as the state needs a moral citizenry to keep it from abusing its power, citizens need a properly functioning state to secure rights and liberty. The state, in and of itself, is wholly inadequate to produce the citizens it needs in order to function well. That must be done elsewhere, and herein lies an essential ingredient of our current crisis.

Second, when too much weight of a culture is placed on politics, when people turn exclusively (or even primarily) to politics to define and solve their problems or secure their hope, the stakes become too high. A zero-sum, winner-take-all, win-or-die kind of politics that places too much weight on the next election, the next bill, the next scandal, the next “breaking story from Washington.” The anxiety level becomes too much for people to bear.

On the opposite extreme from those who want to remove Christians from politics are those Christians who think political levers should be used as power plays. But that’s merely Christianizing a secular methodology; it will never work. If we hope to be part of a solution and not add kindling to this explosive environment, we’ll need clear and compelling teaching on what politics is ultimately for, what it’s not for, and how it fits in the larger economy of pre-political realities and institutions.

Without a doubt, difficult days lie ahead for anyone committed to the sanctity of human life, sexual restraint, or religious freedom. In our political and pre-political efforts, then, what the world needs most, as Chuck Colson said, is for the Church to be the Church. The thinning of civil society is our nation’s greatest challenge. It is also among the Church’s greatest opportunities.

We’ve been appointed to this time and this place (Acts 17:26), but others have gone before us, and we must learn from them. We need not re-invent the wheel. Like those whose remarkable faith is now sight, we must roll-up our sleeves and double down on loving God and neighbor, proclaiming what is true and elevating what is good, fighting for what matters but never placing our hope in horses, chariots, or elections. Only in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who was and is and is to come.

#3260 (1/30) PRO-LIFE SAT: "New Poll Shows 80% of Millennials Oppose Abortions Up to Birth, 57% Oppose Roe v. Wade"

"NEW POLLS SHOWS 80% OF MILLENIALS OPPOSE ABORTIONS UP TO BIRTH, 57% OPPOSE ROE V WADE" -  Students For Life,  JAN 27, 2021; https://www.lifenews.com/2021/01/27/new-poll-shows-80-of-millennials-oppose-abortions-up-to-birth-57-oppose-roe-v-wade/ [AS I SEE IT: What encouraging news! As I have said repeatedly, our prayers should be not just for the end of Roe V Wade in America, but for more and more young mothers in crisis pregnancies choosing LIFE for their unborn child and more and more regarding abortion in some form (which I believe will somehow always be available) to be anathema! to more and more. Be encouraged with me and join me in praying for this to become more and more true. PTL! - Stan]

Students for Life of America released a new poll, a project of the organization’s Institute for Pro-Life Advancement, evaluating how the newest voters, Millennials and Gen Z (ages 18-34), view some of the cutting-edge policy discussions most timely in the debate over abortion.

This demographic is widely reported as being almost entirely in support of abortion as it is allowed through Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton – through all 9 months, for any reason whatsoever, and sometimes with taxpayer funding.

“As an organization of mostly Millennials and Gen Z, we’ve been frustrated by all the sweeping statements made about our views on the human rights issue of the day. And as the age range most targeted for abortion, the views of Millennials an Gen Z on an industry that has ended the lives of one-quarter of our generation are extremely relevant,” said Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins. “Far from embracing Planned Parenthood and the Democratic Party Line, Millennials and Gen Z have a more nuanced view of abortion that embraces a number of pro-life positions: Limits on abortion and taxpayer funding were supported, Reversing Roe was acceptable; and Voting on abortion policy embraced.

“Asked directly about reversing Roe to return the issue of abortion to the states, more Millennials and Gen Z supported reversing Roe and sending abortion policy to the voters than opposed it, by a margin of 44 % in favor to 36 % opposed and 18 % unsure. The number of respondents opposing Roe and Doe nearly doubled after learning more about what the law allows. This number is extraordinary considering Planned Parenthood claims that Roe is popular and that 77 percent of the American people oppose reversing it, which would simply return the issue of abortion to the states where the people could have a voice and a vote on life-related policy.

When they learn about what Roe v. Wade actually does, Millennial and Gen Z oppose it. Looking at the big picture, 57 % to 30 % oppose Roe when they learn it allows for abortion through all 9 months. This is an increase of 6 percent, as a 2019 SFLA poll found that 51 % supported reversing Roe when they learned about its extremism.

“Millennials and Gen Z were also supportive of the free speech rights of their pro-life fellow students and of requiring examinations before and after the sale and use of dangerous Chemical Abortion Pills. They opposed the ‘No Test’ protocol for Chemical Abortion allowing on-line sales of the life-ending drugs to stop abusers from getting the pills anonymously to slip to women without their knowledge and consent. Issue by issue, the perspectives of young American voters targeted for abortion are very different from the talking points of the powerful abortion lobby, and there is common ground for those who want to find it.”

Key Findings:

·Almost 7 out of 10 Millennials and Gen Z want to vote on abortion-related policy.

·Less than 2 out of 10 want unlimited abortion through all 9 months, for any reason at all and sometimes with taxpayer funding, which Roe allows.

·More than 7 out of 10 support limits on abortion.

     · The Hyde Amendment and Mexico City policy have support. Millennial and Gen Z taxpayers do not want their money used to pay for abortions, whether in the US (48%) or worldwide (53%).

·6 in 10 believe schools should protect students’ free speech rights.

·Almost HALF supported banning abortion after a heartbeat detected.

·By a margin of 55 % to 25 %, Millennials and Gen Z supported requiring in-person purchase of deadly Chemical Abortion Pills to prevent Abusers from anonymously buying them on-line to slip to women without their consent.

·Millennials and Gen Z, by a margin of 57 % to 30 %, oppose Roe when they learn it allows for abortion through all 9 months.

This online quantitative research was conducted by The Polling Company between January 7 – 11, 2021 among 800 registered voters age 18 – 34. Respondents self-identified themselves as 30% Republican, 36% Democrat, and 34% Independent. Margin of error: ± 3.46%

#3259 (1/29) "Media May Ignore It, but Biden Presidency Is Already Radical"

"MEDIA MAY IGNORE IT, BUT BIDEN PRESIDENCY IS ALREADY RADICAL" - Ben Shapiro / @benshapiro / January 27, 2021 - https://www.dailysignal.com/2021/01/27/the-media-may-ignore-but-bidens-presidency-is-already-radical

President Joe Biden speaks about the coronavirus pandemic in the State Dining Room of the White House Jan. 26, 2021, in Washington, D.C. (Photo: Doug Mills-Pool/Getty Images)

For four years, we were informed by our establishment media that President Donald Trump’s behavior was “not normal.” The abnormality of Trump’s behavior became a near rallying cry for the self-appointed heroes of journalism, who spent every waking hour poring over his bizarre tweets and his bloviating self-absorption. The media dedicated themselves to preventing Trump’s supposed normalization.

Now, the media inform us, we have been graced by the most normal normal person to have ever normalled: President Joe Biden. Biden, they proclaim, is utterly boring, nondescript, barely worthy of coverage. His administration, too, is paradigmatically normal. Yascha Mounk of The Atlantic tweets, “It is so nice to have a boring President.” Alleged media watchdog Brian Stelter asked this week whether Biden is “making the news boring again,” adding, “The Biden White House is clearly a break from the chaos and incompetence of Trump world.”

The Left has declared war on our culture, but we should never back down, nor compromise our principles.

For his part, Biden obviously revels in this sort of coverage. This week, his favorite ice cream flavor (chocolate chip) was tweeted out as well as a retweet of first lady Jill Biden’s announcement that Champ and Major, the new first pets, had entered the White House. On a personal level, Biden is clearly more “normal” than Trump—although treating Biden, a career politician worth nearly $10 million, as the height of normality is rather stunning.

The goal for the establishment media isn’t to point out merely that Biden is a sort of American Everyman. It’s to use that supposed normalcy to disguise the fact that his agenda is absolutely abnormal.

The dirty little secret of the Trump administration is that despite Trump’s personal abnormality, his agenda was well in line with past precedent, and with mainstream American opinions on everything from taxes to military policy. Trump did not radically shift American policy. Biden will. Within the first five days of his presidency, he issued 30 executive orders, compared with four for Trump, five for Barack Obama, and zero for George W. Bush.

Those executive orders included endorsement of radical reinterpretation of American history: killing the Keystone XL pipeline, along with its attendant estimated 11,000 American jobs; forcing the military to allow troops to undergo gender reassignment surgery; and forcing federally funded institutions to allow biological men who identify as transgender to compete alongside biological women, among others. He is reportedly pursuing an immigration plan directed toward reopening America’s borders. He has staffed his Cabinet by intersectional box-checking.

Biden’s policy is indeed radical. But because Biden is presented as a normal person, we’re supposed to ignore all of that. We’re supposed to simply be grateful for the “return to normalcy”—complete with caving to the teachers unions that seek to keep schools closed indeterminately, reentering a long-dead deal with the Iranian theocracy, firing government staffers with whom he disagrees, and lying openly about the vaccine distribution plan he inherited.

Meanwhile, our media pat themselves on the back. It’s rare to see a profession declare itself irrelevant, but that’s what many in the media are doing these days. According to Stelter, it’s “refreshing” that Biden’s team promises accountability and transparency. According to Margaret Sullivan of The Washington Post, the media must learn their lesson from the Trump era and cover Democrats more sycophantically.

Joe Biden may be a relatively normal guy. But none of this is normal. And pretending it is represents just another way for the media to reject legitimate criticisms of an administration seeking radicalism right off the bat.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, it’s important to reflect on the horrific persecution of the Jewish people by Nazi Germany, and to be aware of the rise in anti-Semitism occurring around the world today.      On Holocaust Remembrance Day, it’s important to reflect on the horrific persecution of the Jewish people by Nazi Germany, and to be aware of the rise in anti-Semitism occurring around the world today. Pictured: The main gate of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp. (Photo: Damian Klamka/SOPA Images/LightRocket/Getty Images)

On this day [Jan. 27th] 76 years ago, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp, where Nazi forces murdered more than 1.1 million people, the vast majority of them Jews. Greeted by starving prisoners rejoicing at their arrival, piles of corpses, and unthinkable living conditions, the unknowing Soviet troops were horrified by what they saw.

As more became known about the Nazi’s extermination program, Auschwitz came to represent what may be the greatest anti-human crime in history: the systematic effort to destroy the Jewish people wherever they could be found on the globeAccordingly, Jan. 27 is commemorated as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This commemoration is about that crime against one people in a specific place and time—the Jews who fell under Nazi control before May 10, 1945.

As we recall the relentless Nazi effort to destroy the Jewish people, it is imperative that we also not overlook the current resurgence of Jew-hatred around the globe. The anxiety and social strain of the current pandemic has served as an occasion for some to deploy modernized themes of ancient Jew-hatred. Abhorrent conspiracy theories simmered online, especially in Europe, during the pandemic. Hate-filled comments accused Jews of creating and spreading COVID-19 or, alternatively, asserting that the virus was simply a “hoax” concocted by Jews. Such absurd competing accusations demonstrate how anti-Semitism often manifests itself in expressions of irrational sentiment and bigotry.

Hatred toward Jews does not merely fester secretly online. In many Western countries, it thrives out in the open under the socially acceptable rubric of “anti-Zionism.” By claiming that the only-Jewish state is inherently racist, akin to the South African apartheid regime, anti-Zionism denies the Jewish people their right to self-determination in a state and land of their own. Anti-Zionism is particularly active on American university campuses, where the “Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions” movement singles out Israel for economic punishment.

According to U.N. Watch, Israel has received 112 condemnatory resolutions from the U.N. General Assembly since 2015, many times more that notorious human rights abusers like North Korea, Myanmar, and Syria over that span of time. This widely disproportionate targeting of the Jewish state indicates a prevalent anti-Jewish sentiment among world leaders.  In its annual report in 2020, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom expressed serious concern over the rise of anti-Semitism in the world, especially in Europe.  It cited the examples of a 27% increase in anti-Semitic acts in France in 2019, a 7% increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the United Kingdom in 2019, and a pattern of anti-Semitic bullying in Sweden.

As the situation has grown more perilous for Jews in Europe, a 2019 survey found that 41% of young Jewish Europeans have considered emigrating from their native lands out of concern for their safety. Many Jews are now making plans to leave for Israel as many European governments have lost control of the situation, with anti-Semitism becoming more widespread and violent. This reality would have been unimaginable 20 years ago. In the Middle East, animus towards Jews runs hot and is ubiquitous. Iran stands apart as a country that espouses and promulgates the most vicious Jew-hatred. It continues to be the only government in the world that denies the Holocaust as a matter of state policy.

Former U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Elan Carr has called Iran the “world’s chief trafficker in anti-Semitism.” Justifying its aggressive foreign policy of denying Israel’s right to exist, Iranian leaders spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories while referring to Israel as a “cancerous tumor.”

Even the United States has seen the emergence of anti-Semitism. On college campuses, the political left and venomous anti=Semitic organizations like Students for Justice in Palestine have come to dominate the political debate. There the anti-Semitism is masked, as it is in many places, as anti-Zionism, but that covering is only a thin veneer.

There is also a violent strand of American Jew-hatred that has its roots in the political fringe-right. Recent attacks at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and the Chabad synagogue in Poway, California, have born this out. Simultaneously, those acts of murder disabused Americans of any notion that Jewish houses of worship were safe in the United States.

Unfortunately, studies show declining knowledge about the Holocaust among younger Americans. One survey found that that 63% of American millennials and Generation Z did not know that 6 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, and over half of those thought the death toll was fewer than 2 million. Another article tells us that two-thirds of millennials do not know what Auschwitz stands for and what took place there. Many cannot place the Holocaust within the framework of World War II. This is a disastrous place for our nation to be.

On this day, we commemorate the millions of innocent Jews who were cruelly imprisoned, tortured, and murdered on an industrial scale. Remembrance must also incorporate a commitment that such evil must “never again” take place. Jews know that this hatred has manifested itself against them in many places over millennia. Whether it be in Queen Esther’s biblical Persia, Judea’s destruction by the Romans, or 15th century Spain—this is a recurring evil that knows no parallel human history.

Therefore, it is necessary that we set aside this day each year to remember the Holocaust. We must use this annual occasion to recommit ourselves to protect the Jewish people as fellow human beings. But they must also be defended as a persecuted minority that stands for a set of unique religious and cultural beliefs that make them distinct. Tyrants, like Hitler, have raged that Jews answer to a higher authority and will not yield. On this point, we must stand with the Jews every day of the year

“INTERCESSORS ARE THE RUDDER” – A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT - Wanda Alger, June 28th, 2017; https://www.getamericapraying.com/blog/I was recently given a word by my good friend, Bill Yount. His word greatly encouraged me as an intercessor. Working for Intercessors for America, I soon realized it was not just a word for me, but for all who have been praying for our nation, wondering if their prayers are truly making any difference. Bill told me, “I kept seeing you as a small rudder on a huge ship. Hidden, but giving guidance. Although it seemed slow it was turning the whole ship. Patience was needed to see the impact of your…ministry. I sense the Lord saying, ‘Don’t jump ship! I’ve made you the rudder!’ ” I was immediately touched in my spirit by this encouragement, knowing that our seemingly small place in prayer was having a great impact.
James 3:4 talks about the power of a small rudder to steer a large ship. In this scripture about the power of our tongue, consider the power of prophetic intercession! In the Forerunner Commentary on this verse we read, “…rudders manipulate the course of immense ocean vessels with a slight movement of a pilot’s hand. Since it is underwater and aft, the rudder of a ship does its work UNSEEN. A passenger is ignorant of its movements most of the time. Yet, when it is in proper working order, the rudder holds more power over the ship than the wind. The wind will blow, toss, even destroy the ship’s rigging, but the rudder guides the ship exactly where it directs.”
This is God’s promise to the intercessors in this hour of national turbulence. Don’t stop praying! Your prayers have great power to turn the ship! Continue praying, interceding, and discerning the workings and movements of the Holy Spirit, being faithful to God’s commands. As we come together to declare God’s faithfulness, this nation will, once again, head in the direction that God intends. Don’t give up and don’t give in. Regardless of the winds of adversity and the fires of the enemy, God’s people have a power that cannot be matched. Let us join in faith and continue to pray and speak of God’s faithfulness in order to bring God’s people and this nation into the fullness of God’s plans. Note this additional encouragement from God’s word:
Colossians 2:15 – “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (ESV).
Psalm 33:8-11 – “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.”

PRAY FOR AMERICA: THANK GOD for His many blessings on America throughout it's history. May we then ask that AMERICA once again be a blessing TO GOD, by once again submitting to HIS will in our affairs - both personal and national - that He may truly "heal our land." (2 Chron. 7:14) Short of that, we should not be saying "God Bless America"but instead "God be merciful towards America!"
PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS 1) Pray for President Trump and his advisers, that they would select Godly leaders at the federal level who will be accountable to do an excellent job (or be fired!) ; that he would seek God's wisdom and be enabled to lead our country effectively in the years ahead; and 2) Pray our leaders at every level of government will Spirit-filled, leading us with Godly wisdom and integrity; that they will  only pass legislation and enact policies that will benefit Americans today as well as future generations and NOT do any lasting harm.
SUPREME COURT: PRAY that the justices will only hand down decisions that are Constitutionally sound and in the best interests of our country now and for future generations.

STANDING STRONG THROUGH THE STORM - OpenDoorsUSA.org
At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.- 2 Tim. 4:16
SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO SUFFER
The Apostle Paul knew exactly what it was like to be alone, to be deserted by all who called themselves “brothers” and “sisters.” A former colleague who has done considerable travel among the persecuted says, “It is hard to believe that Christians are the largest persecuted group in the world today. But it is even more difficult to believe that this is so seldom mentioned in our gatherings and church services. More Christians know the names of their favorite actors than their fellow believers who are in prison.”
He continues, “With every trip something in my heart breaks as I hear the echoes of suffering:
I remember the echoes of an Egyptian mother as she shared how her young boy was stuck in a haystack because she refused to deny Jesus.
I remember the sounds of weeping as fellow students in Indonesia shared how Sariman, their co-student, was hacked to death.
I remember the cries of anguish as we walked from church to church that was burned to the ground on the island of Lombok.
I remember the tears of Rebecca in Iran as she showed the picture of her father who was stabbed to death for sharing the gospel.
I remember the voice of Pastor Daniel in Vietnam as he shared how he was chained to the ground for six months.
I remember the fear of Grace from Sudan as she shared how her church was attacked and her friend was shot through the head.
Oh, I remember the cries of Caleb in Eritrea as he shared with tears how two dear friends were executed in front of him because of their faith.
And I remember the tears of Joy in the southern Philippines as she shared how her fiancé was shot to death in their church in Mindanao.
But, most all, I remember the deafening sounds of silence every time I return home.
RESPONSE
How can I be silent today? How can I not speak on behalf of those who suffer? How can I desert those that belong to the same body that I belong to and who desperately need the encouragement of my intervention?
