#407 (1/10) - "13 Tax Increases in 2013"

SIGN PETITION: The outrage is building. Opposition to President Obama's anti-Israel choice for Secretary of Defense is growing. Even some in the mainstream media agree that Senator Chuck Hagel's radical views make him "not the right choice." Senator Hagel has voted to appease Iran. He has even urged direct talks with the vile terrorists of Hamas, who target Israeli civilians with hundreds of rocket attacks every year. He also supports dangerous cuts to our military as unrest grows in the Middle East. Even more disturbing, Iran has publicly welcomed Hagel's nomination, while Israel has stated, "We are worried." The ACLJ [American Center for Law and Justice - Christian legal ministry]  is actively engaged, working on Capitol Hill and beyond, to stop this dangerous nomination. Israel and our Armed Forces deserve better.
Sign the petition  [see below] to defend Israel & stop this nomination today. Jay Sekulow ,ACLJ Chief Counsel

A SPECIAL NOTE: TODAY marks 12 days before the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that spearheaded the legalizaion of the abortion of the unborn in America. I am in the midst of a 40 day period of prayer and (limited) fasting to honor the memory of the over 55 million ! unborn that have been murdered and the tens of millions of their mothers, fathers, and siblings who have been victimized by this great American Holocaust.
CHALLENGE: This Sunday, ask your pastor that as a pro-life church (which I trust yours describes itself), how will they recognize Sanctity of Human Life Sunday on  Jan. 20th as will thousands of other pro-life churches in America. If he says he has no plans to do so, ask him why not. I'd love to hear the response you get.

PLEASE PRAY: 1.) For the girls/women each day contemplating an abortion; the abortionists and their staff; the crisis pregnancy centers seeking to serve the women facing unplanned pregnancies. 2)  For the passage of even more state laws that will effectively help to limit the number of abortions being performed. 3.)The defunding of Planned Parenthood that performs over 300,000 abortions (about 1/3 the toal) for profit and still receives almost 1/2 billion dollars in federal tax dollars. 4.) That one day America might finally pass a constitutional amendment promoting the Sanctity of Every Human Life - in effect oulawing both abortion and euthanasia. 5) For churches/Christians being pro-life- not just claiming to be but demonstrating it conclusively by their actiions.

NOTE: You've been told taxes were going to increase as this year began. Well, here's a summary of what kicked in. To those who somehow believed the President's campaign rhetoric that he would not be a part of raising taxes on middle-income Americans, SURPRISE!

"13 Tax Increases in 2013," by Curtis Dubay On January 8, 2013

New Year’s Day was tough for taxpayers. Thirteen tax increases kicked in.
The deal that Congress and President Obama struck that finally—but only partially—avoided the fiscal cliff resulted in seven tax increases. Those hikes combined with six tax increases from Obamacare that also began on New Year’s Day.

13 Tax Increases That Started January 1, 2013

Tax increases the fiscal cliff deal allowed:

1. Payroll tax: increase in the Social Security portion of the payroll tax [1] from 4.2 percent to 6.2 percent for workers. This hits all Americans earning a paycheck—not just the “wealthy.” For example, The Wall Street Journal calculated that the “typical U.S. family earning $50,000 a year” will lose “an annual income boost of $1,000 [2].”

2. Top marginal tax rate: increase from 35 percent to 39.6 percent [3] for taxable incomes over $450,000 ($400,000 for single filers).

3. Phase out of personal exemptions for adjusted gross income (AGI) over $300,000 ($250,000 for single filers).

4. Phase down of itemized deductions for AGI over $300,000 ($250,000 for single filers).

5. Tax rates on investment: increase in the rate on dividends and capital gains [4] from 15 percent to 20 percent for taxable incomes over $450,000 ($400,000 for single filers).

6. Death tax: increase in the rate (on estates [5] larger than $5 million) from 35 percent to 40 percent.

7. Taxes on business investment: expiration of full expensing—the immediate deduction of capital purchases [6] by businesses.

Obamacare tax increases that took effect:
8. Another investment tax increase: 3.8 percent surtax on investment income [7] for taxpayers with taxable income exceeding $250,000 ($200,000 for singles).

9. Another payroll tax hike: 0.9 percent increase in the Hospital Insurance portion of the payroll tax [8] for incomes over $250,000 ($200,000 for single filers).

10. Medical device tax: 2.3 percent excise tax paid by medical device [9] manufacturers and importers on all their sales.

11. Reducing the income tax deduction for individuals’ medical expenses [10].

12. Elimination of the corporate income tax deduction for expenses related to the Medicare Part D subsidy [11].

13. Limitation of the corporate income tax deduction for compensation that health insurance companies [11] pay to their executives.

Each of these 13 tax increases will slow the economy, meaning that businesses will create fewer jobs. Fewer jobs will make it even more difficult to land a job than it already is for the more than 12 million Americans looking for work.

President Obama demanded these higher taxes. Obama’s tax increases, in Obamacare and through the fiscal cliff deal, will not curb deficits and debt, because growing spending is driving America’s budget crisis. Congress needs to immediately turn its attention to the actual cause of our deficit and debt problem: too much spending. The proper way to address this problem is through reforms to entitlement programs [12].

President Obama promised the American people a “balanced approach” of tax increases and spending cuts to reduce deficits and debt. He has achieved the tax increase portion of that approach. Now Congress needs to force him to follow through on the spending cuts portion.

#406 (1/9) - 'America Deserves Better Than Abortion'

A SPECIAL NOTE: TODAY marks 13 days before the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v.

PRAY ALSO: For the passage of ''The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act (H.R. 61)'' discussed below. In light of the second article below that speaks of the record number of abortions attributed to Planned Parenthood, it is insane that they receive a dime of taxpayer funds, bad economy or not. [Sadly with the Democrats in charge of the Senate and our most pro-abortion EVER, the bill is not likely to become law. (It has been introduced before.) It thus points out the need for America to finally elect a pro-life majority Senate and a pro-life President. Let's also be praying for this.]

‘America Deserves Better Than Abortion,’ b Breeanne Howe (Diary)  |

On January 4th, Congressman Marsha Blackburn introduced the first pro-life bill in the House for the 113th Congress.  The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act (H.R. 61) seeks to prevent the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from giving more money to abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood. In her statement, Blackburn points out that, in 2010, Planned Parenthood received over $340 million from the federal government under the Title X family planning program.  Said Blackburn on the bill:
As a woman, I believe America deserves better than abortion. America shouldn’t celebrate abortion and our taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood, who profit from the destruction of human life with taxpayer money.
In response, Planned Parenthood took to Facebook, shocked that Pro-Lifers still exist in 2013:
their fear of the year 2011 by linking to a blog post admitting that, “2011 saw the highest number of abortion restrictions ever passed in a year.”  They noted that 2012 also made history with the second highest number of abortion restrictions ever passed.  One would think that with all their research, Planned Parenthood wouldn’t find it surprising that 2013 is going to be a difficult year for them.  Perhaps with the re-election of the most pro-abortion president ever, Planned Parenthood thought pro-lifers would finally give up.  However, even Time magazine recently admitted that the Pro-life movement is on the rise.  With this month marking 40 years since the Roe v Wade decision by the Supreme Court and the annual March For Life just weeks away, Planned Parenthood should know that the fight to protect the unborn has only just begun.

P. Parenthood Reports Record Year for Abortions, CBNNews.com, January 8, 2013
http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/healthscience/2013/January/P-Parenthood-Reports-Record-Year-for-Abortions/

Planned Parenthood has reported a record year for abortions.
Its annual report shows 333,964 abortions were performed in the 2011 to 2012 fiscal year. That pushed the nations largest abortion provider's figures to 995,687 abortions in three years.
At the same time, contraceptive services at Planned Parenthood has dropped 12 percent since 2009. Cancer screening and prevention services dropped 29 percent.
Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood reported a record $542 million in taxpayer funding last year. The Susan B. Anthony List (www.sba-list.org) reports that is 45 percent of Planned Parenthood's annual revenue.
"While government subsidies to Planned Parenthood have reached an all time high, so too has the number of lives ended by this profit-driven abortion business," SBA List's President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement. "Destroying nearly 1 million children in three years is not health care and does not reflect a concern for vulnerable women and girls," she said.

#406 (1/8) - ''Buffett Tax on Rich Will Hurt Average Americans"........

NOTE: I have addressed this topic  before but once more the fallacy of the concept is explained below in a concise way. Also, note the news item following that talks about a 'fair tax' hypocrite you might know.

''Buffett Tax on Rich Will Hurt Average Americans"- November 29, 2012

Billionaire Warren Buffett, writing in the New York Times, proposed a minimum tax of 30 percent on incomes of $1 million to $10 million and 35 percent on incomes above that. Unfortunately, Buffett's proposed tax hike is just another way of removing investment capital -- the engine of economic growth -- from the U.S. economy. It would also do next to nothing to close our long-term budget deficits, now running at $1 trillion plus a year, says Investor's Business Daily.
  • Last year, according to the Treasury Department, the U.S. deficit was $1.1 trillion.
  • According to a study by Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation, a Buffett-style 30 percent tax on all millionaires would generate just $5 billion.
  • That's less than one-half of 1 percent of our budget.
Buffett and others have said tax hikes on the rich are "fair."
  • The top 1 percent earn about 16 percent of all income in the United States, but they pay 37 percent of all the federal income taxes.
  • The 400 richest Americans pay about as much in taxes as the bottom 50 percent -- about 72 million Americans -- do.
  • As a group, millionaires have an effective income-tax rate -- that is, what they actually pay -- of 24 percent.
  • For the rest of us, it's 11 percent.
As for Buffett's idea for a "minimum" tax on the rich, the United States already has one. It's called the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). It was put in place in 1969, after it was revealed that 155 people with incomes over $200,000 had paid zero in income taxes in 1967. It was meant to catch a handful of rich folks who were not paying their "fair share." Next year, thanks to bracket creep, the AMT will snare as many as 20 million middle class Americans.

Moreover, as economist Alan Reynolds of the American Enterprise Institute pointed out, the 1990 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act raised taxes on the rich to make things more "fair" and to boost revenues to reduce the deficit. How did that work out?
  • In 1989, income tax revenues as a share of gross domestic product totaled about 8.3 percent.
  • By 1992, after the tax hikes kicked in, they dropped to 7.6 percent.

"Gore Sought to Skirt Taxes on TV Sale Profits," Jan. 7, http://news.newsmax.com/?Z6CDYbduE5FJg1J5Tg6vS6E1IXbkxlU1Z  [As an example of liberal hypocrisy regarding the rich paying their "fair share," I present the following. - Stan]

Al Gore’s sale of his cable channel Current TV to Al Jazeera has an intriguing footnote: The former vice president sought to close the sale before Jan. 1 to avoid higher taxes in the new year.
Al Jazeera, the pan-Arab news giant financed by the government of Qatar, reportedly paid $500 million for Gore’s low-rated channel, meaning Gore stands to gain $100 million for his 20 percent stake in Current.
“Mr. Gore and his partners were eager to complete the deal by Dec. 31, lest it be subject to higher tax rates that took effect on Jan. 1, according to several people who insisted on anonymity,” The New York Times reported. But the deal was not signed until Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Gore said in an interview in November that the “most fortunate” in America should pay their “fair share” in taxes. Fox talk show host Greta Van Susteren said on Thursday: “Apparently he doesn’t want to apply that rule to himself, or he has a different idea of what his fair share is.” .. Observers may also find irony in the fact, noted by Politico, that “Current, which was co-founded by climate change advocate Al Gore, agreed to be bought out by a broadcaster owned by the Qatari government, and therefore funded by oil.” ...

#405 (1/7) - "The Shariah Threat to America"

REMINDER: Today's broadcast of 'Truth That Transforms" has a great message entitled "Thou Shalt Not Murder" and a special feature entitled "Made In the Image Of God." In Central Florida, it will be on TODAY at 7 pm on channel 52.2. You can view just the message at www.truthinaction.org

A SPECIAL NOTE: TODAY marks 15 days before the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that spearheaded the legalizaion of the abortion of the unborn in America. NOTE: During the Republican Presidential primary season last year, one of the people talked about was New Jersey Gov. Cris Cristie. While I admire the governor's outspokenness, I was shocked to hear him in one interview say that there was no threat for Sharia law in America and in effect laughed it off. As you will read below, that attitude by a nationally popular politician speaks of an ignorance of what is going on in our country that really scares me.  - Stan

''The Shariah Threat to America,'' - Dec. 26, 2012

- by Fred Grandy, http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/Shariah-threat-law-constitution/2012/12/26/id/469061?s=al&promo_code=114AC-1

There is a great deal of misinformation circulating with regard to shariah and the threat it poses to America and western civilization. Some misinformed observers and members of the Muslim Brotherhood liken concerns over shariah to prejudice and bigotry, but the facts say otherwise.

Terrorism experts in the law enforcement, military and intelligence communities have cited shariah as the jihadists’ enemy threat doctrine in an intensive study called “Shariah: The Threat to America,” a scholarly, 352-page book based on authoritative sources of shariah, or Islamic law. While shariah does include “prayer and fasting” and “worship” as Thomas cites, it is also an all-encompassing legal and political code that covers aspects of life that have nothing to do with religion.

Perhaps most importantly, unlike other forms of religious law, such as canon law and Jewish law, shariah is the only form of religious law extant that is also meant to apply to people of other faiths, i.e. non-Muslims.The threat from shariah has nothing to do with prejudice or bigotry. The threat from shariah is real and multifaceted.

Some claim that shariah is no threat to the American legal system, but research shows such a threat does exist. Just as shariah has gradually become embedded in the legal systems of many European nations over the past generation, it is beginning to be found in U.S. court cases. An initial study by the Center for Security Policy entitled “Shariah Law and American State Courts: An Assessment of State Appellate Court Cases,” examined 50 cases from 23 states that involved conflicts between shariah and American state law. The study’s findings suggest that shariah has entered state court decisions, in conflict with the Constitution and state public policy.

This incursion of shariah into U.S. court systems usually manifests itself in the form of foreign law from nations such as Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Syria and other predominantly Islamic nations. As a result, four states, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arizona and Kansas, have passed into law “American Laws for American Courts,” legislation. Several more states are considering American Laws for American Courts. Unlike Oklahoma’s infamous constitutional amendment, American Laws for American Courts does not ban shariah. American Laws for American Courts protects individual, fundamental constitutional rights by preventing courts from applying foreign law when the application of that foreign law in the case at hand would result in the violation of a fundamental constitutional right, such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, due process and equal protection.

Among the organizations clouding the issue on shariah is the Saudi-backed Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). ISNA was named as an unindicted co-conspirator and revealed to be a Muslim Brotherhood affiliate in the U.S. vs. Holy Land Foundation, the largest terrorism financing prosecution in American history. ISNA was co-founded in 1981 by Sami Al-Arian, a man who is now in federal prison after having been convicted on terrorism charges as a member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

According to two reports in the San Francisco Chronicle, the other co-founder of ISNA, Mahboob Khan, twice hosted Ayman al-Zawahiri on fundraising trips here in the USA. In addition, a regional representative for ISNA, Abdurahman Alamoudi, was found to be a chief fundraiser for al-Qaida here in the USA and was convicted on terrorism charges. Alamoudi founded the Islamic Society of Boston using ISNA’s tax-exempt, non-profit status.

ISNA board member Muzammil Siddiqi told the San Francisco Chronicle in June 2001 that he “supported laws in countries where homosexuality is punishable by death."

Siraj Wahhaj, who served as vice president of ISNA, is on record as supporting all aspects of shariah, including its call for brutal punishments like the removal of one's hands as the penalty for theft, and death by stoning as the penalty for adultery. According to Wahhaj, such harsh measures are wholly justified by Islamic scripture as he preached in a May 1992 sermon: “I would cut off the hands of my own daughter [if she stole] because Allah stands for Justice.” On another occasion, Wahhaj stated: “If Allah says 100 strikes, 100 strikes it is. If Allah says cut off their hand, you cut off their hand. If Allah says stone them to death, through the Prophet Muhammad, then you stone them to death, because it’s the obedience of Allah and his messenger — nothing personal.”

Islamic scholar Stephen Schwartz has described ISNA as "one of the chief conduits through which the radical Saudi form of Islam passes into the United States." These hardly seem like the kind of people who should be leading interfaith outreach in the USA.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear blog friend,
As the New Year begins, I don't know one person reading this who is not in some way concerned about how our nation's economy continues to be in a fragile state as is the financial security of most of us. I was acutely reminded of this past early November.

One morning, as I was about to spend time reading indoors,  I felt impressed by the Spirit to sit outside in front of my house  as I did that.  After I had my lawn chair set up, I decided to walk over to get the mail I had forgotten to pick up the day before. Among the items I picked up, there was a letter from my investment company that included a graph showing that during the past 2 years, my savings (after 40% had been wiped out in the '08 crash) was now half of what it was back in Sept. '09. Because for several years now I have lived solely on that savings, that news left me stunned. When I got back to my lawn chair, I immediately began to express my anxiety about my finances to God. When I finished praying, God then  led me to sing the words to a praise song that I had brought outside with me, a song that assured of God's presence with us.

After singing it twice, I looked out over the front lawn and saw a tiny bird hopping between the blades of grass obviously in search of food. After watching it for awhile, I suddenly recalled the passage from Matthew 6:25-27:

(25)"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? (26) Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much  more valuable than they? (27) Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?"

The leading be outdoors? The alarming news? The song of reassurance I happened to have with me? The bird that "just happened" to be there on my lawn at the time? (I don't  recall ever seeing a bird hopping on my front lawn.) The applicable passage of Scripture coming to my mind? I call times like that God-moments.

Several weeks later, on Thanksgiving Day, I called my former roommate to get caught up on the latest with him. As we were closing our time and about to have prayer together, I shared with Mike about my uncertain financial situation. Then, while he was praying for me, Mike unexpectedly asked God to have someone send me money. While I was stunned by the boldness of his prayer, I never said anything to Mike afterwards and didn't give it another thought.

Then, the following week, as I was going through my email, I came across something from someone I didn't recognize and with nothing written on the subject line. As I've always been told to be suspicious of such emails as they might contain a virus that could infect my computer, I was about the just delete that email when I just sensed the Spirit telling me to go ahead and open it. While the thought made no sense, I momentarily forgot about the possible danger of what I was doing and I opened the email.

To my surprise, it was from a lawyer in Texas who in turns out had been trying to contact me for several months. He told me that he represented the estate of a friend I had known for almost 40 years who had passed away in June and left some money for me in his will. Since he knew the name of my friend, I realized it was not a scam and I emailed him back to confirm what he had told me. (I also further confirmed this by  speaking to my friend's son-in-law on the phone.)  As surprised as I was by all of this, I was not expecting it to be no more than maybe $100, I later learned that it was many times that amount!

As I later thought about it, I realized that when my friend Mike had been led to pray as he did for me, his prayer had been Spirit-directed. My being led to open that email had also been Spirit-directed. (Once again, opening a strange email was something I have learned not to do and may still never do again.) And had I chosen to ignore the Spirit's prompting and opened that email, I understand that there was no other way I could probably have been tracked down. (My late friend did not have my phone number and had lost my address. The attorney had somehow finally managed to find my email address on the internet.) Once again, I say I had another God-moment.
My friend, in sharing all of this, I am NOT suggesting that you open every strange email you receive. (Unless God leads me otherwise, I will probably not open another unidentified email.) Nor am I saying that you should make it a habit to sit in a lawn chair in your driveway when you spend time in prayer. All that I'm saying is that in times of trouble and anxiety, seek to be sensitive to what the Holy Spirit may want to say to YOU and what He might direct YOU to do. And when you do step out in a faith step (involving some risk), be expectant of what God might do. You too may get to enjoy a God-moment. - Stan

P.S. - Years ago, I set aside a special notebook to record my God-moments, even briefly listing the ones I can remember over my nearly 40 years as a believer. In early November, I expanded the contents of that notebook by also listing things that happen that are not as startling but for which I still Thank God for. (FYI - After just 2 months, I have more than 70 "TY" ("Thank You") entries!)

I would encourage you to also keep such a notebook. Unlike a journal, which would record your thoughts and events in your life - negative as well as positive - this notebook would be a continual reminder of how God has been faithful in blessing you and thus a continual source of encouragement in those times when you feel most discouraged and be tempted to doubt God's goodness, faithfulness, and love. ALSO, when getting someone a gift, you might consider giving he or she a nicely bound notebook and challenging them to also use it in as one to record their God-moments and .

#403 (1/5) Obamas' $20 Million! Taxpayer-Funded Hawaii Vacations

A SPECIAL NOTE: TODAY marks 17 days before the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v.

NOTE: As you consider that we have just had a spending bill signed by the President that doesn't in fact cut spending from our bloated governement. And yet, 1) The first story below speaks to the excessive amount the President and his family have spent on their vacations to Hawaii, and 2) The article following explains how the cost of this President is almost 20 times what the British pay for their royal family. Can you say American royalty?!!

"Obama's Family Vacations to Cost Taxpayers More Than $20 Million" - January 3,  2013

http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/obama-taxpayer-vacation-cost/2013/01/04/id/470102?s=al&promo_code=11788-1#ixzz2H3P6gEmy

President Barack Obama’s four vacations to Hawaii since becoming president may cost taxpayers “in excess of $20 million, and possibly much, much more,’’ the White House Dossier reports.A breakdown by the Hawaii Reporter shows his trips in 2009, 2010, and 2011 cost about $4 million, much of it for Air Force One. But that doesn’t include costs like flying in advance teams and separate flights Michelle Obama twice took.

When Obama returned from Hawaii to work on the fiscal cliff deal last week and then jetted back to Honolulu, the second roundtrip flight added about $3.24 million to the tab, bringing the 2012-2013 vacation to over $7 million, the Reporter said.

“If we assume the estimates are probably quite low, then it’s likely to the bill for the combined vacations is more than $20 million,’’ said the Dossier’s Keith Koffler.

“Given that much of the cost involves transporting the First Family and its retinue, the Obamas could have saved taxpayers millions by doing what the vast majority of Americans do: taking either one trip a year, or none.’’

Koffler said while some argued the president is justified in returning to Hawaii because that is where he was born and grew up, “how many of us get to go visit our roots for a two week vacation every year?

“The Obamas probably also feel they must go to Hawaii because they are creatures of habit . . . But their allegiance to routine is costing the taxpayers – including those in the middle class Obama claims to care so much about – millions of dollars.’’

NOTE: If you've been watching the news the past few days, you may have heard the uproar over the House initially deciding to postpone the vote on aid to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Well, as usual, you probably noticed that nothing of WHY it was delayed was presented by the mainstream media. I hope you sensed something was wrong with such one-sided coverage. Sure enough, as you'll read below, there was a reason for the delay: there was enough pork added on for a Texas-size barbeque. Just business as usual for those catering to special interests! Truly disgusting!

"Taxes to Rise on Most American Workers" -  By Amy Payne On January 2, 2013

Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called it “a happy start to a new year [1].” That probably tells you all you need to know about the fiscal cliff deal that passed the House last night. The bill—which President Obama has promised to sign, though he took off for Hawaii again after the vote—has a 10 to 1 ratio [2] of tax increases to spending cuts. This is the President’s version of a “balanced” approach.

In addition to tax increases [3] on Americans making more than $250,000 a year, the bipartisan deal will actually raise taxes on the vast majority of American workers. How? The payroll tax “holiday” has ended. The Wall Street Journal calculates that the “typical U.S. family earning $50,000 a year” will lose “an annual income boost of $1,000 [4].”

Meanwhile, the higher tax rates will hit small businesses and investors—which is grim news for a country in need of new jobs. “It is the small businesses that employ the most workers [5] who will pay the higher rates,” explains Heritage’s Curtis Dubay. “These tax hikes on investment will further dampen investment and result in even less job creation. This is more bad news for the 12 million unemployed Americans.”
While the President touted a “balance” of tax hikes and spending cuts, the truth is that the bill increases government spending [5] by about $330 billion.

Though Congress and the President have known for two years that they would have to do something about all the expiring tax rates, they waited until after the deadline had passed. This resulted in lawmaking for which “irresponsible” is not a strong enough word.

The Senate voted without knowing the cost of the bill—the Congressional Budget Office had not even had time to go through it.The legislation passed both chambers of Congress within a 24-hour period on a holiday, which meant that Members of Congress—much less the American people—did not have time to find out what was in the 157-page bill.

Business Insider notes that all of the new tax rates are “‘permanent [6],’ meaning that Congress would have to agree to change them. This is a big deal. Almost every fiscal agreement reached by Congress since the Bush tax cuts of 2001 has been scheduled to phase out at a future date.”

After all the damage this deal has done, Congress isn’t through yet. Well, this Congress is—the outgoing lawmakers make their exit on Thursday, and the new Congress will be coming in. It will face the real consequences of the across-the-board budget cuts to defense known as sequestration, which this deal postponed for two months.

It will also face the U.S. debt limit. President Obama said last night that he is in no mood to get into another debt limit fight—even though that is inevitable.“While I will negotiate over many things, I will not have another debate with this Congress over whether they will pay the bills they’ve already racked up,” Obama said [7].But that debate is coming. This time, rather than grandstanding, Obama must deliver on his promise of a “balanced approach,” now that he has locked in his class warfare tax hikes. That means reforms to rein in entitlement spending in particular. The $650 billion fiscal cliff distracted from the $48 trillion looming fiscal crisis [8]—the long-term funding obligations of Social Security and Medicare.
Without spending cuts and real entitlement reforms, that fiscal iceberg remains dead ahead.
