#547 (6/10) The IRS Scandals Point to Corrruption

URGENT PRAYERS/PETITIONS: Same -Sex "Marriage"- PLEASE PRAY WITH ME (every day untill the decision is revealed sometime in June) THAT THE SUPREME COURT WILL VOTE TO UPHOLD THE 2 LAWS REVIEWED SUPPORTING A TRADITIONAL DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE.. PRAY that the Court will resist any pressure to MAKE new law based on "cultural trends." PRAY as though the very future of the institution of the family is at stake because it is. PRAY for the sake of possibly millions of children, and for our country if it is to continue to be shown any more favor by our Heavenly Father, who I promise you will be very displeased if homosexual marriage is legalized; "GOD IS NOT [TO BE] MOCKED..." - (Gal. 6:7)  - Stan [Be sure to check out my brief essay at post #478.]

On the other hand, after such elections, they have been known to release political prisoners as a sign of good faith. PRAY that God would especially protect Pastor Seed throughout the next few weeks and that his release would be part of actions the government takes post election. - Stan]"

Earlier this week, directors of pro-life, pro-marriage and Tea Party organizations delivered some riveting testimony before a congressional committee about the way their applications for tax-exempt status were improperly targeted by the Internal Revenue Service. So far, three federal lawsuits against the agency have been filed, and a fourth may be following soon. To call this a scandal is an understatement. It's a development that is shaking Americans' trust in the federal government to the core.

According to an audit by the Treasury Department's Inspector General, as of last December, 296 applications from conservative groups had been singled out for review; 108 had been approved after lengthy delays, and 28 had been withdrawn, often because applicants simply gave up. That left 160 applications still pending—including one that was 1,100 days into the approval process, which ordinarily takes only 90 days.

By comparison, liberal groups experienced no such delays over the same time period. In fact, not only did the IRS approve an application filed by President Obama's half-brother in Kenya (called the Barack H. Obama Foundation) in just 30 days when he applied in 2011, it granted the group retroactive tax exemption back to 2009.

This week, the director of a pro-life organization testified that an IRS official said her group's application was ready to be approved—and would be, as soon as she sent a letter stating that members of the organization would cease protesting at Planned Parenthood® facilities. Meanwhile, the director of the National Organization for Marriage, which is planning to file a federal lawsuit, testified that the IRS directly leaked the names of its donors to a gay-activist organization—which then harassed the donors.

These actions, along with the considerable delays experienced by other groups, appear to have directly affected conservatives' ability to raise funds and get out their messages before the 2010 and 2012 elections. So far, one IRS commissioner has resigned, and another official, after delivering a statement before Congress, invoked her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself and refused to answer any questions.
Congress still has a long way to go to get to the bottom of this mess. Please PRAY for our elected officials to operate with courage and integrity during this process.

"Washington Launches Four Different Investigations into IRS Mess ,"  May 28, 2013, http://www.presidentialprayerteam.com/Prayerwatch?pw=1476

Capitol Hill aides spent their Memorial Day weekend scanning hundreds of pages of documents related to the IRS scandal in order to prepare their bosses for what will inevitably be a frantic month of June involving multiple simultaneous investigations into government wrongdoing. By the time lawmakers return to session, at least four different investigations will be underway.

According to reports, at least five different IRS offices including Cincinnati, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois and El Monte and Laguna Niguel, California improperly targeted conservative nonprofit groups for extra scrutiny between 2010 and 2012. The IRS’ actions, chronicled in a report by Treasury Inspector General J.Russell George, started when a "team of [IRS] specialists" came together in April 2010 to process the tax-exempt nonprofit status of conservative groups that might be "potential political operations" (page 13 of the IG report). The IRS added "additional specialists" to this effort in December 2011.

The Senate Finance Committee under Chairman Max Baucus is leading that committee’s investigation into improper targeting, calling the IRS conduct "intolerable" and "a clear breach of the public’s trust." The House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa of California has decried what he sees as the lack of cooperation coming from the IRS, and he refuses to dismiss the possibility of Treasury Department or even White House involvement.

The head of the House Ways and Means Oversight Committee, Louisiana Representative Charles Boustany may be conducting the toughest probe into the IRS so far, seeking "all communications" containing the word "tea party," "patriot," or "conservative." Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp of Michigan also raised awareness of the issue by reaching out to the public, asking Americans to write in with their own stories of IRS harassment.

New IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel has pledged to conduct a full internal investigation "to make sure it doesn’t happen again." On Sunday, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina called for a special prosecutor to investigate the IRS. (Sources: The Hill, Daily Caller)

As the Lord leads, please pray:
  • That the investigations will finally uncover the extent of the "targeting" by the Internal Revenue Service, and from where in the chain of authority the matter began.
  • For legitimate organizations still seeking their tax-exempt status to receive fair treatment.
  • That any individuals and businesses that have been socially and economically damaged by the IRS scheme will be justly compensated.
