Fri. March 14 - PRAYER ALERT! from American Center for Law and Justice: This has been a traumatic 48 hours for American Pastor Saeed Abedini.Nearly two weeks ago he was moved from his prison cell to a local private hospital and promised medical care. Then, two days ago, Iranian guards banned visits from his family, shackled him, and ordered that he return to his prison cell untreated. This was devastating for Pastor Saeed and his family. He needs to undergo surgery for internal injuries he sustained from prison beatings. You immediately took to Facebook and Twitter to share what had happened. Thousands began praying in earnest for Pastor Saeed. Just yesterday we learned that Iranian prison officials reversed course calling the whole ordeal a "mistake." Pastor Saeed is now unshackled, but while he remains in the hospital, he is still not receiving critical treatment. He still desperately needs surgery and to be released to his family in the U.S. You spoke out this week and made a tremendous impact. We need you to Be Heard again. "What Ukraine Needs from the U.S. NOW" - By Luke Coffey, March 14, 2014

In what is best described as blatant disregard of Ukraine’s national sovereignty, Russian troops continue to occupy key sites across the Crimean Peninsula. What’s next: Russia has announced an illegitimate referendum on Sunday giving the people of Crimea a vote to determine whether they want to join the Russian Federation.

Ukraine is an independent country. Its people voted overwhelmingly (90 percent in favor) to declare independence from Russia in 1991. Sunday’s vote is illegal—it is merely Russia’s attempt to justify its imperial annexation of part of a neighboring country.

>>> Learn more about Ukraine: Population, freedom profile, history, government [2]

Moscow will likely engineer the results of the vote anyway. This referendum should not fool anyone, and the international community should recognize Russia’s behavior for what it is: a direct violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Recent events have confirmed what many already knew: President Obama’s “reset” of relations with Russia is dead. Obama cannot ignore what is happening in Eastern Europe and hope that it will simply disappear. Russians respect strength and consistency, neither of which has been displayed by the president or his European counterparts.

The Ukrainian people need the U.S. to stand firmly in their corner. Just a few things the president and Congress should be doing right now:

Stop holding aid to Ukraine hostage to politics. Ukraine needs aid now. But the White House is trying to use this as an opportunity to pass a “reform package” for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that has been pending for three years. Congress should refuse the Obama Administration’s attempt to link urgent assistance to Ukraine to these other political games.

Enact sanctions on Russia. Washington should implement targeted sanctions aimed directly at Russian officials responsible for violating Ukrainian sovereignty, including freezing financial assets and imposing visa bans.

Withdraw immediately from a useless treaty. New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) is a fundamentally flawed treaty that dramatically undercuts the security of the U.S. and its allies. It is an extraordinarily good deal for the Russians, as it significantly limits Washington’s ability to deploy an effective global missile defense system. It does nothing at all to advance U.S. security while handing Moscow a significant strategic edge. The U.S. needs a strong missile defense to protect our interests and those of our European allies.

Our NATO allies are nervous—not to mention the Ukrainian people with Russian troops on their doorstep. The world needs America to step up.

See more things the U.S. should be doing. [3]

"Post-Cold War Peace Is Over: Why Russia’s Ukraine Aggression Is Just the Beginning" - By Israel Ortega, March 13, 2014

The end of a post-Cold War peace and the biggest event since the fall of the Berlin Wall—that’s how panelists [2] at The Heritage Foundation described the ongoing situation in the Crimean peninsula, which is slated to hold a referendum this Sunday [3] to decide if it wants to be a part of Russia.

The current Ambassador to the United States from Estonia, H.E. Marina Kaljurand, described the Crimean government as a “puppet” for Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and called this weekend’s referendum in the peninsula ”illegal.” >>> MORE: Obama’s Meeting with the Ukrainian Prime Minister [4]

The ambassador was quick to remind the audience that while no one is looking to escalate tensions, it’s important to remember that what’s happening is a clear “violation of international law,” necessitating accountability.

Panelists predicted that Russia’s recent aggressions are just the beginning. Former Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker warned that Russia will become emboldened after this weekend’s referendum in the Crimean peninsula (where it’s likely they will vote to side with Russia), and that could encourage a spillover effect in other parts of Ukraine.

The hostilities should not be surprising, according to Dr. Stephen Blank, because they continue an imperialistic streak that runs deep in a Russian foreign policy that has never quite adjusted to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Providing greater context to this point, Heritage’s Luke Coffey was quick to point out that while Russia has increased military spending during the last few years, the United States [5] and NATO are shrinking their militaries to levels not seen since World War I and World War II, including a U.S. Navy that is smaller [6] than it was prior to World War I.

The European Union’s hesitation and President Obama’s dithering prompted Coffey to sum up the situation this way: “While the EU is playing checkers, the U.S. is playing golf; Russia is playing chess.”

The Heritage Foundation has not only been covering the Russia-Ukraine situation, but has also been providing key recommendations on why it’s time for a clear strategy—one that’s not based just on hope [7].
